No. 22 Concordia opens season with big win over York College

The No. 22 Concordia University women’s basketball team opened the season with a convincing 78-50 win over York College over the weekend. Three players scored in double figures as the Bulldogs cruised to the easy win.

Concordia used solid defense and hot shooting from the three point line to take a 44-24 lead into halftime. The Bulldogs were 8-of-15 (53.3%) from the three point line in the opening half of play and forced several York College turnovers to jump out to the big lead. For the game, York College turned it over 27 times compared to just 12 for Concordia.

Stacy Scheer, Katie Rich and Angela Kuca all scored 10 points to lead the way offensively. Beth Kohmetscher added nine points, and Kristin Miller had eight points in a balanced attack for Concordia. Rich and Brittany Johnson each grabbed a team-high six rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Carrie Berger had a game-high 20 points to go along with five assists to lead the way for York College. Juliana Bassetto added 10 points, while Lorena Medeiros scored eight points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for the Panthers.

Concordia hosts Bethany College on Tuesday evening in a 6 p.m. contest at the Health, Human Performance and Athletic Center.

Balanced scoring leads No. 22 Concordia to 81-66 win over Bethany College

Concordia University, ranked No. 22 in the NAIA, earned an 81-66 victory over Bethany College on Tuesday evening in Seward. The Bulldogs used a balanced scoring attack to pull away for the victory.

The game stayed close for most of the first half. The Bulldogs used a 7-0 run to take a 41-30 lead with just under two minutes remaining and took a 43-32 lead into halftime.

Concordia led by as many as 13 early in the second half. However, the visiting Swedes managed to hang around and tied the game at 47-47 with 13:40 remaining in the game. Concordia quickly responded with an 11-1 run to reclaim control of the game. The Swedes made one final rally attempt to pull within five at 61-56, but the Bulldogs secured the 81-66 win.

Concordia scored 36 points in the paint and capitalized on Bethany’s mistakes with 30 points off turnovers. The Bulldogs also held a 10-4 lead in fast break points.

Five players scored in double figures in a balanced Concordia offensive attack. Angela Kuca scored a team-high 19 points, and Katie Rich added 18 points and six rebounds to lead the way. Kristin Miller added a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Stacy Scheer and Treva Nutter added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Bulldogs. Nutter also added a game-high eight assists for Concordia.

Rhys Pihl had a tremendous evening for Bethany College in defeat. Pihl scored 41 points and added nine boards for the Swedes. She went 9-of-18 from the field and hit 20-of-22 free throws in the contest. No other player reached double figures for Bethany College.

Concordia returns to action with road games at Mount Mercy College on Nov. 7 and Briar Cliff University on Nov. 8.

No. 22 Concordia University earned an 80-63 women's basketball win over Mount Mercy College on Saturday afternoon in Sioux City. Concordia improved to 3-0 on the young season with the win, while Mount Mercy dropped to 1-2 on the year with the loss.

Mount Mercy led by as many as nine early in the first half, but Concordia rallied to trail by just one at 34-33 at halftime. Concordia quickly claimed the lead in the second half and used a 9-0 run midway through the second half to take a 70-52 lead. The Bulldogs led by as many as 20 down the stretch and settled for the 17-point win.

Concordia hit 25-of-59 shots in the game for 42.4 percent. The Bulldogs were 7-of-25 from the three point line for 28 percent and 23-of-31 on free throws for 74.2 percent. Mount Mercy connected on 23-of-60 shots in the game for 38.3 percent. The Mustangs were 6-of-29 from the three point line for 20.7 percent and 11-of-16 on free throws for 68.8 percent. Concordia held a 40-36 rebounding advantage in the contest.

Stacy Scheer had a game-high 19 points to lead the way for the Bulldogs offensively. Scheer also added six rebounds and four assists. Freshman Katie Rich had 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds, and Kathryn Ommen also had 14 points. Treva Nutter added 12 points and four assists in a balanced offensive attack for the Bulldogs.

Shanda Novak had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Mustangs in the loss. Emily Greiner scored 10 points and was the only other player to reach double figures for Mount Mercy.

Concordia returns to action with a 3 p.m. contest at Briar Cliff on Sunday.

Turnovers cost No. 22 Concordia in 97-67 loss to Briar Cliff

Briar Cliff University pulled away for a 97-67 women’s basketball win over No. 22 Concordia University on Sunday afternoon in Sioux City. The Chargers improved to 2-0 on the year with the win. Concordia lost its first game of the season and is now 3-1.

The first half was very competitive with Briar Cliff taking a 37-33 lead into the halftime break. BCU used an 8-0 run early in the second half to take a 50-37 lead. The Bulldogs would rally to within eight points on two different occasions, but the Chargers again managed to pull away for the easy victory.

Both teams struggled with turnovers. Concordia turned the ball over 41 times, while Briar Cliff turned it over 35 times in the game. Briar Cliff hit 31-of-65 shots in the contest for 47.7 percent. The Chargers were 5-of-12 from the three point line and 30-of-37 from the foul line.

Concordia hit just 23-of-71 shots in the game for 32.4 percent. The Bulldogs struggled from three-point range, hitting only 5-of-24 attempts in the loss. Concordia made 16-of-26 from the free throw line.

Liz Grider had a career-high 35 points and added eight steals for Briar Cliff. Morgan Brown added 24 points, a game-high nine rebounds and also had eight steals for the Chargers.

Katie Rich had a team-high 14 points and eight rebounds for Concordia in the loss. Kathryn Ommen added 12 points and six boards, while Kristin Miller poured in 11 points for the Bulldogs.

Concordia hosts York College in the Cattle Classic Tournament on Nov. 13. The tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Health, Human Performance and Athletic Center.

Concordia University pulled away for an 82-54 women’s basketball win over York College on Friday evening in Seward. The Bulldogs, who led from start to finish, improved to 4-1 on the season with the win. York College dropped to 3-3 on the year with the loss.

Concordia jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead and gradually pulled away throughout the opening half of play. Concordia took a 39-28 lead into halftime. In the first half, the Bulldogs scored 21 points off York College turnovers. The Concordia bench also outscored the York College bench 15-0 in the first 20 minutes.

A quick 8-0 run early in the second half increased the Bulldog lead to 47-30. York College was unable to mount a rally, and Concordia settled for the 82-54 win. The Bulldogs scored 22 points in the paint and added 15 points off York College turnovers in the second half of play.

Concordia hit 29-of-67 shots in the game for 43.8 percent. The Bulldogs were 8-of-15 (53.3 percent) from the three point line and 16-of-19 (84.2 percent) from the free throw line in the win. The Concordia defense was solid, as the Panthers turned the ball over 32 times on the evening.

Stacy Scheer and Kristin Miller each had 13 points to lead a balanced scoring attack for the Bulldogs. Katie Rich added 10 points and a team-high five rebounds, and Treva Nutter had nine points. Angela Kuca scored eight points, while Kathryn Ommen and Amber Quinn added seven points apiece for Concordia.

York College hit 22-of-46 shots for 47.8 percent. The Panthers were 3-of-9 from the three point line and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. Kristin Wiedemann had a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds for York College in a losing effort. Lorena Medeiros added 12 points for the Panthers.

Concordia travels to the College of St. Mary for a 7 p.m. contest on Nov. 16.

Big second half leads No. 22 Concordia to 80-66 win over the College of Saint Mary

Concordia University rallied for an 80-66 win over the College of Saint Mary on Monday evening in Omaha. The Flames held a 35-32 lead at halftime, but the Bulldogs used a big second half to come from behind for the 14-point win.

Concordia struggled offensively in the opening half and hit just 3-of-15 from the three point line. The Flames capitalized on Concordia’s cold shooting and took the slim 35-32 lead into halftime.

However, the Bulldogs turned it around in the second half. Concordia went 17-of-39 from the field, 6-of-15 from the three point line and 8-of-9 from the free throw line to erase the Saint Mary lead and take control of the game.

Concordia hit 27-of-75 shots in the game for 36 percent. The Bulldogs were 9-of-30 from the three point line and 17-of-23 from the charity stripe. The College of Saint Mary hit 21-of-59 shots for 35.6 percent. The Flames connected on 18-of-21 from the free throw line but made just 6-of-25 from behind the three point line. Concordia held a commanding 50-32 rebounding advantage in the win. The Flames had 14 turnovers compared to 13 for the Bulldogs.

