Bulldogs hold off York for a 74-71 win in opener

The Bulldogs built a 13-point lead with 4:26 left and then held off a York College rally for a 74-71 victory in the season opener at York on Nov. 6. Vanessa Frana hit two free throws with 4.6 seconds left after the Panthers hit a pair of three to pull within 72-71 with 5.5 seconds remaining. The Bulldogs, off to a jittery start, led 32-30 at half. Five players scored in double digits. Kuhlman and Frana each scored 13 to pace the Bulldog attack. Mooney and Kobza each added 11 points and 10 points were scored by Crystal Weimer, who led rebounders with 10. Amanda DeBerry led York with 19.
Kobza leads 64-61 victory over Southwestern

Kobza scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked four shots to lead the Bulldogs to a 64-61 win over Southwestern College in the first game of the classic on Friday. trailed, 34-26, at half and were down 14 with 12 minutes left. Amy Streuter and Jonie Ficken hit big three’s as the Bulldogs cut the lead.
“Our defense was outstanding the last eight minutes of the game,” Parker said. “We keep winning with good defense the last 10 minutes of games – hopefully our offense will get on track soon.”
Sara Kuhlman poured in 10 points and Ficken nine. Friends won over Benedictine, 63-58, in the other game.
“We played very poorly offensively the first half with 14 turnovers and only three free-throw attempt,” the coach said.
Friends defeats Bulldogs, 66-60, at Lady Builders Classic

The Concordia women’s basketball team split two games at the Lady Builders Classic in Winfield, Kan., last weekend. The Bulldogs opened the season with a 74-71 win at York College on Nov. 6.
Friends University of Wichita hit 23 of 26 free throws to defeat the Bulldogs, 66-60, on Saturday. Both teams hit 20 field goals while Concordia had only 11 of 22 free throws. Concordia, after trailing 29-27 at half, opened an eight-point lead with 12 minutes to go when a number of unforced errors led to a long scoring drought.
“Another good defensive game kept the Lady Bulldogs in the game against a good opponent,” Coach Micah Parker said.
The Bulldogs had balanced scoring with Vanessa Frana netting 11, Sara Kuhlman and Jonie Ficken each 10 and Becky Mooney nine. Hayle Kobza led Bulldog rebounding with six. Offensive production was hurt when the Bulldogs did notqualify for the one-and-one free throws in the second half.
“We shot the ball well,” Parker said. “We just didn’t get enough shots because of the turnovers. We are making a lot of simple mistakes that turn into major factors in a close game.”
Bulldogs defeat Friends, 58-49, at Sterling

Hayle Kobza scored 19 points as Concordia won over Friends University, 59-48, at the Pizza Hut Classic at Sterling College on Nov. 17. The Bulldogs had lost the previous game to Friends, 66-60. Concordia hit 20 of 26 free throws with balanced scoring in Jonie Ficken and Amy Streuter with nine each and Becky Mooney and Sara Kuhlman with eight each. Streuter hit three from beyond the arc. Mooney led rebounders with seven.
Concordia defeats Sterling, 73-68, at Pizza Hut Classic

Hayle Kobza scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs to a 73-68 win over Sterling College at the Pizza Hut Classic at Sterling, Kan., on Nov. 18. The Bulldogs led at half, 34-30. Vanessa Frana added 12 points, Amy Streuter 11, Jonie Ficken nine and Leah Berens 8.
Bulldogs defeat Kansas Wesleyan, 102-56, at Cattle Classic

Concordia jumped off to a 50-26 halftime lead and went on to defeat Kansas Wesleyan, 102-56, in the opening day of the Cattle Classic in Seward on Nov. 24. Leading scorers for Concordia were Vanessa Frana with 16, Sara Kuhlman 13, Dani Adams and Leah Berens each with 10 and Becky Mooney and Amy Streuter each with nine. Kuhlman led the rebounding department with seven while Adams had six assists.Amanda Cramer's 13 led the Coyotes. Southwestern beat Central Christian, 109-39, in the first game.
Concordia holds off rally to beat Southwestern, 89-78

