Outlook

Over the summer, program all-time great Amy (Ahlers) Allgood was officially announced as a Concordia Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2023 inductee. Perhaps the 2023-24 Concordia University Women’s Golf team can find inspiration in the type of student-athlete Amy showcased during her career from 2013-17. The current Bulldogs are in the process of retooling a roster that includes additions from other Concordia athletic programs. At the top of the lineup, Emery Custer looks forward to year two in a collegiate career just beginning to take off.

As Brett Muller enters his 13th season as head coach, he has hopes that the returners and group of newcomers will combine to move the Bulldogs up the ladder within the GPAC and slash the team’s 2022-23 scoring average of 359.1. The fall will help set the tone for the conference tournament in the spring.

“It’s changed a little in our preparation,” Muller said. “We have to be our best at the end of the spring season. We put a little more emphasis on the spring, but the fall still matters. We’re really jockeying for position in the fall and trying to gain confidence heading into the spring. We’re trying to push the weather in the spring and make sure we’re ready to go. Spring golf in the Midwest isn’t always the best weather, as we found out last spring. We have to be ready to go.”

Concordia wound up in 10th place in the GPAC this past spring following the graduation of Kendra Placke. The program is certainly capable of competing near the top of the conference as it did in 2019-20 and 2020-21 when it placed third in back-to-back seasons. The presence of the sophomore Custer from Broken Bow, Neb., is a good place to start. She was named the GPAC Newcomer of the Year while carding an average score of 87.3 this past season. Custer, Mya Nurse, Logan Eschliman and Sarah Wilson are lineup regulars who return from a year ago.

Custer turned in the 2022-23 team’s lowest scoring average at 87.3. A Lincoln Lutheran High School alum, Eschliman chose to use her fifth (‘COVID year’) of eligibility and will strength a deeper roster. Her decision helped lessen the blow from the graduation of Lauren Havlat, a mainstay in the lineup during her four-year Concordia career. This past season, Nurse carded a score as low as 80 and Eschliman posted an 83 in showing their capabilities.

Says Eschliman, “It’ll be good this year. We have two transfers from other sports and both played a lot of high school golf. They’ll be assets to the team this year. I think our freshmen will help us as they grow. I guess I kind of came back to make a statement, so I want to improve myself from the last four years and hopefully be better for the team. I’d like to help us move up in the standings.”

The two Bulldogs Eschliman is referring to are Jennifer Gillotti (former softball player) and Maddie Lewis (former volleyball player). Lewis earned all-state accolades as a senior at Treynor High School while Gillotti played all four years in high school and was a two-time all-conference performer. The roster also features sophomore Ericka Kroeker and freshmen Abigail Kollbaum and Emma McCoy.

If Custer takes a step forward, everything should fit into place nicely. One of the highlights of her freshman campaign was a third-place claim at the College of Saint Mary Spring Classic. Custer placed 25th in the GPAC. Said Muller, “Emery is definitely someone who can lead us on the course. She’s a great competitor and has very high standards for herself. Sometimes she gets a little down on herself because she expects a lot of herself.”

Eschliman is pursuing her MBA as she takes advantage of her opportunity. She says her decision first started out a joke – and then it became reality. Muller is glad to have that experience to help carry along the younger golfers on the roster.

“Logan will provide experience for us on the women’s side,” Muller said. “She has played in the top five in a lot of her collegiate rounds and understands what college golf is all about. She’s really worked hard this summer. Mya had a solid year for us as well. It’s nice to have two returners like that who understand what the GPAC and Concordia Golf looks like.”

The fall season opens the door for the Bulldogs to try to chip away at some of the GPAC competition that placed in front of it in the spring of 2023. The defending GPAC champion is Briar Cliff, which knocked Morningside off its perch. As for Concordia, Eschliman says she hopes the team can consistently compete for top-three finishes at tournaments.

Muller will get an early indication at how much his squad has improved when the Mount Marty Invite unfolds on Aug. 31-Sept. 1. Counting JV events, there will be six tournaments on the fall slate. The spring 2024 schedule will be announced at a later date.

