GPAC preseason poll released

The Concordia University baseball team was picked to finish 11th in the 2010 Great Plains Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. 

Nebraska Wesleyan, who won the GPAC regular season title in 2009, is the coaches’ choice to win the 2010 league title with 130 points and six first place votes.  Dakota Wesleyan, who won last year’s GPAC postseason title, is second with 112 points and three first place votes.  Briar Cliff is third with 111 points, and Morningside is fourth with three first place votes and 109 points. 

Mount Marty is fifth with 103 points, while Doane and Sioux Falls are tied for sixth with 83 points.  Hastings College is eighth with 82 points followed by Midland Lutheran (73) and Northwestern College (55) to close out the top 10.  Concordia is 11th with 37 points, while Dana College (20) and Dordt College (16) round out the preseason poll. 

Concordia finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 14-32 to go along with an 8-16 mark in GPAC play.  The Bulldogs open the season Feb. 5 against Northwestern College at the Metrodome Classic.

Concordia drops a pair to Northwestern at the Metrodome

Concordia University opened its 2010 baseball season on Friday with two games at the Metrodome.  Northwestern College took game one by the score of 9-3, and the Raiders won game two by the final of 8-6 in six innings.  The Red Raiders improved to 3-1 on the season with the wins, while Concordia dropped to 0-2.

In game one, Northwestern jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Concordia responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to claim a 2-1 lead.  Martin Rodriguez singled and scored on an RBI triple by Brandon Pflug.  Nate Comes followed with an RBI single to score Pflug to give the Bulldogs the lead. 

In the bottom of the third, Concordia capitalized on a Northwestern error and wild pitch to grab a 3-1 lead.  Northwestern rallied with three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead.  The Raiders followed with a single run in the fifth, two runs in the sixth and two more runs in the seventh for the final score of 9-3.  Concordia managed just two hits after the third inning of play. 

Northwestern finished with 14 hits and three errors in game one, while Concordia totaled five hits and one error in the contest.  J. Kirkeby earned the win on the mound for the Raiders.  Kirkeby allowed three hits and three runs with one walk and three strikeouts in five innings of work.  John Couch (0-1) suffered the loss on the mound for Concordia.  He allowed four runs on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout in three innings of work. 

Pflug went 2-for-3 from the plate with an RBI and run scored to lead the way offensively for the Bulldogs in game one.  Comes went 1-for-3 with an RBI for Concordia. 

Northwestern scored five runs in the first inning and held off a late rally attempt by Concordia to earn an 8-6 win in the second game. 

The Raiders took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  The Raiders used just three hits and a Concordia error to grab the early lead.  Concordia pulled within four at 5-1 in the top of the third inning.  Zach Goodrich tripled and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Martin Rodriguez. 

Concordia added another single run in the top of the fourth inning via a Northwestern wild pitch.  Northwestern responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-2 lead. 

Concordia plated two runs in the fifth inning to pull within two at 6-4.  The Bulldogs used two hits, two hit batters and a walk to score the two runs.  Northwestern again had the answer in the bottom of the fifth, as the Raiders scored twice to take an 8-4 lead.  The Bulldogs added two runs in the sixth on RBI ground outs by Rodriguez and Nate Schmoll, but the Raiders held on for the 8-6 win. 

Each team finished with eight hits in game two.  Northwestern didn’t commit an error, while the Bulldogs had two errors in the contest.  T. Morris earned the win for the Raiders on the mound.  Morris allowed two runs on three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in four innings of work to pick up the win.  Steven Ivanoff (0-1) suffered the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs.  He allowed eight runs on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout in 4.2 innings of work. 

Zach Goodrich and Brandon Pflug each had two hits to pace Concordia at the plate.  Martin Rodriguez drove in two runs, while Nate Schmoll, Ty Shaw and Mitch Nathan all drove in single runs for the Bulldogs.

The Concordia University baseball team traveled to Kansas this past weekend for games against MidAmerica Nazarene University and Bethany College.  Concordia’s early season struggles continued, as the Bulldogs went 0-6 on the road trip. 

MidAmerica Nazarene earned 10-0 and 5-4 wins over Concordia on Friday.  In the first game, the Pioneers scored their 10 runs on just four hits.  Concordia committed four costly errors in the contest, and MNU took full advantage.  John Couch suffered the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs.  Zach Goodrich went 3-for-3 to lead the way offensively for Concordia, while Anthony Flores and Kevin Poppe added single hits. 

In the second game, Concordia took an early 3-1 lead.  However, the lead didn’t last long, as the Pioneers responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the second.  Trailing 4-3 heading into the third inning, Concordia’s Nate Schmoll connected on a solo homer to tie the game at 4-4.  The score remained the same until the sixth inning.  MNU plated the go-ahead run, and the Pioneers held on for the 5-4 win. 

Concordia dropped to 1-11 on the year with four straight losses to the Swedes of Bethany College on Saturday and Sunday.  Scores of the games were 3-2, 4-1, 7-6 and 9-1.  In Bethany’s 3-2 win in the first game, the Swedes scored the game-winning run in the seventh inning.  Concordia had just four hits and committed four errors in the loss.  Brad Ramp went the distance on the mound for the Bulldogs.  He allowed three runs on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts on the day. 

The offensive struggles continued for Concordia in the 4-1 loss to the Swedes.  The Bulldogs managed just three hits in the game.  Bethany scored three runs in the first inning, and Concordia couldn’t put together a rally.  Joe Bercerra had two hits, and Brandon Pflug added one hit for the Bulldogs. 

Bethany College rallied for a 7-6 win over the Bulldogs on Sunday.  The Swedes scored four runs in the seventh inning to secure the victory.  Joe Bercerra and Nate Schmoll each knocked in two runs to lead the way offensively for Concordia. 

Errors again cost the Bulldogs in their 9-1 loss to the Swedes on Sunday.  Concordia totaled four errors, and the Bethany College offense pounded nine hits in the game.  Zach Goodrich had two hits, and Tate Bedwell drove in the lone run for Concordia in the loss. 

Concordia travels to York College on March 10. 

Concordia travels to Oklahoma and Texas over spring break

The Concordia University baseball team will travel to Oklahoma and Texas to compete in seven games over spring break.  The Bulldogs open the trip at Northwest Oklahoma State University on March 14.  Concordia then makes its way to Texas for games against Howard Payne University, Texas Lutheran University, Valley City State and UT-Brownsville from March 17-19.  The Bulldogs conclude the trip with another game at Northwest Oklahoma State University on March 21.

Concordia falls to Northwestern Oklahoma State, 15-9

Northwestern Oklahoma State University earned a 15-9 baseball win over Concordia University on Sunday afternoon.  The Rangers pounded 14 hits in the game and took full advantage of five errors by the Concordia defense to secure the win.  NWOSU improved to 13-8 on the season with the win, while Concordia dropped its seventh straight game to fall to 1-12 on the year. 

Concordia got off to a great start and took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Zach Goodrich led off the game with a triple, and Anthony Flores walked.  With one out, Joe Bercerra scored them both with a two-run double down the left field line. 

The Rangers quickly responded with three runs in the bottom of the first, using three hits, a balk and an error to take a 3-2 lead. 

Concordia added two more runs in the second to reclaim the lead at 4-3.  With two outs and nobody on, Martin Rodriguez singled to center and added a stolen base to advance to second.  Goodrich followed with an RBI single up the middle.  From there, Goodrich stole second and eventually scored on two wild pitches. 

NWOSU grabbed a 5-4 lead with two more runs in the bottom of the third.  Dustin Williams and Vincent Valdez each had RBI singles to help the Rangers reclaim the lead. 

The Bulldogs responded with a huge fourth inning.  Concordia scored four runs to take an 8-5 lead.  Rodriguez had an RBI double, and Bercerra added an RBI single for the Bulldogs.  Concordia also plated two runs on a throwing error by NWOSU in the inning. 

The Rangers rallied with four runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 9-8.  Valdez smacked a two-run single, and Williams also drove in a run for NWOSU in the fourth.  Concordia also committed two costly errors in the inning. 