Concordia turned back a late rally by Southwestern College of Winfield, Kan., to go 2-0 at the Cattle Classic. After maintaining a 10-point margin most of the game, the Lady Builders pulled within 68-67 with seven minutes remaining. Two three-points by Becky Mooney helped relieve the pressure and the Bulldogs pulled away in the final two minutes. Hayle Kobza led the Bulldogs with 17 points, followed by Leah Berens with 16, Sara Kuhlman with 14, Vanessa Frana with 12 and Becky Mooney with 10. Frana and Berens were named to the all-classic team along with Niki Nicolaus of Southwestern, Amanda Cramer of Kansas Wesleyan and Jill Isaacson of Central Christian. Kansas Wesleyan defeated Central Christian, 73-68, in the first game.
Bulldogs turn it on in second half at Doane, 86-76

Doane outhustled Concordia in the first half, but the Bulldogs roared back in the final period to win the GPAC opener, 86-76, at Doane on Nov. 29. Concordia was down 31-24 before Crystal Wiemer led a late charge to pull within 35-33 at the break. Jonie Ficken hit a three-pointer to open the second half and the Bulldogs never trailed again. Concordia led 64-51 at 11:27 and held off the late Tiger charge. Wiemer led the Bulldogs with 19, Ficken added 15, Hayle Kobza 14, Vanessa Frana 12 and Elizabeth Rhoden 10. Kate Reeson led Doane with 24.
Concordia loses at Mount Marty, 87-66, on Dec. 2

Twenty-five turnovers spelled doom for the Bulldogs as they lost their first GPAC, 87-66, to Mount Marty at Yankton, S.D., on Dec. 2. Concordia trailed at half, 43-31. Jonie Ficken led the Bulldog scoring with 21. Sara Kuhlman and Leah Berens each popped in nine and Amy Streuter eight. Berens got six rebounds and Kuhlman five.
Late rally propels Midland past Bulldogs, 89-83, on Dec. 5

Midland Lutheran College went on a 10-0 run after Concordia led, 78-69, with 5:32 remaining and went on to defeat the Bulldogs, 89-83, in a GPAC game at Seward on Dec. 5. Concordia led 43-38 at half. Only five players scored for the highly regarded Warriors, four in double figures. The Bulldogs also had four in double digits, Sara Kuhlman with 18, including 12 for 12 at the free throw line, Hayle Kobza with 16, and Jonie Ficken and Becky Mooney each with 12. Kuhlman and Crystal Wiemer both had six rebounds while Amy Streuter had eight assists and four steals. The Bulldogs hit only four of 22 shots beyond the arc.

Four Bulldogs scored in double figures as Concordia defeated Dordt, 77-46, in a GPAC game at Seward on Dec. 9. The Bulldogs led at half, 32-21. Hayle Kobza poured in 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds to pace the attack. Jonie Ficken scored 13 and dished out seven assists. Becky Mooney scored 12 and Cheri Aliu 10. Helping control the boards with six rebounds each were Amy Streuter, Sara Kuhlman and Crystal Wiemer. Mooney and Kuhlman each had four assists.
Concordia beats Trinity, 89-44, in first round at Clarke tourney

Five Bulldogs scored in double figures as Concordia overwhelmed Trinity International, 89-44, in the first round of the Clarke College Holiday Basketball Tournament Dec. 27 at Dubuque, Iowa. The Bulldogs hit 50.8 percent of their field goal attempts, 39 percent from three-point range. Concordia dominated the boards, 55-30, with Elizabeth Rhoden and Hannah Krenz each pulling down seven, Leah Berens and Sara Kuhlman, each six, and Dani Adams and Hayle Kobza, each five. The Bulldogs caused 23 turnovers, although giving up 20 themselves. Kuhlman had four steals and Amy Streuter four assists. Scoring for Concordia were Kobza 16; Berens 13; Vanessa Frana, Cheri Aliu and Kuhlman, each 11; Becky Mooney 9, Rhoden 8, Streuter 7 and Ruth Thompson 3.
Bulldogs advance to Clarke finals with 68-47 win over Calvin

