GREAT BEND, Kan. – Concordia University, Nebraska Women’s Tennis cruised to a 6-1 victory over Barton Community College on Sunday, March 9, at Veterans Memorial Park. The Bulldogs capped a perfect 3-0 weekend in Kansas, capitalizing on Barton’s limited roster – resulting in four forfeit wins – while Alana Lopez Pagan and Chakira Derman shone in contested matches.
With the win, Head Coach Lisa Hart’s squad improved to 7-1, riding a six-match winning streak into conference play.
“Really proud of our girls for going undefeated this weekend,” Hart said. “We played strong every time we stepped on the court. Alana and Chakira kept delivering singles wins, and six straight victories give us huge momentum heading into conference next week. Mount Marty’s tough, but we want to start GPAC play with a win.”
The clinching moment came at No. 3 singles, where Alana Lopez Pagan rallied past Salalee Seejong 4-6, 6-0 (3). After dropping a tight first set, Lopez Pagan stormed back, dominating the second and sealing the match in a tiebreak to secure Concordia’s victory. At No. 2, Chakira Derman overwhelmed Diana Souza 6-0, 6-2, showcasing relentless precision. The Bulldogs also swept Nos. 4-6 singles via forfeit—Alexa Richert, Tessa Blough, and Lauren Gottberg picking up uncontested points—as Barton fielded just three players.
Concordia’s only singles blemish came at No. 1, where Mariana Molano fell to Vania Dotse 6-4, 4-6 (6). Molano took the first set but couldn’t hold off Dotse’s comeback, who claimed Barton’s lone point in a third-set tiebreak.
In doubles, Concordia grabbed two forfeit wins: Molano and Lopez Pagan at No. 2, and Gottberg and Derman at No. 3, again benefiting from Barton’s short roster. However, Tessa Blough and Alexa Richert dropped the No. 1 match 8-3 to Dotse and Souza, as Barton’s top duo flexed their strength.
Now 7-1, the Bulldogs turn to GPAC play, hosting Mount Marty (2-4) on Thursday, March 20, at the Bulldog Tennis Courts at 1 p.m. CT. Concordia previously swept the Lancers 7-0 on Feb. 13, setting the stage for a confident conference opener as they aim to extend their winning streak.
