Three Bulldogs shoot in 80s on day one of Nebraska Intercollegiate

HASTINGS, Neb. – On a near perfect fall day, the Concordia University Women’s Golf team shot below its season average while going up against some of the best competition the state of Nebraska has to offer. Following Friday (Oct. 4)’s first round of the Nebraska Intercollegiate, the Bulldogs sit in fifth place (out of seven) on the strength of three individual scores in the 80s. Juniors Emery Custer and Maddie Lewis are within one stroke of each other heading into day two of the event staged at Lochland Country Club in Hastings, Neb.

Head Coach Brett Muller’s squad shot a score of 349 on Friday, putting it 42 strokes off the stellar 307 turned in by tournament leader Bellevue University. The top four teams all shot 324 or lower.

The team’s most consistent performer all fall, Custer shot an 11-over-par 83 on Friday and is tied for 16th place in the field of 35 golfers. The Broken Bow, Neb., native’s stated goal was to place inside the top 10 after finishing the 2023 Nebraska Intercollegiate in 13th place. Custer sits just two strokes out of the current top 10 leaderboard. Meanwhile, teammate Maddie Lewis of Treynor, Iowa, shot a season low 84 on Friday and is tied for 20th place.

The Bulldog grouping of five was rounded out by freshman Savannah McFalls (87; 23rd) and seniors Jennifer Gillotti (95; T-28th) and Sarah Wilson (97; 30th). Wilson was coming off a career low round of 89 at the Siouxland Invite. The 87 for McFalls represented a new career best.

In the Nebraska Intercollegiate team standings, Concordia is situated above Hastings (362) and Midland (439). The field is made up of five NAIA programs (four GPAC) and two NCAA Division II squads.