Angela Kuca and Stacy Scheer led the way for Concordia in the win. Kuca scored 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting from behind the three point line. Scheer had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds and also added a game-high seven assists. Treva Nutter added 16 points and eight rebounds, while Katie Rich pulled down 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Terra Moyers had 17 points and seven rebounds for the College of Saint Mary. Emily Cuva added 12 points, and Karyn Bixler delivered 10 points and eight boards for the Flames.

Concordia travels to Bethany College for a 6 p.m. contest on Nov. 18.

Concordia University picked up a 75-67 win over Bethany College on Wednesday evening. The Bulldogs trailed at half but put together a solid second half to rally for the victory. Concordia won its third straight game and improved to 6-1 on the year with the win. Bethany College dropped to 0-4 with the loss.

For the second game in a row, Concordia struggled offensively in the opening half of play. The Bulldogs hit just 8-of-34 shots overall and 1-of-13 three point attempts in the first 20 minutes. Bethany College led by as many as nine in the first half and settled for a 35-30 halftime lead.

The Bulldogs rallied quickly in the opening minutes of the second half. Concordia used a run to take a 38-37 lead, and it was the first lead for the Bulldogs since early in the first half. Concordia took the lead for good with about nine minutes remaining when Katie Rich connected on a three pointer to give the Bulldogs a 50-47 lead. Concordia used solid rebounding and free throw shooting down the stretch to secure the 75-67 win.

Concordia connected on 20-of-65 shots on the evening. The Bulldogs were just 2-of-18 from the three point line but hit 33-of-45 free throws in the win. Concordia held a 51-40 rebounding advantage and only turned the ball over 11 times compared to 16 for the Swedes.

Stacy Scheer scored 19 points to lead a balanced offensive attack for Concordia. Kat Ommen added 15 points off the bench, and Katie Rich poured in 12 points. Kristin Miller had 10 points, and TaLisa Krejci had nine points for the Bulldogs.

Bethany College was 20-of-60 from the field on the night. The Swedes hit 8-of-21 three point attempts and were 19-of-28 at the free throw line. Rhys Pihl had a game-high 27 points for Bethany College. Amber Dunham added 10 points for the Swedes.

Concordia travels to Mount Marty College for a 2 p.m. contest on Nov. 21.

Mount Marty jumped out early and cruised to an 81-68 women’s basketball win over Concordia on Saturday afternoon. The Lancers remained unbeaten on the season and improved to 8-0 overall and 1-0 in the GPAC with the win. Concordia dropped to 6-2 overall and 0-1 in the GPAC with the loss.

Mount Marty took control of the contest early and led 17-2 with just over 11 minutes remaining in the first half. The Lancers led by as many as 19 in the opening half and settled for a 40-28 halftime lead. Mount Marty held a double-digit lead for the entire second half, as the Bulldogs couldn’t mount a rally.

Mount Marty connected on 22-of-45 shots in the game for 48.9 percent. The Lancers were 8-of-16 from the three point line and 29-of-35 from the free throw line for 82.9 percent. Concordia hit just 24-of-69 shots in the game for 34.8 percent. The Bulldogs struggled from deep, hitting just 5-of-18 from the three point line. Concordia was 15-of-20 from the foul line for 75 percent.

Jenny Miller and Michelle Amundson each scored 23 points to pace Mount Marty in the win. Amundson added a game-high seven boards for the Lancers.

Stacy Scheer had a team-high 21 points for Concordia in the loss. Treva Nutter added 12 points, and Kathryn Ommen had 11 off the bench for the Bulldogs.

Concordia travels to Midland Lutheran for a 6 p.m. contest against the Warriors on Nov. 24.

Concordia University pulled away for an easy 75-43 women’s basketball win over Midland Lutheran on Tuesday evening in Fremont. The Bulldogs improved to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in the GPAC with the win. The Warriors dropped to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in the GPAC with the loss.

Concordia used hot shooting from the field and stingy defense to jump out to a quick advantage. Leading 11-5 early in the game, the Bulldogs used an 8-0 run to take a 19-5 lead with just over 13 minutes remaining in the opening half.

Midland responded with a 10-1 run to cut the Concordia lead to five at 20-15 with just over 11 minutes to play in the opening half. However, the Bulldogs answered with another run of their own to take a 38-22 lead into halftime.

Concordia hit 17-of-29 shots from the field for 58.6 percent in the first half. Midland connected on just 9-of-31 shots from the field for 29 percent in the first 20 minutes.

The Bulldogs came out on fire to start the second half and gradually pulled away for the lopsided win. The Concordia defense limited the Warriors to just 7-of-30 from the field in the second half for 23.3 percent, and the Bulldogs settled for the 75-43 victory.

Concordia was 29-of-67 from the field in the game for 43.3 percent. The Bulldogs were 9-of-18 from the three point line and 8-of-11 from the free throw line for 72.7 percent. Concordia held a 48-43 rebounding advantage, and the Bulldogs forced Midland into 22 turnovers on the evening.

Midland Lutheran hit just 16-of-61 shots in the game for 26.2 percent. The Warriors were 4-of-19 (21.1 percent) from the three point line and 7-of-17 (41.2 percent) from the charity stripe.

Katie Rich scored a game-high 16 points to lead the way offensively for the Bulldogs. Kristin Miller added 15 points and seven boards, and Stacy Scheer delivered nine points and four steals for Concordia in the win.

Kelli Hermsmeyer, Tricia Hoffman, Sharlay Butler and Danielle Stephan all had six points for Midland. Morgan Smeal had seven rebounds for the Warriors.

Concordia returns home to host Doane College on Dec. 2. The tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Health, Human Performance and Athletic Center.

Strong second half gives Concordia 78-60 win over Doane College

Concordia University used a strong second half to pull away for a 78-60 women’s basketball win over Doane College on Wednesday evening in Seward. The Bulldogs improved to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the GPAC with the win. The Tigers dropped to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in the GPAC with the loss.

Doane scored 16 fast break points in the first half, but the Bulldogs managed to take a 35-34 lead into halftime. Doane hit 14-of-31 shots in the first half for 45.2 percent, while Concordia hit 12-of-25 shots for 48 percent. The Bulldogs were 9-of-10 from the foul line in the first 20 minutes.

“We didn’t play very well in the first half,” said Drew Olson, head coach of the Bulldogs. “We weren’t in rhythm offensively, and that led to several easy buckets for them.”

Concordia put together a solid effort in the second half. Doane had just two fast break points in the second half of play, as the Bulldogs clamped down defensively. A balanced scoring attack and more solid free throw shooting down the stretch allowed Concordia to pull away for the convincing win.

For the game, Concordia connected on 26-of-61 shots for 42.6 percent. The Bulldogs were 5-of-15 from the three point line and 21-of-27 (77.8 percent) from the charity stripe. Concordia also held a commanding 51-30 rebounding advantage, and the Concordia bench outscored the Doane College bench 41-24 in the win.

Doane hit 20-of-58 shots in the contest for 34.5 percent. The Tigers were 4-of-16 from the three point line and 16-of-22 (72.7 percent) at the foul line.

Treva Nutter scored a team-high 19 points and added a game-high eight rebounds to lead the way for Concordia. Nutter also had three assists and three steals on the night. “Coach has been telling me all week in practice to focus on driving and kicking out if nothing is open,” said Nutter. “My teammates knocked down a lot of shots tonight. This is big to get a win in our home conference opener. Tonight wasn’t our best game, but it was a big win.”

Kristin Miller added 15 points and seven rebounds for Concordia, while Kathryn Ommen delivered 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench for the Bulldogs.

Hannah Helman scored a game-high 21 points for Doane. Cheryl Braithwait added 15 points, and Kristine Ortmeier had 13 points to go along with four rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Tigers.

“Our second half was much better,” commented Olson. “We’re going to have to play much better on the road, but we’re getting there. To win a game by 18 points in this conference is always good.”

Concordia travels to Dakota Wesleyan University on Dec. 5.

Concordia holds off Dakota Wesleyan 53-46

Concordia University held on for a 53-46 win over Dakota Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon. The win improved Concordia to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Dakota Wesleyan dropped to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in the GPAC with the loss.

Dakota Wesleyan held the lead for a good portion of the first half, but a three pointer by Concordia’s Stacy Scheer gave the Bulldogs a slim 26-24 halftime lead. The Bulldogs connected on just 9-of-28 shots in the opening half of play for 32.1 percent, while DWU went 9-of-22 from the field in the first half for 40.9 percent.