Concordia hit eight of 14 three-point attempts and were 20 for 26 at the free throw line as they defeated Calvin College, 68-47, Friday night. The victory put the Bulldogs in the finals of the Clarke College Holiday Basketball Tournament against Viterbo University at 5 p.m. on Dec. 30. Becky Mooney hit four of seven long-range shots and was perfect in four tries at the charity stripe to lead the Bulldogs with 16 points. Hayle Kobza potted 14 and Sara Kuhlman 12. Kuhlman led the rebounding corps with eight while Hannah Krenz pulled down six and Elizabeth Rhoden and Leah Berens five each. Krenz also had two blocks and two steals. Three assists each were credited to Amy Streuter, Dani Adams and Vanessa Frana. Concordia turned over the ball 25 times compared to 20 for Calvin. The Bulldogs led 35-24 at half.
Kuhlmann, Mooney named to all-tournament team
Sara Kuhlmann, 5-10 senior forward from Jefferson City, Mo., and Becky Mooney, 5-6 junior guard from Cleveland, Ohio, were named to the Clarke College Holiday Tournament all-tournament team. Mooney scored 37 points in the three games while Kuhlmann scored 36 and grabbed 21 rebounds.
Viterbo takes Clarke tourney title, 76-65, over Bulldogs

Viterbo University won the Clarke College Holiday Basketball Tournament with a 76-65 win over Concordia on Dec. 30. The Bulldogs had balanced scoring in the game where the score was tied twice and the lead changed six times. Viterbo held a 37-31 halftime advantage. Twenty-five turnovers hurt the Bulldog cause as Viterbo scored 20 points off of steals. The Wisconsin team took 15 more shots, hitting 52.5 percent. Concordia hit 45.5 percent (20 of 44). Concordia was 20 for 24 at the free-throw line with Amy Streuter perfect on seven and Sara Kuhlman missing only one of eight. Streuter also had four assists. Hayle Kobza and Kuhlman each had seven rebounds. Kuhlman led the scoring with 13 while Becky Mooney, Streuter and Vanessa Frana each added 12.
Concordia defeats Dana, 88-56, on Jan. 3

Balanced scoring again helped Concordia as they returned to Great Plains Athletic Conference competition at Dana on Jan. 3. The 88-56 victory found Hayle Kobza scoring 17, Sara Kuhlman 16, Vanessa Frana 13, Leah Berens 13 and Jonie Ficken nine. The Bulldogs only had 13 turnovers compared to 33 for Dana. The halftime margin was 43-29. Kuhlman's six rebounds topped that department and Amy Streuter had three assists. The Bulldogs were 36-48 at the free-throw line with Frana hitting 11 without a miss. "We did a great job of getting our posts the ball early," Coach Micah Parker said. "Our guards played well defensively. Dana's players all seem to have the green light to shoot three's but I can only remember one that was not contested well by us." The coach said Berens, Ficken, Elizabeth Rhoden and Cheri Aliu had good games coming off the bench.
Slow start halts Concordia, 70-51, at Dakota Wesleyan

Concordia hit only 21.4 percent of field goal attempts in the first half to fall behind 30-16 at the break as they lost to Dakota Wesleyan, 70-51, on Jan. 6 at Mitchell, S.D. They warmed up to 51.7 percent in the second half but only hit three for 19 three-point shots for the game. Jonie Ficken scored 11 to lead the attack while Becky Mooney and Leah Berens each added eight and Hayle Kobza seven. The Bulldogs were outrebounded, 32-26, with Hannah Krenz leading Concordia on the boards with seven. Mooney, Dani Adams and Elizabeth Rhoden each had three assists.
Bulldogs upset #9 Hastings, 79-74, at home on Jan. 9

