Bulldogs put scare into No. 24 Kansas Wesleyan

The Concordia University women's soccer team was able to put a scare in Kansas Wesleyan, ranked No. 24 in the nation, before the Coyotes could feel comfortable in a 4-2 defeat of the Bulldogs on Monday afternoon at Bulldog Stadium in Seward, Neb.
The two teams went to halftime tied 0-0 before the Coyotes quick-strike offense was able to jump out to a 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs youth showed its own quick -strike capabilities as Sarah Hoffman scored on a free kick and just one minute and thirty seconds later Mallory Blanck scored off an assist from Molly Millard.
"Overall I am proud of my team," said head coach Rob Giesbrecht. "We showed our team's character and didn't surrender when we were down 3-0, we fought back and made it interesting. KWU is a good team, they are talented, experienced and played very cohesively. We started 5 freshmen tonight, so tonight was about us taking a step."
The Coyotes would add another goal with eleven seconds remaining in the second half as the Bulldogs attempting an offensive rush of their own to tie the score. The Bulldogs' best late opportunity came when Jordan Meyer made a run of the left hash and cut to the middle only to have her shot stopped at the goal line. "She (Meyer) had a great game, she ran miles for us and pestered their defenders," said Giesbrecht. "She is a tough battler up top and was unlucky not be rewarded when she was brought down in the box in the dying minutes of the match."
"The biggest difference was the physical play by our opponents," continued Giesbrecht. "I was very impressed by their strength on the ball and their willingness to pay the physical price. When we competed physically, we played with them. When we lacked the physical intensity required we really struggled."
The Bulldogs will take Tuesday to recover before heading to Bellevue, Neb., to take on the Bellevue University Bruins on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
Bulldogs fall in overtime to Bellevue

The Concordia University women's soccer team pushed a perennial soccer power into overtime before dropping the game 2-1 to the Bellevue University Bruins Wednesday night at Tranquility Park in Omaha, Neb.
The Bruins jumped on the Bulldogs early as Anne Marie Lind beat freshman keeper Ariel Harris to give Bellevue the 1-0 lead just five minutes into the first frame. The Bulldogs defense then hunkered down and held their own to keep the Bruin lead at just one at the half.
"We were sluggish to start, then struggled with combining intensity and intelligence," said head coach Rob Giesbrecht. "The last two thirds of the game I felt that we played very well. Bellevue is a talented, well coached team that did what it needed to in order to get the result. We were fortunate to only be down by one after our poor start."
The Bulldogs tied the game at 1-1 when twelve minutes into the second half, Hannah Denk buried a shot into the back of the net for her first goal of the season. The two teams then found themselves in a defensive stalemate as the game went into overtime.
The Bruins ended the game four minutes into the overtime period. Lind worked her way through the box and had her initial shot blocked, but the ball come right back to her, and on the second attempt, she buried the shot for the game winner.
Ariel Harris finished the game with 13 saves in her first collegiate start. "Ariel Harris made her first start in goal and was fantastic," said Giesbrecht. "She was quick off her line and sure-handed and kept us in it when called upon."
"Overall, we are gutted with the ending," continued Giesbrecht. "But, we need to only blame ourselves for starting so poorly. We will learn from this and move on."
The next action for the Bulldogs comes this Saturday as the Bulldogs travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for a 1 p.m. game against Mt. Mercy.
Bulldogs top Mustangs in 89th minute

The Concordia University, Nebraska women's soccer team got in the win column for the first time this season in a 2-1 victory Saturday over the Mt. Mercy Mustangs in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The Mustangs' Mackenzie Skay scored off an assist from Kelli Deserano in the 28th minute of the match to put Mt. Mercy in front 1-0.
Concordia's equalizer came in the 57th minute when Hannah Denk scored off an assist from Sarah Hoffman. The Bulldogs' winning goal did not come until the 89th minute when Hoffman, unassisted, put the ball in the back in back of the net.
Freshman goalkeeper Arial Harris picked up her first career win in net, allowing just one goal while making 8 saves.
The Bulldogs will next be in action on Wednesday, Sept. 10, as they welcome Sterling College to Bulldog Stadium for a 5 p.m. match.
Bulldogs offense explodes for six goals

