27 AUG 2009

Concordia University 3, York College 1 (view stats)

The Concordia University men’s soccer team defeated York College by the score of 3-1 on Thursday evening in York.  The Panthers took an early 1-0 lead, but the Bulldogs rallied for the win.

The Panthers scored on the first shot of the game. Concordia junior midfielder George Lara responded with a goal off an assist by Kolt O’Kelly to tie the game at 1-1 heading into halftime.

The second half was dominated by Concordia.  A.J. Jorgensen and Evan Gahan each scored, and the Bulldogs controlled the game and the time of possession battle down the stretch.  Concordia head coach Jason Weides was happy with the way his team responded after the early deficit.

“We really out-possessed York tonight,” said Weides.  “They had the one pretty good scoring chance early, and they took advantage of it.  I really thought we missed some opportunities to extend the lead in the second half, but overall we really improved our play.”

Bulldogs fall in double overtime

Concordia University 0, William Penn 1 (view stats)

Nik Rule scored in the second overtime as William Penn snuck past Concordia 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in Seward.  The Statesmen moved to 1-0 on the season with the win, and Concordia dropped to 1-1 with the loss.

Both teams had quality offensive opportunities at different points of the game, but strong defense and solid goaltending by Tadeo Cavazos of William Penn and Chris Podlich of Concordia kept the game scoreless.  In the second overtime, a downfield pass caught Podlich and the Concordia defenders out of position, and Rule scored the game-winner for the Statesmen.

Concordia head coach Jason Weides commented on the disappointment of the loss.  “I can’t fault the effort of our guys,” said Weides.  “We just didn’t do the simple things very well today.  That put a lot of pressure on our defense, and we came up short.”

William Penn held a 14-12 advantage in shots in the game.  The Statesmen had nine shots on goal compared to five for the Bulldogs.  WPU also had seven corner kicks compared to just three for Concordia.

Benedictine defeats Concordia 2-0

Benedictine College defeated Concordia by the score of 2-0 on Sunday evening in Seward.  The Ravens moved to 1-0 on the year with the win, and Concordia dropped its second straight game to fall to 1-2 on the season.

The Bulldogs struggled to find any offensive rhythm for the second straight game.  The Ravens held a commanding 14-4 shot advantage in the contest.  Sean Lewis scored the opening goal of the game for Benedictine off an assist by Brendan Whatley, and Kyle Greig scored the other goal for the Ravens.

Kolt O’Kelly had two shots, and Matt Brink and Kraig Hein added a shot each for the Bulldogs.  Chris Podlich (1-2) made five saves for Concordia, and Tanner Fox earned the shutout in goal for the Ravens.

Concordia travels to Sterling College on Tuesday and then returns home to host McPherson College on Sept. 5 in a 7 p.m. contest at Bulldog Stadium.

Concordia defeated Sterling College by the score of 1-0 on Tuesday evening.  The Bulldogs improved to 2-2 on the year with the victory.

The Bulldogs scored in the 24th minute.  An errant Sterling College pass resulted in an “own goal” and gave Concordia the 1-0 lead.  The Bulldogs used solid defense to hold on for the 1-0 win.  George Lara had a game-high three shots for Concordia in the win.  Nate Friesner and Raul Lopez each had two shots.  Kolt O’Kelly and Jacob Lias each added shots on goal.  Chris Podlich (2-2) made three saves and earned his first shutout of the year in goal for the Bulldogs.

Head coach Jason Weides talked about the win.  "We obviously caught a break with the goal that was scored," said Weides.  "I thought we played well enough to score some more goals, and we just didn't finish some chances.  We were solid defensively, and that allowed us to pick up the win."

Concordia will host McPherson College on Sept. 5 in a 7 p.m. contest at Bulldog Stadium.

Concordia opens conference play on the road at Dana College on Sept. 16.  Coach Weides hopes the demanding schedule so far will benefit his team as conference season approaches.  “We’ve played some really difficult teams here early on,” said Weides.  “We certainly hope that it helps us down the road as we prepare for the GPAC schedule.”