Concordia gradually pulled away and led by as many as 13 (44-31) in the second half of play. Dakota Wesleyan attempted a late rally, but the Bulldogs secured the 53-46 win. Concordia was just 8-of-25 (32 percent) from the field but limited Dakota Wesleyan to 5-of-24 (20.8 percent) shooting in the second half.

For the game, Concordia was 17-of-53 from the field for 32.1 percent. The Bulldogs went 13-of-19 from the free throw line for 68.4 percent and made just 6-of-21 three point attempts in the contest for 28.6 percent. Concordia held a slim 40-35 rebounding advantage and had 17 turnovers for the game.

Dakota Wesleyan went 14-of-46 overall from the field for 30.4 percent. The Tigers were 12-of-15 (80 percent) from the free throw line and were 6-of-21 from the three point line for 28.6 percent. DWU had 20 turnovers in the contest.

Katie Rich had a team-high 10 points to lead the way offensively for Concordia. Stacy Scheer and Treva Nutter each added nine points, and Angela Kuca had eight. TaLisa Krejci had seven points and a team-high seven boards for the Bulldogs in the win.

No. 3 Hastings hangs on for 73-66 win over No. 25 Concordia

Hastings College, ranked third in the NAIA, held on for a 73-66 women’s basketball win over No. 25 Concordia on Wednesday evening. The Broncos improved to 12-2 overall and 4-0 in the GPAC with the win. Concordia slipped to 9-3 overall and 3-2 in the GPAC with the loss.

It was a game of runs in the opening half of play. Hastings College scored the first six points of the game, but Concordia responded with the next nine points to grab an early lead. The Bulldogs led by as many as seven in the first half at 20-13, but the host Broncos used a 12-2 run to reclaim the lead at 25-22. Hastings also led by as many as seven in the first half at 35-28. However, Concordia responded with a rally of its own. The Bulldogs scored the final six points of the half, and a Katie Rich jumper pulled Concordia within one at 35-34 heading into halftime.

Concordia tied the game on a few occasions in the second half but never led. Hastings led by as many as 12 twice in the final half. The Bulldogs managed to hang around. However, solid free throw shooting down the stretch secured the 73-66 win for the Broncos. Hastings College finished 16-of-17 from the free throw line in the game.

Hastings was 27-of-62 from the field. The Broncos hit just 3-of-14 three point attempts but held a 41-36 rebounding advantage over Concordia. Concordia was 22-of-61 from the field. The Bulldogs were 10-of-20 from the three point line and 12-of-19 from the free throw line in the loss.

Rachel Isherwood and Alicia Statler each scored 16 points to lead the way for Hastings College. Statler also added 13 rebounds for Hastings. Kim Faimon added 14 points, and Lindsay Ducey added 10 for the Broncos.

Stacy Scheer had a game-high 20 points for Concordia. Katie Rich had 13, Kristin Miller scored 12 and TaLisa Krejci delivered 10 for the Bulldogs.

Concordia hosts No. 1 Northwestern College on Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. at the Health, Human Performance and Athletic Center.

Northwestern College, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, pulled away for a 77-64 women’s basketball win over Concordia on Saturday afternoon in Seward. The Red Raiders improved to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the GPAC with the win. Concordia dropped to 9-4 overall and 3-3 in the GPAC with the loss.

The first half was close throughout with several ties and lead changes. The Raiders took a slim 35-34 lead into the halftime break. An 8-0 Northwestern run midway through the second half gave the Raiders a 54-45 lead and some breathing room. Concordia would get as close as seven at 57-50, but Northwestern secured the 77-64 win.

Northwestern hit 26-of-69 shots in the contest for 37.7 percent. The Red Raiders were 10-of-22 from the three point line for 45.5 percent and 15-of-19 at the foul line for 78.9 percent.

Kami Kuhlmann had a game-high 21 points to lead the way for the Raiders. Becca Hurley added 19 points, nine assists and six boards, while Randa Hulstein had a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds for Northwestern. The Raiders had 17 turnovers.

Concordia was 20-of-57 from the field for 35.1 percent. The Bulldogs connected on just 8-of-28 from the three point line for 28.6 percent and were 16-of-21 from the foul line for 76.2 percent. Concordia turned it over 21 times in the game.

Stacy Scheer scored 18 points and added six rebounds, three assists and three steals to lead the way for the Bulldogs. Treva Nutter added 15 points and six boards for the Bulldogs.

Cold shooting costs Concordia in 49-42 loss to Holy Names

The Concordia University women’s basketball team suffered a 49-42 loss to Holy Names University on Tuesday afternoon. Both teams struggled offensively, but Holy Names rallied in the second half for the win. The Bulldogs dropped to 9-5 on the year with the loss.

Concordia led by one (21-20) at halftime, but the Hawks (8-9) outscored Concordia 29-21 in the second half to earn the win. Holy Names was 14-of-59 from the field for 23.7 percent. The Hawks were just 4-of-22 from behind the three point line for 18.2 percent and 17-of-24 at the foul line for 70.8 percent. Concordia connected on 12-of-56 shots from the field for 21.4 percent. The Bulldogs were just 2-of-12 from the three point line for 16.7 percent and 16-of-27 at the foul line for 59.3 percent. Concordia held a 47-35 rebounding advantage but also committed 28 turnovers to just 21 for Holy Names.

Jamie-Leigh Ronolo scored 13 points, and McCain Anitra added eight points to lead Holy Names in the win. Katie Rich scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Concordia in the loss. TaLisa Krejci added nine points, and Stacy Scheer chipped in with six points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Concordia will battle Simpson College on Wednesday.

Concordia dominates Simpson University, 81-49

Concordia University cruised to an 81-49 victory over Simpson University on Wednesday afternoon. The Bulldogs improved to 10-5 overall on the year with the win. Simpson dropped to 1-16 with the loss.

Simpson managed to hang tough for much of the first half. The Bulldogs led by just four at 19-15 with just over nine minutes remaining in the opening half. However, a 19-0 run by Concordia to end the half gave the Bulldogs a 38-15 halftime lead. Concordia kept the pressure on in the second half and settled for the 81-49 win.

Concordia hit 30-of-63 shots in the game for 47.6 percent. The Bulldogs were 5-of-18 from three point land for 27.8 percent and 16-of-23 from the foul line for 69.6 percent. Concordia held a commanding 46-28 rebounding advantage and forced Simpson into 25 turnovers.

Simpson connected on 20-of-59 shots in the game for 33.9 percent. The Red Hawks were just 6-of-23 from the three point line for 26.1 percent and 3-of-8 at the free throw line for 37.5 percent.

Katie Rich scored a game-high 15 points to lead the way for Concordia in the win. Kristin Miller delivered a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Stacy Scheer added 14 points, and TaLisa Krejci scored 10 points.

Elizabeth Thomas scored 13 points for Simpson University. Kayla Rackley added 10 for the Red Hawks.

Concordia downs Dana College, 77-60

Concordia University pulled away for a 77-60 GPAC women’s basketball win over Dana College on Tuesday evening in Blair. Concordia moved to 11-5 overall and 4-3 in conference play with the win. Dana dropped to 2-13 overall and 0-6 in the GPAC with the loss.

The host Vikings used hot shooting in the first half to remain close. Dana connected on 11-of-19 shots in the first half for 57.9 percent, but Concordia still held a 35-32 halftime lead. A 12-0 Concordia run midway through the second half allowed the Bulldogs to pull away to a comfortable lead of 58-43. Concordia led by as many as 24 down the stretch and settled for the 77-60 win.

Concordia tightened up defensively in the final half to help pull away for the victory. Dana hit just 9-of-29 shots in the second half for 31 percent, and Concordia forced 30 Viking turnovers on the night.

Concordia hit 23-of-51 shots in the game for 45.1 percent. The Bulldogs were 10-of-20 from the three point line for 50 percent and 21-of-31 at the free throw line for 67.7 percent. Dana held a 34-25 rebounding advantage. Concordia totaled 15 steals on the night and held a 28-18 advantage in bench points. Concordia also capitalized on Dana miscues, as the Bulldogs finished the evening with 42 points off turnovers.

