·        Last week:

o   Lost vs. Hastings, 2-0, on Sept. 25.

o   Won vs. Briar Cliff, 1-0, on Sept. 28.

·        Links: 2024 Schedule | Roster | Statistics

·        Notable: In two competitive home games this past week, Head Coach Nick Smith’s squad went 1-1 while getting on the board with its first GPAC win of 2024. The matchup with rival Hastings in the middle of the week was a dead heat after a couple of early lapses for the Bulldogs, which founds themselves in a 2-0 hole less than eight minutes after kickoff. Concordia missed out on a couple of its prime chances (one from Rosie Gyllenswan and one from Kierstynn Garner) and endured a 2-0 loss. The Bulldogs responded by putting together their second clean sheet of the year. Keeper Angela Banks made six saves and freshman Kyana Rios (first career goal) emerged with the lone goal in the 1-0 homecoming win over Briar Cliff. Garner (nine goals and two assists) was held scoreless for the week after a string of three straight games with at least one goal. The assist on Rios’ goal was credited to senior Emily Howard. Through 10 outings, Concordia has scored 15 goals and has surrendered 19 goals. The Bulldogs will take the middle of this week off before heading to Mitchell, S.D., on Saturday for a 3 p.m. clash with Dakota Wesleyan. Concordia routed the Tigers by a 6-1 score in 2023.

·        This week:

o   Saturday, Oct. 5 vs. at Dakota Wesleyan (3-4, 2-2 GPAC), 3 p.m.

Football

·        Current record: 3-2, 3-2 GPAC.

·        Last week

o   Lost vs. No. 9 Dordt, 33-22, on Sept. 28.

·        Links: 2024 Schedule | Roster | Statistics

·        Notable: In another opportunity to pull an upset of a top 10 opponent, the Bulldogs fell short on homecoming Saturday. Concordia stayed within two scores for most of the afternoon while up against No. 9 Dordt. However, the Defenders took control thanks to their power run game (302 yards) and an ability to snuff out two Bulldog red zone trips. Dordt emerged a 33-22 winner and stayed unbeaten at 3-0. Concordia did manage to treat its fans to a couple of big play touchdowns courtesy of quarterback DJ McGarvie. On a fourth-and-two play, McGarvie raced up the middle and ran 48 yards to the end zone. The Bulldogs trailed just 10-7 at the time. McGarvie also fired a 74-yard strike to receiver Austin Jablonski in the third quarter and then tossed a 14-yard touchdown to tight end Daylan Russell in the fourth quarter. In his career, McGarvie has thrown for 67 touchdowns and has run for nine. The All-American Jablonski achieved a milestone in eclipsing 2,000 career receiving yards (2,083). Defensively, safety Daylon Henson posted 11 tackles, two stops for loss and a forced fumble. For the second week in a row, linebacker Grant Huss came up with an interception. Another stiff test is coming up Saturday when Concordia will be at No. 2 Northwestern, the defending GPAC champion. The Bulldogs’ most recent win over the Red Raiders came in 2016.

·        This week:

o   Tied vs. Briar Cliff, 1-1, on Sept. 28.

·        Notable: The story is a familiar one for the Bulldogs, who came away from last week with two more conference ties. Home matchups with rival Hastings and Briar Cliff both resulted in 1-1 draws. Head Coach Jason Weides’ squad has now tied seven times this season as it adds to a school record in that category. In the battle with Hastings, Concordia got the equalizer in the 77th minute when Martin Herrera drilled a penalty kick. The tie with the Broncos marked the fifth straight draw in the series with the league’s most storied program from a results standpoint. On homecoming Saturday, the Bulldogs owned a 1-0 lead over Briar Cliff for nearly 30 minutes. D’Andre Williams delivered a powerful strike in the 22nd minute or his second goal of the season. At 1-0-3 in league play, Concordia has put up six points in the league standings. The Bulldogs are undefeated over their last 24 GPAC regular season games (15-0-9 during that stretch) dating back to 2022. Through 11 outings this season, Concordia has totaled 13 goals and has surrendered nine goals. The Bulldogs will take the middle of this week off before heading to Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday. Concordia earned a 1-0 win Mitchell, S.D., last season.

