Bulldogs tabbed eighth In GPAC Poll
The Concordia University baseball team finds itself in the middle of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) preseason poll. The Bulldogs have been picked to finish eighth in the 13 team conference
Dakota Wesleyan, last season’s regular and postseason champion, was picked to finish on top with six first-place votes. Briar Cliff and Dana, who were picked to finish second and third respectively, received the remaining first place votes. The complete GPAC poll is listed below:

Last season the Bulldogs finished fifth in the conference standings with a record of 22-33 overall and 15-9 in the GPAC. The 22 wins in the season were the most ever by a Concordia team. They also set the school record for conference wins in a season with 15.
The Bulldogs start the season on the road Feb. 14, against the University of Nebraska at Kearney. They will then travel to St. Louis, Mo., to take on Missouri Baptist on Feb. 17. Concordia’s first action at home comes Feb. 28 against York College.
Baseball gets jump start on season
The Concordia University, Nebraska baseball team will take advantage of the unseasonably warm temperatures forecasted for next week by traveling to Kearney, Neb., for a doubleheader against the University of Nebraska at Kearney on Tuesday, Feb. 14. First pitch is scheduled for noon at Memorial Field.
According to Bulldog Head Coach Jeremy Geidel it is a great opportunity for the team to get some games under it’s belt.
“When the weather is nice early in the year we always joke around saying we should be playing,” Geidel said. “Coach Day of UNK called with the opportunity to get some games in, so we figured let’s take advantage of the weather instead of talking about it.”
Tuesday’s forecast currently calls for a high of 54 with partly sunny skies in Kearney.
The Bulldogs will be the second GPAC team that Nebraska-Kearney has faced in the young season. The Lopers swept Hastings in a doubleheader, 4-3 and 4-3, on Feb. 4.

Baseball gets first win of the season

Concordia picked up their first win of the season on Thursday, beating Missouri Baptist 6-3. Senior Joe Brand earned the win on the hill for the Bulldogs. Freshman Ryan Ramos got the save.
Leading the Bulldogs (1-5 overall) from the plate was freshman Willie Bush went 2 for 3 in the game with a solo homerun in the top of the sixth. Freshman Winslow Taylor also went 2 for 3 with a run scored. Junior Zach Williams had 2 RBI's while BJ Juelfs added an RBI.
The Bulldogs fortunes changed in the second game, losing in a weather shortened game 9-3. Lightning and the threat of tornados ended the game in the fifth.
The next game for the Bulldogs is slated for Thursday, February 23 at 1 p.m. against Peru State in Peru, Neb., weather permitting.
Baseball splits in Kansas City
23-26 FEB 2006
The Concordia University, Nebraska baseball team played five games last week, getting wins in three. On Thursday the Bulldogs defeated Peru State 11-9, in Peru. Concordia then traveled to Kansas City, Mo., to play a pair of games against Mount Mercy and Avila. Concordia won both match-ups against Mount Mercy but fell twice to Avila. After the weekend the Bulldogs are 4-7 overall.
Against Peru St. the Bulldogs pounded out 13 hits as the jumped to an 8-1 lead after four innings. Concordia set the tone early, scoring two runs in top of the first inning. Brett Stewart’s double in the third scored another pair for the Bulldogs.
Concordia scored in six of nine innings. Zach Williams was 2 for 3 on the day with a homerun and four RBIs. Drew Urban also had a multiple hit game going 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a sacrifice bunt. Kyle Spencer picked up the win on the mound, scattering three hits over six innings of work. Ryan Ramos earned the save.
On the first day in Kansas City the Bulldogs opened things up with a come from behind win over Mount Mercy, 6-4. Concordia used a four-run sixth to pick up the win. Thomas Newsom led the Bulldogs from the plate, going 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Matt Mirtching picked up the complete game win.
The Bulldogs didn’t fare as well against Avila, dropping an 11-5 decision. Most of Avila’s damage was done in two innings, a six-run second and five-run fourth. Concordia had two errors in the fourth inning to help Avila’s cause. Stewart took the loss on the mound.
Concordia defeated Mount Mercy again in a morning game on Sunday, 2-1. Joe Brand was the winning pitcher and Ramos picked up another save. Against Avila in the afternoon contest, not much went right for the Bulldogs as they were defeated 15-0 in five innings. Avila is undefeated on the season.
The Bulldogs open their home season on Tuesday against York College in a doubleheader slated for 1:00 p.m. at Plum Creek Park in Seward.
Spring break trip under way

