Concordia women dominate Tabor College, 8-1

The Concordia University women's tennis team cruised to an 8-1 victory over Tabor College this past weekend.

The Concordia women went 3-0 in doubles play.  The team of Hannah Krueger and Taylor Cook scored an 8-6 win over Faber and Gayer of Tabor in first doubles.  Colleen Freudenberg and Lindsea Vaudt followed with an impressive 8-3 win.  Sarah Ebert and Faith Ahlman concluded doubles play with an 8-5 victory over Mitchell and Chlumsky of Tabor College. 

Krueger and Cook opened singles play with wins for Concordia.  Krueger defeated Amanda Faber by a 6-3, 5-7 and 10-2 count.  Cook defeated Amanda Gayer 6-4 and 6-3.  Jaimie Williams earned the lone win for Tabor with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Freudenberg.  Ahlman followed with a victory over Amanda Wann (6-3, 6-4), and Vaudt defeated Brynne Mitchell in fifth singles (6-7, 7-6, 10-6).  Ebert concluded the day with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Chlumsky for the final score of 8-1.

Bulldog tennis squads pick up easy wins over Doane College

The Concordia University tennis teams competed at Doane this week.  The women’s squad earned an easy 9-0 win over the Tigers on Tuesday, while the men’s squad cruised to a 7-2 victory on Wednesday. 

In women’s action, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in doubles play.  The team of Hannah Krueger and Taylor Cook picked up an 8-4 win.  Kim Francis and Lindsea Vaudt defeated Andy Johnson and Jailyn Hagaman by the score of 8-2, while Sarah Ebert and Faith Ahlman picked up an 8-1 win over Jordan Lintt and Clara Staudenmeier by the final of 8-1. 

In singles play, Hannah Krueger defeated Karlee Long in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-2.  Taylor Cook shut down Andy Johnson in two sets (6-0, 6-0).  Kim Francis took down Kendra Bender by the scores of 6-3 and 6-0, while Collen Freudenberg defeated Jailyn Hagaman 6-0 and 6-0.  Sarah Ebert and Faith Ahlman also earned two-set victories, and Lindsea Vaudt defeated Jayne Wagner 10-1 in a non-scoring match. 

In the men’s match, Concordia held a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.  The Bulldogs won five of six singles contests to secure the 7-2 win.  Jeremy Jank picked up a tough three-set win over Ross Schulenberg in #1 singles (6-4, 4-6, 1-0).  Jon Schleicher suffered a three-set loss to Josh Siske, but Scott Schlesinger responded with a convincing win over Josh Johnson in #3 singles (6-0, 6-2). 

Cole Egger picked up a victory over Tony Bieck (6-2, 6-2), Tim Meyer earned a win over Aaron Haag (6-1, 6-2) and Kyle Kaldahl took down Tanner Vitko in two sets (6-3, 6-2). 

Both Concordia squads travel to Midland Lutheran on April 8.  Play begins at 4 p.m. in Fremont.

Concordia tennis teams fall at Nebraska-Kearney

Nebraska-Kearney picked up easy tennis wins over Concordia University on Tuesday.  The UNK men defeated Concordia by the score of 9-0, while the Loper women bested the Bulldogs by the score of 8-1.

Nebraska Wesleyan earned a 5-4 women’s tennis win over Concordia on Tuesday in Seward.  Results of the match are below.  The Concordia women host Midland Lutheran at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Taylor Cook earns GPAC honor

Concordia’s Taylor Cook was named Hauff Mid-America Sports/GPAC Women’s Tennis Player-of-the-Week on Thursday.  Cook was 2-0 in both singles and doubles last week for the Bulldogs.  Cook’s wins came against Nebraska Wesleyan and Midland Lutheran.

So far this year, Cook is 9-6 overall in singles play.  She went 7-1 during conference play.  Cook has teamed with Hannah Krueger to post a doubles record of 10-5 on the year. 

The Bulldogs open play in the GPAC Tournament on Friday in Fremont.

