Concordia’s Pre-Health Scholars Program
Concordia University, Nebraska’s Micah Pre-Health Scholars program is designed to support students interested in healthcare careers through hands-on experiences working in healthcare, close relationships with professors, practicing health professionals and peers who share their interests, and graduate or professional school preparation.
What is a Micah Scholar?
In the Bible, the prophet Micah urged God’s people to act justly, love mercy and humbly follow the Lord. Concordia’s Micah Scholars strive to embody these values. Micah Scholars are passionate, motivated and mission-minded students who are excited to challenge themselves both academically and vocationally to further their future careers as healthcare providers. These students have a head for science and a heart for service, striving to be Christian leaders in their vocations by exploring the intersection of faith and medicine. In order to foster a community and culture that aligns with these values, the program is selective.
As a Micah Scholar, you will:
- Gain hands-on patient experience by receiving a stipend to pursue a certification in healthcare to begin work in medicine.
- Explore the intersection of faith and medicine by participating in book clubs, off-campus conferences and seminar-style lectures.
- Strengthen your faith through peer-led Bible studies and community chapel attendance.
- Receive exposure to many facets of healthcare through shadowing of different career areas and exploring medical missions, rural, urban and military medicine.
- Attend Scholars Table dinners, allowing for close-knit opportunities to engage and ask questions of local healthcare providers and leaders.
- Invest your time in service to others through dedicated volunteer and service hours and experiences.
- Partner with a vocational mentor to answer questions regarding studies, application processes and receive career-specific guidance.
- Prepare for graduate school applications through assistance with personal statement writing, mock interviews, resume development and entrance exam study halls.
- Enhance leadership skills by mentoring peers, holding office in Pre-Health Club and engaging in our campus community (tutoring, resident assistants, student senate, etc.).
- Have support from a community of peers, faculty and the program director.
Apply to be a Micah Scholar
Any student who has been successfully admitted to Concordia University, Nebraska and intends to enter a healthcare vocation is invited to apply to be a Micah Scholar. Strong candidates for the Micah Scholars program will have a minimum 3.3 cumulative GPA and achieve a minimum score of 22 on their ACT.

- Complete the Micah Scholars application within your student portal.
- Upon completion of the application, the director will reach out to you to schedule a formal phone interview.

What are the requirements to be a Micah Scholar?
- To become a Micah Scholar, you must be accepted into Concordia University, Nebraska and indicate an interest in pursuing a career in healthcare and a dedication to service. You must also have successfully achieved a minimum 3.3 cumulative GPA, as well as a minimum score of 22 on your ACT. Additional attention will be given to completed high school biology and chemistry classes, which students should be completing with at least a “B”.
- Micah Scholars are expected to joyfully participate in development and leadership activities. Additionally, Scholars are to , maintain the GPA expected for thetheir healthcare vocation, with the guideline that all Micah Scholars will maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in their college coursework.
- You are not eligible for sports or performance scholarships while in the program, but you are welcome to participate in intramural competitions, ensembles and other extra-curricular activities as time and schedules allow.
What are the benefits of being a Micah Scholar?
- Micah Scholars receive an annual scholarship of $8,000 each year for up to five years while attending Concordia University, Nebraska.
- The program’s real value, however, comes from the intangible benefits of graduate and professional school preparation, continual support from a close-knit community of like-minded individuals and opportunities for spiritual and vocational growth.
How many students are accepted each year?
Our cohort of Micah Scholars is designed to be small and selective, allowing for relationship building and a true sense of community. We admit 10-12 students each academic year.
What if I don’t get accepted into the program?
Regardless of your acceptance into the Micah Scholars program, we are more than happy to have you here at Concordia University, Nebraska. As a pre-health student, you are still able to join our Pre-Health Club, learn more about various healthcare vocations and volunteer your time in service on campus.
