SEWARD, Neb. – The Bulldogs took nine golfers to their first tournament of the 2023-24 golf season as they wrapped up the Mount Marty Invite on Friday (Sept. 1). The women were led by Emery Custer, as the team finished ninth out of 18 teams with a final score of 353-348-701 in the two round golf showdown. The two rounds were played in Yankton, S.D. at the Fox Run Golf Course.
This proved to be a positive showing for Concordia as they averaged almost nine strokes lower than their 18-hole average last year finishing at a 350.5 combined score and 23 strokes better than last season. Head coach Brett Muller had this to say about the invite.
“We definitely have a couple new players who can contribute and help us in our top five. The last two days we didn’t play as well as we would have liked, but we’ll continue to work hard next week and be ready for the Briar Cliff Invite. It was really hot the last two days and pretty breezy, which we hadn’t really had the last couple weeks.”
Custer, a sophomore from Broken Bow, Neb., wasn’t on the varsity roster for the opening Mount Marty Invite but now finished in front for the Bulldogs with a two round 87-84-171 finish highlighted by her second day birdie on the eighth hole. Maddie Lewis (86-91-176), an athlete who switched to golf from volleyball, had an impressive finish on day one having the best 18-hole finish with 86 strokes. Logan Eschliman (90-85-175) finished with her second best round of her career with a frustrating eighteenth hole that ruined her potential career best. Others committing top scores featured Mya Nurse (91-88-179) and Sarah Wilson (90-104-194) who scored her career low (90) on day 1 of the tournament.
The second grouping of the tournament shot a 425-409-834 through two rounds.