Northwestern Oklahoma State added a single run in the fifth to take a 10-8 lead.  Zach Theademan had an RBI single in the inning for the Rangers. 

Concordia scored a single run in the sixth to pull within one at 10-9.  Nate Schmoll came through with an RBI single to score Brandon Pflug.  The Bulldogs had an opportunity for more runs but left runners at second and third. 

The Rangers scored five runs in the sixth to take a 15-9 lead.  Theademan’s three-RBI triple highlighted the huge inning for NWOSU. 

The Concordia offense managed just three hits in the final four innings, as relief pitcher Calvin Wright found his rhythm on the mound.  Wright (1-0) allowed two runs on six hits with three walks and 11 strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work.

Brad Ramp (1-2) suffered the loss on the mound for Concordia.  Ramp allowed nine runs (three earned) on eight hits with two walks and one strikeout in 3.2 innings of work.

Zach Theademan and Vincent Valdez each drove in four runs to lead the way offensively for Northwestern Oklahoma State University. 

Joe Bercerra went 3-for-5 with three RBI’s for Concordia offensively.  Martin Rodriguez also added three hits and drove in a run, while Zach Goodrich added two hits, two runs scored and an RBI for the Bulldogs. 

Concordia battles Howard Payne University on March 16 in a 3 p.m. contest.

Howard Payne used a four-run first inning to earn a 4-1 victory over the Concordia baseball team on Tuesday afternoon.  The teams combined for just eight hits in the contest, but the Howard Payne pitching staff was too much for the Bulldogs to handle.  Howard Payne improved to 10-8 on the season with the win.  Concordia dropped to 1-13 on the year with the loss. 

The Yellow Jackets used two sacrifice flies, a Concordia error and a two-run triple by Rey Rosales to grab a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Concordia scored its only run in the fifth inning.  Martin Rodriguez doubled with one out in the inning and later scored on an error. 

Howard Payne had just three hits in the game, while Concordia totaled five hits.  The Yellow Jackets had two errors compared to one for the Bulldogs.  Four pitchers combined on the shutout for Howard Payne.  Steven Ivanoff (0-5) suffered the loss for the Bulldogs.  Ivanoff worked all eight innings and allowed four runs on three hits with four walks and seven strikeouts on the day. 

Concordia takes on Texas Lutheran University on Wednesday in a 1 p.m. contest. 

Late rally not enough as Bulldogs fall at Texas Lutheran, 9-5

Texas Lutheran used two big innings to secure a 9-5 baseball win over Concordia on Wednesday afternoon.  TLU scored four runs in the fourth and sixth inning, and a late rally attempt by Concordia wasn’t enough.  Texas Lutheran improved to 15-5 on the year with the win.  Concordia slipped to 1-14 on the year with the loss. 

The Bulldogs of Texas Lutheran used a single, two wild pitches and a sacrifice fly to claim a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.  Concordia plated a single run in the third inning to tie the game at 1-1.  Brock Murphy walked and advanced to third on a Zach Goodrich single.  Martin Rodriguez drove in Murphy to tie the ballgame. 

Concordia took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on a Nate Schmoll homer.  However, the lead was short lived for Concordia.  With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Texas Lutheran’s Chris Green blasted a grand slam to give TLU a 5-2 advantage. 

Texas Lutheran kept the pressure on with four more runs in the sixth inning to make the score 9-2.  Ryan Nokelby’s two-run single highlighted the big sixth inning for the host Bulldogs.

The score remained the same until the top of the ninth.  Concordia scored three runs to make things interesting.  Goodrich, Rodriguez and Brandon Pflug all drove in runs for the Bulldogs in the ninth.  Concordia had the bases still loaded with one out, but Texas Lutheran turned a double play to finish off the victory. 

Texas Lutheran finished with 12 hits on the day.  Clay Childress went 3-for-4 with a run scored to lead the way.  Chris Green, Ryan Nokelby and Darwin Lucero all added two hits for the Bulldogs.  Sean Madden earned the win on the mound, and Tom Hembree recorded his fourth save of the year for Texas Lutheran. 

Zach Goodrich went 2-for-4 with an RBI to pace the Concordia offense, while Martin Rodriguez drove in two runs.  John Couch (0-4) suffered the loss on the mound.  Couch allowed five runs on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work. 

Concordia battles Valley City State University and UT-Brownsville on Thursday.   

Bulldogs split contests in Texas

The Concordia University baseball team split two games in Texas on Thursday.  The Bulldogs defeated Valley City State by the score of 14-9 in the first game.  The win snapped a nine-game losing streak for the Bulldogs.  UT-Brownsville defeated Concordia by the score of 6-2 in the final game of the day.  Concordia’s record now sits at 2-15.   

In the win over Valley City State, the Bulldogs scored in each of the first five innings.  Concordia grabbed a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first and added three more runs in the second for a 6-0 advantage.  VCSU responded with five runs in the second to cut the lead to one at 6-5.  Concordia stretched the lead to 14-5 with two runs in the third, one run in the fourth and five runs in the fifth.  The Vikings scored four runs in the fifth, but the Bulldogs preserved the 14-9 win. 

Zach Goodrich went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI’s to lead the way for Concordia offensively.  Martin Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored, and Nate Schmoll was also 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.  Ray Finley also added two hits and drove in four runs for the Bulldogs. 

Jacob Yurich (1-1) picked up the win on the mound for Concordia.  He allowed five runs on 11 hits with one walk and one strikeout in five innings.  Josh Anderson pitched the final two innings for the Bulldogs and allowed just one hit with three strikeouts. 

Josh Evans and Dustin Greggory drove in two runs apiece for Valley City State.  Preston Jensen took the loss on the mound after allowing seven runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings of work.   

In the loss to UT-Brownsville, the Scorpions took a 3-0 lead in the first.  Concordia plated two runs in the top of the second, but UT-Brownsville added three more runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-2 lead.  The Brownsville pitching staff took over from there.  Concordia managed just three hits in the game and left nine runners on base, and the Scorpions secured the 6-2 win.

Goodrich, Schmoll and Ty Shaw had the only hits in the game for Concordia.  Goodrich and Brock Murphy each had an RBI for the Bulldogs.  Matt Ginn drove in three runs to lead the way for the UT-Brownsville offense. 

Concordia takes on Valley City State again on Friday with first pitch scheduled for noon.

The Concordia University baseball team dropped to 2-16 on the year with an 11-10 loss to Valley City State on Friday afternoon.  The game went 10 innings and featured several lead changes.  Valley City State improved to 3-7 on the year with the win. 

Each team scored a single run in the first inning.  Concordia grabbed a slim 2-1 lead with a run in the second.  VCSU plated five runs in the third to take a 6-2 lead, but Concordia cut the lead to 6-5 with three runs in the bottom of the inning.  The Bulldogs took a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the fifth, but the Vikings again had the answer.  VCSU scored three runs in the sixth and added a single run in the seventh to take a 10-7 lead.  Concordia rallied with two runs in the eighth and a single run in the ninth to force extra innings.  The Vikings scored the winning run in the top of the 10th inning. 

Valley City State finished with 16 hits.  However, the Vikings left 13 runners on base and committed eight errors in the game.  Concordia finished with just seven hits and left 11 runners on base.  The Bulldog defense committed three errors on the day. 

Matt Borgford went 5-for-5 with three runs scored and five RBI’s to pace VCSU offensively.  Cory Amason added four hits, and Preston Jensen drove in two runs for the Vikings.  Shane Schoeneberg picked up the win on the mound, and Derek Zitzow earned the save for Valley City State. 

Nate Schmoll went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI for Concordia.  Zach Goodrich scored three runs and drove in one for the Bulldogs.  Brad Ramp started the game on the mound for Concordia and allowed six runs on seven hits in three innings of work.  Concordia used seven pitchers in the game.

Concordia concludes its road trip with a game at Northwest Oklahoma State University on March 21.  First pitch is scheduled for noon.  

Concordia earns easy 16-4 win over Dana College

Concordia cruised to a 16-4 win over Dana College on Wednesday evening in Blair.  Concordia pounded 19 hits in the victory, and the Dana defense committed six errors on the night.  The Bulldogs improved to 3-16 on the year with the win, while Dana dropped to 2-9 on the year with the loss. 

