Meet Assistant Professor of Theology Rev. Mark Squire

Concordia University, Nebraska Assistant Professor of Theology Rev. Mark Squire loves the study of biblical theology. Whether its Hebrew and Greek, Genesis, the Psalms, the use of the Old Testament in the New Testament or resurrection themes, he loves digging into all of it. He said he also enjoys reading various early church fathers and appreciates their perspective on faith and life. 

Squire has a bachelor’s degree from Concordia University Chicago, a master of divinity degree from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis and a master of sacred theology from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. He is currently in the reduced residency Ph.D. program at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, where he is part of the history of exegesis program.  

New to Concordia Nebraska, Squire teaches Greek and various theology courses at the university. 

“My favorite thing about teaching is connecting with the students, especially when everything clicks for them and increases their engagement and excitement over reading God's Word!” he said. “Concordia Nebraska is not only a welcoming place but has a very clear and obvious mission rooted in the work of the reign of God in Jesus Christ. You can see this in the students, faculty and staff, who all seem to know why we're here!”

Squire and his wife Emma have been married for 19 years, and they have five children, the oldest of whom just began her studies at Concordia Nebraska. When he’s not teaching, you’ll find Squire reading, enjoying sports such as baseball and hockey, games of all kinds including strategy games and Eurogames, gardening, bike riding, spending time with friends and family and cooking…especially homemade pizza.  

“I love sharing great coffee with people and hope to start roasting my own beans at some point in the near future,” he said. “Throughout my life, I have been involved in any number of ways in my local community and congregations. In the community, I have served in a role within a ministerial association, as well as volunteering at a local food bank, helping with a grief support group and other opportunities. In the church, I very much have enjoyed singing in various choirs and playing handbells, and I appreciate the opportunity to attend or lead Bible studies.” 

He said he is excited to join the Concordia Nebraska campus community.  

“We have been blessed by God during these years in the ministry and are looking forward to this new chapter in Seward!” he said. “Opportunities for worship, discussion with students, faculty and staff about faith and the building up of the Body of Christ through encouragement all abound at Concordia!” 

The theology program at Concordia University, Nebraska helps students understand the Christian faith in a profound manner so that, in partnership with the Holy Spirit, they might translate it into a way of life that richly expresses God’s gracious love in Christ Jesus for all His creation.
