Get to know you Q&A: Drew Olson

Drew Olson returned to his alma mater as Head Women’s Basketball coach prior to the 2006-07 season. Over 15 seasons leading the Bulldogs, Olson has posted an overall record of 407-107. Among the highlights, Olson guided Concordia to an NAIA Division II national championship in 2019 as one of 13 national tournament appearances. His resume also includes 12 total GPAC titles. In this Q&A, Olson discussed his coaching influences, favorite aspects of the profession and a whole lot more.

Which athlete(s) did you idolize growing up?
My brother Jarrod, Magic Johnson, Jason Kidd.

Who are your favorite professional sports teams?
Dallas Cowboys, New York Yankees, whichever basketball team shares the ball.

What is the most memorable sporting event you have attended as a spectator?
2003 Western Conference Finals Spurs @ Lakers. The Masters golf. US Open tennis.

Which person/people were most influential in your career choice?
My brother Jarrod my Dad Rich.

What is one book you would recommend to others in your profession?
“How Champions Think” – Dr. Bob Rotella.

What’s the best coaching advice you’ve received?
“Do something fun every day.” - Dad

What do you find most rewarding about coaching?
Seeing players become better on and off the court and in their relationship with Christ.

What has changed the most about the profession since you started coaching?
Early decisions in recruiting. Scouting on VHS to scouting on Synergy.

Beyond athletic talent and ability, what is the No. 1 trait you’re looking for in a prospective recruit?
Toughness/Competitiveness, Selflessness.

What athletic achievement of your own are you most proud of?
Winning GPAC tournament in 2003.

How are you most likely spending your free time away from work?
With M’Leigh and our five kids.

What would you choose to eat for your last meal?
Bacon avocado burger with sweet potato fries and fruit.

What’s your favorite Lincoln (or Lincoln area) restaurant?
La Paz.

Where have you gone (or are planning to go) for vacation this summer?
Lost Island Waterpark in Waterloo, Iowa.

Twitter.

What genre of music do you prefer?
All – oldies, rock, pop, country.

What was the first car you drove?
Red Mazda6.

What is the No. 1 thing that makes Concordia a special place?
The hearts of the people.

What is it that keeps you excited about your job as you look ahead to the 2021-22 academic year?
I am excited to see my players form into a family.