After a scoreless first inning, the Concordia offense put runs on the board for six straight innings.  The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.  Dustin Matlock had an RBI double, and Zach Goodrich added an RBI single for Concordia. 

Concordia added to its lead with three more runs in the third.  Mitch Nathan’s RBI single, and Matlock’s two-run triple gave the Bulldogs a 5-0 lead.  Concordia increased its lead to 7-0 in the fourth.  The Bulldogs used two hits, a passed ball, a wild pitch and a Dana College error to plate the two runs. 

Concordia plated one run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Martin Rodriguez to make the score 8-0.  Dana’s Alex Johnson connected on a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Bulldog lead to six at 8-2.  However, the Bulldogs responded with two more runs in the sixth for a 10-2 lead.  Ty Shaw’s RBI single highlighted the Concordia sixth inning. 

Dana College added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Concordia put the game away in the top of the seventh.  The Bulldogs used four hits and three Viking errors to score six runs and take a 16-4 lead.  Tate Bedwell drove in three with a double, and Goodrich added an RBI double for the Bulldogs in the seventh.  Dana College went quickly and quietly in the bottom of the seventh, and Concordia settled for the 16-4 win. 

Zach Goodrich went 4-for-5 with two RBI’s and two runs scored for Concordia offensively.  Dustin Matlock was 3-for-5 with three RBI’s and two runs scored, while Joe Becerra and Raymond Cooper added two hits apiece for the Bulldogs.  Brock Murphy (1-1) pitched the first five innings to pick up the win for Concordia on the mound.  Murphy allowed just two runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts on the evening. 

Jake Pojar and Alex Johnson each drove in two runs for Dana College.  Andy Bern allowed five runs on seven hits in three innings of work to take the loss on the mound. 

Concordia opens conference play at home this weekend.  The Bulldogs host Northwestern College on March 26 at 2 p.m. and Briar Cliff University on March 27 at 1 p.m.  

Concordia opens GPAC play with two wins over Northwestern

The Concordia University baseball team opened conference play with two wins over Northwestern College on Friday afternoon in Seward.  Concordia won its third straight game and improved to 5-16 overall and 2-0 in the GPAC with the wins.  Northwestern dropped to 14-8 overall and 2-2 in conference play with the losses.

“With the Dana win and now these two wins today, we’ve really put three solid games together,” said Concordia head coach Jeremy Geidel.  “We always focus on our pitching and defense, but we’ve had some solid offense lately as well.” 

Concordia cruised to a 10-0 win in game one.  The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.  Match Nathan doubled with one out and later scored on an RBI single by Anthony Flores. 

The Bulldogs broke the game wide open with six runs in the third inning.  Brock Murphy led off the inning with a single, and Zach Goodrich followed with a double which advanced Murphy to third.  Martin Rodriguez followed with a two-run single.  Rodriguez was driven in on an RBI double by Nate Schmoll.  Nathan followed with an RBI single, and Dustin Matlock connected on his second homer of the year to round out the scoring in the Bulldog third inning. 

Concordia added a single run in the four on an RBI single by Rodriguez.  Rodriguez and Schmoll added RBI singles in the bottom of the sixth for the final score of 10-0. 

Martin Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with four RBI’s and a run scored, and Zach Goodrich was 2-for-4 with three runs scored to lead the way offensively for the Bulldogs.  Nate Schmoll, Mitch Nathan and Brock Murphy all added two hits for the Bulldogs. 

Jacob Yurich picked up the win on the mound for Concordia and is now 2-1 on the year.  Yurich allowed just four hits with two walks and one strikeout on the day. 

In game two, Concordia used two big innings to pull away for a 12-5 victory.  The Bulldogs opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first.  Goodrich led off the inning with a double and scored on yet another RBI single by Rodriguez.  Rodriguez later scored on a wild pitch to give the Bulldogs the early 2-0 advantage. 

Northwestern tied the game at 2-2 in the second.  Mike Shields had an RBI triple, and Brad Payne added an RBI single for the Red Raiders in the inning.  Northwestern took a 3-2 lead with a single run in the third.  Shields drove in the run with a sacrifice fly. 

An opportunistic Concordia offense took advantage of Northwestern mistakes in the bottom of the third.  The Bulldogs used one hit, two Northwestern errors and several walks to plate five runs and take a 7-3 lead. 

Northwestern pulled within two with two runs in the fifth inning.  Matt Gray and Chuck Stith had RBI singles for the Raiders in the fifth. 

In the bottom of the sixth, Concordia put the game away with five more runs.  Schmoll had an RBI triple, and Brandon Pflug added an RBI double early in the inning.  Anthony Flores, Dustin Matlock and Tate Bedwell also added RBI singles in the inning for the Bulldogs. 

Rodriguez and Schmoll each connected on two hits to pace the Concordia offense in game two.  Flores and Bedwell drove in two runs apiece for the Bulldogs.  Brad Ramp (2-2) picked up the win on the mound.  Ramp allowed five runs on four hits with five walks and a strikeout in four innings of work.  Josh Anderson and Jacob Shaffer finished the game for the Bulldogs.

“We had a lot of guys make plays for us today,” commented Geidel.  “We were really looking forward to conference play.  Northwestern is one of the top teams in this conference.  We just wanted to play our game, and today is a real confidence builder for us.”   

Concordia hosts Briar Cliff University in a double-header beginning at 11 a.m. on Monday.   

Concordia pushes winning streak to five with sweep of Briar Cliff University

The Concordia University baseball team continued its hot start to the conference season with a sweep of Briar Cliff on Monday afternoon in Seward.  Scores of the games were 10-3 and 12-5.  The Bulldogs have won five straight games and currently sit at 7-16 overall and 4-0 in conference games.  Briar Cliff slipped to 6-22 overall and 1-3 in GPAC play with the losses.

In game one, Concordia jumped out to an early lead and cruised to the 10-3 win.  The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Zach Goodrich and James Dawson scored the runs, and Anthony Flores had an RBI double to highlight the Concordia first inning. 

In the bottom of the second, Concordia used seven hits to score six runs and take an 8-0 lead.  Dustin Matlock homered in the inning, while Mitch Nathan and Brock Murphy added RBI doubles in the frame.  Goodrich also had an RBI single in the inning. 

Briar Cliff plated a single run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Jeremy Majerus.  The Chargers added two more runs in the fourth on a two run homer by Lincoln Dunham.  However, that is as close as the Chargers would get. 

Concordia tacked on a single run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Flores.  The Bulldogs scored again in the sixth on an RBI single by Nathan for the final score of 10-3. 

Concordia had 11 hits in the game compared to seven for the Chargers.  John Couch picked up his first win of the year on the mound for the Bulldogs.  Couch allowed the three runs on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts on the day. 

Flores went 3-for-3 with three RBI’s to lead the way offensively for Concordia in game one.  Nathan was 2-for-3 with two RBI’s and a run scored, while Matlock chipped in with three RBI’s and two runs scored for the Bulldogs. 

Concordia again got off to a tremendous start in game two.  Briar Cliff scored two in the top of the first on a single by pitcher Jacob Olivas, but the Bulldogs were quick to respond.  In the bottom of the first, Concordia used five hits and several wild pitches to grab a 6-2 lead.  Nate Schmoll and Mitch Nathan had RBI doubles, while Brandon Pflug and Ray Finley added back-to-back homers in the Bulldog first inning. 

Concordia added a single run in the third to take a 7-2 lead.  With two outs in the inning, Flores earned a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Pflug followed with a clutch single to bring home Flores for the seventh run of the game for Concordia. 

Briar Cliff scored two in the fourth to pull within three at 7-4.  BCU had just one hit in the inning but used a Concordia error and a sacrifice fly to plate the two runs. 

The Bulldogs again had the answer in the bottom of the fourth.  Concordia scored five runs on four hits and one BCU error to take a 12-4 lead.  The Bulldogs added two more homers, as Schmoll and Matlock went deep in the inning. 