Cheri Aliu hit a three-pointer from the corner with 1:17 left after connecting on two free throws to ice a 79-74 upset of #9 Hastings College at Seward on Jan. 9. Hastings, which trailed by 53-40 with 14:36 left, made a comeback to lead, 68-67, with 4:08 remaining. Jonie Ficken added to the margin with two free throws with 13 seconds left. Concordia led at half, 41-27, after the Broncos spurted to an 8-4 lead in the first three minutes. Hayle Kobza led the Bulldogs with 18 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots. Ficken scored 12, Amy Streuter 9, Sara Kuhlman and Aliu 8, Dani Adams 7, Vanessa Frana six, Becky Mooney 5, Hannah Krenz 4 and Elizabeth Rhoden 2. Kuhlman had six assists and Ficken four. Concordia hit 27 of 32 free throws. Elizabeth Herbek scored 21 and Mary Stuehm 19 for Hastings. Herbek grabbed 13 rebounds.
Sioux Falls holds off Concordia, 86-78

Despite five Concordia players scoring in double figures, the University of Sioux Falls downed Concordia, 86-78, in a GPAC game at Sioux Falls on Jan. 13. The Cougars held a 43-37 halftime edge. The teams were evenly matched as both shot almost 51 percent from the field and more than 65 percent from the free-throw line. The Cougars made five more field goals. The Bulldogs held a 35-33 edge in rebounding but turned the ball over 20 times compared to 14 for the Cougar. Hayle Kobza paced the Bulldog scoring with 18 while Amy Streuter had 17, Sara Kuhlmann 13, Vanessa Frana 11, Becky Mooney 10 and Jonie Ficken 9. Kuhlmann had seven rebounds while Ficken, Kobza and Leah Berens each pulled down four. Kobza blocked two shots. Kuhlmann and Mooney each had three assists. Amanda Spronk paced Sioux Falls with 20 points and seven rebounds.
Concordia whips Nebraska Wesleyan, 74-57

Five Bulldogs scored in double figures as Concordia jumped to an early lead and were never threatened as they defeated Nebraska Wesleyan, 74-57, at Seward on Jan. 17. The Bulldogs went on a 10-0 run midway in the first half to pull ahead 30-14. It was 41-36 at the break. Leading the scoring barrage was Hayle Kobza with 16, Jonie Ficken 14, Amy Streuter 12, Vanessa Frana 11 and Leah Berens 10. Four of Concordia's first six buckets were three-pointers. Grabbing most 48 rebounds was Kobza with nine and Ficken with seven as the Prairie Wolves only had 39. Streuter had five assists and Frana made two steals.
Concordia upsets #1 Northwestern, 85-79

Concordia upset NAIA #1 Northwestern College, 85-79, at Seward on Jan. 20. The Bulldogs went on a 9-0 run with eight minutes left after the Red Raiders had opened a 64-59 advantage. Northwestern pulled within 74-73 with 1:27 remaining, but the Bulldogs went 6-6 at the free throw line in the final minute. Concordia survived 21 turnovers by hitting 29 of 36 free throws. Both teams finished without their leading scorers, Rachel Binneboese and Hayle Kobza, when they fouled out midway in the second half. Concordia was led by 18 points each by Kobza and Becky Mooney, who also had 11 rebounds, three steals and three assists. It was 41-40 for Concordia at half after Northwestern had built seven-point margins at four different points. Northwestern hit 31 fields goals, but only two for 11 from three-point range. The Bulldogs had 25 field goals and 6 for 17 from behind the arc. Concordia got 44 points from the bench, compared to 18 for the Red Raiders. One of those players, Cheri Aliu, hit three of four three-point tries to total 13 points. Another, Vanessa Frana, grabbed seven rebounds. Joni Ficken and Sara Kuhlmann each scored nine for the Bulldogs. Amy Streuter had three assists. Northwestern is now 17-3 and 7-1 in the GPAC. Concordia, 14-6, is 6-4 in GPAC play.
#15 Concordia tops #17 Peru State, 75-60