The Concordia University, Nebraska baseball team started a long stretch of games last Friday against the Bellevue University Bruins. The Bruins, ranked No. 7 in the NAIA, defeated the Bulldogs, 5-0.
The game, originally scheduled for Thursday, marked the first of 10 games in 10 days for the Bulldogs on their annual spring break trip to Texas and back. The next stop for Concordia was Wichita, Kan., where they played a pair of seven-inning games against Southern Nazarene and Friends University.
Up first was Southern Nazarene, who got the better of the Bulldogs, 11-2. In the late game Concordia fared much better getting a 3-2 win over Friends. Senior pitcher Brett Stewart had a solid outing on the hill for the Bulldogs. Not only did he keep the Falcons off balance at the plate, when they did get on base, he pestered them there as well. In the game Stewart picked off three Friends baserunners, including two in one inning.
Offensively the Bulldogs were able to plate a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to take a 2-0 lead. But the Falcons didn’t go easily, scoring a pair in their half of the sixth to tie things up.
In the top of seventh senior catcher Drew Urban lined a RBI single to score what proved to be the game winner. Ryan Ramos came in to pick up another save, getting out of the seventh unscathed. Concordia is now 5-10 overall.
The Bulldogs play three games in Texas before starting back north. On their way back to Seward they will play a pair of doubleheaders against Newman and Baker, both schools are in Kansas.

Bulldogs earn split in Texas

The Concordia University Baseball team traveled to Sequin, Texas to take on Texas Lutheran. The Bulldogs came up short in the first game of the double header loosing 4-1. Senior Joe Brand was tagged with the loss, pitching 4 innings allowing 3 hits and 3 runs. Junior Zach Williams led the Bulldogs going two for three from the plate on the day.
The Bulldogs came out strong in the second game, holding on to win 5-3. Freshman Kyle Spencer earned the win for the Bulldogs, pitching four strong innings, scattering three basehits and only giving up one run. The Bulldogs bats came alive in the third inning when they strung three straight hits together to score two runs in the third, and managed to manufactor another three runs in the remaining innings. Brand returned in the second game as the designated hitter and led the bulldogs from the plate going two for three with an RBI, a run scored, and was also hit by a pitch.
Seniors Thomas Newsom and Drew Urban each contributed hits for the Bulldogs. Freshman Ryan Ramos earned his second save of the trip. Ramos was able to pitch himself out of a one out bases-loaded jam by getting the TLU hitter to hit into a game ending double play.
The Bulldogs will be in action again on Thursday night in San Antonio, Texas against Trinity University.
Spring break trip nets three wins