Briar Cliff scored a single run in the fifth on the second homer of the day by Lincoln Dunham.  However, the Concordia pitching staff shut the door the rest of the way, and the Bulldogs settled for the 12-5 victory. 

Steven Ivanoff (1-5) picked up the win for the Bulldogs on the mound.  He allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts in five innings of work.  Josh Anderson and Jacob Shaffer each pitched scoreless innings in relief for Concordia. 

Schmoll, Pflug and Murphy all had two hits for Concordia offensively.  Schmoll drove in three and scored two on the day, while Pflug added three RBI’s and a run scored for the Bulldogs. 

Concordia steps out of GPAC play on Tuesday with a single game against Peru State College with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. in Seward.   

Big first inning leads Peru State to 16-4 win over Concordia

Peru State College scored 11 runs in the top of the first inning, and the visiting Bobcats cruised to a 16-4 win over Concordia on Tuesday afternoon.  The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Bulldogs.  Concordia dropped to 7-17 on the year with the loss, while Peru State improved to 10-18 on the year with the win. 

Peru State erupted for 11 runs on seven hits in the first inning.  The Bobcats had two grand slams in the inning by Alejandro Gonzalez and Clayton Brigham.  Ryan Baroudi, Tyler Croushorn and Matt Martin also added RBI’s for the Bobcats in the first. 

Baroudi gave Peru State a 12-0 lead in the second with a solo homer.  The Bobcats added four more runs in the third to take a 16-0 lead.  Gonzalez, Andre Kinder, Kyle Fredrickson and Baroudi all drove in runs in the Bobcat third inning. 

Concordia got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Nate Schmoll and Martin Rodriguez drove in the runs for the Bulldogs. 

The Bulldogs added a single run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Schmoll.  Concordia scored again in the sixth on an RBI single by Raymond Cooper for the final score of 16-4. 

Peru State had 17 hits in the game compared to seven for Concordia.  Alejandro Gonzalez had three hits and drove in five runs to lead the Bobcat offense.  Clayton Brigham added two hits and four RBI’s, while Andre Kinder had three hits and two runs scored for the Bobcats. 

Zach Goodrich went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for Concordia in the loss.  Nate Schmoll went 1-for-4 and drove in two runs for the Bulldogs. 

Concordia returns to GPAC play with a home double-header against Nebraska Wesleyan on April 2.

The Concordia University baseball team split two games with Dana College on Saturday afternoon in Seward.  Dana took game one by the score of 8-4, and Concordia responded with an 11-1 victory in game two.  Concordia is now 8-18 overall and 5-1 in the GPAC.  Dana is 4-14 overall and 2-4 in the GPAC. 

Concordia was unable to overcome a tough start to game one.  The Bulldogs committed three errors in the first two innings, and Dana took advantage to grab an early lead.  Following a Concordia error in the top of the first, Dana’s Chase Hunter smacked a two-run homer to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.  The Dana second inning began with another Concordia error and a wild pitch.  JJ Stanard’s two-run double gave Dana a 4-0 lead, and Alex Johnson’s RBI single increased the Viking lead to 5-0. 

Concordia scored a single run in the third.  Zach Goodrich singled and stole second.  Nate Schmoll drove Goodrich in with an RBI single to cut the Viking lead to four at 5-1.  The Bulldogs tacked on another run in the fourth on an RBI single by Anthony Flores.  In the bottom of the fifth, Concordia plated two runs on just one hit to pull within two at 6-4.  Martin Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch, and Schmoll scored on a sacrifice fly by Dustin Matlock in the Bulldog fifth inning. 

Dana put the game away with two more runs in the top of the sixth.  Following back-to-back singles by the Vikings, Chase Hunter struck again with a two-run double just out of the reach of Martin Rodriguez in left field.  Concordia was unable to rally in the late innings, and the Vikings secured the 8-4 win. 

Dana finished with eight hits and two errors.  Concordia had six hits and a costly four errors.  Otis Seals (2-4) allowed four runs on six hits with five walks and four strikeouts to pick up the win on the mound for Dana.  Jacob Yurich (2-2) allowed six runs (three earned) on three hits with four walks and four strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work to take the loss for the Bulldogs. 

Concordia took control of game two early on and cruised to the easy 11-1 win in five innings.  The Bulldogs used two hits, a Dana error and a pair of wild pitches to take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first.  Schmoll delivered an RBI triple to highlight the Bulldog first inning. 

Concordia added a single run in the second.  Tate Bedwell walked and advanced to third on a single by Goodrich.  Rodriguez followed with an RBI single to increase the Bulldog lead to 4-0. 

In the third inning, Dana got on the board with an RBI single by Seals.  However, Concordia used three hits and took advantage of two Dana errors to plate three more runs in the bottom of the third.  Brandon Pflug and Matlock each scored on Viking errors and Brock Murphy added an RBI single to increase the Bulldog lead to 7-1.

Concordia made it 9-1 in the fourth inning.  Rodriguez walked and scored on a long homer by Schmoll.  It was the fourth homer of the year for Schmoll.  Goodrich and Schmoll each added RBI singles in the fifth for the final score of 11-1. 

Brad Ramp (3-2) worked all five innings and allowed just the one run on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts to earn the win for Concordia.  Alex Johnson (0-4) suffered the loss for Dana.  He allowed seven runs (three earned) on six hits with two walks and one strikeout. 

Schmoll was 3-for-4 with four RBI’s and two runs scored for the Bulldogs.  Goodrich added three hits, and Brock Murphy added two for Concordia.  Bob Reynolds and Chase Hunter had two hits apiece for Dana College in game two. 

Concordia will host Nebraska Wesleyan on Monday in a GPAC double-header beginning at 3 p.m.

The Concordia University baseball team split two games with Nebraska Wesleyan on Tuesday in Lincoln.  The Prairie Wolves picked up a 6-0 win in game one, and Concordia took game two by the score of 4-1.  The Bulldogs are 9-19 overall and 6-2 in conference play, while the Wolves are 7-8 overall and 3-5 in the GPAC. 

Cory Hilgenkamp pitched a gem for Wesleyan in game one.  The Bulldogs managed just two hits in the game as Hilgenkamp improved to 2-2 on the year.  He worked all seven innings with just one walk and eight strikeouts.  Nate Schmoll and Kevin Poppe had the only hits of the game for the Bulldogs. 

Hilgenkamp also got the offense rolling for the Prairie Wolves in the first game with a two-run homer in the top of the first.  An RBI double by Josh Ostrom gave Wesleyan a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning.  NWU used two hits and a Concordia error to plate two more runs in the sixth.  The Wolves added a single run in the seventh for the final score of 6-0.  John Couch (1-5) suffered the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs.  He allowed three runs on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts in five innings of work.  Josh Anderson and Micah May pitched the final two innings for Concordia in game one. 

Game two was a much different story as Concordia’s Steven Ivanoff was in control on the mound from start to finish.  Ivanoff (2-5) worked all seven innings and allowed just one unearned run with no walks and seven strikeouts in the game. 

In the bottom of the first, Zach Goodrich led off the inning with a single.  Goodrich stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Two batters later, Schmoll’s RBI groundout gave Concordia a quick 1-0 lead.  Wesleyan tied the game in the top of the second.  The Wolves had just one hit in the inning, but two Concordia errors led to the unearned run.     

Concordia quickly responded with three runs in the bottom of the second.  Mitch Nathan walked to lead off the inning.  A single by Kevin Poppe moved pinch runner James Dawson to second base.  A sacrifice bunt by Ray Finley advanced the runners to second and third with just one out.  Brock Murphy followed with an RBI single to score Dawson, and Poppe also scored on a Nebraska Wesleyan throwing error.  Goodrich added an RBI single in the inning to give the Bulldogs a 4-1 advantage. 

The run support was more than enough for Ivanoff, who shut down the Nebraska Wesleyan offense.  Goodrich and Poppe had two hits apiece to pace the Concordia offensive attack in game two.  Ryan Dolezal suffered the loss on the mound for Wesleyan.  He allowed the four runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts in six innings of work.  