Stacy Scheer had a solid performance on both ends of the floor to lead the way for Concordia. Scheer scored a game-high 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and added five steals and three assists. TaLisa Krejci added 13 points and three steals, while Kristin Miller delivered nine points, five boards, four blocks and a steal for the Bulldogs.

Kalen Carlson scored a team-high 15 points and added nine rebounds for Dana College. Kayla Hofstetter scored 12, and Tricia Trotter added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Vikings.

Offensive struggles plague Concordia in 59-46 loss to Dordt College

Dordt College defeated Concordia by the score of 59-46 in GPAC women’s basketball on Saturday afternoon. The Defenders improved to 10-8 overall and 2-4 in the GPAC with the win. Concordia slipped to 11-6 overall and 4-4 in the GPAC with the loss.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 6-0 lead. Dordt College quickly erased the early deficit, and the teams traded the lead several times throughout the rest of the first half. A jumper by Concordia’s Katie Rich gave the Bulldogs a slim 21-20 lead at the half. It was a struggle offensively for both squads in the opening half. Concordia made just 8-of-34 shots for 23.5 percent, while Dordt connected on just 8-of-31 shots for 25.8 percent.

Dordt grabbed the lead early in the second half and took control of the game from there. The Defenders led by as many as 20 in the final half, as Concordia continued to struggle offensively. The Bulldogs were unable to mount a rally, and Dordt settled for the 59-46 win. Concordia connected on 8-of-33 shots in the second half for just 24.2 percent. Dordt, meanwhile, hit 14-of-27 shots in the final half for 51.9 percent.

Concordia held a 24-18 advantage in point in the paint, an 11-10 advantage in points off turnovers, a 9-5 advantage in bench points and a 22-7 advantage in second chance points. However, Concordia hit just 16-of-67 shots in the contest for 23.9 percent. The Bulldogs were 3-of-21 from three point land for 14.3 percent and 11-of-18 at the foul line for 61.1 percent. Dordt connected on 22-of-58 shots for 37.9 percent. The Defenders were 5-of-20 from the three point line for 25 percent and 10-of-18 from the charity stripe for 55.6 percent.

TaLisa Krejci had a team-high 14 points to lead Concordia, but she was the only player to reach double figures. Stacy Scheer scored eight points and added a team-high eight boards, while Katie Rich added eight points and six caroms for the Bulldogs.

Julia DeKoekkoek scored a game-high 15 points for Dordt College. Amber Soodsma added 14 points, and Kate Du Mez delivered a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Defenders.

Concordia handles Nebraska Wesleyan, 69-33

Concordia University earned a 69-33 win over Nebraska Wesleyan in women’s basketball on Wednesday evening in Lincoln. The Bulldogs improved to 12-6 overall and 5-4 in GPAC play with the win. The Prairie Wolves dropped to 4-9 overall and 1-5 in the GPAC with the loss.

Concordia jumped all over Nebraska Wesleyan in the first half and took a commanding 40-13 lead into halftime. The Bulldogs hit 16-of-29 shots from the field and limited Wesleyan to just 5-of-19 shooting in the opening half of play. Concordia scored 18 points in the paint and 25 points off Wesleyan turnovers to build the huge lead.

Concordia continued to control the game in the second half. The Bulldog defense held Nebraska Wesleyan to just 5-of-17 shooting in the final 20 minutes, and Concordia cruised to the 69-33 win.

For the game, Concordia held a 30-18 advantage in points in the paint. Turnovers hurt both teams throughout the game. Nebraska Wesleyan had 31 turnovers on the night, while Concordia turned it over 21 times. However, Concordia scored 39 points off of Wesleyan turnovers. The Prairie Wolves managed just 12 points off of Concordia’s turnovers.

Concordia hit 25-of-53 shots in the game for 47.2 percent. The Bulldogs were 8-of-27 from the three point line for 29.6 percent and 11-of-15 at the free throw line for 73.3 percent. Concordia held a 36-26 rebounding advantage in the contest. Nebraska Wesleyan hit just 10-of-36 shots for 27.8 percent. The Prairie Wolves were 0-of-8 from behind the three point line and 13-of-21 from the charity stripe for 61.9 percent.

Kristin Miller scored a game-high 14 points to lead Concordia in the win. Treva Nutter delivered 11 points and a team-high five rebounds off the bench. TaLisa Krejci and Stacy Scheer added nine points and eight points, respectively, for the Bulldogs.

Sadie Struebing scored 12 points for Nebraska Wesleyan.

Concordia University earned a 60-52 women’s basketball win over Morningside College on Saturday afternoon in Seward. The Bulldogs improved to 13-6 overall and 6-4 in the GPAC with the win. Morningside dropped to 12-8 overall and 5-4 in the GPAC with the loss.

Morningside jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in the opening minutes of the contest, but Concordia quickly responded. The Bulldogs led by as many as nine in the first half and took a 32-27 lead into the halftime break.

Concordia held onto the lead for the first part of the second half, but Morningside used a 13-2 run to take a 40-36 lead over the Bulldogs with 14 minutes left in the game. Concordia fought back to tie the game at 44-44. A three pointer by Kourtney Rahder gave the Bulldogs the lead for good at 49-46 with just over six minutes remaining. Solid free throw shooting down the stretch secured the 60-52 win for Concordia.

Concordia connected on 20-of-45 shots in the game for 44.4 percent. The Bulldogs were 6-of-19 from the three point line for 31.6 percent and 14-of-16 at the charity stripe for 87.5 percent. Concordia held a commanding 40-28 rebounding advantage, but committed 29 turnovers in the game.

Morningside hit just 17-of-56 shots from the field for 30.4 percent. The visiting Mustangs were 4-of-22 from behind the three point line for 18.2 percent and 14-of-19 at the free throw line for 73.7 percent. Morningside had 17 turnovers in the game.

Stacy Scheer had a team-high 14 points to go along with four rebounds, four assists and two steals to lead the way for Concordia. Treva Nutter added 12 points and two steals off the bench. Kristin Miller delivered nine points and a game-high seven boards, while Angela Kuca also scored nine points for the Bulldogs.

"Tonight was a big win for us," said Scheer. "We really stayed composed throughout the game, and this win should give us confidence as we move forward."

Tanaeya Worden scored a game-high 17 points for Morningside. Chelsie Trask added 12 points for the Mustangs.

Concordia hosts Midland Lutheran on Jan. 20 in a 6 p.m. contest on 80’s Night at the Health, Human Performance and Athletic Center.

Concordia bests Midland Lutheran, 73-69

Concordia University took home a 73-69 win over Midland Lutheran College on Wednesday evening in Seward. The Bulldogs improved their overall record to 14-6 for the season with a 7-4 mark in conference play. Midland slipped to 7-15 overall and 2-8 in the GPAC with the loss.

Stacy Scheer led the Bulldogs with a total of 17 points for the game. Concordia’s second leading scorer, Kristin Miller, added 16 points and nine boards. Treva Nutter poured in 11 points, and Kourtney Rahder scored nine off the bench for the Bulldogs.

Kelli Hermsmeyer had a double-double with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds for Midland. Kerry Butzke scored 16 points, and Traci Flanagan added 10 for the Warriors.

Concordia maintained the lead for a good portion of the first half. The Bulldogs led by as many as 10 (32-22) on a three pointer by Treva Nutter with just under four minutes to play. A jumper by TaLisa Krejci gave Concordia a 35-28 lead heading into halftime.

The Warriors stayed within striking distance throughout the second half. Concordia threatened to pull away several times, but Midland continued to fight back. After several ties, Midland finally reclaimed the lead at 69-67 on a layup by Kelli Hermsmeyer with less than four minutes to play in regulation.

However, the Bulldogs scored the final six points of the game to secure the win. A three pointer by Angela Kuca gave Concordia a 70-69 lead with just over two minutes remaining. Treva Nutter then hit two free throws to bump the Bulldog lead to three at 72-69. Midland had a chance to tie the game in the final minute, but Megan Torkelson missed a long three point attempt. Stacy Scheer secured the rebound and made one of two at the foul line for the final score of 73-69.

“We didn’t give up,” said Kristin Miller. “We kept our composure and made some big plays. We just needed to get the job done.”

Concordia head coach Drew Olson discussed the importance of his team’s maturity. “This is a game we may have lost earlier in the season,” said Olson. “Our team showed a lot of maturity and character tonight, and people stepped up and made plays for us.”

