Lurz collects second-straight GPAC weekly honor
SEWARD, Neb. – For the second-straight week, Concordia freshman Zach Lurz has been named the GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports Men’s Field Athlete of the Week, as announced by the conference on Wednesday.
The native of Torrington, Wyo., has burst onto the scene this outdoor season, easily eclipsing national qualifying marks in the discus, hammer throw and shot put. At the April 12 Concordia Outdoor Invite, Lurz broke the school record in the shot put with his toss of 57’ 3”, moving past the 2009 record of 56’ 4 ¾” by Brock Simonsen.
Not only did Lurz win a Concordia Invite title in the shot put, he also placed first in the discus (166’ 1”) and set a new personal record in the hammer throw with a third-place mark of 186’ 3.” Lurz has finished among the top four of the discus, hammer and shot in all three outdoor meets this season.
Lurz currently leads the GPAC in discus and the shot while ranking second in the hammer behind teammate Cody Boellstorff. On the national list, Lurz sits second in both the discus and the shot put and fifth in the hammer throw. Lurz and Concordia-Portland’s Darien Moore are the only two throwers to rank among the NAIA’s top five in all three events.
Lurz and the Bulldogs return to action Friday and Saturday at the Doane Relays in Crete, Neb. View the event schedule HERE.