The Concordia University, Nebraska Baseball team finished up their spring break trip last week, picking up three victories in the process. During the ten-day trip the Bulldogs played games in Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas.
The Bulldogs started the trip with a single nine inning game against NAIA No. 7 Bellevue University. Although coming up short in their upset bid, losing 5-0, the Bulldogs showed promise. Matt Mirtsching suffered the loss for the Bulldogs, but the outing for sophomore from Ft. Collins, Colo., was a good one. Mirtsching went four innings, surrendering two base hits and one earned run.
Offensively the Concordia bats were kept quiet most of the afternoon. The best scoring opportunity coming in the top of the sixth as theBulldogs had runners at first and third after a Brett Stewart single and a successful hit and run by Willie Bush. Concordia was held scoreless in the inning after a failed squeeze play, a strike out, and a ground out to end the inning. Senior Thomas Newsom and Junior Zach Williams each added hits on the day.
The next day the Bulldogs traveled to Wichita, Kan., for a day-night doubleheader. The first game was mared with errors as the Bulldogs fell to Southern Nazarene University 11-2. Freshman Winslow Taylor was marked with the loss for the Bulldogs on the mound.
The Bulldogs used solid defensive play and some clutch hitting in the night cap as they pulled out a close victory over Friends University 3-2. Brett Stewart took to the hill for the Bulldogs in game two and recorded the win with freshman Ryan Ramos getting the save. Stewart did all he could to keep the Bulldogs close scattering five Falcon hits over six innings. In the process he picked off three Friends base runners.
Senior catcher Drew Urban went 2-for-3 from the plate with a RBI. Urban’s single in the top of the seventh scored sophomore Todd Stahlecker and proved to be the winning run for the Bulldogs.
After a couple days rest and travel, The Bulldogs traveled to Sequin, Texas for a doubleheader against NCAA Div. III Texas Lutheran University. Game one was marked with errors by both teams, but proved to be most costly to the Bulldogs as they dropped the opener 4-1. Joe Brand suffered the on the hill. Williams had another solid day offensively the Bulldogs, going 2-for-3.
In game two the Bulldogs did a 180 from their performance in the opener, as the bats came alive and the defense stiffened up. Concordia amassed eight base hits and pushed five runs across the plate for a 5-3 victory. Freshman Winslow Taylor went 1-for-3 in the game with two RBIs while Senior Joe Brand went 2-for 3 from the dish.
Freshman pitcher Kyle Spencer picked up the win for the Bulldogs. Ramos came on again to close the door for the Bulldogs, pitching himself out of a one-out bases-loaded jam by getting the TLU hitter to ground into a game ending double play to senior Newsom at shortstop.
As hot as the Concordia bats where against TLU, the cool nighttime air of Texas put thefire out the very next night as the Bulldogs struggled at the plate against Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. The Bulldogs were limited to just four base hits while committing five errors as the fell to Trinity 12-3. Stewart was taged with the loss for the Bulldog pitching staff which threw seven different pitchers in seven innings trying to stifle the Trinity offense.
The Bulldogs made the trip north, again stopping in Kansas, this time to take on Newman University in a doubleheader. The Concordia offensive woes continued as they stranded twelve base runners in the two games, dropping both 4-1 and 2-1 respectively. On the bright side for the Bulldogs, junior second baseman Tad Tewes went 5-for-6 on the day with an RBI. Mirtsching and senior Mike Rohr suffered the loses on the mound.
The Bulldogs finished up the trip on a crazy day filled with bad weather. Game one of a scheduled doubleheader against Baker University was delayed almost two hours due to heavy rain and the threat of tornados. After waiting out the delay the Bulldogs were able to come out and pick up a win, 3-2, to end the trip on a high note.
Freshman Chris Nettles picked up the win for the Bulldogs as starter Joe Brand was chased in the bottom of the sixth and handed the no decision. Ramos continued to succeed in the closer role, picking up his fifth save of the season.
Offensively, Taylor doubled to start the top of the seventh and fellow Freshman Sammy Longoria came in to pinch run for Taylor. After a ground out that moved Longoria to third he was able to score the winning run on a wild pitch by the Baker pitcher.
Mother nature was not in the mood for a doubleheader, as rain and the threat of severe weather forced the teams from the diamond after only three and half innings, not enough for a complete game.
The Bulldogs are now 7-15 on the season as they ready for Great Plains Athletic Conference play. Concordia was scheduled to wrap-up their non-conference play on Tuesday against Peru State, but the game has been postponed due to weather. The next action for the Bulldogs is slated for Friday and Saturday, March 24-25 against Northwestern and Briar Cliff in Seward, weather permitting.
Bulldogs open conference play with win