“It’s always nice to play some local events, play GPAC competition and figure out how you stack up with them,” Muller said. “It’s nice to get more regionally based and play some of the top schools in the region. You get to see where you fit in nationally and see where you need to improve. The schedule changes a little bit each year, but we’re always looking to find a competitive schedule.”

The 2023-24 women’s golf schedule can be found HERE. The fall season will run through the Nebraska Intercollegiate on Oct. 6-7.

This proved to be a positive showing for Concordia as they averaged almost nine strokes lower than their 18-hole average last year finishing at a 350.5 combined score and 23 strokes better than last season. Head coach Brett Muller had this to say about the invite.

“We definitely have a couple new players who can contribute and help us in our top five. The last two days we didn’t play as well as we would have liked, but we’ll continue to work hard next week and be ready for the Briar Cliff Invite. It was really hot the last two days and pretty breezy, which we hadn’t really had the last couple weeks.”

Custer, a sophomore from Broken Bow, Neb., wasn’t on the varsity roster for the opening Mount Marty Invite but now finished in front for the Bulldogs with a two round 87-84-171 finish highlighted by her second day birdie on the eighth hole. Custer places top five as Bulldogs finish third at abbreviated Graceland Invite

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Brutally cold and windy conditions were the story as the Concordia University Women’s Golf team resumed the 2023-24 season on Friday (March 22) at the Graceland Invitational. Led by sophomore Emery Custer, the Bulldogs placed third while braving the Mozingo Lake Golf Course in Maryville, Mo. The elements played a major role in higher scores across the board.

The event marked the first outing for Head Coach Brett Muller’s squad since the Nebraska Intercollegiate back in the fall. Many practice days this spring have come with better conditions than the ones experienced on Friday.

It was a challenge to simply break 100. Custer’s 98 was good enough to put her fifth on the individual leaderboard. The effort marked the first top-five placement of the season for the Broken Bow, Neb., native. She was followed in the Concordia lineup by Logan Eschliman (101), Jennifer Gillotti (104), Maddie Lewis (104) and Mya Nurse (107). As a comparison, the champion from Waldorf turned in an 88.

The Bulldogs’ team score came in at 407. CUNE defeated Concordia University System sister school Concordia University Wisconsin (376) while also outperforming three other squads at the Graceland Invite.

Improvement made in final round as Bulldogs wrap up Concordia Invite

April 3, 2024

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Concordia University Women’s Golf team continued to trend in the right direction as it wrapped up the final round of its own Concordia Bulldog Spring Invite on Wednesday (April 3). Blustery and cool conditions persisted throughout the tournament as more than 80 golfers powered through the weather at Highlands Golf Course in Lincoln, Neb. The Bulldogs finished in seventh place out of 13 schools while led by sophomore Emery Custer.

Head Coach Brett Muller’s squad shot 367-362-354–1,083 for the three-round event, which featured 36 holes of action on Tuesday and 18 holes on Wednesday.

“The biggest positive from this tournament and from the spring is that we have improved on our team score each round,” Muller said. “Unfortunately, we’re just not where we were when we finished the fall. The spring weather has been pretty tough. We’ll continue to battle and continue to improve each day. On the individual side, we got plagued by too many big numbers. That cost us a higher position on the team side.”

The Broken Bow, Neb., native Custer enjoyed the most consistently solid tournament for Concordia as she posted a three-round total of 90-85-90–265 and tied for 18th place. The 85 Custer shot in round two represented the best 18-hole score of any Bulldog in this tournament. Two teammates did manage to shoot in the 80s on Wednesday as sophomore Maddie Lewis carded an 86 and senior Mya Nurse shot an 89. In addition, freshman Abigail Kollbaum carded a personal best 99 in round three of the invite.

From an overall perspective, the top five performers for Concordia, following Custer, were Nurse (94-88-89–271; T-29th), senior Jennifer Gillotti (90-95-90–275; 40th), Lewis (93-98-86–277; T-41st) and fifth-year Bulldog Logan Eschliman (103-94-95–292; T-66th). The other three Concordia competitors were freshman Emma McCoy (97-112-100–309; 74th), sophomore Ericka Kroeker (105-105-100–310; 75th) and Kollbaum (115-111-99–325; 81st).

