Dr. Tonya Peters teaches criminal justice courses at Concordia as an adjunct professor. Peters earned her bachelor of arts in both political science and public administration from Doane University and her Juris Doctor from the University of Nebraska College of Law. Peters has been an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Lincoln since 2001, and has been the full-time Police Legal Advisor for the Lincoln Police Department since 2010.
As an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Lincoln and the Police Legal Advisor for the Lincoln Police Department, Peters has:
- Litigated numerous criminal and civil matters
- Litigated/provided representation in Federal Court, County and District Courts, the Nebraska Worker’s Compensation Court, the Nebraska Court of Appeals and the Nebraska Supreme Court
- Provided legal and policy advice to the Mayor, City Council, Chief of Police, Internal Affairs Officer, Command staff, Officers and civilian staff
- Prepared and reviewed search, inspection and arrest warrants and criminal court orders
- Provided advice on arrest, search and seizure, investigation and elements of various criminal offenses
- Provided training to recruits, officers and emergency dispatchers
- Provided advice on constitutional issues, criminal law, labor/employment law, civil rights litigation, implementation of various types of law enforcement-related technology and legislation.
- Is a member of the Nebraska Bar Association, the Nebraska County Attorney’s Association and the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Legal Officer’s Section.
