Bulldogs even record with 5-4 win over Simpson
Powered by four victories in singles competition, the Concordia Bulldogs men's tennis team evened their record at 1-1 this season with a 5-4 win over Simpson College on Friday, Feb. 17. The loss dropped Simpson to 1-4 on the season.
Concordia fell behind 2-1 after dropping the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches, but responded with a strong showing in singles. Sophomore Nathan Wingfield (Greendale, Wisc.) got the Bulldogs rolling with a quick 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 3 position over Blake Billings.
Mere moments later, junior Cole Egger (Galca, Iowa) and sophomore Michael McCartney (Davenport, Iowa) also posted straight set victories. Egger downed Simpson's Jeff Armstrong 6-3, 6-3, while McCartney bested Andy Arduser, 6-4, 6-3.
With the match hanging in the balance at 4-4, senior Jeremy Jank (Hastings, Neb.) did what a senior playing at the No. 1 singles slot is supposed to do, he delivered. Jank dropped the opening set to Simpson's Adam Summitt 6-0, but rallied for a 0-6, 6-3, 10-4 win to claim the match.
The Bulldogs return to action on Friday, Mar. 2 against Bethel College at 4 p.m. It will be the season opener for the Concordia women.
