Outlook
Another season of Concordia women’s golf saw the program establish the latest clear No. 1 atop the lineup. Crete native Murphy Sears elevated her game while placing herself among the GPAC’s elite. With GPAC champion Amy Ahlers having graduated in 2017, Sears crept from out of the shadows of an all-time great and proved she could handle the pressure that comes with the top spot.
Winner of an NAIA National Golfer of the Week award this past spring, Sears and her expected improvement provide optimism heading into this fall. The hope is to lower the scores of the grouping behind her in the lineup.
“Both are very good players,” said eighth-year head coach Brett Muller when asked to compare Sears to Ahlers. “They probably will go down as two of the all-time greats in the women’s program. I think it will really help Murphy this year having Kendra Placke coming in. She’ll be very similar to what Amy had, having another great player to practice beside her. She should be able to push her and make her better.”
Indeed, Muller hit the recruiting trail looking for instant impact newcomers that will ideally help the Bulldogs move up from their 10th-place GPAC finish last season. The program hit it big with the addition of Placke, a Seward High School product with plenty of college suitors. The former state and district champion will make for a legitimate one-two punch of local talent near the top of the lineup.
Sears and Placke already had developed a cordial relationship going back to their days competing against each other in high school. Now they’ll compete as teammates to see which one can go lower each time out.
“I knew Kendra in high school so we go way back,” Sears said. “It was fun playing with her. A lot of local people don’t want to stay in the same town, which is kind of why I came here. I didn’t really want to stay in Crete. I guess Kendra just felt like she fit in here. I think she’ll be a good addition to the team.”
The conversation about exciting newcomers may start with Placke, but it certainly doesn’t end there. Muller expects transfer Andrea Peterson (formerly of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn.) and freshmen DJ Bokelman and Britney Jepsen to make serious bids for spots in the varsity lineup. The Bulldogs hope to get Peterson (91.89 average as a freshmen) healthy and see quick development from Bockelman (Gering, Neb.) and Jepsen (Richardson, Texas).
Their will help will be needed in order to cut down on last season’s team scoring average of 376.64. Muller would be happy to see more scores like the 2017-18 season low of 343 that came at the College of Saint Mary/Midland Invite back in April. Says Muller, “I think the majority of the newcomers definitely have a chance to come in and play right away. Our lineup could be significantly different in the top five. On the women’s side, we’ll be deeper than we have been.”
The returning regulars other than Sears include juniors Payton DeMers-Sahling and Paighton Barbre and senior Madison Pitsch. DeMers-Sahling displayed her potential by shooting an 84 as part of that solid team effort at the CSM/Midland Invite.
With new talent on board, Sears sees reason to believe Concordia can make a lot more noise this season from a team perspective.
“Practice should be pretty competitive overall,” Sears said. “I think that will be good. When we get to meets we should be top five every one, even when GPAC comes around. Hopefully we can do that.”
Sears and her teammates are also look forward to this coming March when the team has a spring break trip planned. Details are still being worked out on a destination. Sears is thinking somewhere warm and tropical.
However, the Bulldogs will remain within the GPAC footprint for their first meet of 2018-19. They will tee off the season with the two-day Mount Marty College Invite in Yankton, S.D., Aug. 30-31. The tournament will provide an opportunity to reunite with former graduate assistant Logan Wagner, now the Lancer head women’s golf coach.
Placke shoots 76 in collegiate debut
Aug. 30, 2018
YANKTON, S.D. – Seward High School product Kendra Placke entered the Concordia University women’s golf program with much acclaim. She began to back up those expectations in Thursday (Aug. 30)’s opening round of the 2018-19 season. Her 76 paced the squad on day one of the Mount Marty College Invite in Yankton, S.D.
As a team, head coach Brett Muller’s group carded a 344, well below the 2017-18 team scoring average of 376.6. The addition of Placke and the return of junior Murphy Sears signal and improved new squad. Muller called it a “great first round” but noted that the team score could have been even lower with a better putting performance.