The Concordia University women's soccer team notched a shutout defensively and uncorked six goals in its defeat of the Sterling College (Kan.) on Wednesday evening at Bulldog Stadium in Seward, Neb.
The Bulldogs took some time to get the scoring train rolling, but once it left the station it wasn't stopped until the game was over. Junior Shelley Herman began the scoring in the 21st minute and Molly Humlicek scored a minute later to put the Bulldogs up 2-0 at the half.
The scoring continued in the second half as the Bulldogs were able to find the back of the net three times at the beginning of the half as Sarah Hoffmann, Humlicek, and Mallory Blanck all added goals in the 52nd, 54th, and 57th minutes. The Bulldogs were able to score once more in the 87th minute when Jordan Meyer outran the Warrior defense and beat the Sterling keeper.
The Bulldogs will be in action again Friday, Sept. 12, at 5 p.m. against Benedictine College. It will be considered a home game for Concordia, but will be played at Abbott Sports Complex in Lincoln, Neb.
Ravens offense too much for Bulldogs

The Concordia University women's soccer team had a rough end to its week with a 6-0 defeat at the hands of the Benedictine College Ravens, Saturday at Bulldog Stadium in Seward, Neb.
The game was even through the first 28 minutes before Benedictine was able to push across a goal by Alyssa Cirian. "I actually thought we played very well in the early stages. We had a good amount of possession and territorially we doing very well," said head coach Rob Giesbrecht. Cirian was able to score again in the 39th and 59th minutes of the contest.
Concordia goal keeper, freshman Ariel Harris, faced the most aggressive offense she has seen in her short career. "They are a quality side and we paid the price for not committing to tackle hard or to defend tighter," continued Giesbrecht. "Ariel made a few great saves to keep us in it. We need to protect her more and not rely so much on her to keep us in games."
Benedictine extended its lead with goals in the 63rd, 80th and 84th minutes to take the advantage to 6-0. The Bulldogs were unable to answer with an offensive assault of their own.
Concordia begins Great Plains Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 17, against Dana at 5 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.
"Dana will be a tough test," said Giesbrecht. "They are a quality program and will present us with a difficult challenge. I hope we have learned from our games so far - our main objective is to put 90 minutes together."
Vikings surge to victory over Bulldogs

The Concordia University women's soccer team allowed four goals in a ten minute spurt letting the Dana College Vikings surge back for a 4-2 victory over the Bulldogs Wednesday night at Bulldog Stadium in Seward, Neb.
The Bulldogs began the scoring just before halftime with a goal by Kayla Geyer off a corner kick by Sarah Hoffman. Concordia extended its lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 71st minute by Hoffman off an assist from Jordan Meyer. Then the flood gates opened as Dana scored four goals in the 73rd, 74th, 75th, and 77th minutes to surge to victory. The Viking goals came from Michelle Mullen (2), Samantha Flowers and Anne Straka.
"Anytime you lead a game by two and end up losing it's tough to swallow," said head coach Rob Giesbrecht. "I never felt we played to our potential; we failed to control the game. We lacked the cohesion offensively to create better goal scoring chances."
Giesbrecht continued, "We need to pick ourselves up and move on. Morningside will be another tough challenge."
The Bulldogs next contest comes against Morningside this Saturday, Sept. 20, in Sioux City, Iowa.
Mustangs run away from Bulldogs