The Concordia University baseball team opened up conference play this week against Briar Cliff University and Northwestern College. On Tuesday the Bulldogs traveled to Sioux City, Iowa to take on Briar Cliff in a twinbill. The game was rescheduled from an earlier date and despite playing in Sioux City, Concordia was the home team.
In game one senior Joe Brand held the Charger hitters in check and picked up the win as the Bulldogs won convincingly 10-4. Brand was able to scatter three hits of five innings of works. All of Briar Cliff's runs were unearned.
Brand worked with a lead throughout as the Bulldogs pounded out 11 hits in the win. Willie Bush and Drew Urban each homered in the contest. Both went 2-for-2 from the plate, whle Urban added a pair of RBIs. Zach Williams and Thomas Newsom also had multi-hit games for the 'Dogs.
Game two was a different story for the Bulldogs as they fell 6-3 in extra innings. Scheduled for seven the game went 10 innings.
Trailing 3-2 in the fifth inning the Bulldogs pulled even with a run in the bottom of the inning. Neither team could scratch a run accross until the Chargers erupted for three in the top of the tenth. Freshman Ryan Ramos, the third hurler used for the Bulldogs was pegged with the loss on the hill.
Temporary home not kind to Bulldog nine

On Wednesday the Bulldogs called Christenson Field in Beatrice, Neb., home as they hosted Northwestern College. The game was originally scheduled to be played last weekend in Seward, but because of weather and field conditions was moved. The change of venue didn't help Concordia, as they were swept by the Red Raiders 2-0 and 7-1.
Concordia is now 8-18 overall and 1-3 in the GPAC.
In game one Concordia fell 2-0 as the Bulldog bats were kept quiet, picking up just two base hits in the game. Neither team was able to get on the board as the contest was locked at a 0-0 tie through the first five innings. Senior pitcher Brett Stewart suffered the loss despite only allowing two runs on four base hits in six innings of work. Stewart picked off a pair of Red Raider runners, bringing his season total to five.
Errors by the Bulldogs and timely hitting by the Red Raiders spelled defeat in game two as the Bulldogs lost 7-1. After taking a 1-0 lead into the top of the fifth, Northwestern was able to score runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to finish off the sweep. Offensively the Bulldogs were led by sophomore outfielder Todd Stahlecker who was 2-for-3 with a double. Senior shortstop Thomas Newsom went 3-for-3 from the dish and had the lone RBI for the Bulldogs. Senior Mike Rohr was tabbed with the loss in relief.
The Bulldogs take to the road this weekend traveling to Sioux Falls on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. doublheader against the University of Sioux Falls Cougars before heading to Yankton, S.D. for a doubleheader against Mount Marty at 1:00 p.m. Both games are scheduled to be broadcast live over the web with Concordia's own Pastor "Bo" calling the action.
Errors slow Bulldogs against USF

On Saturday the Concordia University, Nebraska baseball team dropped two conference games to the University of Sioux Falls, 7-4 and 2-0. Despite playing in Seward, the Bulldogs were the visitors for the doubleheader. The games were originally scheduled to be played in Sioux Falls, S.D., but due to field conditions were moved to Seward at the last minute.
The Bulldogs are now 8-20 (1-5 GPAC) on the season, while USF improves to 9-4 (2-0 GPAC).
The Bulldogs defense was marred by five errors in game one. Those errors led to four of the seven Sioux Falls runs. Senior lefty pitcher Joe Brand took the loss on the bump for Concordia dropping his record to 3-2. Freshman Willie Bush led the Bulldogs hitting, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Junior Zach Williams went 1-for-3 with a double that scored two Bulldog runners in the fourth.
Game two turned out to be a pitchers duel that saw the Bulldogs come up on the short end of a 2-0 score on a controversial play. After giving up a lead-off triple in the bottom of the sixth, sophomore hurler Matt Mirtsching was able to retire the runner who tried to score on a ball that got away from senior catcher Drew Urban, who made a sliding throw to Mirtsching covering the plate.
After a walk, a double, and an intentional walk to Cougar hitters, Mirtsching found himself in a one-out jam. A Cougar then hit what was thought to be a foul ball and was played as such by the Bulldog fielders, which after some confusion the umpires ruled a fair ball plated the first run of the game for Sioux Falls. The controversial run turned out to be all USF needed to notch an all-important GPAC victory.
Mirtsching suffered the loss for the Bulldogs despite a strong outing, pitching six strong innings, giving up one earned run and scattering six Cougar hits. The loss pushes Mirtsching’s record to 1-5 on the season.
Offensively the Bulldogs were led by sophomore leadoff hitter Todd Stahlecker who reached base four times on the day with two base hits, a walk, and was also hit by a pitch to start the game. Senior Brett Stewart and freshman Casey Rodriquez also added hits for the Bulldogs.
The next action for the Bulldogs will be this Saturday, April 8 with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader against rival Nebraska Wesleyan University at Plum Creek Park.
Bats come alive as Bulldogs earn split

