Bulldogs open season with tie at William Penn

Concordia University and William Penn University played to a 0-0 men’s soccer tie on Friday evening. It was the opening game of the year for both squads.
William Penn held an 18-12 advantage in shots and an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks in the contest. Kolt O’Kelly totaled four shots with two shots on goal for Concordia. Nathan Douglas and Ian Euler added two shots apiece for the Bulldogs. Tyler Mather had four shots with two shots on goal for William Penn.
Concordia’s Chris Podlich made seven saves on the evening, while Tadeo Cavazos made five saves in goal for William Penn.
Concordia travels to Iowa Wesleyan for a 1 p.m. contest on Saturday.
Late goal lifts Iowa Wesleyan past Concordia

Iowa Wesleyan scored in the 88th minute to secure a 1-0 men’s soccer win over Concordia on Saturday afternoon. Iowa Wesleyan moved to 1-0 on the year with the victory, while Concordia slipped to 0-1-1 on the young season with the loss.
Wesleyan held an 18-6 shot advantage in the contest. Albert Michael scored off an assist by Levor Henry to give Iowa Wesleyan the win. Chris Matthews had seven total shots with four shots on goal, and Idris Labaran made four saves for the host Tigers.
Kolt O’Kelly had three total shots with two shots on goal for the Bulldogs. Concordia is still searching for its first goal of the season. Chris Podlich made eight saves for the Bulldogs in a losing effort.
Concordia travels to Kansas on September 1 for an 8 p.m. contest against McPherson College.
Concordia ties with McPherson College, 1-1

Concordia University played to a 1-1 men’s soccer tie at McPherson College on Wednesday evening. The Bulldogs moved to 0-1-2 on the year. McPherson College is 0-0-1 to start the season.
The game remained scoreless into the second half of play. Nathan Douglas scored the first goal of the season for Concordia to put the Bulldogs on top with just over 30 minutes remaining in the game. Tim Soenksen picked up the assist.
McPherson College tied the game at 1-1 with 13 minutes remaining in the second half. Brent Mulford scored off an assist by Sam Tucker. Neither team was able to find the net in the overtime periods.
McPherson College held a 19-9 shot advantage over Concordia. McPherson had seven shots on goal compared to just one for Concordia. It was a wild contest with 35 total fouls, three yellow cards and one red card. Chris Podlich made six saves in goal for Concordia on the evening.
Concordia hosts Kansas Wesleyan on September 5. Scheduled start time is 5 pm at Bulldog Stadium.
Kansas Wesleyan runs past Concordia, 4-0

Kansas Wesleyan cruised past Concordia by the score of 4-0 in men’s soccer on Sunday evening in Seward. The Coyotes scored a goal late in the first half and poured it on in the second half to pull away for the easy win. KWU improved to 2-0 on the year with the win. Concordia is still winless on the season at 0-2-2.
With just four seconds remaining in the first half, KWU’s Trenton Corea scored off an assist by Miguel Madrigal to put the visiting Coyotes on top 1-0. Kansas Wesleyan held a 12-5 advantage in shots during the first half and finished the game with a 20-7 advantage in shots.
Alex Chavez scored on a penalty kick early in the second half to put Kansas Wesleyan in front 2-0. Chavez scored again just two minutes later to increase the lead to 3-0. Jorge Oseguera was credited with the assist on KWU’s third goal of the game. David Hernandez connected on the final goal of the game for the Coyotes.
Nick Esser had a team-high two shots for Concordia in the loss. Goalie Chris Podlich made 11 saves in the game. Kansas Wesleyan goalie Diego Millan made four saves to pick up the win for the Coyotes.
Concordia hosts Bethany College on September 11 in an 8 pm contest at Bulldog Stadium.
Bulldogs pick up first win of season, 4-1 over Bethany College

The Concordia University men’s soccer team earned a 4-1 win over Bethany College on Saturday evening in Seward. The Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season to improve to 1-2-2 on the year.
Bethany College struck first in the first half with a goal by Gildardo Navarro. An own goal tied the game at 1-1, and the Bulldogs claimed a 2-1 lead late in the first half on a goal by Kolt O’Kelly. Ian Euler had the assist on Concordia’s second goal.
With just over 30 minutes remaining in the game, Tim Soenksen scored off an assist by Kurt O’Kelly to increase the Bulldog lead to 3-1. Less than two minutes later, Concordia’s Todd May scored on a penalty kick to build the lead to three at 4-1.
The Bulldogs host Northwestern College on September 18 to open GPAC play.
Soenksen's game-winner gives Bulldogs 2-1 win over Northwestern College