The Concordia University, Nebraska women's soccer team dropped a high-scoring affair to the Morningside College Mustangs, 5-3, Saturday evening in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Mustangs (3-3-0, 1-1-0 GPAC) began the scoring early as Maggie Kukuk found the back of the net in the 9th minute of the first half. Morningside extended the lead to 2-0 as Val Weber connected off a corner kick from Kukuk in the 27th minute.
The Bulldogs (2-5-0, 0-2-0 GPAC) were able to cut the deficit in half as Molly Humlicek buried an unassisted goal in the 35th minute. That would bring Concordia within one at 2-1, a score that would hold for the remainder of the first half.
Morningside's Kate Gross put the game out of reach with goals in the 55th and 77th minutes of the second half. The Mustangs would add another goal by Eukie Okwumuo in the 83rd minute. Concordia was able to answer with two goals as Jordan Meyer found the back of the net unassisted in the 81st minute and again in the 89th minute off a feed from Molly Hein.
Senior goaltender Sara Webb faced a total of 14 shots by Morningside. She was touched up for all five Mustang goals and made three saves on the evening.
The Bulldogs will next be in action on Tuesday, Sept. 23, against the Doane College Tigers at 5 p.m. in Crete, Neb.
Tigers hold Bulldogs in check

The Concordia University, Nebraska women's soccer team lost a tight match 2-1 to the Doane College Tigers, Tuesday evening at Simon Field in Crete, Neb.
Doane (5-4, 1-2 GPAC) got on the scoreboard early with a goal by Samantha Exstrom from Jayne Wagner in the 5th minute of the first half. The Bulldogs (2-5, 0-3 GPAC) were able to knot the game up at 1-1 when Molly Humlicek found the back of the net off of a feed from Molly Hein in the 53rd minute.
The Tigers retook the lead with less than a minute later when Exstrom again beat Bulldog goalkeeper Ariel Harris off a feed from Sarah Medina. The Bulldogs would be held scoreless the remainder of the second half.
Harris withstood a flurry of Tiger shots as Doane managed 27 shots on goal for the evening. Harris did make 11 saves while allowing the two goals.
The Bulldogs will return home for a 1 p.m. meeting with the Dordt College Defenders on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Bulldog Stadium in Seward, Neb.
Defenders outlast Bulldogs

The Concordia University, Nebraska women's soccer team is still struggling to get its first victory in Great Plains Athletic Conference play as the Bulldogs dropped a 2-1 nail bitter to the Dordt College Defenders, Saturday in Seward, Neb.
The Bulldogs (2-7-0, 0-4-0 GPAC) had many legitimate scoring opportunities in the first twenty minutes of the first half but failed to convert. Then in the 21st minute Dordt's Noelle Kreykes beat Concordia goalkeeper Sara Webb off a feed from Sarah Sikkema to give the Defenders a 1-0 lead.
The two teams played even soccer throughout the remainder of the first half and the majority of the second half. The Defenders (5-1-0, 4-0-0 GPAC) extended their lead to 2-0 when Dordt's Lindsay Landhuis broke through the Bulldogs back line for a breakaway goal in the 78th minute.
The Bulldogs then turned up the offensive intensity for the last 12 minutes of the second half. In the 83rd minute the Bulldogs were able to put a flurry of shots towards the Defenders net before Jordan Meyer was able to rip a shot from about ten yards out that Dordt's goalkeeper Jenna Noteboom made a diving save on but failed to secure the rebound and the Bulldogs' Kaela Geyer was able to bury it to bring the Bulldogs within one at 2-1 with seven minutes remaining in the second half.
The Defenders would hold true to their name in the remaining minutes of the second half as Dordt was able to hunker down defensively and keep the Bulldogs from scoring the equalizer.
The Bulldogs will next be in action Oct. 4 as Concordia travels to Yankton, S.D., for a 1 p.m. matchup with the Mount Marty Lancers.
Blanck leads Bulldogs past Lancers

The Concordia University, Nebraska women's soccer team put together a complete effort Saturday in its dominating 4-0 win over the Mt. Marty College Lancers in Yankton, S.D.
Mallory Blanck got the scoring started just 90 seconds into the match and scored again just three minutes later off an assist from Sarah Hoffman. The Bulldogs, off to a fast start on the day, would not look back.
Jordan Meyer found the back of the net in the 26th minute and Kaela Geyer made it 4-0 for the Bulldogs in the 64th minute off an assist from Molly Hein.
Freshman goalkeeper Arial Harris and senior Sara Webb combined for the shut out. The Concordia keepers had a relatively easy afternoon as the Lancer offense managed only one shot on goal for the contest.
The Bulldogs will next be in action Tuesday, Oct. 7, as Concordia travels to Hastings, Neb. to take on the Hastings College Broncos for a 5 p.m. match.
Broncos shut down Bulldogs