The Concordia University, Nebraska Baseball team got some much needed momentum by splitting with conference rival Dana College, losing game one 11-10 and winning the second contest 13-2. After splitting with Nebraska Wesleyan a day earlier the Bulldogs came into the game and added spring in their step.
The Bulldogs dropped a heart-breaker in game one, 11-10, going extra innings before coming up short . After plating six runs in the bottom of the first the Bulldog bullpen was not able to hold the lead for starter senior Joe Brand who earned a no decision after pitching five strong innings Brand scattered nine hits and only gave up three runs.
Offensively the Bulldogs were lead by freshman third baseman Willie Bush who had a stellar day at the plate with a 4-for-5 performance. Junior third baseman Tad Tewes kept up his hot bat going 3-for-5 on the day. Junior Zach Williams and sophomores Todd Stahlecker and Marcus Nathan also added multiple hits for Concordia.
After the disappointing end to game one, the Bulldogs left no chance for a comeback in game two, winning decisively 13-2 in a game shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.
Freshman pitcher Kyle Spencer picked up his third win of the season evening his record at 3-3. Spencer went three and two thirds innings giving up four base hits and two runs.
The Bulldog bats came were active in the third, fourth, and fifth innings as the 'Dogs scored all thirteen runs on base hits with no errors being recorded by either defense. Tewes continued his tear on GPAC pitching, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Senior Brett Stewart also had a big day at the plate going 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Stewarts towering double with the bases loaded ended the game as the run rule came into effect.
Williams added two more hits for the Concoredia offense. Senior catcher Drew Urban, who came in as a pinch hitter, homered to spark another Bulldog rally in the fifth.
The Bulldogs will be in action again at home Thursday, April 13 against rival Doane College in an 4:30 p.m. doubleheader at Plum Creek Park before hitting the road for the weekend for a pair of games in Mitchel, S.D., against Dakota Wesleyan.
Win streak continues as Bulldogs sweep Doane

The Concordia University, Nebraska Baseball got 18 hits in two games as they picked up two much needed wins Thursday against GPAC rival Doane College in an early afternoon doubleheader.
The Bulldogs move to 12-24 overall with the 8-0 and 8-6 sweep and now are 5-9 in conference play.
The Bulldogs got a strong outing from freshman Ryan Biermann who kept the Doane bats at bay. In five innings of work Biermann gave up three hits while striking out four and walking only three Tigers. Freshman Chris Nettles and senior Mike Rohr came in to finish off Doane in the sixth and seventh innings respectively to preserve the Bulldog victory.
The offensive surge continued for Concordia who were led by lead off hitter, sophomore Todd Stahlecker, who when 2-for-2 with two triples, two RBI’s, and three runs scored. Senior shortstop Thomas Newsom also added two hits and an RBI for the Bulldog offense.
Concordia picked up in game two where they left off in the opener as three starters collected multiple hits in game two. The offense produced 11 hits as the Bulldogs added an 8-6 win in the nightcap.
Sophomore Matt Mirtsching collected his third win of the season pushing his record to 3-4 as he went six complete while scattering seven Tiger hits. Freshman stopper Ryan Ramos collected his GPAC-leading seventh save as he came in to close the door in the seventh.
Freshman third baseman Casey Rodriguez continued to be strong at the plate, collecting his first career triple while plating two Bulldog RBIs. Senior Drew Urban, junior Zach Williams, and sophomore Marcus Nathan each had two hits a piece.
The Bulldogs travel to Mitchell, S.D., for a doubleheader Saturday with Dakota Wesleyan before returning home for an afternoon twinbill on Monday at Plum Creek Park with region foe Dakota State.
Bulldogs earn weekend split with DWU

