Gebhardt and McGarvie voted October BAAM Athletes of the Month

SEWARD, Neb. – For their performances throughout the calendar month, junior Rebecca Gebhardt of volleyball and junior DJ McGarvie of football have been recognized as the Bulldog Athletic Association Member (BAAM) Athletes of the Month for October 2023. The winners emerged from a vote conducted on Tuesday (Oct. 10) at the BAAM luncheon. Gebhardt also earned a BAAM monthly award in 2022.

The month of October culminated with Gebhardt and her teammates celebrating a share of the GPAC regular season championship. Throughout the month, the Norfolk, Neb., native compiled 113 digs with an average of 4.04 per set in eight matches (28 sets). Gebhardt starred as part of the four-set home win over No. 14 Jamestown on Oct. 6 when she posted 19 digs. A three-year starter at libero, Gebhardt earned Honorable Mention All-GPAC accolades as a sophomore in 2022. This season, Gebhardt has tallied a team high 330 digs (4.07/set) to go along with 13 aces in 24 matches (81 sets played). She has passed serve receive at a 96.5 percent clip. In late September, Gebhardt eclipsed 1,000 digs for her career (1,128 current total). The Lutheran High School Northeast alum has helped the Bulldogs to a 22-2 overall record and to a national ranking as high as No. 1 this season.

A native of Valparaiso, Neb., McGarvie has set a new standard for quarterback production at Concordia. During the month of October (three games), McGarvie completed 58-of-115 passes (.504) for 824 yards and six touchdowns (against three interceptions). He surpassed 300 yards in matchups against both Hastings and Midland. As part of this past week’s win over Doane, McGarvie became the program’s all-time record holder for career touchdown passes (52) and career passing yards (6,415). On the season, McGarvie has completed 196-of-342 (.573) passes for 2,477 yards and 15 touchdowns with 10 interceptions in nine games. He has also rushed for three touchdowns. McGarvie was named the GPAC Offensive Player of the Week on Nov. 6. The Lincoln North Star High School product leads all GPAC players with an average of 275.2 passing yards per game.

BAAM Athletes of the Month are rewarded out of the pool of student-athletes that garner BAAM Athlete of the Week recognition throughout the month.