On Saturday, the Bulldogs face No. 7 Briar Cliff University in a 2 p.m. contest on Fan Appreciation Day at the Health, Human Performance and Athletic Center. Briar Cliff defeated Concordia by the score of 97-67 earlier this season. The Chargers are currently 18-3 on the season and 7-2 in GPAC play. “Hopefully we learned from the mistakes we made in our first matchup,” commented Olson. “We’re a better team now. We’ll need to take care of the ball and be ready to play.”

No. 7 Briar Cliff cruises past Concordia, 77-52

Briar Cliff pulled away for an easy 77-52 win over Concordia in GPAC women’s basketball on Saturday afternoon in Seward. The Chargers improved to 19-3 overall and 8-2 in the GPAC with the win. The loss dropped Concordia to 14-7 overall and 7-5 in conference play.

It was a struggle offensively for the Bulldogs throughout the game. Concordia struggled mightily with Briar Cliff’s pressure defense. In the first half, the Bulldogs connected on just 7-of-31 shots from the field and 1-of-10 tries from three point land. Briar Cliff scored 16 points off turnovers in the first 20 minutes and took a 36-20 lead into halftime.

The offensive struggles continued for Concordia in the second half, and Briar Cliff slowly pulled away for the lopsided win. BCU added 18 more points off Concordia turnovers and led by as many as 30 in the final half.

For the game, Concordia was just 16-of-59 from the field for 27.1 percent. The Bulldogs accumulated 31 turnovers and allowed 34 points off of those turnovers in the loss. Concordia was 4-of-20 from behind the three point line and 16-of-26 from the foul line.

Briar Cliff hit 23-of-55 shots in the game for 41.8 percent. The Chargers were 7-of-14 from three point land and 24-of-28 at the free throw line. Briar Cliff had 27 turnovers on the day, but allowed just 19 points off of those turnovers.

Four players scored in double figures in a balanced offensive attack for Briar Cliff. Morgan Brown and Liz Grider each scored 17 points to lead the way for BCU. Grider, the leading scorer in the conference, also added nine rebounds, five assists and four steals. Megan Salcedo added 12 points, and Kylie Dilla scored 10 off the bench for Briar Cliff.

Treva Nutter scored 11 points to go along with six rebounds for Concordia in the loss. TaLisa Krejci added eight points and three assists, and Kristin Miller grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Concordia travels to Doane College on Jan. 27 for a 6 p.m. GPAC contest.

Doane College slips past Concordia, 79-76

Doane College held on for a 79-76 win over Concordia University in GPAC women’s hoops on Wednesday evening. The Tigers improved to 9-14 overall and 5-7 in GPAC play with the win. Concordia dropped its second game in a row to fall to 14-8 overall and 7-6 in the GPAC.

Doane jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the opening minutes of the contest. Concordia pulled within one at 16-15 with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half. However, Doane again created some separation and took a 39-30 lead into halftime.

The Tigers maintained the lead throughout much of the second half, but Concordia stayed within striking distance. Concordia rallied to take its first lead of the game at 71-70 with just under four minutes remaining in the contest, but the lead was short lived. Doane quickly responded with six straight points to grab a 76-71 lead with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.

Stacy Scheer hit two free throws to pull the Bulldogs within three at 76-73, but Kristine Ortmeier connected on two free throws for Doane to give the Tigers a 78-73 lead with less than a minute remaining. A three pointer by Scheer pulled Concordia within two at 78-76 with five seconds left in regulation. Brittany Lurz went one of two from the foul line to give Doane a 79-76 lead with four seconds to play. Scheer missed a last-second three point attempt, and Doane escaped with the 79-76 victory.

Doane was 27-of-51 from the field for 52.9 percent. The Tigers were 5-of-13 from the three point line for 38.5 percent and 20-of-27 at the foul line for 74.1 percent. Doane also held a 36-24 advantage in points in the paint and added 19 points off Concordia turnovers.

Concordia was 22-of-52 from the field for 42.3 percent. The Bulldogs connected on 8-of-22 attempts from three point land for 36.4 percent and 24-of-38 attempts from the foul line for 63.2 percent.

Cheryl Braithwait scored a team-high 18 points to lead the way for Doane College. Vanessa Munter added 17 points, and Kristine Ortmeier added 14 off the bench for the Tigers.

Treva Nutter scored a game-high 20 points for Concordia in the loss. Angela Kuca hit four 3-pointers and scored 15 points on the night. Stacy Scheer and Kourtney Rahder each added 10 points for the Bulldogs.

Concordia will take part in the Concordia Invitational Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Concordia stomps Concordia-Ann Arbor at the Concordia Invitational Tournament

Concordia University exploded for 48 points in the second half and pulled away for a convincing 79-45 win over Concordia University-Ann Arbor in the first round of the 59th annual Concordia Invitational Tournament. The Bulldogs improved to 15-8 on the season and advanced to Saturday’s championship game.

Both teams got off to tough starts offensively in the opening half of play. Turnovers and cold shooting plagued both squads, but a late run gave the Bulldogs a 31-21 lead heading into halftime.

The Bulldogs extended the lead early in the second half. Concordia scored eight straight points to open the half to take a 39-21 lead with just over 17 minutes remaining in the game. It took Concordia-Ann Arbor almost four minutes to score their first bucket of the second half. Concordia’s depth and defense continued to wear down the Cardinals, and the Bulldogs pulled away for the easy win.

Concordia was 28-of-57 from the field in the win for 49.1 percent. The Bulldogs went 8-of-20 from three point land for 40 percent and 15-of-20 at the foul line for 75 percent. The Bulldog defense forced CU-Ann Arbor into 27 turnovers in the game. The Cardinals went 17-of-23 at the charity stripe for 73.9 percent, but were 0-of-10 from behind the three point line in the loss.

Angela Kuca hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points to lead the way for the Bulldogs in the win. Raegan Broadie added 11, and Brittany Johnson scored eight off the bench. Stacy Scheer and Katie Rich scored seven points apiece in a balanced scoring attack for Concordia.

Hannah Sabol had a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way for Concordia-Ann Arbor. Kortni Elsworth added 10 points for the Cardinals.

Concordia will face Concordia University-Wisconsin in Saturday’s championship game. The Bulldogs will look to win the CIT for a third straight year. The tip is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Mequon.

Concordia wins CIT championship with 76-68 win over Concordia Wisconsin

The Concordia University women captured the CIT title for the third straight year with a 76-68 win over Concordia University Wisconsin on Saturday evening. It’s the 22nd CIT championship overall for the Bulldogs. Concordia improved to 16-8 on the year with the win, while the host Falcons dropped to 12-7 on the year with the loss.

The game remained tightly contested throughout much of the first half. The Bulldogs used an 18-7 run to close the half to take a 43-28 lead into halftime. Concordia was 15-of-25 from the field, while the Falcons connected on just 9-of-24 shots in the opening half of play.

Early in the second half, the Bulldogs created even more separation. Concordia led by as many as 23 on multiple occasions in the final 20 minutes. Concordia Wisconsin’s late rally attempt wasn’t enough, and the Bulldogs settled for the 76-68 victory.

Concordia was 26-of-57 from the field for 45.6 percent in the win. The Bulldogs were 6-of-19 from three point land for 31.6 percent and 18-of-25 at the charity stripe for 72 percent. The Bulldog defense forced Concordia Wisconsin into 20 turnovers on the night.

Stacy Scheer scored 14 points to lead the way for the Bulldogs in the win. Kristin Miller added 13 points and seven boards, and Katie Rich also reached double figures with 10 points. TaLisa Krejci and Angela Kuca scored eight points apiece in a balanced Concordia attack.

Concordia Wisconsin was 22-of-54 from the field for 40.7 percent. The Falcons hit 3-of-7 attempts from long range and were 21-of-26 from the foul line for 80.8 percent.

Pearl Wallace scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead CUW. Brittany Zietlow added 13 points and a game-high seven assists for the Falcons.

Late free throws give No. 1 Hastings College 67-65 win over Concordia

The No. 1 Hastings College women’s basketball team escaped Seward with a 67-65 win over Concordia on Wednesday evening. The Broncos improved to 22-3 overall and 12-1 in the GPAC with the win. Concordia slipped to 16-9 overall and 7-7 in the GPAC with the loss.