Concordia’s Tim Soenksen scored a goal in overtime to lift the Bulldog men’s soccer team to a 2-1 overtime win over Northwestern College on Saturday afternoon in Seward. The Bulldogs improved to 2-2-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play with the win. Northwestern College fell to 2-5-1 overall and 0-2 in the GPAC with the loss.
The Bulldogs jumped on top with a goal by Nathan Douglas in the 27th minute. Concordia held the 1-0 lead at halftime, but Northwestern tied the game at 1-1 early in the second half on an own goal. Neither team managed to find the net down the stretch in regulation.
Following a Northwestern turnover early in the overtime period, Soenksen drilled a shot from distance past a diving Jeff Lanser for the game-winning goal. “Players were getting tired, and we were pretty well spent at the end of regulation,” remarked Soenksen. “Everyone continued to work hard, and I just wanted to do my part down the stretch.”
Northwestern held a 16-12 advantage in shots. Lanser made four saves for the Raiders, while Concordia’s Chris Podlich made 10 saves to earn the win for the Bulldogs.
“We worked really hard in preseason for this,” added Soenksen. “This is great for team spirit and morale to get the conference season started with a win.”
Concordia travels to Briar Cliff on September 21.
Bulldogs edge Briar Cliff 1-0 for third straight win

Concordia University picked up a 1-0 non-conference men’s soccer win over Briar Cliff on Tuesday evening in Sioux City. Raul Lopez scored the game-winner late in the second half to secure the third straight victory for Concordia. The Bulldogs are 3-2-2 overall on the season, while Briar Cliff dropped to 2-4 with the loss.
The Chargers held the advantage in both shots and corner kicks. Briar Cliff totaled 17 shots in the game compared to just nine for the Bulldogs. BCU also had 12 corner kicks to just three for Concordia. However, Chris Podlich made 12 saves in goal for the Bulldogs, and Nathan Douglas had the assist on the Raul Lopez goal.
Concordia returns to GPAC play on September 25 with a 3 pm contest at Dakota Wesleyan University.
Douglas' hat trick lifts Concordia to 4-3 win over Midland University

Nathan Douglas had a hat trick, and the Concordia University men’s soccer team picked up a big 4-3 GPAC win over Midland University on Wednesday afternoon in Fremont. The Bulldogs improved to 4-3-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play with the win. Midland dropped to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in the GPAC with the loss.
Douglas scored two of his three goals in the first half, as the Bulldogs took a 2-0 advantage into the halftime break. Both goals were unassisted. Midland, however, came out strong in the second half. The Warriors used goals by Jake Corum, John Podraza and Christian Meyer to take a 3-2 lead with less than 20 minutes remaining in the contest.
Concordia rallied down the stretch. Aaron Skipworth scored off an assist by Matt Brink to tie the game at 3-3. Douglas scored the game-winner, his third goal of the game, with less than five minutes remaining in regulation. Skipworth had the assist on the game-winning goal.
The Bulldogs held an 11-7 shot advantage in the contest. Chris Podlich made three saves to pick up the win in goal for the Bulldogs, while Josh Hawkins made five saves in a losing effort for the Warriors.
Concordia hosts the University of Sioux Falls on Homecoming this Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 8 pm at Bulldog Stadium.
Big first half leads Sioux Falls past Concordia, 4-1

The University of Sioux Falls scored three goals in the first half and pulled away for a 4-1 men’s soccer win over Concordia on Saturday evening in Seward. The Cougars improved to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play with the victory. Concordia slipped to 4-4-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play with the loss.
Brice Holiday scored an early goal to put Sioux Falls in front just minutes into the contest. The goal followed a corner kick by Cody Lutes.
The Bulldogs tied the game less than four minutes later on a goal by Aaron Skipworth. Todd May picked up the assist with a tremendous crossing pass on the game-tying goal. USF responded quickly with a goal less than a minute later. Conner Shefte scored his seventh goal of the season off an assist by Ivan Campos to put the Cougars back on top by the score of 2-1.
Cole DeBoer added the final goal of the first half to put the Cougars on top 3-1 heading into halftime. Tervor Holzmer put home the final goal of the game late in the second half for the final score of 4-1.
The game featured 33 combined fouls, five yellow cards and one red card. Concordia held a 13-11 advantage in shots on the night. Adam Wemhoff made four saves in net for the Cougars. Blake Studer made one save for Concordia on the evening.
Concordia hosts Nebraska Wesleyan on October 5. The game is scheduled for 7 pm at Bulldog Stadium.
Bulldogs pull away from Nebraska Wesleyan, 3-1