With 18 holes left to be played on Friday, the Bulldogs sit in a tie for third place amongst the field of 11 teams (exclusively GPAC schools) in Yankton. Placke sits tied for second place, two strokes out of first, on the individual leaderboard. Her day included an eagle on hole 3. Not too far behind is Sears, the squad’s top golfer in 2017-18. She shot an 80, positioning her in sixth place.
Concordia’s lineup also included newcomers in freshmen Britney Jepsen (91) and DJ Bokelman (97) as well as junior Paighton Barbre (97). Senior Madison Pitsch competed individually and shot a 106. A total of 65 golfers make up the Mount Marty Invite.
Thursday’s round took place at Fox Run Golf Course. On day two, action will shift to Hillcrest Country Club in Yankton.
Placke, Sears place top five at Midland Invite
Sep. 10, 2018
FREMONT, Neb. – The field of 60 golfers could not have asked for a nicer day for Monday (Sept. 10)’s Midland Fall Invite staged at Fremont Golf Club. Freshman Kendra Placke and junior Murphy Sears took advantage by both placing inside the top five on the individual leaderboard. Collectively, the Concordia University women’s golf team placed seventh out of nine squads – eight of which were GPAC schools.
The 371 carded by eighth-year head coach Brett Muller’s group represented a significant improvement from the 390 turned in on the second day of the Bulldogs’ season opening tournament.
The Seward High School product Placke has been the team’s top golfer through three rounds. She’s earned a top five finish at both of her first two collegiate tournaments. Her nine-over-par 82 on Monday allowed for a third-place finish that put her three strokes off the event’s medalist. Placke recorded 10 pars and one birdie in her latest round. Meanwhile, Sears was hot on her heels with an 83 (tied for fourth place). The Crete native parred seven times and birdied once.
Four others represented Concordia at the Midland Invite: sophomore Andrea Peterson (101; T-37th), freshman Britney Jepsen (105; T-41st), junior Paighton Barbre (107; T-43rd) and senior Madison Pitsch (113; 52nd). In terms of season average, Jepsen has been the team’s No. 3 golfer behind Placke and Sears.
Up next is the Lila Frommelt Invite hosted by Briar Cliff on Friday and Saturday. Both rounds will unfold at Two Rivers Golf Course in North Sioux City, S.D.
Bulldogs sit seventh after day one at Lila Frommelt Classic
Sep. 14, 2018
NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. – Many teams in the field at the Lila Frommelt Fall Classic went low on the opening day of the event, staged at Two Rivers Golf Club in North Sioux City, S.D., on Friday (Sept. 14). For the Concordia University women’s golf team, the 348 it carded represented a 23-stroke improvement from its most recent round. That score puts the Bulldogs in seventh place among the 14 competing squads at Two Rivers
Eighth-year head coach Brett Muller’s bunch is the midst of its third event so far this fall. The 348 was just off the team’s season low of 344 turned in on Aug. 30.
To this point, freshman Kendra Placke has emerged as Concordia’s No. 1. She shot an 81 (tied for 15th place out of 82 golfers) on Friday, a score right at her early collegiate average. Returning All-GPAC performer Murphy Sears and sophomore Andrew Peterson came in next. They both shot an 86, locking them up for 34th place on the individual leaderboard. The 86 was a huge upgrade from the 101 Peterson shot at the Midland Invite.
Rounding out Concordia’s efforts was freshman Britney Jepsen (95; 61st) and seniors Madison Pitsch (96; T-62nd) and Paighton Barbre (100; T-69th).
The field at the Lila Frommelt Classic includes a host of GPAC schools as well as other NAIA institutions such as William Penn University (Iowa) and Waldorf University (Iowa), NCAA Division III Buena Vista University (Iowa) as well as Iowa Lakes Community College.
The second and final day of the Lila Frommelt Invite is coming up on Saturday. The action will continue from Two Rivers.
