SEWARD, Neb. – After dropping its first two matches of spring break, the Concordia University Men’s Tennis team bounced back on Saturday (March 13) with a 5-2 home victory over Tabor College (Kan.). Joe Bindl kept his personal win streak alive while the Bulldogs won four of six singles and two of three doubles matches over the visiting Bluejays. The matchup was contested inside the Fieldhouse due to inclement weather outdoors.
Head Coach David DeSimone’s squad had been defeated the previous two days by Bethel College (Kan.) and Iowa Central Community College. Concordia’s record stands at 4-2 overall.
“Our men played very well today,” DeSimone said. “We started off with solid doubles and carried it into singles. After some tough matches yesterday against Iowa Central, I enjoyed the way we competed. Eduardo (Rojas) had a slow start in singles but really picked it up and played very well in the second set and 10-point tiebreaker.”
The Bulldogs came up a hair short of sweeping through doubles. The combos of Bindl and Jeremy Berryman at No. 2 and Juan Rabellino and Luke Zoller at No. 3 both won by 6-2 final scores. At No. 1, Rojas and Jack Kitson were edged out, 7-5.
Many of the nail-biters did not go Concordia’s way against Iowa Central on Friday. In other words, DeSimone was delighted to see Rojas pull out the tiebreaker at No. 1 singles. Bulldog victories were also claimed by Berryman at No. 2, Zoller at No. 4 and Bindl at No. 5. A native of Papillion, Neb., Bindl just keeps on winning. He’s now 6-0 this season in singles. In addition, Bindl and Berryman are 3-0 as doubles partners.
Tabor (2-7) also fell at Doane, 6-1, on Friday. The Bluejays compete as a member of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Concordia will be right back at home next Saturday (March 20) to host NCAA Division II Emporia State University. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT. If the weather allows, the match will be played on the outdoor courts.
