Bulldogs set to open season this Friday

7 FEB 2011

The Concordia University baseball team is scheduled to open up the 2011 season on February 11.  The Bulldogs were 14-36 overall and 11-13 in conference play a year ago.  Concordia also made it to the GPAC Tournament in 2010.  The Bulldogs were picked to finish 11th in the 2011 GPAC preseason coaches’ poll.

Concordia must find a way to replace a trio of All-Conference selections from a year ago.  Nate Schmoll and Jacob Shaffer were Second Team All-GPAC selections, while Brad Ramp was an honorable mention All-GPAC selection in 2010 for the Bulldogs.  Schmoll was one of the top offensive performers, while both Shaffer and Ramp were leaders on the mound in 2010 for Concordia.

The Bulldogs will look to junior Zak Goodrich (Lutz, Fla.) and senior Dustin Matlock (Colorado Springs, Colo.) for leadership.  Goodrich was a Second Team All-GPAC performer in 2010 after starting all 50 games for the Bulldogs.  He hit .375 and led the team in hits, runs scored, doubles, triples and stolen bases.

Matlock had a team-high nine homers in 2010 and was second on the team with 28 RBI’s.  His .594 slugging percentage was tops on the team last season.

Concordia will hope for improved pitching and defense in the 2011 season.  Last year, the Bulldog pitching staff finished with a 5.74 team ERA.  The Bulldog defense also totaled 109 errors last year which added pressure to the pitching staff.

Josh Anderson (Westminster, Colo.), who appeared in a team-best 22 games last year, returns in his junior season for the Bulldogs.  Jacob Yurich (Aurora, Colo.) and Steven Ivanoff (Tucson, Ariz.) also return for the Bulldogs this season.  The duo combined to start 19 games for Concordia last year.  Ivanoff tossed three complete games and totaled a team-best 39 strikeouts on the season.

Concordia opens the season at Mid America Nazarene University in Kansas on February 11 and 12.  The Bulldogs will travel to Florida for their spring break trip this year, and the home opener is scheduled for March 20 against Peru State College.

Concordia University jumped out to an early lead and picked up a 7-3 baseball win over Ave Maria University today in Florida.  The Bulldogs improved to 5-7 on the season with the win, while the Gyrenes dropped to 9-16 with the loss.

The Bulldogs used two hits and several Ave Maria miscues to take the lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Zak Goodrich (Lutz, Fla.) opened the inning with a double.  T.J. Conway (Crete, Neb.) walked, and Ty Shaw (Montrose, Colo.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Brandon Pflug (Ft. Morgan, Colo.) followed with a 2-run single to score Goodrich and Conway.  An error by Ave Maria allowed two more runs to cross the plate later in the inning, and Concordia took an early 4-0 advantage.

Concordia added a single run in the third inning.  Shaw led off the inning with a walk, and a double by Dustin Matlock (Colorado Springs, Colo.) put runners at second and third with one out.  Following a walk to Ray Finley (Tucson, Ariz.) that loaded the bases, Tate Bedwell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) drew the third walk of the inning to drive home Shaw and increase the Bulldog lead to 5-0.

The Bulldogs tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning, and all of the damage was done with two outs in the inning.  Conway singled and stole second.  Shaw walked, and Conway advanced to third base on a wild pitch.  Pflug followed with a 2-run double down the left field line to give Concordia a 7-0 lead heading into the fifth inning.

11 MAR 2011

Concordia University 5, Roosevelt University 1 (view stats)

Concordia University used one big offensive inning and a solid pitching performance by Jacob Yurich to pick up a 5-1 win over Roosevelt University on Friday morning.  Concordia won its second straight to improve to 6-7 on the year.  Roosevelt dropped to 3-3 with the loss.

The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning.  Ernesto Irizarry delivered an RBI single to put the Lakers on top 1-0.

Morgan, Colo.) and Ray Finley (Tucson, Ariz.) each had RBI singles, while the other two runs scored via a pair of wild pitches in the inning.

The Concordia offense totaled nine hits in the win.  Finley was 3-for-4 with two RBI’s, and Pflug was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the way for the Bulldogs.

Doane quickly reclaimed the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth.  Mike Albert led off the inning with a homer.  Following back-to-back singles, Austin Tharp put the Tigers on top with an RBI bunt single.

In the bottom of the sixth, Doane scored three runs to take a 6-2 lead.  With two outs in the inning, Hincy connected on a 3-run blast to left center.  Hincy’s homer proved to be the game-winning hit, as Concordia made things interesting in the seventh.  Joe Brandenburg (Waconia, Minn.) and Shaw walked to lead off the inning.  A fly out by Goodrich advanced Brandenburg to third, and a walk to Conway loaded the bases with one out.  Finley struck out, but Brandon Pflug (Ft. Morgan, Colo.) came through with a 2-run single to pull the Bulldogs within two.  However, a groundout by Matlock secured the 6-4 win for Doane.

Tim Carlson (3-1) allowed just two runs on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts in five innings of work for the Tigers.  Mitch VandenBerge picked up his seventh save of the season for Doane.