Placke, Bulldogs shoot season best on final day of Lila Frommelt Classic
Sep. 15, 2018
NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. – While playing the same course it navigated a day earlier, the Concordia University women’s golf team improved its score by nine strokes with a season best 339. Individually, freshman Kendra Placke continues to shine. She again claimed a top 10 finish while leading the Bulldogs at the two-day Lila Frommelt Classic that concluded on Saturday (Sept. 15).
Eighth-year head coach Brett Muller’s squad shot a 36-hole score of 348-339–687, placing eighth amongst the 13 squads that competed on both days of the classic.
Placke has placed inside the top 10 of each of the three collegiate tournaments of her career. After notching place finishes of fourth at the Mount Marty Invite and third at the Midland Invite, Placke placed eighth at the Lila Frommelt Classic by turning in a score of 81-77–158 on the par 71 course at Two Rivers Golf Club. Placke’s 77 was one stroke off her career best 76 carded on the opening day of the Mount Marty Invite. The Seward High School product’s 80.60 scoring average ranks best on the team.
Five teammates joined Placke in North Sioux City, S.D. Junior Murphy Sears cut four strokes off her Thursday round and placed in a tie for 28th (86-82–168) out of 82 golfers. The rest of Concordia’s competitors were sophomore Andrea Peterson (86-89–175; 41st), freshman Britney Jepsen (95-91–186; 56th) and seniors Madison Pitsch (96-94–190; 63rd) and Paighton Barbre (100-100–200; 70th). Five of the six Bulldogs at the meet either equaled or improved their score on the second day.
Not only was the team’s 339 the best round it has had so far this season, it also represents a lower total than any score turned in by Concordia throughout the 2017-18 season.
Next up is the Matthew Goette Classic set for Wednesday, Sept. 26. The one-day tournament will be staged at Tiburon Golf Club in Omaha, Neb.
Placke places as runner up at Goette Invitational
Sep. 26, 2018
OMAHA, Neb. – In its first action since the Lila Frommelt Classic (Sept. 14-15), the Concordia University women’s golf team got another stellar outing from freshman Kendra Placke. As a team, the Bulldogs shot a 376 and placed seventh out of 10 teams at the Matthew Goette Fall Invitational hosted by College of Saint Mary on Wednesday (Sept. 26). The tournament took place at Tiburon Golf Club in Omaha, Neb.
Eighth-year head coach Brett Muller’s squad came up shy of its season average, which had been 358.4 entering Wednesday’s round. The latest performance resulted in a 376 that put Concordia above Doane, Peru State College and Hastings in the team standings.
A Seward High School product and former state champion, Placke has now placed in the top 10 at each of the first four tournaments of her collegiate career. Her nine-over-par 81 allowed her to place as the Goette Invite runner up, three strokes off the event champion. Placke’s total was right in line with her season average of 80.60.
Junior Murphy Sears carded an uncharacteristically high 92 (+20) as the No. 2 golfer in the Bulldog lineup. She placed in a tie for 17th amongst the field of 60 golfers at Tiburon. Four others represented Concordia at the Goette Invite: freshman DJ Bokelman (101; 37th), junior Paighton Barbre (102; T-38th), freshman Britney Jepsen (104; 42nd) and senior Madison Pitsch (105; 43rd).
Through four tournaments, Placke has recorded place finishes of fourth (Mount Marty Invite), third (Midland Invite), eighth (Lila Frommelt Classic) and second (Goette Classic), respectively. Thus far, her best round was her very first collegiate round when she carded a four-over-par 76 at the Mount Marty Invite.
Two events remain on the schedule for this fall. The Bulldogs will compete in the GPAC championships next Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 1-2) at The Bluffs in Vermillion, S.D. They will wrap up the fall at the Nebraska Intercollegiate (Oct. 15-16).
Placke tops GPAC; Bulldogs in third after day one
Oct. 1, 2018
VERMILLION, S.D. – The top four in the Concordia University women’s golf all shot 90 or lower in the opening round of the 2018-19 GPAC Women’s Golf Championships on Monday (Oct. 1). Led by freshman Kendra Placke, the Bulldogs turned in a season low 18-hole team total of 334 while in competition at The Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion, S.D.
