DES MOINES, Iowa – The Concordia University Women’s Tennis team was swept by a strong nonconference opponent in Grand View University (Iowa) on Wednesday (Feb. 23). In just the second outing of the spring for the Bulldogs, they were unable to pick up a win, falling 7-0 to the Vikings. The match was played inside Genesis Health Club in Des Moines, Iowa.
Head Coach Cam Long's squad now sits at 1-3 on the early season. Their single win came against Wartburg College in the fall. Coach Long did see some bright spots on the day.
Said Long, “Grand View was tough. There were some moments when we put some good points together. It was good to see Brooke (Hosick) and Julia (Phillips) play well and get a doubles win.”
Hosick and Phillips (No. 3 doubles) picked up the lone match win for the Bulldogs Wednesday, taking a 6-2 decision. The No. 1 pair of Sofia Morales and Tara Ferrel lost 6-4 and the No. 2 doubles pair of Tessa Blough and Megan Hakes lost 6-0.
Grand View went undefeated in singles matches on the day. Long’s singles lineup featured Sofia Morales at No. 1, Tara Ferrel at No. 2, Tessa Blough at No. 3, Hosick at No. 4, Megan Hakes at No. 5 and concluded with Kylie Freudenburg at No. 6. Hosick put up a tough fight but was unable to grab the win (6-4, 7-5 defeat).
The Bulldogs are hoping to be on the home courts looking for their first win of the spring on Saturday (Feb. 26). They are set to welcome Bethany College (Kan) to Seward. The first serve is set for 1 p.m. CT.
