Ultimately, Topil’s heroics clinched a spot in the 40-team 2014 NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round and a place in Saturday’s GPAC title affair with Morningside (12 p.m.).

  • A successful spring break in Kissimmee, Fla., ended on Thursday with a close loss to a nationally-ranked foe and then a 5-4 win with the help of Camry Moore's homer. The Bulldogs went 7-1 on the trip.

  • The Concordia University softball team brought less offensive flair to Wednesday’s games than it did two days earlier. No matter, another tripleheader of games saw three more wins as first-year head coach Todd LaVelle’s Bulldogs moved to 6-0 on the young season. Even while shuffling around the lineup with youngsters and new faces, Concordia found ways to defeat Valley City State (N.D.) and Purdue North-Central (Ind.) by identical 6-4 scores and then Presentation (S.D.) by a 3-2 final.
