J.D. Bowers presents on genocide and activism
Dr. J.D. Bowers will be presenting “The World Has Failed: An Evaluation of Contemporary Genocide Studies and Activism” as part of the Looking Beyond Speaker Series at the Concordia University, Nebraska campus Oct. 7 at 12:40 p.m. in the Thom Leadership Education Center Auditorium. The presentation is free and open to the public.
Bowers is the director of The Honors College at The University of Missouri, a position he has held since August 2015. Before that, he was the associate vice provost for university honors at Northern Illinois University, the director of NIU’s Genocide and Human Rights Institute and an assistant professor of history.
Bowers holds a Ph.D. and Master of Arts in history from Indiana University and a Bachelor of Arts in government from The College of William & Mary in Virginia.
In 2005, he was a recipient of the Fulbright Teaching Award. He received NIU’s highest honor, the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching award, and received two awards for outstanding international teaching. He also led the University Honors Program to several awards for excellence in globalization, advising and programmatic excellence.
Bowers resides in Columbia with his wife, Kristy, and his two daughters when not enjoying extended stays in the Netherlands or Cyprus.
The presentation is part of the Looking Beyond Speaker Series made possible in part through an ongoing gift from Martin and Regina Maehr. The series was created to expose Concordia students and the Seward community to diverse speakers and ideas.
