2011 Concordia tennis season begins on February 11
4 FEB 2011
The Concordia University tennis season opens on February 11. Both Bulldog squads return several top performers from what was a successful 2010 season.
The Concordia women were 10-7 overall and 6-2 in conference matches last year. The Bulldogs must replace Hannah Krueger, an All-Conference performer at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles last year. However, Concordia returns six of its top seven performers and will look to a strong senior class for leadership in 2011.
Taylor Cook (Belleville, Ill.) and Kim Francis (Overland Park, Kan.) return in their senior seasons for the Bulldogs. Cook was an All-Conference selection at No. 2 singles in 2010 after posting a 10-7 record (7-1 in the GPAC). Francis earned All-Conference honors at No. 3 singles a year ago after she went 9-5 on the season (also 7-1 in the GPAC). Sarah Ebert (Alexandria, Minn.) also returns for Concordia. Ebert was an honorable mention All-Conference selection in singles play last year. Faith Ahlman (Arvada, Colo.), the fourth senior on Concordia’s roster, went 7-8 overall and 4-4 in the conference last season.
Colleen Freudenberg and Lindsea Vaudt also return for the Bulldogs in 2011. Fruedenberg (Rockford, Ill.) saw considerable action in singles play in 2010. She also teamed with Vaudt (Kalispell, Mont.) to earn All-Conference honors at No. 3 doubles last year. Francis and Ebert also received honorable mention All-Conference honors in doubles play last season.
“We have a good and experienced group on the women’s team,” remarked Amy Harms, head coach for the Bulldogs. “With the loss of Hannah, everyone will play up this year and face tougher competition. Throughout the year, I’m looking for our girls to become smarter players with the desire to compete.”
The Concordia women open the season against William Jewell on February 11.
On the men’s side, the Bulldogs hope for another solid season behind a strong group of returners. The Bulldogs return several key players from last year’s squad that was 14-6 overall and 4-3 in conference action.
Concordia returns Jeremy Jank and Scott Schlesinger, a pair of All-Conference performers from a year ago. Jank (Hastings, Neb.) was an All-Conference selection at No. 1 singles last season with a 16-4 record. Jank was 5-2 in the GPAC. Schlesinger (Arlington, Texas) went 12-7 overall and was also 5-2 in conference play to earn All-Conference honors at No. 3 singles for the Bulldogs in 2010.
The Bulldogs will look for leadership from seniors Jon Schleicher, Kyle Kaldahl and Danny Frastaci. Schleicher (Zeeland, Mich.) was an honorable mention All-Conference selection in 2010. He also teamed with Jank to go 11-9 in doubles play last year. The duo earned honorable mention All-GPAC honors.
Kaldahl (Spencer, Iowa) teamed with Schlesinger last year to go 11-3 in doubles play. The duo picked up All-GPAC honors at No. 2 doubles for their effort.
Frastaci (Parma, Ohio) teamed with Cole Egger (Galva, Iowa) to go 7-4 in doubles play last season. They earned honorable mention All-Conference honors at doubles in 2010.
“With most of our top players back, we should have a really strong team this year,” remarked Harms. “Our guys are extremely motivated and have been all year. The team unity is a real strength. I feel we can compete at the top of the conference. It’s a fun group to coach.”
The Concordia men host William Jewell on February 18 to open the 2011 season.
