In early November, Concordia University Nebraska’s Agricultural Science program hosted the Nebraska Ag Summit. The summit welcomed around 80 high school students interested in pursuing a career in agriculture.

Its purpose was to give students an opportunity to learn about and experience various pathways related to agriculture. Throughout the day, students attended different workshops led by current Concordia agriculture students and professors, where they might be able to learn more about job opportunities in their field. These different stations included an escape room where students had to answer different agriculture trivia questions, and a crop sprayer stimulator. There was also a panel where high school students could also ask questions of Concordia Agriculture students.

The Ag Summit is designed to remind students of how important it is to take care of the resources we already have. Dr. Dennis Brink, chair of Concordia’s agriculture program, led a session on recycling pumpkins to use for feed for livestock. “The activities were important for learning more about careers in agriculture, but they were also important for learning to be better stewards of our earth,” said Christina Gronefeld, a sophomore in the agriculture program.

The day ended with an ice cream social and an address from President Bernard Bull. Kelli Rhodes, a junior in the program, stated that she really enjoyed the agriculture summit because it showed what a Christian agriculture program has to offer. “I love Concordia’s agriculture program and I love being a part of seeing it grow.”
