Assistant Professor of Theology

Department of Theology, Philosophy and Biblical Languages

John Genter joined the Department of Theology, Philosophy, and Biblical Languages in 2021. Prior to joining the faculty, he served as visiting professor at Concordia Seminary in Saint Louis (2021), teacher of record at Baylor University (2019–2021), and pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church in Downey, CA (2010–2015). His scholarly work focuses on the New Testament, Second Temple Judaism and ancient Greek novels.

Rev. Dr. Genter currently teaches Greek I-IV, theology and Bible courses. He has a special interest in Bible manuscripts—including Concordia’s replica of the world’s oldest extant Bible—and can frequently be spotted hauling facsimiles of ancient copies of Scripture across campus to discuss or read them with students. His background in Koine Greek includes editorial work on four volumes in the Baylor Handbook on the Greek New Testament series and collaboration on the recent NRSV-UE translation of Matthew’s Gospel.

Dr. Genter resides with his wife, Dr. Teddie Genter (Director of Concordia’s Micah Scholars), and their four children in Seward, NE. John is a permanent board member for the classical Lutheran high school in Seward (Trinity Academy at Concordia University) and serves as its coordinating chaplain. In his spare time, he enjoys hanging out with his family, reading good books, roasting coffee and playing tennis with students and friends.
