Velders' slices competition for first conference honor

SEWARD, Neb. – Newcomer Nick Velders led the Bulldogs to three straight wins, earning a weekly honor as announced by the league office on Wednesday (March 26). Velders claimed the GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports Men's Tennis Player of the Week after defeating all competitors in consecutive sets. He earns the first honor of his career and the first for Concordia University, Nebraska Men’s Tennis this season.

No. 2 Velders led the team with three victories over Kansas Wesleyan University, 6-1, Avila University (Mo.), 7-0, and Mount Marty, 4-3. The Prairie State College transfer defeated his opponents 37-12 (3-0) in games and paired with Hugo Fuentes at No. 1s for a 7-5 set victory over the Coyotes and 6-4 over the Lancers.

In his first year at Concordia, the Apeldoorn, The Netherlands, native has a team-high 13 wins with only one loss at No. 2 singles. He was recently ranked No. 45 in ITA NAIA singles. Velders and Fuentes are 8-4 as a team this season.

The Bulldogs are set to face Morningside tomorrow (March 27) at noon CT. CUNE will take on the Mustangs at the Bulldogs Tennis Courts in Seward, Neb.