Concordia University picked up a key 3-1 men’s soccer win over Nebraska Wesleyan University at Bulldog Stadium on Tuesday evening. The Bulldogs improved to 5-4-2 overall on the season with a 3-2 mark in conference play. Concordia is currently tied for fourth place in the GPAC standings. The Prairie Wolves fell to 3-8-1 overall and dropped to 2-3-1 in the GPAC with the loss.
Todd May put the Bulldogs on top 1-0 with a goal early in the first half. It was May’s second goal of the season, and it followed a corner kick by Aaron Skipworth. Skipworth scored later in the first half to put the Bulldogs up 2-0. Skipworth is second on the team with four goals on the year.
The score remained the same until late in the second half. Wesleyan’s Brad Fullerton scored his third goal of the year to pull the visiting Prairie Wolves within one at 2-1 with just under seven minutes remaining in regulation.
Concordia’s Kolt O’Kelly scored his second goal of the season in the final minute to put the finishing touches on the Bulldog win. O’Kelly’s goal increased the Concordia lead to 3-1, and Nathan Douglas was credited with the assist.
Concordia held a commanding 22-9 advantage in shots. The Bulldogs totaled 11 shots in each half and also held a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. Chris Podlich made three saves to pick up the win in goal for the Bulldogs. Scott Sutherland made seven saves in a losing effort for Nebraska Wesleyan.

Bulldogs top Dordt College, 3-2

Concordia University held on for a 3-2 men’s soccer win over Dordt College on Saturday afternoon in Seward. It was the second straight win for the Bulldogs, now 6-4-2 overall and 4-2 in conference play this season. Dordt fell to 3-8-2 overall and 1-5-1 in conference play with the loss.
Aaron Skipworth got the scoring started for Concordia with a goal early in the first half. Nathan Douglas was credited with the assist on a corner kick, and Skipworth put it home for his fifth goal of the season. Late in the first half, Steven Talsma scored for Dordt College to tie the game at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Todd May put Concordia back on top by the score of 2-1 with a penalty kick goal. It was May’s third goal of the season. Kurt O’Kelly followed with his first goal of the season in the 65th minute to increase the Bulldog lead to 3-1.
Dordt College cut into the lead in the 70th minute. Devin Williams scored his third goal of the year to make the score 3-2. Concordia was able to hold off the late rally attempt, and the Bulldogs secured the conference victory.
Concordia held a 20-11 advantage in shots for the game. The Bulldogs totaled 10 corner kicks compared to just one for the visiting Defenders. Chris Podlich made three saves to pick up the win in goal for Concordia. Brian Verwolf made five saves for Dordt College.

Skipworth and Douglas lead Concordia in 8-0 rout of York College

Aaron Skipworth and Nathan Douglas scored two goals apiece in the first half, and the Concordia University men’s soccer team routed York College by the score of 8-0 on Wednesday evening in Seward. It was the third straight win for the Bulldogs, now 7-4-2 overall on the season. York College dropped to 1-13 on the year with the loss.
Skipworth started the scoring for the Bulldogs with a goal in the second minute of the game. Douglas put the Bulldogs up 2-0 with a goal in the 24th minute, and Skipworth had the assist. Skipworth put home his second goal of the game in the 32nd minute off a great pass by Kurt O’Kelly. Douglas made the score 4-0 with his second goal of the half in the 37th minute. Skipworth and Douglas are tied for the team lead with seven goals on the season.
Todd May and Kolt O’Kelly also added unassisted goals in the first half to put Concordia on top by the score of 6-0 heading into halftime.
The Bulldogs continued the onslaught in the second half with two more goals. Ian Euler scored his second goal of the season, and O’Kelly added his second goal of the game (fourth of the season) to round out the scoring for Concordia.
Chris Podlich made one save in goal for Concordia. Andrew Percic made nine saves for York College in a losing effort.
Concordia travels to Mount Marty College on Saturday. Scheduled start time is 4 pm in Yankton.
Late goal gives Mount Marty 2-1 win over Concordia