The competition at the Concordia Invite included GPAC rivals in Morningside (second place), Doane (T-fourth), Briar Cliff (T-fourth), Mount Marty (sixth), Dakota Wesleyan (ninth), Northwestern (10th), Hastings (11th), Dordt (12th) and College of Saint Mary (13th). Morningside’s Sofia Castelan won a playoff and was crowned the individual champion. Meanwhile, the team title went to Iowa Western Community College.

Custer, Eschliman claim medals as Bulldogs place third at CSM Invite

April 11, 2024

OMAHA, Neb. – Both sophomore Emery Custer and fifth-year Logan Eschliman found their way into the top 10 on the final individual leaderboard at the College of Saint Mary Spring Invited held in Omaha, Neb., on Thursday (April 11). Their efforts helped the Concordia University Women’s Golf team to a third-place finish out of eight squads in the field that navigated the Tiburon Golf Club course. Six of the eight groupings were made up of GPAC competitors.

Head Coach Brett Muller’s squad carded a score of 372 at the CSM Invite while placing behind only Morningside (350) and Doane (366). There were 50 total players who completed the one-round event.

“Emery played very well today and Logan did as well,” Muller said. “It was great to see both place in the top 10. On the team side, finishing third is probably about what you’d expect with the teams there today. We just need to continue to minimize the big numbers and keep improving.”

The Broken Bow, Neb., native Custer has placed inside the top five in two of the past three tournaments. She shot a 14-over-par 86 on Thursday while landing in fourth place on another windy spring day. She finished four strokes off the tournament champion. The West Des Moines, Iowa, native Nurse resides in ninth place while six strokes back of the tournament leader. Nurse will be aiming for her first top-10 tournament placement of the season when action resumes on Tuesday. Nurse paced a group of eight Bulldogs at Wilderness Ridge while coming up three strokes shy of her career low. The team’s No. 1 golfer in terms of season average (86.3), sophomore Emery Custer shot an 84 on Monday and is tied for 10th place out of 59 golfers at the Erickson Invite. Day two results wiped out; Bulldogs place third at Erickson Invite

April 16, 2024

LINCOLN, Neb. – Inclement weather rolled in just as the field of golfers at the 2024 Kaitlyn Erickson Invite were closing in on the finish line. The storm wiped out round two of the tournament and made the results from Monday (April 15) final. In other words, the Concordia University Women’s Golf team tied for third place out of 10 teams in the field. The Bulldogs carded a spring season low of 347 in Monday’s round played at Wilderness Ridge Country Club in Lincoln, Neb.

Head Coach Brett Muller’s squad finished behind only Bellevue University (323) and Dakota Wesleyan (345) amongst the 10 groupings in the Erickson Invite field. Doane served as the host of the tournament that shifted to Pioneers Golf Course on Tuesday. Concordia had battled its way into a tie for second place when the lightning hit on Tuesday.

“I’m very excited where we finished the regular season going into the GPAC Championship next Monday-Tuesday,” Muller said. “To be tied for third at the halfway point with the teams playing around us, there was a little bit more pressure. We had a couple big numbers, but we hung in there and battled back. When the event got canceled, we were tied for second with Dakota Wesleyan. We had the same number of holes left, so it was disappointing that the weather intervened.”

A senior from West Des Moines, Iowa, Mya Nurse shot a season low 83 on Monday and placed ninth out of 59 competitors in the field. The performance marked Nurse’s first top-10 placement of the season. Nurse paced a group of eight Bulldogs at Wilderness Ridge while coming up three strokes shy of her career low. The team’s No. 1 golfer in terms of season average (86.3), sophomore Emery Custer shot an 84 on Monday and placed in a tie for 10th place. The other players whose scores counted towards the 347 team total were Jennifer Gillotti (89; T-17th) and Maddie Lewis (91; T-22nd).

Concordia’s entire lineup at the event also featured Sarah Wilson (97; T-33rd), Logan Eschliman (98; T-36th), Ericka Kroeker (106; 48th) and Abigail Kollbaum (108; 50th). No player in the lineup had ever played Wilderness Ridge, a location the Bulldog women’s program last ventured to in 2018 for the same tournament.