Concordia University 1, Dana College 2 (view stats)

Dana controlled play in the first half and eventually scored about midway through the period to take a 1-0 lead.  Thor Brown scored the opening goal for the Vikings.  Concordia head coach Jason Weides commented on the early momentum for Dana College.  “We continued to surrender possession very cheaply, and that put us in a defensive posture early on,” said Weides.  “They controlled the first half, and we were lucky to only be down one goal at halftime.”

Concordia tied the game at 1-1 in the 66th minute when Kolt O’Kelly beat three defenders and found Ian Euler for the equalizing goal.  The Bulldogs had several good opportunities to win the game toward the end of the second half, but the game went to overtime tied at 1-1.

The overtime period went back and forth, but Dana’s Taylor Martin scored the game-winning goal with one minute remaining in the first overtime period.  Coach Weides was pleased with the response of his team in the second half.  “After a few changes and a productive talk at halftime, we can out and played extremely well,” commented Weides.  “We felt like we played our best 45 minutes of the entire year in the second half.”

Concordia will host Morningside on Saturday afternoon.  The game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.

Concordia controlled play during the opening minutes of the game.  The Bulldogs had a great opportunity to take an early lead but had a shot go off the post.  In the 12th minute, Dordt’s Tom Stepanek scored on a free kick to give the Defenders a 1-0 lead.  Concordia goalie Chris Podlich misjudged the shot, and it got over his head to give Dordt the lead.  Concordia head coach Jason Weides commented on the early change of momentum.  “The first goal by them really deflated us,” said Weides.  “We felt like we dominated the game early on and that free kick was really the first good attempt that they had.”

In the 18th minute, some sloppy Concordia defense led to a goal by Dordt’s Devin Williams.  Williams managed to dribble through the Bulldog defense to give the Defenders the 2-0 lead.  Concordia cut into the lead with a goal by Kolt O’Kelly in the 54th minute.  Raul Lopez got the assist for the Bulldogs.  Concordia had some chances to tie the game down the stretch, but Dordt held on for the 2-1 win.

“We let their goals get to us, and our spirits were broken late in the first half,” commented Weides.  “We asked a lot of the guys at halftime, and we came out and played a lot better in the second half.  We just couldn’t get that equalizer.”

The Bulldogs will host Mount Marty College on Oct. 3.  The game is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium in Seward.

Lara and May earn conference honors

Two players from Concordia University were named to the 2009 Great Plains Athletic Conference men’s soccer All-Conference Team announced Tuesday.  George Lara and Todd May each received honorable mention honors.

Lara, a junior midfielder from El Paso, Texas (Andress HS), led the Bulldogs in scoring this season with five goals and one assist for 11 points.  Lara also had a team-high two game-winning goals for Concordia this season.

“George is a skilled attacking player that is very dangerous moving forward,” said Jason Weides, head coach of the Bulldogs.  “He led our team in total goals and points after spending the majority of the season as a midfielder.  He possesses good field vision, and that enables him to be a creative passer.  George is also dynamic and fluid with the ball, which always keeps defenders off balance.”

May, a midfielder from Brighton, England, scored one goal and added two assists in his first season for the Bulldogs.  He was also second on the team with 12 shots on goal.

“Todd made an immediate impact for us this year from the center midfield role,” commented Weides.  “He was instrumental in our attacking buildup play, which allowed our team to possess the ball for extended periods of the game.  As the season progressed, Todd also played a vital role on the defensive side of the ball.”

Concordia finished the 2009 season with a record of 4-13-1 overall and 2-9-1 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.

Concordia places six on 2009 men's soccer scholar-athletes list

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced that a total of 256 men’s soccer student-athletes have been named 2009 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes.  Six Concordia University men’s soccer players were named to this year’s list.

Nominated by each institution’s head coach, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and have achieved junior academic status to qualify.  Joel Neihardt, Evan Gahan, Kyle Neumann, Kraig Hein, Jacob Lias and Dan Geu were all named to the 2009 list.

“We are very proud of our many academic accomplishments here at Concordia University,” said Jason Weides, head coach of the Bulldogs.  “Once again, we have several men’s soccer players who have excelled in the classroom.  These seniors and juniors have greatly impacted our program over their collegiate careers.  Their academic efforts set the standard for our younger players to follow.  Hopefully their contributions will help Concordia lead the GPAC and NAIA in scholar-athletes for the second consecutive year.”