Mount Marty’s Tyler Neu scored with less than two minutes remaining in the game, and the Lancers picked up a 2-1 men’s soccer win over Concordia on Saturday afternoon. The Lancers improved to 5-9 overall and picked up their first conference win of the season (1-7) with the victory. Concordia slipped to 7-5-2 overall and 4-3 in conference play with the loss.
Juan De La Cruz put Mount Marty on top 1-0 with a goal in the fifth minute of the game. The opening goal was scored following a corner kick by Jose Rocha.
Concordia’s Tyler Groskurth scored to tie the game at 1-1 in the second half. Neu scored the game-winner in the 88th minute, and the Lancers held on for the victory.
The Bulldogs held a slim 18-15 advantage in shots. Mount Marty had eight corner kicks compared to five for Concordia. Diego Ortiz made seven saves and picked up the win in goal for the Lancers. Blake Studer made six saves but suffered the loss for the Bulldogs.
Concordia travels to Doane College for a key GPAC contest on October 20.
Strecker and Smith spark Doane in 5-4 win over Concordia

Doane College trailed by three goals on two occasions but rallied for a 5-4 men’s soccer win over Concordia on Wednesday evening in Crete. Devon Strecker had three goals to lead Doane to the win. Concordia led 3-0 and 4-1 before the Tigers mounted the comeback. Doane scored four unanswered goals in the final 22 minutes of the game to pick up the win. The Tigers improved to 10-5 overall and 7-2 in the GPAC with the victory. Concordia dropped to 7-6-2 overall and 4-4 in GPAC play with the tough loss.
Concordia took advantage of multiple scoring opportunities in the first half. Aaron Skipworth scored his team-best eighth goal of the season in the 25th minute to put Concordia on top 1-0. Kolt O’Kelly added his fifth goal of the season in the 35th minute to increase the Bulldog lead to 2-0, and Todd May put the Bulldogs up 3-0 with a goal in the 40th minute. It was May’s fifth goal of the season, and Concordia settled for the 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
Doane College got on the board early in the second half. Strecker scored following a corner kick to pull the Tigers within two at 3-1. Later in the second half, Concordia’s Tim Soenksen scored his third goal of the season to put the Bulldogs back up three at 4-1.
Kyle Smith scored for Doane in the 68th minute to cut the lead back down to two at 4-2. With just over 10 minutes remaining in the contest, Strecker scored his second goal of the game via penalty kick to pull the Tigers within one at 4-3. Smith put home his second goal of the game for Doane in the 82nd minute to tie the game. Strecker then scored the game-winner with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation.
Doane College held a 17-9 advantage in shots for the game. The Tigers had 11 corner kicks compared to five for Concordia. Chris Podlich made two saves for Concordia on the night. Matt Bickley made three saves and picked up the win for Doane.

Bulldogs drop third straight as Morningside rallies for 2-1 victory

Morningside College rallied for a 2-1 men’s soccer win over Concordia University on Saturday evening in Sioux City. Morningside moved to 6-8-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the GPAC with the win. Concordia suffered its third straight tough loss. The Bulldogs are 7-7-2 overall and 4-5 in conference play following the loss.
Aaron Skipworth put Concordia on top with a penalty kick goal in the second half. It was Skipworth’s team-best ninth goal of the season. However, Morningside responded with two goals within four minutes of each other. Mike Marian scored his second goal of the season with 17 minutes remaining in regulation. Kyle Larkin was credited with the assist. With 13 minutes left in the game, Rick Kievits scored his eighth goal of the season to put the host Mustangs on top. Jeremy Lenz picked up the assist on what turned out to be the game-winning goal for Morningside.
The Mustangs totaled 13 shots in the game (five shots on goal) compared to 10 for the Bulldogs (six shots on goal). Concordia held a slim 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Matt Mayfield made five saves and picked up the win for Morningside. Chris Podlich made three saves in a losing effort for Concordia.
Concordia travels to Hastings College for a 7:30 contest against the undefeated and GPAC-leading Broncos on October 26.
Thiel's hat trick leads Hastings College to 3-0 win over Concordia

Yannic Thiel had a hat trick, and the Hastings College men’s soccer team earned a 3-0 win over Concordia University on Tuesday evening in Hastings. The Broncos improved to a perfect 15-0 overall with a 9-0 mark in conference play with the win. The recent struggles continued for Concordia. The Bulldogs (7-8-2 overall, 4-6 GPAC) have lost four straight and have fallen to ninth place in the conference standings.
It didn’t take long for the Broncos to take the lead, as Thiel scored in the third minute of the game. Ryan Robinson picked up the assist, as the Broncos took the early 1-0 lead. Thiel scored his second goal in the 31st minute off an assist by Jordan Green. The Broncos settled for the 2-0 lead at halftime. Thiel completed his hat trick early in the second half off another assist by Green for the final of 3-0.
Concordia struggled to find rhythm offensively. Hastings held a 25-4 advantage in shots. Concordia managed just two shots on goal in the game. Kolt O’Kelly and Raul Lopez each had two shots for the Bulldogs.
Cody Poteat and Dru Kobs combined for the shutout for Hastings College. Each made one save. Chris Podlich made eight saves and allowed the three goals for Concordia. Blake Studer played the final 10 minutes of the game for the Bulldogs.
Concordia hosts Briar Cliff University on Saturday evening. The game is scheduled for 8 pm on Senior Night at Bulldog Stadium.
Late goal pushes Briar Cliff to 2-1 victory over Concordia

