Bulldogs fall to Viterbo, defeat College of St. Mary at Bruin Classic
Concordia University went 1-1 in the final day of the Bruin Labor Day Classic Volleyball Tournament on Saturday in Bellevue. The Bulldogs suffered a 3-0 loss to Viterbo before picking up a 3-1 win over College of St. Mary. Concordia is now 3-6 on the year.
Amy Braaksma had a match-high 12 kills, and Stacie Hoffman handed out 27 set assists to lead Viterbo to an easy 3-0 win to start the day. Scores of the match were 25-15, 25-14 and 25-21. Hannah Ripp and Katie Flock added nine and eight kills, respectively, while Jordan Blaken totaled a match-high 23 digs in the Viterbo win.
Amanda Kisker (Lincoln, Neb.) finished with a team-best 10 kills to go along with 10 digs, and Amanda Abbott (Temecula, Calif.) added nine kills for the Bulldogs. Kayla James (Gibbon, Neb.) had 14 set assists, and Carli Smith (Temecula, Calif.) led the way defensively for Concordia with 16 digs.
Scores of the Bulldog win over College of St. Mary were 25-23, 20-25, 26-24 and 25-18. Kisker led the way offensively again for the Bulldogs with a match-high 15 kills. Abbott also reached double figures with 10 kills, while Kaylie Mellema (Axtell, Neb.) and Ashlea Vaudt (Kalispell, Mont.) added nine and eight kills, respectively, for a balanced Bulldog offensive attack. Alexa Hopping (Sutherland, Neb.) totaled 30 set assists in the match. Mariah Schamp (Arvada, Colo.) added seven kills and six assisted blocks, while Angela Bruhn (Creston, Neb.) chipped in with 18 digs to lead the way defensively.
Kaylee Wallace had 12 kills to lead the way for College of St. Mary in the loss.
Concordia opens GPAC play at home against Midland University on September 7. The JV contest is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. with the varsity match to follow at the Walz Human Performance Complex.