Concordia loses two at Sioux Falls

Concordia University dropped a pair of games at Sioux Falls on Saturday.  Scores of the games were 11-1 and 5-2.  Sioux Falls improved to 19-13 overall and 7-3 in the GPAC with the wins, while Concordia slipped to 9-21 overall and 6-4 in the GPAC with the losses. 

USF controlled game one from start to finish.  Concordia struggled offensively, as USF’s Chris Nichols improved to 6-1 on the season for the Cougars.  Nichols allowed just one run on six hits with one walk and one strikeout in the game.  The Bulldogs also struggled defensively with six errors in the game. 

The host Cougars grabbed the early advantage with three runs in the first inning.  Andrew Jenkins smacked a two-run double, and Cody Burgener added an RBI single in the USF first inning.  Sioux Falls added three more runs in the third inning to take a 6-0 lead. 

The Cougars continued to pour it on with two runs in the fourth and fifth innings and a single run in the sixth.  Concordia scored its lone run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Zach Goodrich.  Goodrich went 2-for-3 in the game.  Dustin Matlock, Kevin Poppe, Raymond Cooper and Brock Murphy added the other hits for Concordia in game one. 

Jacob Yurich suffered the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs.  He allowed eight runs (four earned) on seven hits with two walks in four innings of work. 

Concordia opened the scoring in game two with a single run in the first inning.  Goodrich led off the inning with a double.  Tate Bedwell’s RBI single gave the Bulldogs the early advantage. 

Sioux Falls tied the game in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Brennden Ward.  Concordia reclaimed the lead with a run in the third, but the Bulldogs missed a golden opportunity to do some more damage.  The Bulldogs loaded the bases with nobody out.  An RBI groundout by Anthony Flores scored the go-ahead run and put runners at second and third with just one out.  However, a strike out and ground out ended the Concordia threat with no more damage done. 

Concordia held the 2-1 lead until the bottom of the fifth inning.  The Cougars loaded the bases, and Andrew Jenkins again delivered with a two-run single.  A sacrifice fly and an RBI double by Cody Burgener gave Sioux Falls a 5-2 lead.  The Bulldogs were unable to mount a rally in the closing innings, and USF completed the sweep. 

Mitch Nathan went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Flores and Bedwell each had RBI’s for the Bulldogs in game two.  Brad Ramp suffered the loss on the mound for Concordia.  He allowed four runs on five hits with two walks in 4.1 innings of work. 

Concordia travels to Mount Marty College on Sunday to continue GPAC play.  The double-header begins at 1 p.m. in Yankton.  

Concordia goes 1-1 at Mount Marty

Concordia University split two games at Mount Marty College on Sunday afternoon.  The host Lancers cruised to a 13-0 victory in game one.  Concordia responded with a 4-3 win in game two.  Mount Marty is 22-10 overall and 10-2 in conference play.  Concordia is 10-22 overall and 7-5 in the GPAC. 

In game one, Concordia managed just one hit off Mount Marty starter Josh Damewood.  Damewood worked all five innings and struck out nine batters in the game.  The Lancers took a 2-0 lead in the second and added three more runs in the third.  Mount Marty broke the game wide open with eight runs in the fourth inning.  The Lancers finished the game with 15 hits.  Concordia’s defense struggled with four errors in the contest. 

John Couch suffered the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs in game one.  He allowed eight runs (six earned) on 12 hits with two walks and two strikeouts in three innings of work.  Joe Becerra had the lone hit for Concordia in the game. 

In game two, Concordia jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning.  Anthony Flores singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Ray Finley.  Two batters later, Josh Nance delivered an RBI single to put the Bulldogs on top. 

The Bulldog lead didn’t last long, as Mount Marty responded with two runs in the bottom of the second.  Zach Lambrechts led off the frame with a single.  Andy Turbak followed with a homer to give the Lancers the lead. 

In the top of the fourth inning, Concordia plated two runs on four hits to reclaim the lead at 3-2.  Flores doubled to lead off the inning, and another sacrifice by Finley advanced Flores to third with one away.  Brock Murphy delivered an RBI single to score Flores.  Following a stolen base and a walk to Zach Goodrich, Martin Rodriguez singled to load the bases.  Nate Schmoll came through with an RBI single to score Murphy to give the Bulldogs the lead. 

Mount Marty scored a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3.  The score remained the same until the top of the seventh.  With two outs in the inning, Concordia’s Dustin Matlock hit a solo homer to give the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead.  Jacob Shaffer shut the door on the Mount Marty offense in the bottom of the inning, and Concordia held on for the dramatic 4-3 win. 

Nate Schmoll went 3-for-4 with an RBI for Concordia in game two.  Dustin Matlock went 2-for-3 with the game-winning homer for the Bulldogs.  Shaffer picked up the win in relief.  He allowed no runs on just one hit with four strikeouts in the final two innings.  Josh Homme suffered the loss on the mound for Mount Marty.

Peru State hangs on for 23-22 win over Concordia

Peru State scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and held on for a 23-22 baseball win over Concordia on Tuesday.  The Bulldogs dropped to 10-23 on the year with the loss. 

Concordia scored in six of the nine innings and pounded 19 hits in the game.  Peru State had 18 hits in the game.  Both defenses struggled.  Concordia totaled five errors in the game, while Peru State had three. 

Tate Bedwell had a huge day at the plate for Concordia offensively.  Bedwell went 4-for-6 with three runs scored and eight RBI’s.  Dustin Matlock and Zach Goodrich each drove in three runs and Joe Becerra added two RBI’s in the loss. 

Doane coasts to 12-0 win over Concordia

Concordia dropped to 10-24 on the season with a 12-0 baseball loss to Doane College on Wednesday afternoon in Crete.  The Tigers improved to 21-12 with the victory. 

Doane scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the early advantage.  The Tigers totaled five hits, and the Concordia defense committed three errors in the inning.  Jason West drove in two with a single, and Austin Tharp added an RBI single for Doane in the first inning. 

Doane plated three more runs in the third inning to increase the lead to 8-0.  Anthony Hincy and AJ Spanel each had RBI singles, and Dean Henson delivered a sacrifice fly for the Tigers.  The Concordia defense continued to struggle with two more errors in the inning. 

The Tigers continued to pour it on with four more runs in the fourth inning.  Tharp had a two-run double, and Spanel added another RBI single for Doane. 

Concordia didn’t have a hit until the fifth inning, when Ty Shaw singled to lead off the inning.  The Bulldogs finished with just three hits total in the game.  Doane starter Mike Korsakas struck out eight Bulldog batters in the first four innings of the game.  Korsakas improved to 1-1 for the Tigers.  He worked all seven innings with two walks and nine strikeouts. 

Brock Murphy (1-3) suffered the loss for the Bulldogs.  He allowed 12 runs (six earned) on 12 hits with two walks and two strikeouts.  Anthony Flores, Tate Bedwell and Ty Shaw had the three hits for Concordia. 

Concordia travels to Dakota Wesleyan on April 17.  The double-header is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

Dakota Wesleyan University picked up two wins over Concordia in GPAC baseball on Saturday.  Scores of the games were 5-2 and 9-6.  The Tigers improved to 23-14 overall and 10-4 in GPAC play with the wins.  Concordia has now lost four straight to fall to 10-26 overall and 7-7 in GPAC play. 

In game one, Concordia grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first.  The Bulldogs used one hit, two walks and a DWU error to score an unearned run in the inning.  The host Tigers responded with two runs in the bottom of the second.  Nick Loera and John Chaisson each singled and advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt.  A two-run single by Clayton Grimstad gave the Tigers a 2-1 advantage. 

DWU tacked on another run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Chaisson.  The Tigers made it 4-1 in the fifth on an RBI single by Ryan Santiago.  Concordia plated a single unearned run in the sixth to cut the DWU lead to two at 4-2, but Dakota Wesleyan’s Casey Solem connected on a solo homer in the bottom of the inning to push the lead back to three at 5-2.  The Bulldogs went quietly in the seventh, and DWU settled for the 5-2 victory. 

Dakota Wesleyan had 10 hits in game one compared to eight for Concordia.  Grimstad went 2-for-4 with two RBI’s to lead the way offensively for DWU.  Solem, Loera and Chaisson all added two hits for the Tigers. 