Concordia went on a 9-0 run with eight minutes left in the first half to overcome an early Peru State lead and win, 75-60, at Seward on Jan. 23. It came on the same day the Bulldogs cracked the NAIA Top 25 with a ranking of 15th after the Jan. 20 upset of #1 Northwestern College. Peru was ranked #17 on the same day. The Bulldogs padded the margin early in the second half and built it to the final margin. Hayle Kobza had 17 and Jonie Ficken 13 for Concordia while Tonya Volk hit 25 for Peru. Concordia overcame 19 turnovers by outrebounding Peru, 40-25. Kobza led rebounders with six while Ficken and Army Streuter each grabbed five. Ficken also had five assists.
Bulldogs top St. Paul, Mequon for CIT title

Concordia Nebraska used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Concordia Wisconsin, 82-57, Saturday and capture the championship of the Concordia Invitational Tournament. They advanced to the finals with an 87-81 overtime win over Concordia St. Paul on Friday afternoon at River Forest, Ill.
It was the sixth CIT title in a row for the Bulldogs and the 12th in the last 14 years. They have captured 14 titles since the women’s division was started in 1973. Post player Hayle Kobza, a senior, was named most valuable player and sophomore guard Amy Streuter was named to the all-tournament team.
Wisconsin advanced to the finals with a 55-53 win over Concordia River Forest, who lost to St. Paul, 86-49, in the consolation finals.
“We expected to win CIT,” Coach Micah Parker said, “but we know we've more important things to concentrate on right now. We are in a great situation being 17-6 and nationally rated (#15), but we have six very tough games staring us in the face. I'm confident we'll respond well as a team to the upcoming challenges.”
The Bulldogs entertain Doane College at 7:30 on Wednesday night and travel to Orange City, Iowa, for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday against Northwestern College, rated #3 on Jan. 23 after they were knocked from #1 with a 85-79 loss at Seward on Jan. 20. They follow with another trip to Midland on Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m.
The Bulldogs used a balanced scoring attack to win the CIT title. The Falcons from Mequon got a 4-0 jump in the opening minutes, the only times they saw the lead after the Bulldogs dominated with a combination of inside and outside attacks.
Jonie Ficken, who scored 14 points, made three assists and stole the ball three times, kept the scoreboard humming with four three-pointers without a miss in the first half while Kobza was on the bench in foul trouble. Kobza had 11 points on the night with two blocks and three steals before fouling out. Sara Kuhlman (13), Hannah Krenz (6) and Leah Berens(14) filled the void by combining for 33 points.
“Our depth really paid off,” Parker said, “because of the overtime game Friday and the fact that we felt we could press Mequon. Everyone played and contributed, which always is fun for the team.”
The Bulldogs hit 53.7 percent of field-goal attempts, turned the ball over 21 times and lost the rebounding battle, 39-32.
“The Mequon game was a battle within ourselves,” the coach said. “We did what we needed to win, but we didn't play the best game, especially offensively. We would push the lead to six or eight and then have two turnovers in a row.” A second-half stretch without turnovers put the game out of reach.
Seward 81, St. Paul 81 (overtime)
Becky Mooney stroked in six straight free throws in the final 44 seconds of overtime to allow the Bulldogs to defeat St. Paul, 87-81, on Jan. 26. But the Cleveland, Ohio, junior wasn’t the only Bulldog with success at the charity stripe as the Seward team hit nine of 10 in the overtime to add to a 26 for 32 total in the second half. They hit 44 of 51, 86.3 percent, for the game as St. Paul won the field-goal battle, 30-19, but fouled 30 times to 19 for the Seward team.
“This was a very big physical team,” Parker said, “but our effort was outstanding.” The Bulldogs outrebounded the NCAA Division II Golden Bears, 49-42, with Kobza grabbing 13. Lisa Harfield pulled down 15 for St. Paul and led their scoring with 28. Four Bulldogs scored in double figures with Kozba pacing the attack with 26 points, Vanessa Frana adding 15 and Mooney and Streuter each 13. Dani Adams had two assists. Seward led in the first half until Harfield’s court-long drive tied it at the buzzer, 34-34. The Bulldogs held their biggest margin at 60-47 with eight minutes to go. St. Paul pecked away and went ahead, 72-71 with two minutes left. Harfield tied it at 75 with a free throw with 28 seconds left, but missed a second attempt that would have given them the lead. The Golden Bears led twice in the overtime until Kobza hit a free throw with 1:24 left, setting the stage for Mooney’s final surge.
“The St. Paul game was a great learning experience for our team,” the coach said. “One of the most rewarding things as a coach is to see your team respond to an adverse, pressure situation and we did that. Having St. Paul's fans directly behind our bench was difficult due to the noise, profanity, and flying object. We made stops when we had to and had some players really step up on the offensive end. Amy Streuter, Becky Mooney, and Vanessa Frana had very good games from the perimeter."
Bulldogs lose, 76-71, to late Doane surge on Jan. 31

