SEWARD, Neb. – Start the countdown now. The 2020 Concordia University varsity football season is slated to kick off in Mayville, N.D., on Saturday, Sept. 5. Head coach Patrick Daberkow’s program has announced a 10-game slate for this coming fall. For the third-straight season, the Bulldogs will play nine GPAC games and one nonconference contest with the regular season wrapping up on Nov. 14.
Daberkow’s program is coming off a 2019 campaign that saw it go 3-7 overall while being led by a solid defensive unit. The group of linebackers, featuring senior starters Riley Bilstein, Derek Tachovsky and Zac Walter and junior Lane Napier, were the backbone of the team. On the offensive side of the ball, Concordia appears well-stocked at the receiver position and will be more experienced up front this fall. Football programs around the country will attempt to make offseason progress while in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.
For the first time ever, Concordia and Mayville State University will meet on the gridiron when action gets underway on Sept. 5. The Comets are a member of the North Star Athletic Association. The remainder of the regular season will put the Bulldogs up against GPAC opponents exclusively. Among the highlights, Concordia will have its home opener under the lights (6 p.m. CT) versus Hastings on Sept. 19, host Jamestown for homecoming on Oct. 3 and welcome defending national champion Morningside for senior day on Nov. 7. The regular season will conclude at Midland on Nov. 14.
This will mark the second year in a row that the Bulldogs will have a home opener at night. Meanwhile, some other streaks will come to an end in 2020. For instance, Concordia had played at Dordt in each of the previous five years and hosted Midland four-straight seasons and Dakota Wesleyan three-straight years.