Ethan Opsahl (6-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Tigers.  He allowed one run (unearned) on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts in five innings of work.  Nick Capucilli allowed a single run in the sixth, and Thomas Pickett picked up his fifth save of the year with a perfect seventh inning. 

Jacob Yurich (2-4) suffered the loss for Concordia.  He allowed four runs on eight hits with four walks and one strikeout in four innings.  Jordan Stirtz and Tate Bedwell each pitched an inning of relief for the Bulldogs. 

A big second inning helped Dakota Wesleyan to the 9-6 win in game two.  Just as in game one, Concordia jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first.  Kevin Poppe delivered a two-run double with two outs to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.  Concordia increased its lead to 3-0 in the second on an RBI single by Zach Goodrich. 

The Tigers had the answer in the bottom of the second.  DWU used five hits and two Bulldog errors to score six runs in the inning.  The Tigers opened the inning with four consecutive hits, including an RBI single by Shaun Petersen.  Clayton Grimstad added a sacrifice fly, and Casey Solem knocked in two with a triple to highlight the huge inning for Dakota Wesleyan. 

Concordia used a hit, a hit batter, a sacrifice bunt and a DWU wild pitch to plate a single run in the third to cut the lead to two at 6-4.  However, the Tigers again had the answer with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 9-4 lead.  DWU had two sacrifice flies and capitalized on a Concordia error to score the three runs. 

The Bulldogs added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.  Martin Rodriguez had an RBI double in the sixth, and Ty Shaw was hit by a pitch to drive in a run in the seventh for the final score of 9-6. 

Jeff Sanchez (4-2) allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts in five innings of work to pick up the win for the Tigers.  Pickett earned his sixth save of the year for DWU. 

Brad Ramp (3-4) took the loss for the Bulldogs.  Ramp allowed nine runs (six earned) on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts in just three innings of work.  Josh Anderson and Jacob Shaffer worked the final three innings for Concordia. 

Zach Goodrich went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Bulldogs offensively in game two.  Nate Schmoll and Kevin Poppe added two hits apiece. 

Concordia hosts Doane College in a GPAC double-header on Sunday.  First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Plum Creek Park.

The Doane College offense was too much for Concordia, as the visiting Tigers picked up 17-11 and 14-7 GPAC baseball wins over Concordia on Sunday.  Doane improved to 24-13 overall and 8-8 in GPAC play with the wins.  Concordia dropped to 10-28 overall and 7-9 in GPAC play with the losses. 

The Bulldogs held a 6-0 lead after three innings in game one.  In the bottom of the first, Martin Rodriguez doubled with one out in the inning.  Nate Schmoll’s RBI single gave Concordia a 1-0 lead.  The Bulldogs added five runs in the third inning.  Ty Shaw’s two-run single and an RBI single by Rodriguez highlighted the Bulldog third. 

The Tigers rallied with a huge fourth inning.  Doane erupted for 10 runs on eight hits and two Bulldog errors.  Mike Albert connected on a two-run blast, and Luke Henderson added a two-run single in the inning for the Tigers. 

The Bulldogs scored a single run in the fourth on a solo homer by Dustin Matlock.  But Doane responded with four more runs in the fifth to grab a 14-7 lead.  Jason West’s leadoff homer was the only hit in the inning for Doane.  The Tigers capitalized on several walks, a wild pitch and a hit batter in the inning. 

The Bulldogs scored twice in the sixth to cut the lead to five at 14-9.  Kevin Poppe had an RBI single, and Anthony Flores delivered an RBI groundout for Concordia.  Doane again answered and put another crooked number on the board with three runs in the seventh.  Nate Schmoll and Brandon Pflug each had RBI groundouts for Concordia in the bottom of the seventh for the final score of 17-11. 

Evan Koetter (3-0) picked up the win in relief for the Tigers.  Josh Anderson (0-1) took the loss in relief for the Bulldogs.  Zach Goodrich, Schmoll and Shaw all drove in a pair of runs for Concordia offensively in game one.  Blake Snow went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI’s for Doane. 

Game two was similar to game one, as Doane used a huge fourth inning to help pick up the win.  Doane took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Concordia quickly responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning.  Rodriguez tripled with one out in the inning, and Schmoll followed with a two-run blast to left center.  An RBI single by Brock Murphy gave Concordia a 3-1 advantage heading to the third inning.  Doane added a single run in the third on an RBI by Thomas Frinkman.

In the fourth, Doane used eight hits and one Concordia error to score 10 runs.  Austin Tharp had a two-run single and a run-scoring double in the inning.  AJ Spanel and Snow each added RBI singles.  Anthony Dunn smacked a two-run single, and Josh Reed delivered a three-run homer.

Concordia scored four runs in the fifth to pull within five at 12-7.  Matlock connected on a two-run homer, his second homer of the game, to highlight the inning for the Bulldogs.  Doane tacked on two more runs in the sixth for the final score of 14-7.      

Britton Scheele (4-2) earned the win on the mound for the Tigers.  He allowed seven runs on 11 hits with two walks and two strikeouts in six innings.  Steven Ivanoff (2-6) suffered the loss for the Bulldogs.  Ivanoff allowed 12 runs on 13 hits with one walk and one strikeout in 3.2 innings of work. 

Concordia hosts York College in a double-header on April 20.  First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Plum Creek Park.

York College, ranked No. 17 in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, swept Concordia in a baseball double-header on Tuesday evening in Seward.  Scores of the games were 13-0 and 7-1.  The visiting Panthers improved to 37-7 on the year with the wins.  Concordia dropped to 10-30 with the losses. 

Game one was a pitching dual early on between Alex Lowther of York and Brock Murphy of Concordia.  Murphy limited the Panthers to just one run in the first four innings, but that single run was all the run support needed by Lowther.  He improved to 6-1 on the season with the win and allowed just one hit with five walks and three strikeouts in six innings of work. 

York College added six runs in the fifth inning and poured it on with six more runs in the sixth to secure the lopsided win.  York’s Nick Nguyen was the offensive star of game one.  He went 3-for-4 with six RBI’s and a run scored for the Panthers.  Zach Goodrich had the lone hit of the game for Concordia. 

The Panther pitching staff was again too much for the Bulldogs in game two.  York jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first.  Concordia scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the first.  The Bulldogs used a hit, stolen base and two wild pitches to plate the run. 

York added three runs in the third and two more runs in the fourth, and that was more than enough run support for the Panther pitching staff.  Kyle Reeves, Chris Dempsey, Mike Becker, Justin Grieser and Keaton Holland all saw action on the mound for the Panthers in game two.  Concordia totaled just five hits in the game. 

Nick Caravelli went 3-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI’s to lead the way for York in their game two victory.  Goodrich went 1-for-3 and scored the only run of the game for the Bulldogs. 

Caleb Taylor (0-2) suffered the loss for Concordia.  He allowed seven runs on nine hits with two walks and one strikeout in 3.1 innings of work.  Jordan Stirtz, Dustin Matlock and Jacob Shaffer worked the rest of the game on the mound for the Bulldogs. 

Concordia hits the road for GPAC double-headers this weekend at Dordt and Morningside.  The Bulldogs take on Dordt on April 23 starting at 5 p.m.  The Bulldogs then travel to Sioux City to battle Morningside on April 24 at 1 p.m.

The Concordia University baseball team split with Morningside College on Saturday afternoon in Sioux City.  The host Mustangs took game one 7-2, and the Bulldogs took game two by the score of 7-5.  With the split, Morningside is 24-21 overall and 13-5 in conference play.  Concordia is 11-31 overall and 8-10 in the GPAC.  

The Concordia offense was shut down until the final inning of game one.  The Bulldogs finished with eight hits in the game, but four of those eight hits were in the seventh inning. 

Morningside pitcher Kyle Suder (4-2) was in control on the mound.  He allowed just two runs on eight hits with one walk and four strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work.  James Brouillette got the final out of the game for the Mustangs. 