2010 GPAC tennis honors announced

The 2010 GPAC All-Conference Tennis Teams were announced on Tuesday.  Several Concordia athletes received conference recognition for both singles and doubles play. 

Hannah Krueger earned All-Conference honors at No. 1 singles.  Taylor Cook was named All-Conference at No. 2 singles, while Kim Francis was voted All-Conference at No. 3 singles.  Sarah Ebert was an honorable mention All-Conference selection in singles play for the Bulldog women. 

Krueger and Cook were also named All-Conference at No. 1 doubles.  Colleen Freudenberg and Lindsea Vaudt earned All-Conference honors at No. 3 doubles, while Francis and Ebert were honorable mention All-Conference in doubles play. 

Krueger, a senior from Milwaukee, went 9-7 overall on the year.  She was 5-3 in conference matches.  Cook, a sophomore from Illinois, was 10-7 overall in the 2010 season.  She was an impressive 7-1 in GPAC play.  Francis, a junior from Kansas, was 9-5 overall.  She also went 7-1 in the GPAC.  Ebert, a junior from Minnesota, went 9-6 overall and was 6-2 in conference play this year. 

In doubles play, Krueger and Cook went 10-5 overall with a 7-1 record in conference action this year.  Freudenberg and Vaudt were 7-7 overall with a 5-2 mark in the GPAC.  Ebert and Francis were 9-2 overall and 6-1 in conference matches in 2010. 

On the men’s side, Jeremy Jank earned All-Conference honors at No. 1 singles for the Bulldogs.  Scott Schlesinger was an All-Conference selection at No. 3 singles.  Ryan Duerr earned conference honors at No. 4 singles, while Tim Meyer was named All-Conference at No. 6 singles.  Jon Schleicher was an honorable mention selection for the Concordia men. 

Schlesinger and Kyle Kaldahl were named All-Conference at No. 2 doubles.  Jank and Schleicher along with Cole Egger and Danny Frastaci were honorable mention selections in doubles play for the Bulldogs. 

Jank was 16-4 overall on the year to lead Concordia.  The sophomore from Hastings went 5-2 in conference play.  Schlesinger, a junior from Texas, posted a 12-7 record to go along with a 5-2 mark in GPAC matches.  Duerr, a sophomore from Michigan, went 13-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play in 2010.  Meyer, a senior from Wisconsin, went 12-4 and 4-1 in the GPAC this year.  Schleicher, a junior from Michigan, was 10-9 overall and 4-3 in GPAC play. 

Schlesinger and Kaldahl were an impressive 10-3 in doubles play this season.  The team went 4-2 in conference action.  Jank and Schleicher were 11-9 overall and 3-4 in the GPAC at first doubles, while Egger and Frastaci were 7-4 overall and 4-2 in the GPAC.

NAIA announces 2009-10 tennis scholar-athletes

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced the 2009-10 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes for men’s and women’s tennis.  A total of 115 women’s tennis players and 80 men’s tennis players earned the honor.  Concordia University placed four on the 2009-10 scholar-athlete list.  A student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and have achieved junior academic status to qualify. 

Hannah Krueger and Sarah Ebert represent Concordia on the women’s side.  Krueger went 9-7 overall on the year.  She was 5-3 in conference matches and was an All-Conference performer at No. 1 singles.  Ebert went 9-6 overall and was 6-2 in conference play this year to pick up honorable mention All-Conference honors.  Both Krueger and Ebert had successful seasons in doubles play as well.

Tim Meyer and Jonathan Schleicher were named scholar-athletes for the Bulldog men.  Meyer went 12-4 and 4-1 in the GPAC this year to earn All-Conference honors at No. 6 singles.  Schleicher went 10-9 overall and 4-3 in GPAC play to earn honorable mention All-Conference honors.  Schleicher teamed with Jeremy Jank in doubles play, and the duo went 10-9 overall to earn honorable mention All-Conference recognition.