Jordan Stirtz (Gretna, Neb.) dropped to 1-4 on the year with the loss for the Bulldogs.  He allowed the six runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts in six innings of work.  Goodrich and Rodriguez each had two hits to lead the way for Concordia offensively.

The Bulldogs host Sioux Falls on Saturday.  First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Plum Creek Park.

Concordia University and the University of Sioux Falls split a pair of GPAC baseball games on Saturday in Seward.  Sioux Falls scored in the bottom of the eighth inning to win game one by the score of 4-3.  Concordia took game two by the score of 4-1.  The win in game two snapped Concordia’s 3-game losing streak and moved the Bulldogs to 17-24 overall and 7-11 in conference play.  Sioux Falls is now 18-14 overall and 9-7 in conference play.

Concordia had a great opportunity to win game one, but the Cougars rallied late for the win.  The Bulldogs grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third.  Nate Comes (Grimes, Iowa) singled to lead off the inning, and a Sioux Falls error advanced him to second.  Following a sacrifice bunt by Tate Bedwell (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Kyle Ivanoff (Tucson, Ariz.) delivered an RBI groundout to put the Bulldogs on top.

Sioux Falls tied the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Cody Burgener.  Concordia answered quickly, however, and scored two runs on three hits in the top of the fourth.  T.J. Conway (Crete, Neb.) led off the inning with a single, and a double by Ray Finley (Tucson, Ariz.) put runners at second and third with nobody out.  Brandon Pflug (Ft. Morgan, Colo.) followed with an RBI single and an RBI groundout by Joe Brandenburg (Waconia, Minn.) gave the Bulldogs a 3-1 advantage.

The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the sixth.  Corey Vasquez singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Jimmy Maxwell followed with an RBI single.  Ryan Fobes pinch ran for Maxwell and promptly stole second and third.  Cody Minich then delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Fobes and tie the game at 3-3.

Concordia couldn’t get anything going in the seventh or eighth innings.  Sioux Falls scored the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth.  Burgener singled and stole second base.  Maxwell was intentionally walked, and Minich followed with a game-winning RBI single.

USF totaled eight hits in game one compared to just four for Concordia.  Brady Nolz (5-1) picked up the win on the mound.  Nolz went the distance, allowing the three runs (two earned) on four hits with six strikeouts.  Burgener had three hits for USF offensively.

Eric Gramenz (Steeleville, Ill.) took the loss on the mound and dropped to 2-3 on the year.  Gramenz also went the distance and allowed the four runs on eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts.  Pflug had a hit and a run batted in for the Bulldogs.

In game two, Concordia took advantage of early USF errors to jump out to a lead.  The Bulldogs scored three runs on two hits and three Cougar errors in the top of the first inning.  All three runs were unearned.  Pflug started the scoring with an RBI single, and Mitch Nathan (Golden, Colo.) drove in two with a single for the 3-0 Concordia lead.

The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the top of the fifth.  Zak Goodrich (Lutz, Fla.) connected on a solo homer to right field to lead off the inning.  USF made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh.  The Cougars scored a run on an RBI single by Dylan Dwyer.  USF managed to load the bases, but Bulldog reliever Paul Rowlett (Lodgepole, Neb.) got Minich to ground out to end the game.

Nick Thill (Littleton, Colo.) picked up the win on the mound for Concordia and improved to 2-1 on the year.  Thill allowed just two hits and no runs in four innings of work.  Rowlett picked up his first save of the season.  Goodrich had two hits with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the way for Concordia offensively in the win.

Noah Coleman dropped to 4-5 with the loss on the mound for USF.  Coleman allowed four runs (just one earned) on five hits with six strikeouts in five innings of work.  Kevin Santos had two hits for the USF offense.

Morgan, Colo.) and Ivanoff had two hits apiece.

In game two, Concordia pulled away in the final two innings for the 9-4 win.  The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, using three hits and a Hastings College error to take the early advantage.  Hastings also scored a pair of runs in the first, however, and the game was quickly tied at 2-2.

The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead with two runs in the third.  Mitch Nathan (Golden, Colo.) had the big hit in the inning with a 2-run single.  The Broncos again had an answer with two runs in the fourth.  Zach Nelson knocked in both runs with a single.

Concordia took control of game two with four runs in the sixth.  The Bulldogs totaled seven hits in the inning, and all of the runs were scored with two outs.  Joe Brandenburg (Waconia, Minn.) delivered a pinch hit 3-run homer to start the scoring, and an RBI single by Anthony Flores (Craig, Colo.) put Concordia on top by the score of 8-4.  The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the seventh following two Hastings College errors.  The Broncos had five errors in the game.

Offensively, Concordia pounded 12 hits in game two.  Finley went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Zak Goodrich (Lutz, Fla.) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI to pace the Bulldog offense.  Jordan Stirtz (Gretna, Neb.) worked the first five innings on the mound for Concordia, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.  Josh Anderson (Westminster, Colo.) and Nick Thill (Littleton, Colo.) each worked scoreless innings for the Bulldogs in relief.
