From photo travelogues to a strong man competition, the Concordia community will be in the mix of Seward's yearly Independence Day celebration.

Concordia on the Fourth:

Concordia's historic China place settings collection will be featured in the "Sunday's China" exhibit. The exhibit is open from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. and will be held at the Seward Civic Center, in the West Fireplace Room. The settings are from Concordia's Koenig Collection, named after former professor Henry Koenig.

Emeritus Professor, Dr. Robert Fiala, will speak Sunday, July 4, at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., in the Jones National Bank & Trust Co. basement. His first presentation, "Two German Cities: Dresden and Berlin, From Destruction and Division to 21st Century Reconstruction and Unity," will start at 1 p.m. and his second presentation, "Two Chinese Cities: Pinguao and Beijing, Authentic Old Walled City of Finance and Present Chinese Capital, 1045 BC to Oct. 4, 2009," will start at 2 p.m.

Music Professor, Dr. Kurt von Kampen, will direct the Seward County High School Summer Chamber Choir during their free concert at the Civic Center Auditorium, starting at 1 p.m.

Concordia's throwing coach, Ed McLaughlin, will administer the Strong Man/Strong Women Contest at the Seward Middle School Lawn, starting also at 1 p.m. There is no entry fee for the contest and participants must be 18 years or older.

Free candy, anyone? Make some noise for the Concordia University van during the Grand Parade starting at 4 p.m., Sunday afternoon. The parade begins at 1st & Bradford Avenue and heads west on Seward St. to City Park. The theme for this year's parade is "All About the Family."

Concordia's softball team is operating a fireworks stand in Seward. Support Bulldog athletics by purchasing your fireworks from the softball team's fireworks tent. It is located on Progressive Avenue off of Hwy. 15 south of Seward. The tent is between the SuperWash car wash and the former Nebraska Tire building.