·        Notable: Head Coach Brett Muller’s squads took a break (nearly two weeks) in the fall season before resuming action at the beginning of last week. The men’s team competed at the Bent Tree Intercollegiate (Sept. 23-24) in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and shot a three-round total of 323-312-311–946, placing it ninth out of 10 groupings. Senior Justin Webert put together his best three-round tournament score of the season while placing in a tie for 16th. Webert improved each round in Council Bluffs as he turned in a total of 77-75-73–225. The strong showing lowered Webert’s team best season 18-hole average to 76.0. Fellow senior Jake Hagerbaumer also put together a solid tournament in shooting 80-77-77–234 for a 33rd-place finish. On the women’s side, the Bulldogs shot 350-349–699 at the Siouxland Invite (Sept. 23-24) co-hosted by Dordt and Northwestern. In placing ninth at the Siouxland Invite, junior Emery Custer (80-80–160) earned the seventh top 10 tournament placement of her career. The Broken Bow, Neb., native finished four strokes out of the top five and eight strokes behind the tournament co-champions. By day’s end, Custer lowered her team best 18-hole season average to 82.8. In round two, seniors Jennifer Gillotti (89-87–176) and Sarah Wilson (93-89–182) also shot scores in the 80s. Gillotti placed 37th overall and Wilson finished 41st on the strength of her career low. Both teams will conclude the fall portion of their 2024-25 seasons this weekend at the Nebraska Intercollegiate. State bragging rights will be on the line in Hastings.

·        Notable: There was one up and one down last week as the fourth-ranked Bulldogs continue conference play. Head Coach Ben Boldt’s squad went on the road and cruised past Doane in straight sets on Sept. 25 before coming back home for homecoming Saturday. The anticipated matchup with No. 1 Northwestern lived up to the hype in a five-setter. Concordia responded impressively after the first set and dominated the second and third sets. The Red Raiders ultimately won a tight fifth set that finished with a kill from Alysen Dexter. The loss snapped a seventh-match win streak for the Bulldogs and handed them their first conference defeat. Four Concordia players collected 12 kills apiece versus Northwestern: Ashley Keck, Addie Kirkegaard, Gabi Nordaker and Kya Scott. Northwestern enjoyed an advantage of .252 to .204 in hitting percentage. By category, the Bulldog leaders last week were Keck in kills (24), Nordaker and Ava Greene in blocks (six), Savannah Shelburne in assists (45) and aces (three) and Becca Gebhardt in digs (22). With last week’s results, Concordia sits one game behind Northwestern atop the GPAC standings. The Red Raiders are undefeated at 16-0 (6-0 GPAC). The Bulldogs will have a breather this week before embarking upon the lengthiest road trip of the conference season. Concordia will play at Waldorf on Friday and at Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday.

·        Notable: While busting 2,331 targets towards the team leaderboard, the Bulldogs placed third high overall at the 2024 Prairie Circuit Conference Championships held this past weekend in North Platte, Neb. Head Coach Dylan Owens’ squad placed behind only Fort Hays State University (2,406) and Midland University (2,403) at the top of the standings. In starring individual efforts, the four Bulldogs who emerged with awards were Sam Blevins as the men’s doubles trap champion, Katie Welker as the women’s doubles trap champion and women’s all-conference honoree and both Trevor Burch and Carter McKenna as all-conference freshmen. The La Grange, Ky., native Blevins also shot the team’s top overall score of 469, one target outside of a top 10 HOA finish. As a team, the Bulldogs tied for second in skeet and placed third in trap doubles (460), third in doubles skeet (471), fourth in trap (480) and fourth in sporting (428). In doubles trap, Blevins shot a 95 and held off four other competitors in a shoot-off to take the event title. On the women’s side, Welker shot a 94 in doubles trap and won the title outright. Concordia placed third in the conference for the third straight season. Next up will be the Hastings College Bronco Invitational this Saturday and Sunday.
