Bulldogs sweep GPAC weekly honors on the track
SEWARD, Neb. – Two GPAC-leading Bulldog athletes swept weekly GPAC honors on the track, as announced by the league on Wednesday. Senior John Cartier and sophomore Kim Wood have been named Hauff Mid-America Sports GPAC Men’s and Women’s Track Athletes of the Week. The honor is the third in 2013-14 for Cartier and the first for Wood (see list at bottom).
Wood, already the GPAC leader 1,500 meter run entering last week, blazed to an automatic national qualifying time of 2:13.88 in the 800 meter run at the Nebraska Wesleyan Open on April 24. That time places the native of Greeley, Neb., at No. 11 on the NAIA list. Wood also ran the lead leg for the Concordia women’s 4x800 meter relay that qualified for nationals in a time of 9:24.10 (second in GPAC, ninth in NAIA) at the Drake Relays on April 26.
Cartier, ranked No. 1 in the conference in the 400 meter dash, starred on two relays last week. He ran the anchor for the national qualifying 4x400 meter relay that finished in 3:14.09 at the Drake Relays. That time is best in the GPAC and fifth in the NAIA. The native of Las Vegas, Nev., also helped the 4x200 meter relay to a school record time of 1:27.30. Two days earlier, Cartier placed second in the 200 meter dash at UNL’s Pre-Drake meet. He clocked in at 21.69.
Cartier and Wood will be back in action for the 2014 GPAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Doane on Friday and Saturday. At the conference indoor meet, Cartier won the 400 meter title and was part of the 4x4 championship. Wood won GPAC indoor titles in the 1,000 meter and one mile runs.
