LINCOLN, Neb. – Concordia University Nebraska Men’s Tennis competed in the GPAC Fall Individual Tournament this past weekend (Sept. 27-28). All eight Bulldogs competed and the team took home two different championships, both in doubles play.
Concordia is done for its fall season and Head Coach Lisa Hart commented on the progress and looking forward to the spring season to come.
“Very proud of our men’s and women’s teams' progress this fall. We have come a long way. Excited for all of our players to continue developing and working hard to prepare for our dual match season in the spring.”
Santi Abadia and Manuel Rodriguez paired up to win three straight matches to take the doubles championship in draw B. The two went 6-2, 6-4 and 6-2 in the bouts. In draw C, Grady Works and Michael Bedrosian followed suit taking four straight 6-0, 6-3, 6-2 and 7-5 to win the bracket final.
Nick Velders was the singles highlight winning over three straight opponents to make the tournament final. Velders bested Joren Stevens (8-4), Jose Purizaca (9-8(3)) and Youssef Boubaker (8-4). The junior transfer took Kazuma Kato down to the wire but fell in the championship (6-8).
Duos Hugo Fuentes and Nick Velders plus Mitch Krumm and Ethan Phinney went 1-1 in their perspective pairings. Abadia, Krumm, Phinney and Rodriguez all went 1-1 in their individual singles play.
Fuentes and Works also competed in singles in the GPAC Fall Individual Tournament.
Concordia will pick back up in the spring for dual action and look to show its growth in conference play before the GPAC tournament. The Bulldogs went 2-4 in the conference last season.
