Bulldog women looking to build on 2008 success

After a strong finish in 2008, the Concordia University women's tennis team will look a lot different as they face a challenging schedule in the upcoming season. They will be without three of the players from the lineup last year. "The loss of Erinn (Beckman) at No. 2 will move everyone up in the lineup," says Coach Amy Harms. "The returners are aware of what they will be up against, and I'm confident they will work hard to prepare for that challenge."

In 2008 the Bulldogs finished 11-4 overall while finishing 6-2 in the GPAC and were a regional finalist. With the losses of Erinn Beckmann, Leah Koopman and Jess Svajhart, the Bulldogs will look to replace them with top returners Hannah Krueger, Heather Jackson and Taylor Cook.

With some questions marks still remaining for many of the GPAC teams and an expected top team in Nebraska Wesleyan, the race in the conference could be wide open.

Bulldogs victorious in Missouri

The Concordia University tennis teams had a successful weekend in Missouri as the men captured the 2009 Concordia Invitational Tournament championship while the women took two single matches from perennially strong teams.

The Bulldog men played through an adjusted schedule for the Concordia Invitational Tournament but cruised in the opening round, 9-0 over the Concordia Seminary, to set up a matchup with Concordia University Wisconsin. The Bulldogs had to fight off three tiebreakers but were able to hold on for a 5-4 victory over the Falcons to claim the title.

Concordia's women had a much less dramatic weekend as the Bulldogs took matches from Maryville (Mo.) 9-0, and Webster (Mo.) 8-1. The Friday afternoon match with Lindenwood was rained out.

Next action for the Bulldogs comes Wednesday, April 1, as Concordia travels to Fremont, Neb., as both the women and men will take on the Midland Lutheran College Warriors. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m. at Fremont High School.

Bulldog women take down Broncos

The Concordia University women's tennis team easily moved past the Hastings College Broncos Tuesday afternoon in Seward, Neb.

Hannah Krueger won a tie-break in No. 1 singles over Alexia Spencer. Krueger dropped the first set 7-5 before taking the second set 7-6 and winning the tie- break 10-5. Heather Jackson cruised in No. 2 singles, beating Ashley Potzeba 6-0 and 6-3. Taylor Cook also had to win a tie-break to defeat Erica Herrera in No. 3 singles. Herrera took set one 6-3 before Cook came back to win set two 7-6 and the tie-break 10-8. Kim Francis was victorious in No. 4 singles defeating Stacy Fausset in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-4. The Broncos were able to win both the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches as Cammie Koopman downed Concordia's Faith Ahlman 6-4 and 6-4 in No. 5 singles while Stephanie Larson defeated Colleen Freudenberg 7-5, 1-6 and 10-4.

The Bulldogs took two of the three doubles matches, beginning with the tandem of Krueger and Cook defeating Spencer and Herrera 8-5. Jackson and Francis worked quickly through Potrzeba and Koopman 8-1 in No. 2 doubles. Concordia's Ahlman and Freudenberg were then defeated 8-1 by the team of Hogan and Armstrong from Hastings.

Concordia is now 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the GPAC while Hastings is 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the GPAC.

Next action for the Bulldogs comes April 16 as Concordia welcomes Doane College to Seward, Neb. with the match set to begin at 4 p.m.

Bulldogs end season at GPAC tournament

The major rival of both the men and women, Nebraska Wesleyan, ended the Bulldogs season in second round of the Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament this past weekend. The Concordia men fell 5-2 in the second round to the Prairie Wolves after defeating Dordt in the opening round 7-2. The Bulldog women fell 5-1 to Nebraska Wesleyan in the second round after having an opening round bye.

The Bulldog men began the tournament with a convincing victory over the Dordt College defenders 7-2. The doubles play opened the match with the tandem of Jonathan Schleicher and Jeremy Jank winning in number one doubles 8-2 and the team of Marcus Herring and Kyle Winter winning in number three doubles 8-5. The team of Scott Schlesinger and Kyle Kaldahl was defeated 9-7 in number two doubles.

Holding a 2-1 advantage after doubles play Concordia went on to win five of the six singles matches as Jank, Schlesinger, Herring, Ryan Duerr and Tim Meyer all picked up victories as Schleicher was the only defeat at number two singles.

In the semi final matchup with Nebraska Wesleyan the Bulldogs held a 2-1 lead after doubles play with Schleicher and Jank winning 8-4 in number one doubles and Kyle Winter and Ryan Duerr winning 8-5 in number three doubles. Schlesinger and Kaldahl were defeated number two doubles 8-0. Nebraska Wesleyan then won four straight matches in singles play to take the victory.
