Bulldogs 1-2 in GPAC tourney; 20 wins in 2004 sets school record

Twenty wins in the 2004 season set a school record for the Concordia baseball team. The Bulldogs were 1-2 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament that ended the season, losing to Dana, 4-2, and Sioux Falls, 11-0, and winning over Morningside, 6-4. Coach Jeremy Giedel already is looking ahead after the 20-27 season, 13-12 for sixth place in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. “We return the majority of our lineup,” he said, “and look forward to building on this year’s successes.”

Advancing to the NAIA tournament were Dakota Wesleyan, which won the tournament, and Dana, the regular-season champion. A pre-season poll had picked the Bulldogs to finish 10th in the GPAC. "I’m pleased with the final two efforts,” Geidel said. “We came back after a disappointing loss against USF and went into extra innings with Morningside to pick up a win. We had a solid pitching performance from (Mike) Rohr and our bullpen (Tommy Zavesky and Bobby Brunswick). Even though we lost to Dana, we had our chances but just couldn’t get anything going.”

Justin Hanneman had two of Concordia’s six hits against Dana, with the Bulldogs in front 2-1 after three innings. Mark Listenberg’s four hits for Dana included two doubles. Seth Pawling gave up only one run in five innings of relief. Dana 001 110 001 -- 4 10 3 Concordia 011 000 000 -- 2   6 3 W: Tigani; L: Doering; 2B: D-Listenberger 2; C-Tewes, Schoettlin; SB: D-Zachgo 2, Monigold.

Concordia won its first GPAC baseball tournament game ever with a 6-4 margin over Morningside in nine innings on May 7. Pawling got the win after coming on in relief in the eighth as the Bulldogs scored twice in the top of the ninth to break a 4-4 tie. Bobby Brunswick picked up a save. Senior outfielder Tim Ahlman batted in four runs with three hits. Concordia    202 000 002 – 6 9 3 Morningside 200 002 000 – 4 9 4 W: Pawling; L: Banning; S: Brunswick; SB: C-Miller; M-Krohn

Sioux Falls ripped 12 hits along with four Bulldog errors to win, 11-0, in the tournament opener on May 6. Ahlman got both of Concordia’s hits against Justin Frederiksen. Sioux Falls 004 043 -- 11 12 0 Concordia  000 000 --  0  2 4 W: Frederiksen; L: Hanley; 2B: S-McGuire, Millsap; SB: S-McGuire