Morningside took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Jared Noteboom.  The Mustangs plated four more runs in the third inning to take a 5-0 lead.  Bill Meacham’s two-run single highlighted the Mustang third inning.  Morningside took a 7-0 lead with two more runs in the fourth.  Travis Hanson had an RBI double, and Kelly Kotlik had a sacrifice fly in the inning for the Mustangs. 

Concordia finally got on the board in the seventh inning.  Brock Murphy had an RBI groundout, and Joe Becerra added an RBI single in the inning for the final score of 7-2. 

Jacob Yurich (2-5) took the loss in game one for the Bulldogs.  He allowed all seven runs on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work.  Jordan Stirtz worked the final 2.2 innings for Concordia.  Zach Goodrich went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Bulldogs. 

In game two, Morningside again took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.  Bret Hoch doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on an RBI single by Kotlik. 

Concordia rallied with four runs in the third to take a 4-1 lead.  Nate Schmoll and Mitch Nathan each had RBI singles, and Martin Rodriguez knocked in a run on a fielder’s choice in the Bulldog third inning.  

The Mustangs came back with two runs in the bottom of the third to trim the Bulldog advantage to one at 4-3.  Javier Alvarez delivered an RBI single, and Kotlik plated another run with a sacrifice fly. 

The Bulldogs added a single run in the fourth inning to increase the lead to two at 5-3.  Following two quick outs, Nate Comes connected on his first homer of the season for Concordia. 

Two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh gave Concordia a 7-3 cushion.  The two runs came with two outs in the inning.  Dustin Matlock came through with an RBI single, and the Bulldogs took advantage of a Morningside throwing error to score the other run in the inning. 

Morningside attempted to rally in the bottom of the seventh.  The Mustangs used a hit, walk and two Concordia errors to score two runs and cut the Bulldog lead to two at 7-5.  Morningside brought the tying run to the plate, but Concordia reliever Jacob Shaffer struck out Will Glienke to end the game. 

Mitch Nathan was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI to pace the Bulldog offense in game two.  Nate Comes was 2-for-2 with an RBI.  Brad Ramp improved to 4-4 on the year with the win on the mound.  He allowed five runs on nine hits with one walk and five strikeouts in 6.1 innings.  Shaffer picked up his second save of the season for Concordia. 

Steven Aschinger dropped to 3-7 with the loss on the mound for the Mustangs.  Kyle Smith went 2-for-3, and Kelly Kotlik drove in two runs for Morningside. 

Concordia travels to Dordt College on April 27.  The double-header begins at 4 p.m.

Concordia University and Dordt College split a GPAC double-header on Tuesday evening in Seward.  The Bulldogs took game one 5-1 behind a strong start by John Couch.  The Defenders rallied in the seventh inning for an 8-7 victory in game two.  Concordia is 12-32 overall and 9-11 in the GPAC.  Dordt College is 12-23 overall and 8-12 in the GPAC. 

Couch improved to 2-6 on the year with the win on the mound in game one.  He worked all seven innings and allowed just one run on six hits with no walks and two strikeouts.  Each team totaled six hits, and Dordt had the only error of game one. 

The Defenders grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning.  Morgan Halpert had an RBI single in the inning for Dordt.  Concordia tied the game at 1-1 in the third with an RBI single by Brock Murphy. 

The Bulldogs busted the game open with three runs in the fourth.  Dustin Matlock and James Dawson each had RBI singles, and Concordia capitalized on a Dordt College error to grab a 4-1 lead.  Concordia added another insurance run in the fifth.  With one out in the inning, Murphy blasted a solo homer to right field to increase the Bulldog lead to 5-1. 

Murphy went 2-for-4 with two RBI’s and a run scored for Concordia offensively.  Kyle Davis was 2-for-3 with a run scored for Dordt College.  Jensen Callaway (2-4) took the loss for the Defenders after allowing five runs on six hits with three walks and one strikeout in 4.1 innings of work. 

Concordia was in wonderful position to sweep the two games with a late lead in game two.  But the Defenders stole a win with a late rally in the bottom of the seventh.  Dordt committed six errors in the game but managed to overcome the mistakes. 

The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, using just two hits and three Defender errors to plate the runs.  Nate Schmoll and Kevin Poppe each delivered RBI singles to highlight the Bulldog first inning.  Concordia added single runs in the second and third.  Dawson had an RBI single for Concordia in the second, and a throwing error by Dordt gave the Bulldogs a 5-0 lead in the third. 

An RBI double by Tony Asta put Dordt on the board in the third and cut the Bulldog lead to four at 5-1.  The Defenders tied the game in the fourth.  Alex Brown had a two-run double, and Davis added a two-run triple in the inning for Dordt College. 

The Bulldogs came right back with two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 7-5 lead.  Dordt cut the lead to one at 7-6 with a single run in the bottom of the fifth. 

The score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh.  The Defenders rallied following two quick outs.  Zach Staudt started the rally with a single, and Halpert followed with a walk.  Ben Fife followed with a deep fly ball to right field.  The ball bounced off of Schmoll’s glove, and two runs scored to give the Defenders the win. 

Tony Asta (3-4) picked up the win in relief for Dordt College.  Staudt went 3-for-4 offensively, while Davis and Asta each added two hits apiece for the Defenders.  Jacob Shaffer (1-2) took the loss on the mound for Concordia.  Schmoll was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Bulldogs.

Concordia University picked up a pair of baseball wins over Midland Lutheran on Thursday evening in Fremont.  The Bulldogs took game one by the score of 6-4 in eight innings and game two by the score of 12-5.  With the wins, Concordia improved to 14-32 overall and 11-11 in conference games.  Midland dropped to 12-22 overall and 6-16 in conference play with the losses. 

The Bulldogs rallied for an exciting win in game one.  Midland scored two runs in the bottom of the first and a single run in the second to grab an early 3-0 lead.  The Warriors added another run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-0 advantage. 

Concordia got on the board in the top of the sixth.  Zach Goodrich and Brock Murphy each walked to open the inning.  A single by Nate Schmoll loaded the bases with nobody out.  Goodrich scored on a Midland error to cut the Warrior lead to three at 4-1. 

The Bulldogs used a huge seventh inning to tie the game at 4-4.  Raymond Cooper started the rally with an RBI single.  Goodrich added a sacrifice fly, and an RBI single by Schmoll tied the game at 4-4. 

Jacob Shaffer came on in relief and shut the Midland offense down in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.  In the top of the eighth, Kevin Poppe and Dustin Matlock walked to get things started for the Bulldogs.  Joe Becerra followed with a single to load the bases.  With two outs in the inning, Goodrich delivered a clutch two-run double to give Concordia a 6-4 lead.  The Warriors couldn’t rally in the bottom of the inning, and the Bulldogs held on for the dramatic win. 

Midland finished with 11 hits in game one compared to seven for the Bulldogs.  However, the Warriors committed two costly errors in the game.  Shaffer picked up the win in relief for Concordia to improve to 2-2 on the year.  He allowed two hits with two strikeouts in two innings of work.  Jacob Yurich started the game and worked the first six innings for the Bulldogs.  He allowed four runs on nine hits with one walk and five strikeouts. 

Schmoll was 3-for-5 offensively with one batted in, while Goodrich went 1-for-3 with three RBI’s and the game-winning double for the Bulldogs.  Dustin Brown was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for Midland Lutheran. 

Concordia used a pair of big innings to pull away for the 12-5 win in game two.  The host Warriors grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning.  Concordia responded with four runs in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead.  James Dawson scored on a Midland error, and Schmoll blasted a three-run homer in Concordia’s half of the third. 

The Warriors pulled within one at 4-3 with a single run in the bottom of the third.  Concordia again had an answer with six runs in the top of the fourth.  Matlock led off the inning with a solo blast to give the Bulldogs a 5-3 lead.  Schmoll added a two-run double, and Mitch Nathan’s two-run single gave Concordia a 10-3 cushion. 

The Bulldogs added a single run in the fifth on another Midland error.  Midland scored once in the fifth to make the score 11-4 in favor of Concordia.  The Bulldogs scored again in the sixth.  Schmoll continued his big night with an RBI single.  Midland scored a single run in the seventh for the final score of 12-5. 

