Bulldogs and Red Raiders up next in GPAC slate

SEWARD, Neb. – Concordia University, Nebraska Men’s Tennis will travel to Orange City with a chance to grab momentum once again in the match against Northwestern on Saturday (April 1). The Bulldogs came out strong against the defending GPAC champion Morningside but lost in a heartbreaker (3-4) to the visitors. CUNE has a 9-6 overall record and a 1-1 showing in conference play.

The Dawgs came out ready to push the No. 18 Mustangs to their limits as the No. 2s Santiago Abadia and Ben Chisholm took their doubles set, 6-4. After No. 3s lost for Concordia, No. 1s Nick Velders and Hugo Fuentes prevailed in a 7-5 victory to take doubles. After the Bulldogs dropped No. 3, 4, and 5 in singles, No. 2 Velders (7-6 (5), 7-6 (4)) and No. 1 Fuentes (2-6, 6-3, 6-1) evened the score at 3 points apiece to give the home squad a shot at an upset over MSIDE. No. 6 Abadia was unable to finish it off for the Bulldogs.

With the singles win, Velders continues to make an impressive first season record for himself, having only lost one match with 14-1 (2-0 GPAC) singles showing. The Prairie State transfer has amassed a 9-3 slate when paired with Fuentes in the doubles set. They have won three of their last four together.

Against Morningside, Fuentes defeated 47th-ranked Mark Trenkle (ITA) in three sets to seize his sixth win in singles (6-8). He has 19 wins in his career.

No. 3s Abadia and Chisholm have hit double digit wins (10) as a duo and have won three of their last four also. Abadia has 33 doubles wins in his career and 11 (team high) this season.

The Bulldogs have an 11-4 record against the Red Raiders since 1998 and have won the last eight meetings. In the stretch, Concordia has a 44-14 point record in the past eight meetings.

Opponent

Northwestern is 3-9 overall and fell in its first match to Morningside (1-6) in Sioux City, Iowa. The Red Raiders will face Midland on Friday. Mateo Flores (5-7), Jose Calderon (4-8) and Collin Harmelink (4-8) pace the team with the best records.

Concordia will face Hastings and Midland in conference bouts next week. The Bulldogs will host the Broncos at the Bulldog Tennis courts and the Warriors are set to be at home in Fremont.
