Veteran choreographer Mandi Maser has been appointed to lead Concordia's growing dance and cheer programs.
A trio of junior elementary education majors represented Concordia cheer and dance on the list of NAIA Scholar-Athletes released on Friday.
The Concordia cheer team competed at the GPAC Invite Saturday morning. The squad finished third in the non-stunt cheer category with a 72.93 score.
On Wednesday night, the Concordia cheer team held its first competition. The Broncos topped the Bulldogs, 81.45-75.7.
Head coach Daneen Kovar Theye will hold dance and cheer auditions on April 26 from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. in the PE Building gym.
Starting with the fall of 2014, Concordia University cheer will become an officially-sponsored sport, bringing the number of Bulldog varsity athletic teams to 21.
In another big step for the NAIA emerging sport of cheer, the GPAC held the first ever conference invite on Saturday. At the event hosted in Fremont, Neb., by Midland University, head coach Daneen Kovar Theye’s Bulldog cheer squad finished runner up in the “non stunt” category.
Concordia cheer captain Jessica Olson is used to being referred to as “Miss Iowa,” as dance and cheer coach Daneen Kovar Theye often calls the Carlisle, Iowa, native. So naturally the two-year member of the Bulldog cheer team has been selected as one of roughly 25 candidates who will vie for the official title of Miss Iowa.