Doane College didn't connect on a three-point shot the first 13 1/2 minutes of the GPAC game at Seward on Jan. 31. But they popped in six the rest of the way to defeat Concordia, 76-71. Lindsey Schultz hit four of them. The Tigers hit 20 of 25 shots in the last 15:27 to overcome a 50-30 Bulldog margin. It was 35-24 for the Bulldogs at half. Doane scored 21 points off of 23 Concordia turnovers. The bulk of Doane scoring came from Amanda Creighton, 22, Erin Gillespie, 19, and Schultz, 16. Hayle Kobza led Concordia with 17 while Vanessa Frana had 13 and Jonie Ficken 10, Sara Kuhlmann 9, Amy Streuter 8 and Becky Mooney 7. The Bulldogs outrebounded Doane, 43-35, with Mooney collecting six and Frana and Kobza each five. Northwestern jumped to a 51-22 halftime lead by hitting 70 percent of their field-goal attempts and held on for a 84-56 victory in a GPAC game on Feb. 3 at Orange City, Iowa. The NAIA #5 Red Raiders avenged an 85-79 loss to the Bulldogs when they were rated #1. Five Northwestern players scored in double figures, led by Kara Christoffer with 16. Hayle Kobza scored 12 for Concordia while Amy Streuter had eight and Leah Berens seven. Sara Kuhlmann led Bulldog rebounding with six grabs. The loss dropped Concordia to 6-6 in the GPAC.
Last-second shot drops Bulldogs, 79-77

Nikki Gargano's five-foot jumper with 2.2 seconds remaining gave Midland Lutheran College at 79-77 GPAC victory over Concordia at Fremont on Feb. 6. Gargano finished with 29 points and 21 rebounds. Concordia shot 58.6 percent from the floor to gain a 45-37 halftime lead, but cooled to 34.6 percent in the second half. Midland won the battle of the boards, 41-36. Leading the way for Concordia in scoring was Vanessa Frana with 16, while Jonie Ficken added 12 and Crystal Wiemer, seeing her first action after sitting out with a stress fracture, scored 11. Dani Adams scored nine and Sara Kuhlmann and Hayle Kobza each had eight. Kobza led the rebounding with eight and Wiemer grabbed seven. Becky Mooney had four assists. The score was tied 14 times and the lead changed hands 14 times. The Bulldogs hit 21 of 26 free throws, but were outscored in field goals, 32-26.
Concordia pulls away from Dordt, 78-72, on Feb. 10

Concordia took the lead with about six minutes remaining and pulled away to defeat Dordt College, 78-72, in a GPAC game Feb. 10 at Sioux Center, Iowa.
Dordt held a 34-31 halftime lead after shooting 62 percent from the three-point arc. Concordia had five players in double figures, led by guard Jonie Ficken with 19. Amy Streuter added 18, Sara Kuhlmann 12, Crystal Wiemer 11 and Hayle Kobza 10. Streuter and Wiemer each grabbed six rebounds while Dordt's Alexis Smith topped the game with 11. The Lady Defenders were led by freshman guard Rachel Schutte with 17. The Bulldogs connected on 53 percent of field-goal attempts, 25-47, included nine of 23 from three-point range (39 percent.) They hit 19 of 25 free-throw attempts. Concordia now finishes the regular season with home games against Dana and Dakota Wesleyan.
Bulldog free throws drop Dana, 71-61, on Feb. 14