The Broncos were led by Rachel Isherwood’s 16 points, while Lindsay Ducey added a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds. Alicia Statler had 10 points, seven boards and seven blocks, and Becky Tesch chipped in with 10 points off the bench for Hastings.

Treva Nutter scored a game-high 19 points for the Bulldogs. Stacy Scheer and TaLisa Krejci added 10 points apiece for Concordia.

The visiting Broncos took control of the contest early on and grabbed a 15-4 lead with less than 14 minutes remaining in the first half. Concordia managed to hang around and used 14 points off Hastings College turnovers to claw back into the game. The Broncos took a 34-28 lead into the halftime break.

Hastings again seized momentum early in the second half. The Broncos scored the first seven points of the half to take a 41-28 lead with 16:45 left in the game. Concordia wouldn’t go away quietly, and the Bulldogs came all the way back to tie the game at 51-51 with eight minutes left in regulation.

The Broncos answered once again with an 8-1 run to take a 59-52 lead with just over six minutes remaining. Concordia again chipped away at the lead, and a layup by Kat Ommen pulled the Bulldogs within one at 65-64 with just over a minute remaining in the contest. Following three missed shots by Hastings College, Scheer was fouled with just 19 seconds to play. Scheer hit one of two foul shots to tie the game at 65-65.

Hastings College called a timeout to set up a final play. With just a few seconds remaining, Rachel Isherwood was fouled while driving to the basket. Isherwood hit both free throws to give the lead back to the Broncos at 67-65. The Bulldogs were unable to get a shot off before the buzzer, and Hastings held on for the dramatic win.

Hastings was 22-of-52 from the floor for 42.3 percent on the night. The Broncos were 5-of-10 from three point land and 18-of-23 at the foul line for 78.3 percent. Hastings held a 41-34 rebounding advantage as well as a 10-0 advantage in fast break points. The Broncos struggled with turnovers and totaled 23 for the game. However, Hastings also totaled eight steals and 10 blocked shots in the contest.

Concordia was 24-of-61 from the field for 39.3 percent. The Bulldogs connected on just 7-of-22 from behind the three point line for 31.8 percent. Free throw shooting also cost Concordia dearly, as the Bulldogs managed to hit just 10-of-20 from the charity stripe in the contest. Concordia had 24 points off Hastings turnovers and held a 28-15 advantage in bench points.

Concordia hosts Dakota Wesleyan University on Feb. 6. The tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Health, Human Performance and Athletic Center.

Concordia routs Dakota Wesleyan, 78-56

The Concordia University women’s basketball team dropped Dakota Wesleyan by the score of 78-56 on Saturday in Seward. The Bulldogs improved to 17-9 overall and 8-7 in GPAC play with the win. Dakota Wesleyan slipped to 8-19 overall and 4-11 in conference play with the loss.

Concordia never trailed in the contest. The Bulldogs led by as many as 13 in the opening half of play, but the visiting Tigers managed to hang around. Dakota Wesleyan’s Ashley Johnson connected on back-to-back 3-pointers in the closing minutes of the first half, and Concordia’s lead was cut to 43-36 at halftime.

Dakota Wesleyan pulled within five points on two separate occasions in the opening minutes of the first half. However, a 12-0 run by Concordia increased the Bulldog lead to 17 at 58-41 with just over 12 minutes left to play. Concordia led by as many as 24 down the stretch and cruised to the 78-56 win.

Concordia scored 38 points in the paint compared to 24 for the Tigers. Concordia also held a 24-18 advantage in points off turnovers and a 16-7 advantage in second chance points. The Bulldog bench also played a huge role in the win. Concordia’s bench outscored the Dakota Wesleyan bench 29-10 in the game.

The Bulldogs were 27-of-70 from the field for 41.4 percent in the win. Concordia connected on 8-of-23 attempts from deep for 34.8 percent and 12-of-14 attempts from the foul line for 85.7 percent.

Defensively, Concordia caused problems for Dakota Wesleyan throughout the game. DWU was just 18-of-54 from the field for 33.3 percent. The Tigers went just 5-of-19 from behind the three point line for 26.3 percent and 15-of-22 at the foul line for 68.2 percent. “Our defense really pushes our offense,” commented Concordia freshman Katie Rich. “The bench was really there for us tonight, and we just wanted to be aggressive and push each other.”

Rich led the way for the Bulldogs with 16 points and five rebounds. TaLisa Krejci added 11 points, while Kat Ommen delivered 10 points, five boards and three assists off the bench. Kristin Miller added nine points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Stacy Scheer and Amber Quinn poured in eight points apiece for the Bulldogs.

“I thought we came out with really good energy today,” said Drew Olson, head coach of the Bulldogs. “We matched their intensity, but then we kind of went through the motions for awhile. After halftime, our defense really picked up. Offensively, we’re starting to figure it out, and we passed the ball a lot better today.”

Allison Johnson scored a game-high 20 points for Dakota Wesleyan. Maggie Malloy added 12 points, and Ashley Johnson had 10 points and nine boards for the Tigers.

“We have three very important games left in the regular season,” said Olson. “We need to take care of business against Dana, and then we have a big one at Sioux Falls next weekend. We just need to take things a game at a time.”

Concordia hosts Dana College on Feb. 10. The tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Health, Human Performance and Athletic Center.

No. 25 Concordia runs past Dana College, 77-47

Concordia University, ranked No. 25 in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, cruised to an easy 77-47 women’s basketball win over Dana College on Wednesday evening in Seward. Concordia improved to 18-9 overall and 9-7 in the GPAC with the win. Dana College dropped to 3-21 overall and 1-14 in conference play with the loss.

The game was never in question, as Concordia jumped out to a huge lead in the opening half. The Bulldogs scored the first eight points of the ballgame and led by as many as 25 in the first 20 minutes. Concordia took a 45-21 lead into halftime. The Bulldogs scored 24 points in the paint and added 17 points off Dana College turnovers in the opening half. Concordia’s bench also held a 14-1 scoring advantage in the first half.

Concordia extended the lead early in the second half. The Bulldogs led by as many as 31 at 56-25 with 13:48 remaining in the contest. Dana continued to struggle against the pressure defense of the Bulldogs, and Concordia pulled away for the 77-47 victory.

“I thought we came out with good focus and energy tonight,” said Drew Olson, head coach of the Bulldogs. “Our press was very effective, and we shot it well early to build the big lead.”

Concordia hit 28-of-67 shots from the field for 41.8 percent on the night. The Bulldogs were 10-of-32 from three point land for 31.3 percent and 11-of-14 from the foul line for 78.6 percent. However, it was the Concordia defense which set the tone on Wednesday. Dana College was just 14-of-55 from the field for 25.5 percent. The Vikings connected on just 1-of-17 from behind the three point line and were 18-of-25 at the foul line for 72 percent. The Vikings committed 21 turnovers, and Concordia totaled 13 steals on the night.

Concordia finished with 34 points in the paint to go along with 27 points off Dana turnovers. The Concordia bench outscored the Dana bench 29-11, and the Bulldogs scored eight fast break points compared to just two for the visiting Vikings.

Katie Rich and TaLisa Krejci each scored 13 points to lead the way for Concordia. Stacy Scheer also reached double figures in scoring with 10 points to go along with a game-high four assists and four steals. Treva Nutter added nine points and three assists, while Kat Ommen delivered eight points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Raelene Buschow scored 13 points and pulled down nine boards for Dana College. Tricia Trotter added 10 for the Vikings.

Concordia travels to Sioux Falls on Saturday for a GPAC contest against the Cougars. Concordia and Sioux Falls are currently tied for fifth in the conference standings. “We’re really excited to play Sioux Falls,” commented Olson. “That’s a tough place to play, and I don’t think their record is indicative of how good they really are. It should be fun.”

No. 25 Concordia shuts down Sioux Falls, 48-38

Defense was the name of the game on Saturday as the No. 25 Concordia University women’s basketball team earned a 48-38 road win over the University of Sioux Falls. The Bulldogs improved to 19-9 overall and 10-7 in GPAC play with the win. The victory also moved Concordia into sole possession of fifth place in the conference standings. Sioux Falls dropped to 17-12 overall and 9-8 in conference play with the loss.

Concordia led from start to finish. Concordia’s pressure defense bothered the Cougars all afternoon. The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead, and Sioux Falls didn’t score a point for almost six minutes to start the game. The Cougars finally got on the board with two made free throws with 14:14 left in the opening half of play.