The Concordia University, Nebraska women's soccer team couldn't muster any offensive fireworks in a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Hastings College Broncos, Tuesday night in Hastings, Neb.
The Broncos (7-3-1, 4-1-1 GPAC) scored first in the 21st minute when Megan Rerucha found Hannah Wray on a through ball that Wray used to beat Concordia goal keeper Sara Webb. Hastings added an insurance goal in the 60th minute when Wray found Jessica Carlson from 18 yards out to put the Broncos in front for good at 2-0.
The Bulldog offense struggled to create scoring opportunities as Concordia managed just two shots on goal for the contest.
Concordia (3-8-0, 1-5-0 GPAC) will be in action at home this Saturday, Oct. 11, as the Briar Cliff Chargers visit for 1 p.m. game in Seward, Neb.
Chargers sneak past Bulldogs in OT

Goals were hard to come by as the Concordia University, Nebraska women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 overtime defeat to the Briar Cliff Chargers Saturday afternoon on the Bulldog's home turf.
The Chargers (6-6-1, 3-4 GPAC) scored the only goal of the game at the 5:68 overtime mark when forward Becky Martins found the net unassisted. Martins took the most shots for the game with eight attempts, three shots on goal. This is the Chargers third overtime victory this season.
The Bulldogs (3-9-0, 1-6-0 GPAC) were able to take six shots but could not find the net. Despite the overtime goal, goalie Ariel Harris had seven saves for the game.
Concordia will travel to Fremont on Tuesday, Oct. 14, for a 4 p.m. game against the Midland Lutheran Warriors.
Strong second half carries Warriors past Bulldogs

A twenty minute lull was all the Midland Lutheran College Warriors needed to surge to a 4-0 victory over the Concordia University women's soccer team Tuesday night in Fremont, Neb.
The two teams played even through the first 45 minute frame, but just thirty seconds into the second half, the Warriors Kayla Smelker beat Concordia net minder Ariel Harris off a feed from Amanda Grable to give Midland a 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later Grable again connected with Smelker to extend the Warrior lead to 2-0. Shannon Ostby then beat Harris just four minutes later to push the Midland lead up to 3-0.
After a keeper change Grable switched rolls and became the goal scorer off a corner kick past Sara Webb to give Midland a 4-0 lead in the 66th minute. The Bulldog offense couldn't seem to find a hole in Midland goal keeper Beth Russell's defense as Concordia managed eight shots on goal on the evening.
The Bulldogs will return home for a 1 p.m. meeting with the Northwestern College Red Raiders at 6 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium in Seward, Neb., Saturday, Oct. 18.
Bulldogs win nail biter over Red Raiders

The Concordia University, Nebraska women's soccer team got back on the winning track by defeating the Northwestern College Red Raiders 1-0 Saturday evening at Bulldog Stadium in Seward, Neb.
The teams played even soccer through the first half, but the Bulldogs got a surge of energy coming out of the break and Molly Hein was able to beat Northwestern netminder Wendy Hofmeyer off a feed from Jordan Meyer in 50th minute. The Bulldogs used tough defense to hold of surges by Northwestern throughout the remaining minutes to hold on for the victory.
The win moves the Bulldogs to 4-9-0 overall and 2-5-0 in the GPAC while the defeat moves the Red Raiders to 4-9-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the GPAC.
The next action for the Bulldogs comes Wednesday, Oct. 22, as Concordia welcomes rival Nebraska Wesleyan to Bulldog Stadium for a 5 p.m. game.
Prairie Wolves score early, hold for victory