Eighth-year head coach Brett Muller’s squad sits in third place with 54 holes of GPAC action still to be contested. Individually, Placke was the story of Monday’s round. She shot a three-over-par 75 and is in first place (one stroke better than three players who shot a 76).
“Last night at our team meeting we set a goal of 336 coming into day one,” Muller said. “I thought in the practice round the course set up pretty well for us. We played well and knew that if we played like that today we’d be in that mix. Obviously it’s extremely tight with six schools within 11 shots of second place. We’re going to have to come out and play well tomorrow.”
Placke even outdid her career best of a four-over-par 76 at the Mount Marty Invite (Aug. 30). She entered this event having placed inside the top 10 of each of the first four tournaments of her collegiate career. The 75 Placke shot on Monday is a lower round than any of the four that program standard setting Amy Ahlers turned in during her conference championship run in 2016-17.
“Obviously Kendra is a great competitor,” Muller said. “Her distance is definitely the strength of her game. She was able to get in some positions that set herself up for some birdies. She’s hitting the driver well. Top to bottom, I thought we putted much better and that really showed in our team score.”
A top 10 placer in the GPAC last season, junior Murphy Sears (two-time all-conference) carded an 83, putting her 14th on the conference leaderboard. Sears is the lone returner in Concordia’s GPAC lineup. The rest of the group on Monday included freshman DJ Bokelman (86; T-25th), sophomore Andrea Peterson (90; T-38th) and freshman Britney Jepsen (101; T48th). There are 59 golfers in the GPAC field. The 86 from Bokelman was critical in separating the Bulldogs from other squads at the No. 3 position in the lineup.
In the team race, the Bulldogs are only one stroke behind second place Dakota Wesleyan (333). Morningside is on top after shooting an impressive 310. Concordia will need to put together another good round on Tuesday to keep in front of Briar Cliff (336), Jamestown (336), Northwestern (337) and Mount Marty (344). The Bulldogs have their sights set on making a big leap forward after placing 10th in the conference in 2017-18.
The GPAC championships will continue from Vermillion, S.D., on Tuesday. The first tee time for the Bulldogs will be at 10:40 a.m. Two rounds of conference championship play will also take place April 26-27 at York Country Club in York, Neb. For live scoring during Tuesday’s round, click HERE.
Sears joins Placke in top 10 halfway through GPAC championships
Oct. 2, 2018
VERMILLION, S.D. – On the second day of the GPAC Women’s Golf Championships, the Concordia University women’s golf team turned in a round very similar to their first. Though the Bulldogs slipped a few places in the team standings down to sixth, just 17 strokes separate them from second place. They will enter the spring portion of the conference championships with a two-round score of 334-338–672. The first 36 holes took place at The Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion, S.D., on Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 1-2).
In order for eighth-year head coach Brett Muller’s squad to maximize its potential, it needs the one-two punch of freshman Kendra Placke and junior Murphy Sears to perform like stars. So far so good. Both players currently hold down top-10 placements within the GPAC.
“This was much more like I envisioned our season being like in terms of team scoring,” Muller said. “We knew coming into the day we had to play well with how tightly packed the teams were in the standings. Murphy really played well today and got some confidence back and Kendra played better than what her score showed.
“It’s great when you can have two in the top 10. We’re definitely counting on Murphy and Kendra to be our leaders.”
Placke had the entire field looking up at her after she carded a three-over-par 75 in Monday’s round. She’s now tied for fourth in the conference after shooting a 78 on Tuesday. Placke is +9 for the tournament (75-78–153). The Seward High School product has a teammate keeping her company inside the top 10. Sears chopped eight strokes off her Monday round to move up from 14th to eighth place (83-75–158). That’s exactly where Sears finished her 2017-18 sophomore campaign. Sears’ 75 was just two strokes off a career low.
The remainder of the lineup includes three newcomers, led by sophomore Andrea Peterson, a transfer from Concordia College of Moorhead, Minn. Peterson has turned in back-to-back 90s this week and is in 39th place. Rounding out the lineup are freshmen DJ Bokelman (86-96–182; 42nd) and Britney Jepsen (101-95–196; T-47th).