Concordia led by as many as eight in the first 20 minutes, but the Bulldogs led by just one (20-19) at halftime. Concordia hit 7-of-23 shots in the opening half for 30.4 percent. Sioux Falls made just 5-of-31 shots (0-of-13 from three point land) in the first 20 minutes for 16.1 percent.

The Bulldogs created some separation with a 16-0 run to start the second half. Sioux Falls continued to struggle mightily from the field. The Cougars suffered through another scoring draught to open the second half. USF didn’t score a point until there was just under 11 minutes remaining in the game. Even with the offensive struggles, USF got as close as eight on two separate occasions down the stretch. However, Concordia settled for the 48-38 win.

Angela Kuca hit four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 13 points to lead the way for the Bulldogs. Katie Rich and Treva Nutter each added nine points, and Kristin Miller grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for Concordia. For the game, Concordia was 15-of-51 from the field for 29.4 percent. The Bulldogs went 5-of-18 from deep for 27.8 percent and 13-of-18 from the foul line for 72.2 percent.

Elizabeth Hildreth scored 10 points for Sioux Falls. Jamey Hofer added eight points for the Cougars. USF was just 11-of-60 from the field for 18.3 percent and 3-of-23 from deep for 13 percent. Free throw shooting kept the Cougars in the ballgame, as USF was a perfect 13-of-13 from the charity stripe.

The No. 22 Concordia University women’s basketball team earned an impressive 85-39 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan on Wednesday evening in Seward. It was the final regular season game for Concordia. All 13 players scored, and the Bulldogs celebrated Senior Night in style with the huge win. Concordia improved to 20-9 overall and 11-7 in GPAC play with the win. Nebraska Wesleyan slipped to 7-17 overall and 4-13 in conference play with the loss.

Concordia led from start to finish, and the Bulldog defense was solid once again. The Bulldogs forced 36 Wesleyan turnovers and scored 41 points off of those turnovers. Concordia also totaled 50 points in the paint and held a 19-3 advantage in second chance points. The Bulldogs finished with 14 fast break points compared to just two for the Prairie Wolves, and the Concordia bench outscored the NWU bench 55-4 on the night.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 38-22 lead at halftime. Concordia had 22 points in the paint and went 17-of-31 from the field, while Wesleyan hit just 8-of-21 shots in the opening 20 minutes. The Bulldogs led by as many as 20 in the first half and settled for the 16-point halftime lead.

Concordia poured it on in the second half. At one point, the Bulldogs went on an 18-0 run. Every player on the Concordia roster played at least eight minutes in the contest, and the Bulldogs cruised to the easy win.

“Everyone on the team played extremely hard tonight,” said senior TaLisa Krejci. “We put a great game together tonight, and it was a lot of fun.”

Concordia connected on 36-of-75 shots overall for 48 percent. The Bulldogs were 8-of-30 from three point land and a perfect 5-of-5 from the foul line. The Bulldogs held a 39-32 rebounding advantage and totaled 21 steals on the night. Nebraska Wesleyan was just 16-of-47 from the field for 34 percent. The Prairie Wolves were 2-of-21 from deep and 5-of-6 at the foul line.

Kristin Miller scored a game-high 14 points for Concordia in the win. Brittany Johnson added 13 points and six steals, while Angela Kuca hit four 3-pointers and scored 12 off the bench for the Bulldogs. TaLisa Krejci dished out four assists and added five steals, and Katie Rich also handed out four assists on the night for Concordia in the win.

Mallory Shanahan scored 13 points and blocked three shots for Nebraska Wesleyan. Shea Rasmussen added 12 points for the Prairie Wolves.

Concordia will take part in the GPAC Tournament next week. Official pairings for the tournament will be released on Saturday evening.

“We have a lot of confidence going into the conference tournament,” commented Krejci. “A couple of losses earlier this season really turned things around for us. We’re playing really well right now, and hopefully we can carry that momentum into the postseason.”

Concordia University, ranked No. 21 in the final NAIA Top 25 Poll, cruised to a 79-54 win over Dana College in the first round of the GPAC Women’s Basketball Tournament on Tuesday evening. The Bulldogs improved to 21-9 on the year with the win, while Dana finished the season at 3-25.

Concordia used hot shooting from three point land to build a lead in the first half. Concordia led by as many as 20, hit 9-of-17 from deep and held a comfortable 46-30 lead heading into halftime. Concordia totaled 16 points off Dana turnovers, and the Bulldog bench outscored the Dana bench 17-7 in the opening half of play.

Concordia maintained a comfortable lead throughout the second half. The Bulldog defense put the clamps on Dana, as the Vikings went just 5-of-29 from the field in the final 20 minutes. The Bulldogs led by as many as 34 down the stretch and settled for the 79-54 win. Concordia scored 20 points in the paint and added 17 more points off Dana turnovers in the final 20 minutes.

“We played well in moments tonight,” commented Drew Olson, head coach of the Bulldogs. “We weren’t as sharp as we have been. We took a few days off. It was good to get a little rest, but I think we lost a little bit of our rhythm for tonight.”

Kristin Miller and Stacy Scheer each scored 13 points to lead the way for the Bulldogs. Miller went 5-of-6 from the field. Scheer added eight rebounds, five assists and four steals on the night. TaLisa Krejci, Treva Nutter and Kat Ommen all scored nine points, and Nutter dished out a game-high six assists. Angela Kuca added eight points for Concordia in the win.

“We were pretty excited to start the tournament,” said Concordia’s Kristin Miller. “We couldn’t look past Dana, but now we have to take a lot of fire and emotion into our next game. We know we can do it. We’ve done it before, and we’re confident.”

For the game, Concordia was 31-of-64 from the field for 48.4 percent. The Bulldogs went 11-of-26 from three point land for 42.3 percent and 6-of-11 at the foul line for 54.5 percent. Concordia totaled 21 assists on their 31 made field goals. The Bulldog defense totaled 19 steals and forced Dana into 30 turnovers on the night.

Dana was led by Tricia Trotter’s 16 points. Kalen Carlson added a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds off the bench, and Kayla Hofstetter delivered 12 points for the Vikings.

With the win, Concordia advances to play Morningside College at 7 p.m. on Thursday evening. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Sioux City. The Mustangs are the No. 4 seed in the GPAC Tournament and are currently ranked No. 11 in the NAIA Top 25 Poll. Earlier this season, Concordia earned a tough 60-52 win over Morningside in a game played at Seward.

“We played really well in that first game against Morningside,” commented Olson. We’re obviously going to need a similar effort on Thursday. They’re one of the better teams in our conference. Just like our team, they got off to a fairly slow start and have really turned it on. We’ll need to be focused, because they’ll be ready for us.”

No. 21 Concordia falls at No. 11 Morningside in quarterfinals of GPAC Tournament

Morningside College, ranked No. 11 in the final NAIA Top 25 Poll, defeated No. 21 Concordia by the score of 72-59 in the quarterfinals of the GPAC Women’s Basketball Tournament on Thursday evening. The Mustangs improved to 20-10 on the year with the win. Concordia dropped to 21-10 on the year with the loss.

The teams traded leads early on, but the host Mustangs held the lead for a majority of the first half. A 3-pointer by Laura Nelson gave Morningside a 34-24 lead heading into the halftime break. Concordia was just 6-of-26 from the field in the opening half of play.

Morningside created even more separation early in the second half. The Mustangs built the lead to 19 on two separate occasions. Concordia was unable to rally, and Morningside cruised to the 72-59 win.

For the game, Morningside was 22-of-58 from the field for 37.9 percent. The Mustangs were 12-of-30 from three point land for 40 percent and 16-of-22 at the foul line for 72.7 percent. Concordia was just 17-of-51 from the field for 33.3 percent. The Bulldogs were 6-of-21 from long range for 28.6 percent and 19-of-25 at the foul line for 76 percent.

Morningside held a 20-16 advantage in points in the paint and a 24-17 advantage in points off turnovers. The Mustangs totaled eight fast break points to just two for the Bulldogs, and both teams finished with nine second chance points on the night. The Morningside bench proved to be the difference. The Mustangs finished with 50 bench points compared to just 13 for the Bulldog bench.

Laura Nelson and Roni Miller provided the spark off the Morningside bench. Nelson scored 18 points, and Miller poured in 15 for the Mustangs. Shelby Beaudette added 10 points for Morningside.

