SEWARD, Neb. – The Bulldogs got a look at the defending GPAC champions on Saturday (Mar. 16) at their home turf. Grady Works collected the lone point (1-6) as the visitors ran into an experienced Midland squad. The two teams will see each other again as this match was scheduled as a non-conference bout in Fremont.
The Bulldogs drop to 5-8 overall and will get a week break to regroup before re-entering conference play. Head Coach Lisa Hart commented on the team play and the wins.
“We played hard but just ran into a really tough and experienced opponent. Grady (Works) grinded out a big time win and I’m happy to be able to see him get going as of late. He and Mitch (Krumm) made some big plays to take their match in doubles. We will get some practice in this week and get ready to take on Morningside next weekend.”
Works at No. 4, fell (6-7) in a set that needed extra play but rebounded with a 6-2 dominant showing in the second. The Lincoln, Neb., native came in clutch with a 10-4 tiebreaker triumph. Works was paired with Mitch Krumm at No. 3s and was a bright spot for Concordia in the 7-6 set win.
No. 1s Manuel Rodriguez and Hugo Fuentes faced an energetic pairing in Joren Stevens and Benjamin Starman and pushed them in a 4-6 set. No. 2s Santi Abadia and Michael Bedrosian fell to some Midland newcomers as the home team stole the doubles allotment.
Others competing in singles were Fuentes (No. 1), Abadia (No. 2), Rodriguez (No. 3), Bedrosian (no. 5) and Johnson (No. 6).
Midland is 6-3 with an exhibition coming against Iowa Central Community College and then faced a tough William Woods University (Mo.) program.
Concordia (5-8) will take on Morningside (7-3) driving out to Sioux City on Saturday (Mar. 23). The two will clash at the Mason Family Tennis Complex at 12:30 p.m. CT.