Chase Beiermann scored with less than three minutes left in regulation to lift Briar Cliff University to a 2-1 men’s soccer win over Concordia University on Saturday evening in Seward. The Chargers improved to 7-7-2 overall and 5-4-2 in the GPAC with the win. Concordia suffered its fifth straight loss and dropped to 7-9-2 overall and 4-7 in conference play.
Alex Witmer scored an early goal to give Briar Cliff a 1-0 advantage. Witmer found the net in just the second minute of the game and despite playing a man down for a good portion of the first half, Briar Cliff took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Early in the second half, Concordia’s Ian Euler (Lincoln, Neb.) scored his third goal of the season to knot the score at 1-1. Aaron Skipworth (Colorado Spring, Colo.) was credited with the assist for the Bulldogs.
Both teams had multiple chances down the stretch, but Briar Cliff came up with the game-winner in the 87th minute. Thomas Hunt had the assist on Beiermann’s goal, and the Chargers secured the 2-1 victory.
Concordia held a 22-16 shot advantage. Kyle King (12 saves) picked up the win for the Chargers. Chris Podlich (Brisbane, Australia) made eight saves in a losing effort for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs will be the No. 8 seed in the GPAC Tournament which begins on November 4. Concordia travels to No. 1 Hastings College (17-0, 11-0 GPAC) for a 6 pm contest against the Broncos.
Season ends for Bulldogs with 2-0 loss to Hastings College in GPAC Quarterfinals
Hastings College, the top seed in the 2010 GPAC men’s soccer tournament, picked up a 2-0 win over Concordia on Thursday evening in Hastings. The Broncos advanced in the tournament and improved to 18-0 on the season with the win. Concordia ended the year with a 7-10-2 overall record. Concordia lost its final six games of the season.
Despite only scoring two goals, Hastings dominated play with a 24-3 advantage in shots in the match. The Broncos totaled 16 shots in the opening half compared to just one for the Bulldogs. Kolt O’Kelly, Tim Soenksen and Ian Euler managed the only shots on the night for Concordia. Yannic Thiel totaled eight shots by himself for Hastings College, while Nate Polak added six shots in the game for the Broncos. Hastings also held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Thiel put the Broncos on top with a goal in the 37th minute of the first half. Jordan Green picked up the assist. The score remained the same until fairly late in the second half. Green scored off an assist by Polak for the final score of 2-0.
Cody Poteat made two saves to pick up the win in goal for the Broncos. Chris Podlich made 10 saves but allowed the two goals in a losing effort for Concordia.
Skipworth, O'Kelly and May pick up GPAC honors
The 2010 Great Plains Athletic Conference men’s soccer all-conference team has been selected. Aaron Skipworth, Kurt O’Kelly and Todd May earned conference honors for Concordia.
Skipworth was an All-GPAC Second Team selection. The sophomore forward from Colorado Springs led Concordia with nine goals on the season. He was second on the team with four assists for a total of 22 points. Skipworth also had two game-winning goals on the year.
O’Kelly and May were honorable mention All-GPAC selections. O’Kelly, a junior defender from Littleton, Colorado, started 18 games for the Bulldogs in 2010. He totaled one goal and two assists for a total of four points. His lone goal was a game-winning goal.
May appeared in 14 games with 12 starts during the 2010 season. The sophomore midfielder from Brighton, England, was tied for third on the team with five goals. He also added two assists. His 12 total points was good for third on the team.
Concordia finished the 2010 season with a 7-10-2 overall record to go along with a 4-7 mark in conference play.
Lias and Geu receive NAIA Scholar-Athlete award
The NAIA has announced that 284 men's soccer student-athletes have been named 2010 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Seniors Jacob Lias and Dan Geu each received the honor for the Bulldogs. In order to be nominated by an institution's head coach, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status to qualify for this honor.
This is the second Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete award for both Lias and Geu. Lias (Sioux Falls, S.D.) Lias started all 19 games as a defender for the Bulldogs in his senior season. Geu (Colorado Spring, Colo.) appeared in 10 games with five starts in the 2010 season.
Concordia was 7-10-2 overall and 4-7 in the GPAC this season.