Propped up by the top-10 finishes from Nurse and Custer, Concordia beat out GPAC competition in Mount Marty (fifth), Doane (sixth) and Hastings (seventh). The Bulldogs shared third place with College of Saint Mary.

The Bulldogs shot 352-350–702 at Spencer Country Club in Spencer, Iowa, on Monday (April 22). That total puts them in 10th place with one conference round left to be contested on Tuesday.

Custer (Broken Bow, Neb.) and Nurse (West Des Moines, Iowa) shot identical scores (86-86–172) on Monday and are tied for 22nd place on the conference individual leaderboard. Custer, Nurse and fifth-year Bulldog Logan Eschliman all returned to the Bulldogs’ GPAC lineup from last season. Eschliman resides in 35th place after carding a total of 91-87–178. Bulldogs move to ninth, Custer to 16th in wrapping up GPAC Championships

April 23, 2024

SPENCER, Iowa – In the third and final round of the 2024 GPAC Women’s Golf Championships (April 22-23), the Concordia Bulldogs managed to climb one spot in the final team standings. Concordia concluded the championship tournament in ninth place while shooting a three-round total of 352-350-349–1,051 at Spencer Country Club in Spencer, Iowa. All three 18-hole scores came in under the Bulldogs’ season average (358.5) entering the week. Individually, sophomore Emery Custer led the way by placing 16th in the GPAC.

Head Coach Brett Muller’s program improved a notch from its 10th-place finish a year ago. Concordia placed as high as third as recently as 2021.

“We knew going into the GPAC Championships we were ranked eighth in the conference,” Muller said. “With how tight the teams were through 11th, our goal was to finish top four as a team. Yesterday in round two, we only improved by two shots while some other teams improved by 30-plus. Round two really buried us on the leaderboard and prevented us from achieving our goal. When you have a goal to finish top four, you need a couple individuals in the top 10. We had too many big numbers that held us back from putting together a solid team score.”

Named the 2022-23 GPAC Newcomer of the Year, Custer took a leap forward in her sophomore campaign. She vaulted from 25th in the GPAC in 2023 into a tie for 16th in 2024. Custer finished strong on Tuesday in carding an 83. Her three-round conference tournament total came in at 86-86-83–255. That score put Custer six strokes shy of a top-10 finish. The Broken Bow, Neb., native concluded the 2023-24 season with a season best scoring average of 86.0 over 10 events (19 rounds).

The two most experienced players in the GPAC lineup also finished in the top 30 of the final leaderboard. Senior Mya Nurse played even with Custer through the first two conference rounds on Monday. The West Des Moines, Iowa, native wound up in a tie for 25th place while shooting 86-86-90–262. Next in line was fifth-year Bulldog Logan Eschliman, who landed in a tie for 28th place (91-87-85–263). Eschliman carded the team’s second lowest score on Tuesday. The final two spots in the lineup were held down by sophomore Maddie Lewis (89-93-91–273; T-42nd) and junior Jennifer Gillotti (95-91-93–279; T-47th). This marked the first career GPAC tournament for both Lewis and Gillotti.

Bulldogs at the 2024 GPAC Championships:

TEAM: 352-350-349–1,051 (9th)
T16. Emery Custer: 86-86-83–255
T25. Mya Nurse: 86-86-90–262
T28. Logan Eschliman: 91-87-85–263
T42. Maddie Lewis: 89-93-91–273
T47. Jennifer Gillotti: 95-91-93–279

Highlights this spring included team third-place finishes at both the College of Saint Mary Invite and the Kaitlyn Erickson Invite. At the CSM Invite, both Custer and Eschliman earned medals for placing in the top 10. The lowest team score for a single round in 2023-24 was the 341 turned in at the Lila Frommelt Classic back in the fall. Custer and Lewis shared the honor of carding the lowest individual score (81), also during fall action.

Eschliman and Nurse have concluded their college careers after providing steady play during their time as Bulldogs. Meanwhile, Custer, Gillotti and Lewis help anchor the lineup in 2024-25.
