SEWARD, Neb. – Starting with the 2017-18 academic year, the Bulldog Athletic Association began naming male and female athletes of the month. Nominees for the monthly award will be comprised of the Bulldog Athletic Association athletes of the week throughout that month. The athletes of the month for December were voted on by attendees at the Jan. 9 Athletic Association luncheon. Recipients of the monthly awards will receive plaques from the athletic department.
The Bulldog Athletic Association Athletes of the Month of December are sophomores Cordell Gillingham of the men’s basketball program and Philly Lammers of the women’s basketball program.
A native of Greeley, Colo., Gillingham moved into a starting role this season for a squad that entered that week at 12-4 overall and is receiving votes in the national poll. Gillingham emerged as the hero of last week’s 79-77 overtime win at Doane courtesy of his game-winning buzzer beater. During the month of December, he averaged 8.0 points, 5.4 assists and 5.0 rebounds and shot 53.8 percent from the floor while helping Concordia to wins in four of its five outings. On the season, Gillingham is averaging 7.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists. He has become a key component of head coach Ben Limback’s program after playing in a total of 82 minutes as a freshman last season.
Named a second team All-American as a freshman, Lammers has expanded her game as a sophomore. The Omaha native collected national player of the week honors on Jan. 2 and is one of the primary reasons why head coach Drew Olson’s squad is undefeated (17-0) and ranked No. 1 in the NAIA Division II national poll. Over the month of December, Lammers averaged 16.8 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.0 blocks and shot 47.6 percent from the floor. In the win at No. 1 Saint Xavier on Dec. 29, Lammers totaled 22 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Over 17 games this season, she is averaging 13.2 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.8 steals and 1.6 blocks to go along with a shooting percentage of 48.9.