Based on this fall’s results, the Bulldogs have saved their best for the right time. With its team total of 334-338–672 (+96), Concordia has turned in this season’s top two rounds during GPAC championship play. The previous season best was a 339 in the second round of the Lila Frommelt Classic. The Bulldogs’ 672 GPAC total is not far behind the teams directly in front of them: Dakota Wesleyan (658), Northwestern (665) and Briar Cliff (670).
Only one event remains on the fall schedule. The Bulldogs now look forward to the Nebraska Intercollegiate (Oct. 15-16), which is nearly two weeks away. The event will take place at Meadowlark Golf Course in Kearney, Neb.
Women's golf opens up spring season in Lake Mary
Mar. 5, 2019
LAKE MARY, Fla. – The weather in Nebraska had not yet allowed the Concordia women’s golf program to navigate an actual practice round this February. A spring break getaway is just what the Bulldogs needed. They opened up their spring season on Tuesday (March 5) as part of the Seminole State Spring Break Invitational at Timacuan Golf and Country Club in Lake Mary, Fla., just north of Orlando. The invite is a 36-hole event.
The field is a strong one in Lake Mary. The field includes host Seminal State College along with Detroit Mercy, Eastern Florida State, Kaiser, Florida Atlantic, Johnson & Wales and Southern Indiana. Unfortunately for the field of 46 individuals, they were greeted by rain and chilly temperatures at the start of the round.
Head coach Brett Muller’s squad carded a team score of 393, much higher than the team fall average of 355.0.
“You could definitely tell we haven’t been outside yet,” Muller said. “It showed in our short game. We gave away more shots than normal around the greens and didn’t putt very well. We definitely have room to improve tomorrow.”
Conditions were actually more favorable during Monday’s practice round at Timacuan. When it counted on Tuesday, freshman Kendra Placke topped the team with a 90. She was followed in the lineup by Murphy Sears (94), Britney Jepsen (100), Paighton Barbre (109) and DJ Bokelman (111). Placke is currently in 34th place individually.
At the conclusion of the fall, Muller’s squad sat in sixth place in the GPAC standings. The top team score so far in 2018-19 was a 334 carded at the first round of the conference championships. Placke and Sears both shot one 75 apiece at the GPAC championships for a team individual season low.
The action is set to get started at 8 a.m. EST from Timacuan on Wednesday for the second and final round of the event.
Placke, Dawgs make big improvements in round two of spring break tourney
Mar. 6, 2019
LAKE MARY, Fla. – All five Bulldogs improved their scores on the second and final day of the Seminole State Spring Break Invite, which was staged at Timacuan Golf and Country Club in Lake Mary, Fla., on Tuesday and Wednesday (March 5-6). It marked the first event of the spring season for head coach Brett Muller’s Concordia University women’s golf squad.
The Bulldogs turned in a two day total of 393-362–755 (+179). They were surrounded by a strong field that included host Seminole State College in addition to Detroit Mercy, Florida Atlantic, Eastern Florida State, Johnson & Wales (Fla.), Keiser and Southern Indiana. Forty-four individuals completed both rounds of the event.
“We have definitely improved every day we’ve been here, from the practice round to yesterday and from yesterday to today,” Muller said. “We just had to get back into the routine of playing golf again and competing.
“Kendra (Placke) got off to a great start. She started on hole 16 and ended up shooting one under on the front nine. She was extremely disappointed with her score yesterday. She was able to stay out of trouble, which was what hurt her yesterday.”
Currently holding down a top five position in the conference race, freshman Kendra Placke made a nice move on Wednesday by shooting five-over-par 76 at Timacuan. That score represented a 14-stroke improvement as compared to Tuesday’s round and moved Placke (90-76–166) all the way from 34th to a finish of 21st on the final Seminole State Invite standings. The Seward High School product entered the spring with a team low scoring average of 79.6.