Concordia hit 21 of 28 free throws to make up for 37 percent shooting from the field to earn a 71-61 GPAC victory over Dana College at Seward on Feb. 14. Four Bulldogs scored in double figures -- Hayle Kobza with 15, Amy Streuter with 12 and Jonie Ficken and Sara Kuhlmann each with 10. Kobza hauled down 14 rebounds and Kuhlmann seven. Streuter contributed four assists. The Bulldogs turned the ball over 19 times to 16 for the Vikings. Dana, which started an all-freshman lineup, was within reach at 58-57 with 3:20 left before Concordia pulled away. Leading the scoring for Dana were Nicole Hasse with 12, Erin Stoeffel with 11 and Mililani Monis with 10. Concordia has only one regular-season game remaining -- Dakota Wesleyan at home on Feb. 17 at 1 p.m.
Dakota Wesleyan nips Bulldogs, 73-66

Dakota Wesleyan defeated Concordia, 73-66, at Senior Day (Hayle Kobza and Sara Kuhlmann) on Feb. 17 at Seward. The teams were among six that were knotted with 8-7 records going into the final day of the GPAC schedule. Concordia led, 38-35, at half. The Tigers hit 45 percent from the floor compared to Concordia's 31.3. The Bulldogs outrebounded the South Dakota team, 52-38. Jonie Ficken with 16, Kobza with 14, Amy Streuter with 11, Dani Adams eight and Crystal Wiemer seven led the Concordia scoring. Kobza grabbed 11 rebounds and Kuhlmann, who had six assists, pulled down seven. Becky Mooney had three steals. Nikki Weber carried the load for Wesleyan with 23 while Emily Janssen added 18.
Bulldogs vs. Hastings in 1st-round GPAC battle
Concordia was seeded #7 and matched with #2 Hastings College (20-8) in the GPAC championships. They will play at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at Hastings. In the other half of the bracket, #3 Mount Marty will play at #6 Sioux Falls (14-14) the same day and time. The winners will meet Saturday at the home of the highest seeded team.
#1 Northwestern (24-4), winner of the regular season championship that gave them an automatic bid to the NAIA Division II national tournament, will entertain #8 Doane (20-12) Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. The victor of the game in that bracket will face the winner of the 6 p.m. game at Mitchell, S.D, that matches #4 Dakota Wesleyan (14-14) and Midland Lutheran College (19-10). The winners meet Saturday. Dordt and Dana did not qualify for the championships and Nebraska Wesleyan competes in NCAA Division III.
If Northwestern wins the tournament, the runner-up will get the second GPAC national tournament spot.
Concordia defeated Hastings, 79-74, at Seward on Jan. 9. The Bulldogs lost one game each on the road to the others in their bracket, 87-66 to Mount Marty on Dec. 6 and 86-78 to Sioux Falls on Jan. 13. Concordia, which has a chance to record its 20th win of the season at Hastings, is 3-5 in GPAC road games.
Hastings is riding an eight-game winning streak and has gone 10-2 since the loss to Concordia.
Bulldogs lose to Hastings. 76-70

Hastings took a 33-30 halftime lead and went on to defeat Concordia, 76-70, in a GPAC championships quarterfinal game Feb. 21 at Hastings. Mary Stuehm lead the #2 seeded Broncos with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Scoring for Concordia were Becky Mooney with 14, Dani Adams 13, Hayle Kobza 12, Joni Ficken nine, Amy Streuter eight, Sara Kuhlmann six, Leah Berens five and Elizabeth Rhoden three. Kobza had 10 rebounds and Adams nine. Ficken recorded seven assists and four steals. Concordia's 27 field goals were one more than Hastings hit, but the Broncos were 22-31 at the free throw line while Concordia was 9-18. Hastings was only two for 12 from three-point range while the Bulldogs hit seven of 26 tries. The Bulldogs turned the ball over 23 times.