A momentary lapse by the Concordia University, Nebraska women's soccer team was enough for the Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves to escape Bulldog Stadium with a 1-0 victory over the Bulldogs Wednesday night in Seward, Neb.
The Bulldogs and Prairie Wolves played a sloppy first half, with both teams getting multiple scoring chances but no goals. It was not until the 22nd minute that Wesleyan's Alison Frohn was able to find the back of the net after a scramble for a loose ball in front of the Concordia net.
Concordia was unable to get anything past the Nebraska Wesleyan netminder, Sara Perdew, who made five saves on 10 shots by the Bulldogs.
The loss drops the Bulldogs to 4-11-0 overall and 2-8-0 in the GPAC and all but ends any hope for post-season play. The win moves Nebraska Wesleyan to 4-9-3 overall and 3-4-3 in the GPAC and keeps their hopes alive for making the GPAC tournament.
The next action for the Bulldogs comes Saturday, Oct. 25, in Mitchell, S.D., as Concordia takes on Dakota Wesleyan at 1 p.m.
Dakota Wesleyan outdone by Bulldogs

The Concordia University women's soccer team picked up a big road victory, topping the Dakota Wesleyan Tigers 2-1 at Caldwell Park in Mitchell, S.D. Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs' scoring started early in the first half as Jordan Meyer found the back of the net off a feed from Kayla Geyer in the 13th minute. Dakota Wesleyan tied the game at 1-1 when Ellie Peterson beat Concordia netminder Sara Webb off a rebound chance in the 37th minute.
Concordia got the game-winning goal at the 56:57 mark when Sarah Hoffman connected with Shelly Hermann who beat Dakota Wesleyan goalkeeper Danielle Richardson to give the Bulldogs the 2-1 lead and eventual victory.
Webb, a senior from Littleton, Colo., had her best performance in net for the Bulldogs this season, making 10 saves on 13 shots for the afternoon.
The victory moves the Bulldogs to 5-11-0 overall and 3-8-0 in the GPAC while the Tigers' loss drops them to 7-7-2 overall and 4-4-2 in GPAC play.
The next action for the Bulldogs comes Wednesday, Oct. 29, as the University of Sioux Falls Cougars make their way to Bulldog Stadium for a 5 p.m. match.
Late goal lifts Cougars

The Concordia University, Nebraska women's soccer team finished the 2008 season with a tough loss to the University of Sioux Falls Cougars, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon in Seward, Neb.
The Bulldogs started the scoring in the 43rd minute as Shelley Herman found the back of the net off a feed from Sarah Hoffman to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead heading into the halftime intermission.
Sioux Falls evened the game at 1-1 when Tasia Murray beat Bulldog goal keeper, Sara Webb, in the 46th minute. Just two minutes later Cougar Kaye Donnelly also found the back of the net to give Sioux Falls the lead, 2-1.
Concordia got the equalizer in the 55th minute when Mallory Blanck scored on a penalty kick to tie the game at 2-2. The two teams played equal soccer and looked to be heading into overtime when a mishandled ball by Webb led to a Kelsey Van Peursem goal with just 14 seconds remaining in the second half and a 3-2 victory for Sioux Falls.
The loss means the Bulldogs end the season with an overall record of 5-12-0 and 3-9-0 in the GPAC while the win helps the Cougars secure a bid in the GPAC postseason tournament with a record of 5-10-2 overall and 5-5-2 in the GPAC.
Five Bulldogs earn GPAC honors
Five Concordia University, Nebraska soccer players earned 2008 Great Plains Athletic Conference honors.
Aaron Skipworth, a freshman from Ft. Collins, Colo., was recognized as a second-team selection. Skipworth led the Bulldogs with 11 goals and four assists during the 2008 season.
George Lara Jr., a sophomore from El Paso, Texas, and Bryan Schranz, a senior from Seward, Neb., were named to the honorable mention list.
The women's team had two conference honorees. Sarah Hoffman, a sophomore from Mesa, Ariz., and junior Shelley Herman from Lincoln, Neb., were named to the GPAC honorable mention list.
The GPAC all-conference teams for soccer include 13 first-team members, 13 second-teamers and an honorable mention list.