The remainder of Muller’s lineup included junior Murphy Sears (94-89–183; 33rd), freshman Britney Jepsen (100-94–194; 38th), junior Paighton Barbre (109-103 – 212; 41st) and freshman DJ Bokelman (111-110–221; 44th).
Spring break trips have become a more regular occurrence for the Bulldog golf program. It was the women’s turn this season after the men visited Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Ala., in 2018. The women participated in a practice round in Lake Mary on Monday before teeing off for real on Tuesday.
The team will leave Florida on Friday morning. The Bulldogs will be in attendance at the Arnold Palmer Invite on Thursday as the spring break week continues.
The Seminole State Spring Break Invite marked Concordia’s first action since play two rounds of GPAC championship golf, Oct. 1-2. Next up on the schedule is the University of Nebraska-Kearney Invitational at Awarii Dunes in Kearney, Neb., March 23-24.

SEWARD, Neb. – Eleven different institutions will be represented on Thursday when the Concordia Spring Invitational gets underway with a 12 p.m. CT shotgun start from Highlands Golf Course in Lincoln, Neb. The tournament was originally scheduled to be a two-day, 36-hole event, but Friday’s round was canceled due to expected inclement weather. This will mark the first home event of the 2018-19 season for either the Concordia men’s or women’s golf programs.

Head coach Brett Muller’s women’s squad got things started this spring at the Seminole State Spring Break Invite in Lake Mary, Fla., March 5-6. After a rough first day, the Bulldogs improved significantly and turned in a two-round score of 393-362–755. Freshman Kendra Placke led the way for Concordia with her 76 (+4) on day two representing the individual highlight of the event from a Bulldog perspective. The lineup also included junior Murphy Sears, freshman Britney Jepsen, junior Paighton Barbre and freshman DJ Bokelman.
Through 10 rounds in 2018-19, Concordia has produced an average round of 359.5 with a season low of 334 turned in at the first round of the GPAC championships. Each of the top 13 individual rounds put forward by the Bulldogs have come from either Placke or Sears. Both carded a three-over-par 75 on separate occasions back in the fall. In the GPAC standings, Concordia is currently sixth (334-338–672) as a team. Placke (75-78–153; T-4th) and Sears (83-75–158; 8th) both sit inside the top 10 on the conference individual leaderboard.
The field at the Concordia Invite will include runaway GPAC leader Morningside, which has five individuals all in the top 10 of the conference leaderboard. Laia Badosa is tied for first in the conference. As far as nonconference opposition on Thursday, Bellevue University’s program has a strong reputation. The Bruins are fresh off a tournament title at the Eagle Spring Golf Classic that saw them shoot a 319.
Current weather conditions call for temperatures in the low 50s with winds out of the north around 12 miles per hour at the time the tournament gets started on Thursday. Chance of precipitation is about 25 percent.
Following the Concordia Invite, the Bulldog women’s golf team is scheduled to return to action on April 11 with the Kaitlyn Erickson Invitational hosted by Doane at Wilderness Ridge Golf Club in Lincoln.
Concordia-Mount Marty Cup goes to Lancers
Apr. 14, 2019
YORK, Neb. – In a head-to-head competition originally scheduled for this past Friday, the Concordia University women’s golf team met up with GPAC rival Mount Marty in the Concordia-Mount Marty Cup on Sunday (April 14). The event was staged at York Country Club, the site of the upcoming spring GPAC championships.
Head coach Brett Muller’s squad trailed 3.5 to 1.5 after the first wave of action in York. The Bulldogs then made up some ground on the second wave, just not enough to come all the way back. Wins on the second wave were produced by freshmen Britney Jepsen and Kendra Placke and junior Murphy Sears.
Unfortunately, a significant portion of the spring season for Concordia has been wiped out by inclement weather. Sunday marked the team’s first action since hosting the Concordia Spring Invitational on March 28 when it broke a program single round record by shooting a 332.
The GPAC championships are up next. They will be played in York, April 26-27. Two rounds were also played back in the fall. The Bulldogs are currently in sixth place (334-338–672). Both Placke (T-4th) and Sears (8th) are in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard.