Concordia had nine hits in game two compared to six for Midland.  Each team committed two errors.  Brad Ramp (5-4) allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits with five walks in 4.1 innings of work to pick up the win on the mound for Concordia.  Matt Trejo (1-8) suffered the loss for Midland after allowing eight runs (four earned) on four hits with two walks and one strikeout in 3.2 innings. 

Schmoll was the offensive star of game two.  He went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and six RBI’s.  Schmoll was 6-for-9 with two runs scored and seven RBI’s in the double-header.  Ty Shaw added a pair of hits and two runs scored, while Goodrich scored three runs for Concordia.  Nate Ward went 2-for-4 with two RBI’s for the Warriors. 

Concordia concludes the regular season with a home GPAC double-header against Hastings College on Saturday.  First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Senior Day at Plum Creek Park.   

Hastings spoils senior day with 10-6 and 6-3 wins over Concordia

Hastings College won both games over Concordia University in GPAC baseball on Saturday in Seward.  Scores of the games were 10-6 and 6-3.  The visiting Broncos improved to 17-29 overall and 12-12 in the GPAC with the wins.  The Bulldogs slipped to 14-34 overall and 11-13 in conference play with the losses. 

In game one, Hastings jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning.  Mack Land hit a solo homer to give the Broncos the advantage.  Hastings tacked on two more runs in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead.  Following two quick outs, Land walked and scored on a two-run blast by Blake Marquardt. 

The Broncos took a 9-0 lead with six runs in the fifth inning.  Geoff Hobbs’ two-run double and John Rivera’s two-run homer highlighted the huge inning for Hastings.  The Broncos added another run in the sixth inning on an RBI double by A.J. Clark. 

Concordia put six runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning for the final score of 10-6.  Zach Goodrich led off the inning with a solo homer.  Mitch Nathan added an RBI sacrifice fly.  Joe Becerra drove in a run on a fielder’s choice.  Raymond Cooper delivered a pinch hit, two-run homer.  Ty Shaw added a solo homer in the inning for the Bulldogs. 

Hastings finished game one with 11 hits compared to eight for Concordia.  Jeff Burks (4-5) picked up the win for the Broncos after allowing five runs on seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work.  Steven Ivanoff (2-7) allowed seven runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work to take the loss for the Bulldogs.  Brock Murphy and Nate Schmoll each went 2-for-4 to lead the way for the Bulldogs offensively. 

Concordia took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of game two.  Goodrich doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on an RBI double by Schmoll.  Hastings quickly tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second on Rivera’s second homer of the day. 

The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead at 2-1 in the bottom of the third.  Schmoll singled and scored on an RBI double by Dustin Matlock.  The Broncos responded with two in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.  A.J. Clark delivered a two-run single for Hastings. 

Concordia tied the game once again at 3-3 with a single run in the bottom of the fifth.  Murphy tripled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Nathan. 

The Broncos took the lead for good with a run in the sixth.  A fielder’s choice by Dan Nealon scored the run for Hastings, and the Broncos tacked on two more runs in the seventh for the final of 6-3. 

A.J. Clark (5-3) picked up the win for Hastings on the mound.  He worked all seven innings and allowed the three runs on eight hits with one walk and six strikeouts.  Brock Murphy suffered the loss in relief for the Bulldogs and is 1-5 on the year.  John Couch started game two for Concordia and allowed three runs on six hits with four strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.  Goodrich and Schmoll had two hits apiece for Concordia offensively.   

Bulldogs open GPAC Tournament against Mount Marty on Thursday

The Concordia University baseball team is the No. 8 seed in the 2010 GPAC Baseball Tournament.  The Bulldogs open play on May 6 against No. 1 Mount Marty at 10 a.m.  The GPAC Championship will be hosted by Dakota Wesleyan, and the tournament will be played according to the NAIA-Baseball Coaches Association eight-team double-elimination bracket.

Season ends for Bulldogs with two losses at GPAC Tournament

The season came to an end for the Concordia University baseball team on Thursday at the GPAC Tournament.  The Bulldogs dropped games to Mount Marty College and Doane College to finish the season at 14-36 overall. 

Mount Marty picked up a 5-2 win over Concordia in the first game of the tournament.  The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the second inning.  Martin Rodriguez had an RBI single, and a bases loaded walk to Nate Schmoll gave Concordia the early advantage. 

Mount Marty got on the board with a single run in the fourth inning.  The Lancers took the lead for good with three runs in the sixth inning and added another insurance run in the seventh for the final score of 5-2. 

Both teams struggled offensively.  The Lancers had just five hits, while the Bulldogs managed just three hits in the game.  Mount Marty’s Josh Damewood worked all seven innings and picked up the win on the mound.  He allowed the two runs and three hits with four walks and seven strikeouts.  Brad Ramp (5-5) took the loss for the Bulldogs after allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. 

Doane College cruised to a 14-4 win on Thursday evening.  The Tigers plated two runs in the second, four runs in the third, seven runs in the fourth and a single run in the fifth to pick up the easy win.  Doane finished with 13 hits in the game.  Concordia had just eight with three errors defensively. 

Zach Goodrich, Brock Murphy and Schmoll all had two hits for the Bulldogs offensively.  John Couch suffered the loss on the mound after allowing six runs (four earned) on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work.  Josh Reed and Austin Tharp each drove in three runs for Doane, while Ryan Otto earned the win on the mound for the Tigers.

Five Bulldogs earn GPAC honors

Concordia University had five players receive conference baseball honors for their efforts in the 2010 season.  Outfielders Nate Schmoll and Zak Goodrich along with pitcher Jacob Shaffer were all Second Team All-Conference selections.  Dustin Matlock and Brad Ramp were honorable mention All-Conference selections. 

Schmoll had a solid senior season for the Bulldogs.  The senior from Georgia led the team with a .380 average (62-of-163) and 40 RBI’s.  He was second on the team in hits, runs scored (34), doubles (11) and homers (6).  Schmoll was third on the team with 10 stolen bases.  He started 48 of Concordia’s 50 games this season. 

Goodrich was the only Bulldog player to play and start all 50 games in 2010.  The sophomore from Florida was second on the team with a .375 average (63-of-168).  He led the team in hits, runs scored (48), doubles (17), triples (3) and stolen bases (19).  Goodrich also added one homer and was tied for third on the team with 21 RBI’s. 

Shaffer, a senior from Texas, was 2-2 with an impressive 1.59 ERA this season for the Bulldogs.  He appeared in 21 games and had two saves.  Shaffer worked 22 innings on the year and finished with 24 strikeouts.  Batters hit just .220 against him. 

Matlock hit .292 (31-of-106) with a team-high nine homers.  He finished with 21 runs scored and was second on the team with 28 RBI’s.  Matlock’s .594 slugging percentage was tops on the team, and he added two stolen bases. 

Ramp won a team-high five games in his senior season.  He finished with a 5-5 record and a 4.25 ERA in 12 appearances for the Bulldogs.  He was tied for the team lead with 11 starts, and he tossed two complete games this season.  Ramp totaled 54.1 innings of work and allowed 56 runs (just 33 earned) on 67 hits with 28 walks and 36 strikeouts. 

Concordia finished the year with a 14-36 overall record.  The Bulldogs were the No. 8 seed in the GPAC Tournament after posting an 11-13 record in conference play.  

May named as 2010 NAIA scholar-athlete

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics announced Wednesday that 196 baseball players have been named 2010 Daktronics-NAIA Baseball Scholar-Athletes.  Micah May earned scholar-athlete honors for the Concordia University baseball team.   

Nominated by each institution's head coach, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and have achieved junior academic status to qualify.  May, a junior from Colorado Springs, appeared in 11 games on the mound for the Bulldogs this season. 

Concordia finished the 2010 season at 14-36 overall with an 11-13 mark in GPAC play. 

Schmoll named to OWH All-Nebraska Team

Five Concordia University baseball players were recognized by the Omaha World Herald for their efforts in the 2010 season.  Nate Schmoll was named to the OWH All-Nebraska NAIA team, while Zak Goodrich, Jacob Shaffer, Dustin Matlock and Brad Ramp were honorable mention selections.
