Concordia Nebraska’s Curtain Club offers “something for everyone” on campus

Concordia’s Curtain Club is a group for students interested in any aspect of drama and the dramatic arts. Members can take part in a variety of performances each semester, including improv shows, mainstage productions and one-act plays. It is also one of many clubs and intramurals available to students on Concordia’s campus.
Senior art education major Harley Storie is the president of the Curtain Club.
“If you want to try something new,” Storie said, “there is no group of people who are more encouraging and uplifting [than the Curtain Club]. There’s something for everyone here.”
Typically, the Curtain Club puts on two mainstage productions each academic year. These may be plays or musicals and incorporate a wide range of roles fit for students with various talents. Recent features have included Alice@Wonderland, Little Women and The Addams Family.
“Anyone can join Curtain Club,” Storie said. “We welcome all to audition or help on the crew for our mainstage performances, but we also have a lot of activities besides those.” Concordia Nebraska’s on-campus improv group, the IMPROVables, are also part of the club.
Everyone brings in something different. Whether it’s a gift in music, visual art, writing, organization, acting or anything else, we do amazing things when we all come together
The IMPROVables welcome members of all interests and comfort levels with performing. Some students even prefer to sit and watch the group’s improvisational performances. The group meets every Tuesday and Thursday night and welcomes attendees to join in on various games and skits. Throughout the year, they host improv nights and even a 24-hour improv show.
“We are a community of creative people who dedicate themselves to the performing arts,” Storie added. “Curtain Club is for all who enjoy theatre. Participants may be interested in performing, set building, stage managing, helping backstage or appreciating theatre...Everyone brings in something different. Whether it’s a gift in music, visual art, writing, organization, acting or anything else, we do amazing things when we all come together.”
Members of the Curtain Club are also eligible to join Alpha Psi Omega, the United States’ premier national theatre honor society. Founded in 1925, it has a long history of building community among theatre lovers across the country. Membership stimulates collaboration and creation as well as offering students scholarship and grant opportunities.
Storie said that the Concordia Nebraska Curtain Club’s mission is similar to that of the national honor society.
“A huge part of Curtain Club and theatre in general is sharing our work with others,” she said. “Each performance is a story we’ve carefully worked on that we want to share with other people.”
She also said that Concordia Nebraska students should consider joining the Curtain Club.
“If [you] are interested in any part of the theatre, we share that interest,” she said. “Students should join Curtain Club because they will be surrounded by a multitude of welcoming, talented and creative people...I hope that students are excited to try new things with people who have so many talents.”
