YANKTON, S.D. – A fine collegiate debut performance by freshman Justin Webert has helped Concordia University Men’s Golf to a seven-stroke lead at the conclusion of day one at the Mount Marty Invite on Monday (Aug. 30). The Bulldogs shot a team score of 304 in the tournament’s first round while opening the 2021-22 season at Hillcrest Golf Country Club in Yankton, S.D. The event features competitors from six institutions and covers 36 holes at two locations.
Head Coach Brett Muller traveled 10 golfers to the Mount Marty Invite. Five individuals carded scores in the 70s. Concordia is joined at the tournament by Central Community College, Dakota Wesleyan, Dordt, Mount Marty and Northeast Community College.
With his one-over-par 73 on Monday, Webert holds a one-stroke lead over Freddy Bullock for first place out of 44 golfers. A Lincoln Southwest High School alum, Webert was followed by teammates Nate Auffet (75), Drew D’Ercole (76), Ivan Yabut (76) and Jake Hagerbaumer (79) as the top Dawgs in round one. Another five Bulldogs carded scores in the 80s: Gavin McWhorter (81), Jack Williams (81), Landon Walkenhorst (82), Jacob Woodmancy (84) and Josh D’Ercole (87).
The headlining returner for Concordia is Drew D’Ercole, named an Honorable Mention All-GPAC selection last season. The newcomers to the lineup on Monday included Webert, Hagerbaumer and Josh D’Ercole, the younger brother of Drew. Last season the Bulldogs placed ninth in the GPAC.
Round two of the Mount Marty Invite will begin with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. CT on Tuesday. Play will shift to Fox Run Golf Course in Yankton. In the current team standings, Northeast CC (311) and Dordt (312) are next in line behind Concordia.