Stacy Scheer scored 18 points to go along with nine rebounds and four assists for Concordia. Kristin Miller added a double-double of 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. TaLisa Krejci and Treva Nutter added nine points apiece for the Bulldogs.

Morningside advances to the semi-finals of the GPAC Tournament. Concordia now awaits word on a possible trip to the NAIA National Tournament. The College Fanz Sports Network will announce the NAIA Tournament selections on March 3 at 3 p.m.

Bulldogs bow out of NAIA National Tournament

Indiana Wesleyan 56, Concordia University 42

The Concordia University women’s basketball team suffered a 56-42 loss to Indiana Wesleyan on Wednesday evening in the first round of the NAIA Division II National Tournament. The Wildcats took control of the game in the first half, and the Bulldogs were unable to rally. Indiana Wesleyan advanced to the next round of the tournament and improved to 27-6 with the win. Concordia ended its season with a record of 21-11.

Concordia held the lead on multiple occasions early in the first half. However, the Bulldogs went ice cold from the field, and the Wildcats took full advantage. Indiana Wesleyan connected on 11-of-22 shots from the field and 5-of-10 shots from behind the three point line in the opening half.

Concordia, on the other hand, struggled to find the range. The Bulldogs were just 6-of-30 from the field overall and 0-of-6 from three point land in the first 20 minutes. Concordia, who averaged right around 70 points per game on the season, managed to score just 17 in the first half. Indiana Wesleyan took a commanding 33-17 lead into halftime.

“I think we came out a little flat and timid,” commented Concordia senior Stacy Scheer. “We didn’t have the intensity we needed early. We didn’t really get after it, and we just didn’t hit shots.”

The Indiana Wesleyan bench also held an 11-3 scoring advantage over Concordia in the opening half of play. Wesleyan’s Taylor Goshert, who came in averaging around two points per game, scored nine points in the first half to provide the spark off the Wildcat bench.

The offensive struggles continued for Concordia in the second half. Indiana Wesleyan hit just 6-of-20 shots from the field which left the door open for the Bulldogs. But Concordia was only 8-of-29 from the floor, and the Wildcats preserved the 56-42 win.

“It was a really bad night of shooting,” said Concordia head coach Drew Olson. “They played tough defense, but we helped them out with poor shot selection at times. I thought we did a decent job of getting in the lane, but we either didn’t finish or didn’t get the calls. It was a very physical game, maybe the most physical game we played this year.”

For the game, the Wildcats were 17-of-42 from the field for 40.5 percent. Indiana Wesleyan hit six 3-pointers on the night and was an impressive 16-of-19 at the foul line. Concordia was 14-of-59 from the floor for 23.7 percent. The Bulldogs were 1-of-10 from long range and 13-of-17 at the charity stripe.

Katie Rich scored a game-high 19 points for Concordia. Rich also added a team-high eight rebounds and a game-high four steals on the night. Stacy Scheer added 10 points and two steals. However, no other Concordia player scored more than four points on the night.

“We've grown so much as a team throughout the season,” remarked Scheer. “We had a lot of young players step up into some pretty big roles. I'm so proud to be a member of this team.”

Elaine Hessel had a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead the way for Indiana Wesleyan. Rachel Steinbarger also added 12 points, and LeAnn Douglas delivered 11 for the Wildcats.

“We had a great season,” noted Olson. “We’re proud to get to this point. Not too many people expected us to be here, but this team exceeded expectations. They really rallied together and simply found a way. It says a lot about these players and our program. It also says a lot about the tremendous leadership we had from our seniors.”

Scheer earns First Team All-GPAC honors

Concordia University had four players receive conference honors as the 2009-10 GPAC All-Conference women’s basketball teams were released Wednesday. Stacy Scheer was named First Team All-Conference. Katie Rich, Treva Nutter and Kristin Miller all earned Honorable Mention honors for the Bulldogs.

Scheer, a senior guard from Madison, leads Concordia with 12.1 points per game this year. She averages a team-high 22.9 minutes per game and also leads the team in assists (78) and steals (59). Scheer is one of the top defenders on the team and adds 4.5 rebounds per game this season.

“It is a well deserved honor for Stacy to be named First Team All-GPAC,” said Drew Olson, head coach of the Bulldogs. “That is an incredible list of players she is associated with, and she becomes a part of all the great Concordia players who have been selected. I’m proud of what she has done in her four years.”

Katie Rich has made an immediate impact for the Bulldogs in her freshman season. Rich, a guard from Tilden, averages 9.1 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game so far this year. She has also added 43 assists and 45 steals.

Treva Nutter has provided a huge spark off the bench for the Bulldogs this season. Nutter, a freshman guard from Thedford, averages 9.6 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. She averaged 10.4 points per game during conference play and is second on the team with 72 assists so far this year.

Kristin Miller, a junior forward from Jefferson City, Mo., averages 8.6 points per game and a team-high 5.7 rebounds per game this season. She also has 25 steals and a team-best 27 blocks for the Bulldogs.

“It’s nice to have Katie, Treva and Kristin also recognized as Honorable Mention,” commented Olson. “They are all great players. I think these selections say something about our team. We have such a balanced attack that any of our players could have been up for these awards. This is not just about individual recognition. It’s a statement about what our team has done.”

Concordia has earned an at-large bid to the 19th Annual State Farm-NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship, held March 10 - 16 at the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena in Sioux City. Official tournament brackets will be announced Wednesday afternoon on the College Fanz Sports Network.

Scheer earns Honorable Mention All-American honors

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics announced the 2010 Division II Women's Basketball All-America teams on Tuesday. Concordia University’s Stacy Scheer was an Honorable Mention selection.

Scheer, a senior guard from Madison, helped lead the Bulldogs to a 21-11 record and a third straight trip to the NAIA National Tournament. She was a First Team All-GPAC selection and was also named a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete for the third straight year.

Scheer averaged a team-best 12.1 points per game for the Bulldogs in the 2009-10 season. She also finished with team-highs in assists (78) and steals (61). Scheer averaged 22.4 minutes per game to lead the team and added 4.5 rebounds per game.

“I am really excited for Stacy,” commented Drew Olson, head coach of the Bulldogs. “She is such a fun person and has truly earned a great honor. She earned it through constant hours shooting in the gym and working on her game. She became quite a player, and we will miss her. I am happy to have been her coach and see her develop over her four years.”

Four Bulldogs honored by the Omaha World Herald

Concordia University senior Stacy Scheer picked up another postseason honor over the weekend, as she was selected to the Omaha World Herald’s NAIA All-Nebraska First Team. Treva Nutter, Katie Rich and Kristin Miller were Honorable Mention selections.

The NAIA All-Nebraska First Team selection is the latest recognition for Scheer, who led the Bulldogs to their third straight NAIA National Tournament appearance this season. She led the team in scoring, assists and steals in 2009-10. Scheer was a First Team All-Conference performer and was also named as a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete.

Treva Nutter and Katie Rich made an immediate impact for the Bulldogs in 2009-10. Both players averaged over nine points per game and were Honorable Mention All-Conference performers. Kristin Miller had a solid junior season for the Bulldogs. Miller was also an Honorable Mention All-Conference selection. She averaged over eight points per game and led the team in rebounding and blocked shots this season.

Concordia finished the 2009-10 season with a 21-11 record. The Bulldogs were 11-7 in the highly competitive GPAC conference.

Concordia earns top-10 finish in Academic Top 25

The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association has announced its winners for the 2009-10 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll. This award honors teams throughout the nation that carry the highest grade point averages for the entire season. Concordia finished sixth in this year’s poll.

Concordia finished with a team grade point average of 3.532. Dana College (3.727) was the only Great Plains Athletic Conference school to finish ahead of the Bulldogs in the poll. Concordia continues to excel in the classroom, as the women’s basketball team has finished first in the poll seven times since the 1999-00 season. Last year, Concordia finished fourth.

Stacy Scheer, Kristin Miller, Amber Quinn and Kourtney Rahder were all named to the 2010 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes list to lead the way for Concordia this year. “I am always impressed with our players’ work ethic on the floor, but what they do in the classroom is far more important,” said Concordia head coach Drew Olson. “Year after year, we continue to have incredible academic success.”

Concordia went 21-11 overall and 11-7 in the GPAC this past season. The Bulldogs qualified for the NAIA National Tournament for a third straight year.