The Concordia University, Nebraska Baseball team picked up a split with Dakota Wesleyan University on Saturday to keep in the winning ways.
The 6-5 loss followed by the 7-3 win helped the Bulldogs move up the GPAC rankings as the season starts to draw to a close. With the split the Bulldogs are now 13-25 overall and 6-10 in the conference.
Bulldogs pitchers were touched up for six runs on eight hits in game one as the winning run came across in the bottom of the fifth on a suicide squeeze Dakota Wesleyan. Senior Mike Rohr suffered the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs, going three and a third.
Offensively the Bulldogs were lead by junior second baseman Tad Tewes, as he went 2-for-4 with a home run. Senior catcher Drew Urban also went 2-for-3 for the Bulldog offense.
In game two, three-freshman pitchers combined to shut down the DWU bats. Freshmen Kyle in check as the Bulldog bats came alive to pick up the game two victory.
Sophomore lead off man Todd Stahlecker went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Senior shortstop Thomas Newsom went 2-for-4 and freshman third baseman Casey Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with two runs scored as the Bulldog offense amassed 11 hits and plating seven runs.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Monday as they play host to regional foe Dakota State for a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.
Bulldogs sweep, get swept over weekend

The Concordia University, Nebraska baseball team started the weekend hot but cooled off as the weekend progressed. On Saturday the hot hitting Bulldogs pounded out 26 hits in two games to earn the sweep of Dordt College, 11-5 and 4-2. The tables were turned on Sunday as Concordia came up short, falling 5-4 and 9-6 to Morningside College.
In Saturday’s games the Bulldog bats were unstoppable, pounding out 26 hits combined in the two games. Lead off hitter Todd Stahlecker continued his offensive tear with a 3-for-7 day. Stahlecker has now hit safely in 19 of the last 20 games.
All nine starters in the Bulldog line up had at least one hit, with multiple hitters having two and three hits. Tad Tewes and Brett Stewart drove in two runs and were 3-for-5 from the plate. Zach Williams also had a three hit day (3-for-4), while catcher Drew Urban added a pair of RBIs. In all Concordia totaled 17 hits in the opener.
Senior Joe Brand picked up the win in game one, throwing six complete innings, giving up three runs on eight hits. In game two sophomore Matt Mirtsching went six complete surrendering only two runs on five hits to pick up the victory. With the win Mirtsching improves to 4-4. Freshman closer Ryan Ramos picked up his eighth save of the season, tied for tops among GPAC pitchers.
Concordia opened game two by plating a run in the top of the first to take the lead, and scored single runs again in the fourth sixth and seventh en route to the victory. Tewes and Williams continued their dominance at the plate in the second game, going 2-for-3 and 2-for-4 respectively.
On Sunday the Bulldogs came up on the short end of a shoot-out with Morningside. In the opener, a late rally came up short as the Bulldogs fell 5-4. Stahlecker led the offense with a 2-for-4 day. Junior Zach Williams, Sophomore Clay Sanford, and Freshman Casey Rodriguez each added hits.
Senior Brett Stewart was tagged with the loss, going four complete while allowing\four runs on four hits.
The Mustang bats came alive in game two, as the Bulldogs weren’t able to keep up, losing 9-6. Freshmen Winslow Taylor and Willie Bush led the offense. Taylor had a big day at the plate going 2-for-4 with an RBI while Bush went 1-for-3 with three RBIs.
Freshman Chris Nettles suffered the loss for the Bulldog pitching staff, as fellow freshman Ryan Biermann was given a no decision after getting the starting nod.
The Bulldogs wrap up conference play, and their home season this week. On Friday thye travel to Fremont, Neb., to take on GPAC leading Midland in a doubleheader at 4:30 p.m. The last home game for Concordia is Saturday, against the Hasting College Broncos. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
Season comes to close over wet weekend

