Concordia University assistant track and field coach Ed McLaughlin has announced the signing of four student-athletes. All four will compete in the throws for the Bulldogs.
On the women’s side, Nicole Hass (Bridgeport, Neb.) and Sara Saltz (Milford, Neb.) will throw for the Bulldogs beginning next year. Nicole is a 3-time All-Nebraska shot and discus thrower. This year, Hass was seventh in the discus (115-6) and eighth in the shot put at the Nebraska State Meet. Coach McLaughlin talked about both signings.
“I think Nicole has the potential to step in as a freshman and be highly successful,” noted McLaughlin. “She is a great addition to our program. Her strong work ethic and love of throwing are two of the major reasons I recruited her to Concordia.”
“Sara is a hard worker and loves to throw,” added McLaughlin. “She came to our camps and is excited to be a member of our throwing squad next year.”
On the men’s side, the Bulldogs have signed Trey Farmer (Seward, Neb.) and Adam Aschenbrenner (Malcolm, Neb.).
“Trey is a hard worker,” said McLaughlin. “He came to a number of our camps, and he has shown the ability to be a solid performer for us in the coming years.”
Aschenbrenner, who will also participate on the Bulldog football team, had a strong senior year. Earlier in the meet, Chris Tegtmeier (Fairbury, Neb.) finished as the National Champion Runner-up in the 5,000 meter racewalk. Bulldogs add five throwers to recruiting class
14 JUN 2011
Concordia University assistant track and field coach Ed McLaughlin has announced the signing of five out-of-state athletes for the upcoming school year. All five athletes will compete in the throws for the Bulldogs.
On the men’s side, Concordia signed Jose Rojas, Joel Ripke and Ben Schulteis.
Rojas, a native of Nogales, Arizona, was a 3-time State Champion (two shot, one discus) during his high school career. “Jose is a great addition to our team,” remarked McLaughlin. “He has the potential as a freshman to compete with the big boys in our conference. He is highly competitive, and I think he is going to be able to do some great things. He fought an injury this year and was still able to improve and win when it was needed. That shows toughness that an athlete needs to be successful.”
Ripke (Fayetteville, Ind.) will compete in both football and track & field for the Bulldogs. “I’m excited that Joel decided to come to Concordia,” said McLaughlin. “He has a huge frame, and that is going to help a lot. He hasn’t even started to tap into his abilities as a thrower. He improved his discus by over 20 feet this year and made state. I was recruiting him as a shot putter, and then he started to figure out the discus. I’m happy for Joel, and he is excited to start throwing next year.”
Schulteis is an All-State thrower out of Iowa and was the first athlete to sign in this year’s class. “Ben is a big and funny guy who is going to fit in great in our program,” noted McLaughlin. “He came to our camp last summer and I was impressed with his discus and also with what he showed me in the shot put, an event he didn’t even do in high school. The guy just loves to throw and is always looking to improve.”
“All three of these guys have the ability to compete at the GPAC level during their freshman seasons,” added McLaughlin. “They are going to work hard, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them make a national team in one event or the other.”
Brittany Erdmann and Nicole Perry signed with the Bulldogs on the women’s side.
Erdmann is an All-State performer from Mayer, Minnesota. “I’m very happy that Britt decided to come to Concordia,” said McLaughlin. “She has shown a great affinity for the shot put. She had a rough senior year due to the weather. However, when it counted she was able to throw her best at state, something she has done repeatedly through her career. She is a wonderful young woman who is going to make an impact as a freshman. She loves throwing and is constantly telling me how she can’t wait to compete at the college level. Brittany has a great chance to fight for GPAC honors as a freshman.”
Perry comes to Concordia from Menifee, California. “Nicole has a lot of raw talent,” noted McLaughlin. “She has only been throwing for two years and has a huge upside. On her visit, she showed a willingness to learn and the athletic ability to put the techniques to work. I am looking forward to watching her improve and shock people as the years go on.”