The Concordia University, Nebraska baseball team went in to the final weekend of the regular season knowing they needed at least two wins, probably three, to get into the GPAC Tournament. After numerous schedule and location changes the Bulldogs ended up winning one of four games, the lone victory coming against Hastings, 11-3, on Saturday.
The Bulldogs finish the year with a record of 17-31 overall (9-15 GPAC).
Originally, Concordia was scheduled to travel to Fremont and take on GPAC leading Midland Lutheran on Friday. Due to wet conditions that game was rescheduled to Sunday, but a time and location was not set until Sunday morning. In the meantime, the Bulldogs were supposed to host Hastings College on Saturday at Plum Creek Park. But because of field conditions and more rain, the game was moved to Hastings, with the Bulldogs remaining the home team.
Neither team could get much offense going in the opener as the two teams combined for only nine hits. Hastings picked up the 4-1 win, making the most of three Bulldog miscues, as all of the Broncos run were unearned.
Senior Joe Brand was pegged with the loss, scattering five hits over six innings, while allowing zero earned runs.
Offensively, Concordia was able to score a run in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Thomas Newsom.
In the second game the Bulldogs bats came alive for 13 hits en route to an 11-3 win. Matt Mirtsching also had a solid day on the mound, picking up the complete game win, allowing just five hits while striking out five.
Trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third, Concordia sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight runs, all earned, to take the lead for good. In the inning the Bulldogs had five hits. Six different Concordia hitters had RBIs in the inning, included a Willie Bush and Newsom who both had singles that plated a pair. Todd Stahlecker had a two singles in the inning and scored twice.
Stahlecker was the offense star of the game for Concordia, going a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with an RBI and three runs scored. Other Bulldogs with multiple hits included Newsom (3-for-4) and Brett Stewart (2-for-3). Newsom, Stewart, Willie Bush and Drew Urban also all had 2 RBIs in the game.
Concordia was scheduled to take on Midland on Sunday, but neither team’s field was playable. So the teams decided to play at the Smith Sports Complex in Hastings, Neb.
The Bulldogs were unable to keep the hot bats going, as Midland’s ace, Nate Bunton, held Concordia in check, allowing just two runs on two hits for the 6-2 victory. Stahlecker started the day off with a hit, his sixth consecutive at bat with a hit. Taylor Winslow had the Dogs other hit of the day.
In the second game the Bulldogs were able to put together more hits (8) but still could manage only two runs, losing again by a score of 6-2. Tad Tewes had a solid day from the plate with a 3-for-3 performance, while Urban went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Bulldog Baseball Has Five Named All-Conference
The Concordia baseball team has placed five players on the 2006 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) All-Conference team. The list consists 17 first-team members, 17 second-team members and an honorable mention list.
Junior second baseman Tad Tewes was named to the second-team while Drew Urban, Todd Stahlecker, Brett Stewart and Joe Brand were all tabbed honorable mention selections.
Tewes (Hudson, Wis.) led Concordia with a .340 batting average. He also had team highs in doubles (13), hits (48), total bases (57) and on base percentage (.419). In addition to his offensive numbers Tewes had a fielding percentage of .970, committing just six errors in 197 attempts.
Stahlecker (Lincolnville, Kan.), a sophomore outfielder came on strong during the conference season, hitting .333 in GPAC games. To finish the season Stahlecker hit safely in 21 of the last 24 games. The Bulldogs’ lead-off hitter, he also added 14 stolen bases in 15 attempts.
Urban (Seward, Neb.) was a rock for Concordia behind the plate. Catching in 42 of the Bulldogs 49 games he had only three errors for a .986 fielding percentage while throwing out 24 runners trying to steal.
Stewart (Richmond, Texas) served the Bulldogs as a centerfielder and pitcher. As a pitcher Stewart was second on the team in strikeouts, with 31, and he picked off six baserunners. From the plate he led the team in RBIs (41).
Brand (Missouri City, Texas) had the lowest ERA of the Bulldog pitching staff at 3.51. On the season he compiled a record of 4-3 in 10 appearances and was tied for the second most wins on the team.
Concordia Baseball Nets Two NAIA Scholar-Athletes
The Concordia baseball team had two athletes named 2006 NAIA Daktronics All-America Scholar-Athletes.
In order to be recognized as a NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athlete, individuals must carry a cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and be a junior or above in academic standing. Those receiving the honor were:
