Cam Long, Head Coach (2nd Year)

Four freshmen make debuts as Bulldogs edged by Threshers

Sep. 13, 2022

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. – Four new Bulldogs got their feet wet on Tuesday (Sept. 13) as the Concordia University Women’s Tennis team opened the fall portion of the 2022-23 schedule at Bethel College. The host Threshers rallied back from a doubles deficit with four singles wins and came away with the team decision, 4-3, in North Newton, Kan. The Bulldogs were edged despite reigning victorious at the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles spots.

Head Coach Cam Long is at the outset of his second year leading the Bulldogs. An influx of talented freshmen will give the team a boost throughout the fall and spring. This was a learning experience.

“It was a tough loss today, but it helped us tremendously,” Long said. “Having all the new freshmen get their first collegiate match experience under their belt was great. We showed a lot of fight and I’m excited to see how we’ll be prepared for this coming weekend.”

Two freshmen paired together at the top of the doubles lineup: Ella Dean of Lincoln, Neb., and Mariano Molano of Bogota, Colombia. The rookie duo put a 6-2 win over the board. Then at No. 2, freshman Alana Lopez Pagan combined with sophomore Tessa Blough on a tight victory, 7-6 (7-5). In the final doubles spot, Tara Ferrel and Brooke Hosick were defeated, 6-3.

A fine day for Molano continued in singles as she took over the No. 1 spot in the lineup and claimed a 6-3, 6-1, win. Lopez Pagan also took a victory by a 6-1, 7-5, score at No. 2 singles. Bethel proved to have the greater depth while sweeping the Nos. 3 through 6 singles positions. Those spots in the Concordia lineup were held down by Blough, Ferrel, Hosick and Gabby Heiser, respectively.

This was also the opener for Bethel, a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference member that went 9-9 overall in 2021-22. Meanwhile, Concordia is coming off a 6-11 record last season.

The Bulldos will be back in action this Friday and Saturday for the GPAC Fall Tournament that is formatted as an individual bracket style event. The tournament will be held at Woods Tennis Center in Lincoln and is slated to get underway at 9 a.m. CT both days.

Young Bulldogs earn two championships at GPAC individual tournament

Sept. 19, 2022

LINCOLN, Neb. – A trio of Bulldogs emerged with championships after weekend (Sept. 16-17) action against conference foes at Woods Tennis Center in Lincoln, Neb. As part of a bracket-style GPAC singles/doubles tournament, Kylie Freudenburg won the flight D singles title and the duo of Tessa Blough and Alana Lopez Pagan claimed the flight A doubles championship. Nine Bulldogs represented Concordia University Women’s Tennis at the event.

The tournament marked the second outing this fall for Head Coach Cam Long’s squad, which was edged by Bethel College (Kan.), 4-3, in dual competition on Sept. 13.

“I’ve been very impressed with our team thus far, especially considering how young we are,” Long said. “The freshmen have worked hard and made a big impact right away, but it’s also clear the returners have made strides over the summer. Tessa and Alana were lights out all weekend and played very smart. Kylie also put together a very solid performance both days. Even though we’ve started the season fast, I still think we have a long way to go and our potential is very high.”

In addition to the championships claimed by Freudenburg in singles and Blough and Lopez Pagan in doubles, Freudenburg teamed up with Gabrielle Heiser on a flight D doubles runner-up claim and Brooke Hosick reached the semifinals in flight C singles.

Full results were not readily available, but the brackets for the GPAC tournament included the following Bulldogs:

·        A singles: Mariana Molano (3 seed), Alana Lopez Pagan

·        B singles: Ella Dean, Tara Ferrel

·        C singles: Gabrielle Heiser (1 seed), Brooke Hosick

·        D singles: Lauren Gottberg, Kylie Freudenburg

·        A doubles: Molano/Dean, Blough/Lopez Pagan

·        B doubles: Ferrel/Hosick, Freudenburg/Heiser

Up next, Concordia will host Iowa Western Community College on Saturday. First serve is set for 12 p.m. CT from the Bulldog Tennis Courts on campus. The two programs last met in the spring of 2021 with the result being a 6-1 win for the Tritons.

Bulldogs claim first dual win of 2022-23

Sept. 24, 2022

SEWARD, Neb. – On a sun-soaked day on campus, the Concordia University Women’s Tennis team got on the board with its first win of the 2022-23 season. The Bulldogs got the upper hand on Iowa Central Community College in doubles play and then took four of six singles decisions while winning, 5-2, on Saturday (Sept. 24) afternoon. Three Concordia players picked up wins in both singles and doubles.

Head Coach Cam Long’s squad has evened its dual record at 1-1 this fall season, which also included an individual, singles/doubles bracket-style GPAC tournament. The Bulldogs were narrowly defeated at Bethel College (Kan.), 4-3, on Sept. 13.

Concordia picked up the doubles point on Saturday thanks to the work of Gabrielle Heiser and Kylie Freudenburg at No. 2. The teamed up on a 6-3 victory. The Bulldogs also won at No. 3 (Brooke Hosick and Lauren Gottberg) due to forfeit. At the No. 1 spot, the Tritons came away with a 6-2 victory over the duo of Ella Dean and Tara Ferrel.

Then in singles action, Concordia earned three contested wins while clinching the team triumph. The victories were delivered by Mariana Molano at No. 1, Hosick at No. 4, Gottberg at No. 5 and Freudenburg at No. 6. Molano held off her counterpart in a tiebreaker in a hotly contested battle at the top of the lineup. Collectively, Molano and company helped avenge the program’s 6-1 loss to Iowa Central in 2021.

Next on the fall slate is the NAIA Central-West ITA Regional Championship coming up next Friday through Sunday (Sept. 30-Oct. 1) in Wichita, Kan. The fall portion of the season will then wrap up with a home match versus William Jewell College (Mo.) on Oct. 8.

Molano's run to the semifinals highlights weekend at ITA regionals

Oct. 3, 2022

WICHITA, Kan. – Freshman Mariana Molano made a thrilling run through the bracket as one five Bulldogs to represent Concordia University Women’s Tennis at the ITA Central-West Regional Championships staged in Wichita, Kan., Sept. 30 – Oct. 2. Molano advanced all the way to the semifinals as part of the 64-team bracket featuring many of the top NAIA players from the region. This marked the fourth year that Concordia has sent athletes to this event, which is hosted by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Head Coach Cam Long has led the Bulldogs into action for two tournaments and two dual meets so far this fall. Concordia stands at 1-1 in dual action with the win coming over Iowa Central Community College.

A native of Bogotá, Colombia, Molano has already established herself as an impact newcomer. On her way to the semifinal round of the regional championships, sixth-seeded Molano earned the wins listed below – two of which came over seeded opponents. In the semifinals, Molano was edged out by the tournament’s No. 2 seed in Hanna Lindeboom, 1-6, 6-3, 6-7 (2-7). No other Bulldog had ever advanced to that point in the ITA regional championship singles bracket.

Molano wins at ITA Central-West Regional

·        6-1, 6-0 over Hanna Wood

·        6-2, 6-4 over Michaela Crowe

·        4-6, 6-1 (10-6) over No. 11 Isidora Hrnjak

·        1-6, 6-3 (10-7) over No. 3 Arianna Lumanog

In other action over the weekend, Molano teamed up with fellow freshman Ella Dean on a trip to the doubles round of 16. In addition, Alana Lopez Pagan went undefeated in the singles consolation bracket while also collaborating with Tara Ferrel on a 2-0 record in the doubles consolation bracket. Dean and Molano (seeded sixth) defeated their counterparts, Rachel Carlson and Camila Castro Medina, 8-6 in the doubles winner’s bracket. Also in singles, Lopez Pagan, Ferrel and Gabrielle Heiser competed at the tournament.

The Bulldogs will close out the fall this Saturday while hosting NCAA Division II William Jewell College (Mo.). First serve from the on-campus courts is slated for 11:30 a.m. CT. Concordia will look to avenge its 7-0 loss to the Cardinals last season.

Concordia shut out by William Jewell in end to overall solid fall

Oct. 9, 2022

SEWARD, Neb. – The last opportunity of the fall presented the challenge of going up against NCAA Division II William Jewell College (Mo.) on Saturday (Oct. 8). The Concordia University Women’s Tennis team will try to grow from the experience after it was shut out, 6-0, by the Cardinals in Seward. The Bulldogs managed to win one match, taking No. 3 doubles thanks to the work of freshmen Ella Dean and Gabrielle Heiser.

Head Coach Cam Long’s squad stands at 1-2 overall in dual meets. The fall portion of the 2022-23 slate also included two tournaments.

Said Long, “I’m very pleased with how this fall went. Our team had a lot of big accomplishments over the past couple weeks. Today was good to play a team of that caliber and learn some new things. Doubles especially, I thought we looked very good today. I hope we’re able to look at all the positives we’ve accomplished this fall and take that momentum into the spring.”

William Jewell picked up the doubles point by winning at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots. At No. 3, Dean and Heiser triumphed by a 6-4 score. The other doubles tandems for Concordia were Tessa Blough and Alana Lopez Pagan at No. 1 and Tara Ferrel and Mariana Molano at No. 2.

In singles, Molano won the second set before losing out in a tiebreaker. A native of Bogota, Colombia, Molano has immediately jumped to the top of the singles lineup as a freshman. The remainder of the singles lineup featured Lopez Pagan at No. 2, Ferrel at No. 3, Dean at No. 4, Brooke Hosick at No. 5 and Heiser at No. 6.

As part of its Saturday in Nebraska, William Jewell also defeated Doane, 7-0. The Cardinals concluded last season at 9-14 overall.

Schedule Release: 2023 Concordia Women's Tennis

Jan. 7, 2023

SEWARD, Neb. – The spring portion of the 2022-23 Concordia University Women’s Tennis schedule has been unveiled. Head Coach Cam Long will take his Bulldogs into action for 18 regular season matches throughout the course of the spring. The slate includes seven contests versus GPAC foes. Concordia is slated to resume the 2022-23 campaign on Feb. 11 when it will host Grand View University (Iowa) inside the Fieldhouse.

Long’s squad got things started in the fall with three dual meets and two tournaments. The Bulldogs stand at 1-2 with the victory coming over Iowa Central Community College. Concordia was defeated by Iowa Central Community College and William Jewell College (Mo.). The Bulldogs are coming off a 2021-22 season that saw them place fifth in the GPAC while finishing at 6-11 overall (3-4 GPAC). Concordia will rely on some youth this spring, including freshman Mariano Molano, who made waves by reaching the semifinals of the ITA regional tournament in the fall. Tara Ferrel represents the most experienced performer on the roster.

The spring 2023 schedule is heavy on opponents from the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference as Concordia will go up against Bethany College, Kansas Wesleyan University, the University of Saint Mary, Sterling College and Tabor College. Three nonconference matches will take place at home. GPAC play will get started on March 25 when Hastings will make a visit to the Bulldog Tennis Courts. The Bulldogs will face defending GPAC champion Midland in Fremont on April 15.

The GPAC Women’s Tennis Championships will be held in Fremont on April 28-29. National qualifiers will advance to play at the 2023 NAIA Tennis National Championships in Mobile, Ala., May 16-20.

Outlook

A youth movement began in 2021-22 and will continue this spring for the Concordia University Women’s Tennis program. In the team’s final outing this past fall, the Bulldogs started four freshmen in their singles lineup while learning some lessons in a loss to NCAA Division II William Jewell College. The circumstances haven’t dampened enthusiasm for the spring. Head Coach Cam Long’s squad has found a legit No. 1 player in Mariana Molano, leader of a freshman class that brought an infusion of talent into the program. Concordia’s run during the fall included a win over Iowa Central Community College.

The new look to the lineup provides a jolt of energy and optimism that the Bulldogs can move up from their fifth place GPAC finish of 2022. Concordia ended the campaign at 6-11 overall in what was Long’s first year as a collegiate head coach.

“I think we have a solid foundation with the freshmen on both teams,” Long said. “It’s on me – and on them as well – for them to keep improving throughout their careers – they will. I think we’re at a good starting point with them. You always want to compete and do well. I think the conference is going to be good this year for both men and women. I don’t know if the freshmen fully know what to expect yet.”

While freshmen are already making a significant impact, the Bulldogs can lean upon the experience of Tara Ferrel, a Lincoln North Star High School alum who has served as a lineup regular for a fourth year at Concordia. In addition, sophomores Tessa Blough, Kylie Freudenburg and Brooke Hosick each got their feet wet last year and are going to push for spots in the singles and doubles lineups. The Cody Wyo., native Blough garnered all-conference honors in both singles and doubles as a freshman in 2022. In doubles, she often worked alongside Sofia Morales, who stands out as the most accomplished departure from last season’s roster.

No need to despair. The Bogota, Colombia, native Molano has shown she’s ready for primetime. Molano made immediate waves back in the fall when she reached the singles semifinals of the ITA Central-West Regional Championships. That impressive run pushed Molano to No. 4 in the ITA NAIA Central Region singles rankings. In addition, Molano and fellow freshman Ella Dean (Lincoln, Neb.) are rated as the region’s No. 10 doubles combo. Other freshmen who experienced their first taste of collegiate action during the fall were Lauren Gottberg, Gabrielle Heiser and Alana Lopez Pagan.

“Kind of like the men, they’ve been competitive throughout the lineup in practices,” Long said. “I think we have a lot of depth. That showed in the fall as well. Mariana made it to the semifinals of the ITA regionals and she’s ranked fourth in the central region as a singles player. She set the bar really high for herself right away. Tessa Blough and Alana Lopez Pagan won the doubles title of the fall GPAC tournament. That was really exciting to see. I think we made some noise with a lot of our young players. It will be fun to see how we stack up. I think we have the talent to do well. We have to grow as a team and improve as we go.”

Ferrel has won a combined 29 singles/doubles matches during her collegiate career. Through the fall and winter, Ferrel sees a team that has grown in confidence. The Bulldogs aspire to finish in the top three of the GPAC. Said Ferrel, “Collectively as a team, I think we learned that we’re better than we think we are. We’re very young, so I think some of them were doubting themselves. Once matches got started, we figured out we’re better than what we originally thought we were. We’ve been working really hard during the fall and into the winter. Hopefully that pays off for our spring matches.”

In the fall’s final dual match, Molano and Lopez Pagan held down the top two singles spots while Ferrel played at No. 3. The remaining singles spots were taken up by Dean, Hosick and Heiser, in that order. Over the three fall duals, Long tried out seven different doubles combinations. Blough paired twice with Lopez Pagan while Molano worked once with both Dean and Ferrel. Things are still taking shape.

Says Ferrel, “I think we’re getting more comfortable with each other both on and off the court. In the fall it was a lot of individual growth but now I think we’re seeing more growth as a team, specifically with our doubles. I think we’ve improved a lot. In singles, we do try to push each other in practices so we grow individually.”

The spring season will get started on Saturday (Feb. 11) when Grand View University will visit Seward. It will be the first of 10 nonconference matches leading up to a home GPAC clash with Hastings on March 25. In other words, there’s time for individual players to grow into their roles.

“The most exciting thing for me is working with a group of people who want to get better,” Long said. “There are going to be some bumps along the road, and they’ll probably do some things that surprise themselves in a good way. We have to work through that and hopefully once we get to the conference portion of the schedule, we’re playing our best.”

Bulldogs drop spring opener to Barton

Feb. 13, 2023

SEWARD, Neb. – In its first official action since October, Concordia University Women’s Tennis returned to the home courts of the Walz Fieldhouse on Monday (Feb. 13). It was a learning experience as visiting Barton Community College swept through doubles and singles in a 7-0 decision. The Cougars made the trip to Seward from their campus in Great Bend, Kan.

Head Coach Cam Long’s squad stands at 1-3 overall with three of the matches having taken place back in the fall. The Bulldogs were scheduled to play this past Saturday, but the matchup with Grand View University (Iowa) was postponed until a date to be determined.

Said Long, “It was a tough day against an extremely talented team. We just need to maintain our confidence and learn from this experience to help us get better.”

Barton did not surrender a single set to a young Concordia lineup. The singles roster for the Bulldogs featured, in order, Mariana Molano, Tessa Blough, Tara Ferrel, Alana Lopez Pagan, Brooke Hosick and Gabrielle Heiser. Molano made waves during the fall when she reached the semifinals of the ITA Central-West Regional. She was defeated at the No. 1 singles spot by Clara Penido, 6-3, 6-0.

In doubles, Long paired up teammates Blough and Molano at No. 1, Ferrel and Lopez Pagan at No. 2 and Heiser and Kylie Freudenburg at No. 3. The Cougars were dominant in winning by respective scores of 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1.

The Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday for a 1:45 p.m. CT matchup with Pratt Community College. The contest will be held at Genesis Health Club in Lincoln, Neb. Concordia has eight more nonconference matches slated before GPAC play gets underway on March 25.

Back half of lineup makes difference in win over Pratt

Feb. 19, 2023

KEARNEY, Neb. – The back half of the lineup made the difference on Saturday (Feb. 18) as the Concordia University Women’s Tennis team took on a junior college opponent for the second-straight outing. The Bulldogs picked up the doubles point and then won three singles matches while eking out a 4-3 triumph over Pratt Community College of Pratt, Kan. The match was contested at Grundy Tennis Center in Kearney, Neb.

Head Coach Cam Long’s squad bumped its record to 2-3 overall. Earlier in the week, Concordia dropped a match against a strong Barton Community College opponent.

“It was good to get in the win column,” Long said. “We got solid performances today from everyone, even in the matches we did not win. Ella (Dean) was extremely impressive making her season debut. I'm exciting to keep the momentum going next weekend.”

The Bulldogs got on the board in doubles with the help of Dean and Gabrielle Heiser at the No. 2 spot. They earned a 6-4 win. That decision combined with a forfeit at No. 3 gave the Bulldogs the team doubles point. Pratt managed to win at the No. 1 position, 6-3, over Tara Ferrel and Alana Lopez Pagan.

In singles, Dean came through again in earning a dominant 6-0, 6-0, win over Nathalia Rodrigues at No. 4. Brooke Hosick also emerged as a 6-1, 6-4, victor at No. 5 and Kylie Freudenburg was a winner by forfeit at No. 6. That was enough to push Concordia into the winner’s circle. At the No. 1 position, the Bulldogs’ Mariana Molano was narrowly beaten in a tiebreaker. The Nos. 2 and 3 spots were held down, respectively, by Tessa Blough and Lopez Pagan.

Concordia will have a bit of a break in the schedule before heading to Fulton, Mo., next Saturday (Feb. 25) for matches against Tabor College (Kan.) and William Woods University (Mo.). Those two contests will wrap up the slate for February.

Concordia handles Tabor, topped by No. 23 William Woods

Feb. 25, 2023

FULTON, Mo. – The Concordia University Women’s Tennis team ventured down to Fulton, Mo., for a pair of nonconference matches with NAIA opponents on Saturday (Feb. 25). The results were a 6-1 win over Tabor College (Kan.) of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference and a 5-0 loss endured at the hands of 23rd-ranked William Woods University (Mo.), a member of the American Midwest Conference. The Bulldogs had been idle since their 4-3 win over Pratt Community College on Feb. 18.

Head Coach Cam Long’s squad now stands at 3-4 overall while having the next six days off from match competition.

“It was a good team win over Tabor and we saw some competitive matches versus William Woods,” Long said. “Everyone was able to contribute, which will give us more experience heading into March.”

Concordia nearly swept away Tabor as it won all three doubles matches and five of six singles decisions. In contested doubles matches, Tessa Blough and Alana Lopez Pagan won by a 6-4 score at No. 1 and Ella Dean and Tara Ferrel triumphed by a 6-2 score at No. 2. The Bluejays did not fill the No. 3 spot.

In singles, winners were Mariana Molano at No. 1, Alana Lopez Pagan at No. 2, Gabrielle Heiser at No. 3, Kylie Freudenburg at No. 5 and Brooke Hosick at No. 6. Heiser won in a tiebreaker in the most competitive singles clash. Sarah Brunk picked up Tabor’s lone team point by coming out on top at No. 4.

Three matches went unfinished in the tussle with William Woods, a nationally ranked foe. Concordia was clipped at the No. 2 doubles spot (held down by Dean and Ferrel) and got a good fight at No. 6 singles from Hosick, who was defeated, 7-5, 6-1. At No. 1, the regionally ranked Molano was beaten, 6-3, 6-2. The Owls are 2-4 overall but have played a series of matches against NCAA Division II opponents.

The Bulldogs will continue action next Saturday (March 4) with a 12 p.m. CT match at Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Sterling College (Kan.). Concordia will aim to avenge last season's 5-2 home loss endured at the hands of the Warriors.

Molano shines at top of lineup as Dawgs roll over Sterling

Mar. 4, 2023

STERLING, Kan. – It was a dominant outing on the road as Concordia University Women’s Tennis took care of business in Sterling, Kan., on Saturday (March 4) afternoon. The Bulldogs won all three doubles and all six singles matches while sweeping away the Warriors, 7-0. The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference member Sterling took just one set (in singles) the entire match.

Head Coach Cam Long’s squad has moved to 4-4 overall with wins coming in three of its last four matches.

Said Long, “It was a great day for us as a team. Everyone performed at a very high level. Sterling is a quality team, so to win as decisively as that shows what this group can do. It makes me excited for the next two months.”

A freshman from Bogotá, Colombia, Molano has played at the No. 1 singles spot in each of Concordia’s eight dual meets in 2022-23. In the latest outing, she breezed to a 6-0, 6-0, win over her counterpart from Sterling. Everything had already seemingly fallen into place after the Bulldogs gained the team point in doubles. The winning pairs were Tessa Blough and Alana Lopez Pagan at No. 1, Ella Dean and Tara Ferrel at No. 2 and Molano and Gabrielle Heiser at No. 3. The No. 2 spot was won by a 6-0 decision.

Sophomore Brooke Hosick also triumphed by a 6-0, 6-0, scoring in singles while holding down the No. 6 spot. The most competitive match occurred at No. 4 where Tara Ferrel managed to hold off Brooklyn Kuhn in a tiebreaker. The other victors for the Bulldogs were Blough at No. 2, Lopez Pagan at No. 3 and Dean at No. 5. Thus, there were five Concordia players who won in both doubles and singles.

On the other side, Sterling slipped to 1-4. Three days earlier, the Warriors dropped a 5-2 match in a visit to Hastings. The Bulldogs effectively avenged the 5-2 home loss it endured at the hands of Sterling last spring.

The Bulldogs will have most of the spring break week off before returning to action next Saturday (March 11) for a match with another two more KCAC foes in Kansas Wesleyan University and Tabor College. First serve at Kansas Wesleyan is slated for 11 a.m. CT from Salina, Kan., while the clash with Bethany is set for a 2:30 p.m. start in Lindsborg, Kan.

Concordia dominates Kansas Wesleyan, drops close one to Bethany

Mar. 12, 2023

LINDSBORG / SALINA, Kan. – The Concordia University Women’s Tennis team came within an eyelash of going 2-0 on Sunday (March 12) as it road tripped into Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference territory. The Bulldogs breezed past Kansas Wesleyan University of Salina, Kan., 7-0, before falling narrowly, 4-3, at Bethany College of Lindsborg, Kan. Concordia did its best work in doubles, going a perfect 6-0 on the day.

Head Coach Cam Long’s squad remains .500 overall at 5-5. Sunday marked the team’s first action since winning 7-0 at Sterling College (Kan.) on March 4.

“It was a tough way to end the day,” Long said. “We were a couple points here and there away from two wins. All in all, we shouldn’t be disappointed. A lot of players got new experience today and it should make us better for the long term. 7-0 against Kansas Wesleyan is very impressive, so it’s a positive day all around.”

The freshman Mariano Molano again did her part at the top of the lineup. She teamed with Tessa Blough on a 6-2 victory at No. 1 over their counterparts from Kansas Wesleyan. The Bulldogs continued their roll through doubles as the duos of Ella Dean and Gabrielle Heiser at No. 2 and Kylie Freudenburg and Brooke Hosick at No. 3 got the job done. The No. 3 doubles contest was won by a tight 7-5 decision.

Those performances in doubles set the tone for the ensuing success in singles. Molano kept up her perfect day (2-0 in both singles and doubles) with a 6-1, 6-4, victory over Michaela Crowe. At the Nos. 2 and 5 spots, Blough and Heiser won their respective clashes via tiebreaker. Other winners were Dean at No. 3, Hosick at No. 4 and Freudenburg at No. 6. The Coyotes fell to 0-6 on the season (also lost 6-1 to Doane on Saturday).

The match with Bethany was up for grabs during closely contested singles action. The Bulldogs ultimately lost the team score despite winning each of the three doubles matches. The groups were shaken up just a bit as Molano and Blough competed at No. 1, Dean and Tara Ferrel combined at No. 2 and Freudenburg and Heiser teamed up at No. 3.

This time, the critical tiebreakers went the other way in singles matches at Nos. 2 and 5. Molano won again by a 6-1, 6-4, score at the No. 1 spot. The only other singles win for Concordia was by default at No. 6. This was Bethany’s third match already against GPAC opponents. It fell by scores of 4-3 to College of Saint Mary and 5-2 to Midland.

Nonconference play will continue next Saturday (March 18) with a trip to Baldwin City, Kan., home to Baker University. First serve is set for 1 p.m. CT. The two programs last met in 2021 with the result being a 5-2 win for the Wildcats.

Molano pulls in first career GPAC weekly award

Mar. 15, 2023

SEWARD, Neb. – For her work in a pair of nonconference matches on Sunday, Mariana Molano has been honored as the GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, as announced by the conference on Wednesday (March 15). Molano has received the GPAC weekly honor for the first time in her career. This marks first GPAC Player of the Week announcement from the GPAC for the 2022-23 season.

A freshman from Bogotá, Colombia, Molano has immediately taken on the No. 1 spot in the singles lineup. She’s currently ranked fourth in the NAIA’s central region. Molano backed that ranking up this Sunday by taking singles victories by scores of 6-1, 6-4, at Kansas Wesleyan University and 6-1, 6-4, at Bethany College (Kan.). As part of her perfect day, Molano also teamed up with Tessa Blough at No. 1 doubles for two triumphs over their KCAC opposition. As a team, the Bulldogs defeated Kansas Wesleyan, 7-0, before being clipped by Bethany, 4-3. In dual matches, Molano has gone 6-4 in singles with all matches coming at the No. 1 spot.

Molano and Concordia Women’s Tennis (5-5) are slated to return to action at Baker University (Kan.) at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday.

Blough, Ferrel fight back as Concordia ekes out victory over Dutch

Mar. 21, 2023

PELLA, Iowa – In an evening full of on-court drama, the Concordia University Women’s Tennis team pulled through in tight situations and emerged victorious in Pella, Iowa, on Tuesday (March 21). The Bulldogs clinched the team win over NCAA Division III Central College when Tessa Blough outdueled her counterpart at the No. 2 singles spot (with two matches still to be decided at the time). Concordia wound up taking it by a score of 5-4 while rallying back from a deficit after doubles.

Head Coach Cam Long’s squad has moved to 3-1 in the month of March while improving to 6-5 overall. Said Long, “We did just enough to win. Tessa and Tara (Ferrel) were huge for us, pulling through after dropping the first set.”

The Bulldogs had gone 6-0 in their most recent outing that involved matches with Kansas Wesleyan University and Bethany College (Kan.) on the same day. The Dutch made Concordia work for this one while coming away with wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. The Bulldogs salvaged an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles thanks to the work of Ella Dean and Ferrel. Concordia’s other doubles duos were Mariana Molano and Blough at No. 1 and Alana Lopez Pagan and Gabrielle Heiser at No. 3. The score was 2-1 (in accordance with NCAA D-III scoring rules that counts all doubles matches in the team scoring).

The top of the Bulldog singles lineup then did the trick in paving the way for a comeback. Molano dominate at the No. 1 position, 6-1, 6-0, while Lopez Pagan followed suit at No. 2, 6-2, 6-1. Concordia then capitalized on a chance to secure the team win. Ferrel at No. 3 and Blough at No. 2 both dropped their first sets before fighting back to triumph in tiebreaker situations. Blough’s 3-6, 4-6, 1-0 (4), victory made the team score 5-2 at that point. The Dutch then tightened it up by persevering at the Nos. 5 and 6 positions, held down in the Bulldog lineup by Brooke Hosick and Heiser, respectively. Molano pushed her season singles to 7-4 and is riding a four-match win streak.

As for Central, it has dropped to 5-9 overall this season. The Dutch compete as a member of the American Rivers Conference. The Concordia and Central women’s programs had not met since the Dutch claimed a 5-4 win in March of 2020.

The start of conference play is up next. The Bulldogs will welcome Hastings (5-3, 0-0 GPAC) to Seward for an 11 a.m. CT first serve on Saturday. Concordia will attempt to duplicate its 6-1 road win over the Broncos in 2022.

Bulldogs-Broncos to clash in conference opener

Mar. 22, 2023

SEWARD, Neb. – The start of conference play will arrive on Saturday for Concordia University Women’s Tennis, which has played its first 11 matches of the 2022-23 season versus non-league opponents. The Bulldogs will welcome Hastings to Seward for an 11 a.m. CT first serve in the GPAC opener for both sides. Head Coach Cam Long’s squad is fresh off a 5-4 win over NCAA Division III Central College (Iowa). Concordia will carry an overall record of 6-5 into Saturday’s match.

Saturday vs. Hastings (5-3, 0-0 GPAC), 11 a.m.
--Location: Bulldog Tennis Courts (Seward, Neb.)

By the numbers

·        The Bulldogs began the season ranked No. 5 in the GPAC (according to the official poll released on NAIA.org) and have remained in that spot throughout the spring. The favorites in the conference heading into GPAC play include the likes of Midland, Morningside and Doane. The Warriors swept 2022 GPAC regular season and tournament titles and represented the league at the national tournament. The first conference match of this season was played this past Sunday when Doane defeated Mount Marty, 7-0.

·        Concordia owns a record of 3-1 this March with the lone loss being a 4-3 decision that could have gone either way. The wins in March have come against Sterling College (Kan.), 7-0, Kansas Wesleyan University, 7-0, and Central College, 5-4. Previously, the Bulldogs went 2-2 in February and went 1-2 back in the fall when three dual matches were contested.

·        Perhaps there were lessons learned in the 4-3 loss to Bethany that helped get Concordia over the hump when it edged Central on Tuesday. The Bulldogs clinched the match over the Dutch when Tessa Blough at No. 2 and Tara Ferrel at No. 3 claimed victories after both dropping the first sets of their matches. Blough’s 3-6, 4-6, 1-0 (4), victory made the team score 5-2 at that point. In addition, Mariana Molano at No. 1 and Alana Lopez Pagan at No. 2 pulled out wins. Their efforts made up for a 2-1 deficit after doubles. Ferrel combined with Ella Dean on a victory at No. 2 doubles.

·        Through the first 11 dual matches, Concordia players have combined to go 32-31 in singles and 20-12 in doubles matches. Molano owns a four-match win streak and has pushed her overall singles record to 7-4. Two other Bulldogs have notched four singles wins apiece: Lopez Pagan (4-4) and Brooke Hosick (4-6). In terms of winning percentage, the most successful doubles tandem has been Dean and Heiser, who are 3-0 when paired together. Meanwhile, Dean and Ferrel have teamed up on a 4-2 record together.

·        Hastings has started out 5-3 this season with its most recent outing resulting in a 4-3 loss to Oakland Community College. That decision snapped a three-match win streak for the Broncos, currently ranked sixth in the GPAC, right behind Concordia. Hastings has improved from last season when it went 3-13 overall, 2-5 GPAC. The Bulldogs won last season’s meeting with the Broncos, 6-1.

Next week

In a rescheduled match, the Bulldogs will play at Baker University on March 28 before turning around to host Morningside on April 1.

Concordia makes quick work of Hastings in conference opener

Mar. 25, 2023

SEWARD, Neb. – Cool temperatures and blustery conditions greeted Concordia University Women’s Tennis as it got the conference opener underway on Saturday (March 25) morning. The Bulldogs cut through the wind and turned away visiting Hastings, 7-0, in a clean sweep that took place on the home courts in Seward. All six Concordia players who saw action in the contest earned wins in both doubles and singles. The Broncos made it tight at the No. 6 singles and No. 2 doubles positions.

Head Coach Cam Long’s squad has moved to 4-1 in the month of March while pushing the overall record to 7-5. The only loss during the month was a highly contested 4-3 decision at Bethany College (Kan.).

“This was good to see and a great way to start conference play,” Long said. “We started to gain momentum as a team and got a little bit out of our routine and rhythm over spring break, but we looked good and played very smart today. If we can continue to play like this, good things can happen for us in the coming weeks.”

The overall dominance was impressive while up against a Hastings squad that had gone 5-3 outside of league play. In doubles play, the point was clinched as the Nos. 1 and 3 Concordia tandems both won by 6-2 scores. Those duos were made up of Tessa Blough and Alana Lopez Pagan at No. 1 and Ella Dean and Gabrielle Heiser at No. 3. The only drama was whether the Bulldogs could pull it out at No. 2. They did just that behind Tara Ferrel and Mariana Molano, 7-6 (7-5).

The Broncos nearly got on the board at No. 6 singles, which went to a tiebreaker. Concordia took that point when Gabrielle Heiser held off Jenna Davison, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (2). At all other singles spots, the Bulldogs won every set. Decisions (in lineup order) were taken by Molano, 6-1, 6-0, Blough, 6-4, 6-2, Lopez Pagan, 6-2, 6-0, Dean, 6-3, 6-4, and Ferrel, 6-1, 6-2. Molano will be a challenge for anyone in the GPAC to beat. The freshman now stands at 8-4 this season in singles action.

On the other hand, Hastings slipped to 5-4 overall. The Broncos own wins over NAIA foes in Tabor College (Kan.), Friends University (Kan.) and Baker University (Kan.). Concordia has won each of the last four series meetings over Hastings.

A makeup match at Baker University is coming up on Tuesday in Baldwin City, Kan. First serve is set for 1 p.m. CT. The two programs last met up in 2021 when the Wildcats took a 5-2 decision.

Dawgs look to stay hot versus Baker, Morningside

Mar. 27, 2023

SEWARD, Neb. – Concordia University Women’s Tennis has picked up momentum during the month of March. The Bulldogs will attempt to finish the month off strong on Tuesday as they head to Baldwin City, Kan., for a tussle with Baker University. Then on Saturday, Concordia will welcome Morningside to Seward for an 11 a.m. CT first serve. Head Coach Cam Long’s squad gained confidence this past weekend with a 7-0 drubbing of Hastings. That result pushed the Bulldogs to 7-5 overall (1-1 GPAC) on the season.

This Week

Tuesday, March 28 at Baker (0-4), 1 p.m.
--Location: Sports Pavilion (Lawrence, Kan.)

Saturday, April 1 vs. Morningside (9-4, 0-0 GPAC), 11 a.m.
--Location: Bulldog Tennis Courts (Seward, Neb.)

By the numbers

·        The Bulldogs began the season ranked No. 5 in the GPAC (according to the official poll released on NAIA.org) and have remained in that spot throughout the spring. The favorites in the conference heading into GPAC play included the likes of Midland, Morningside and Doane. So far this spring, only two GPAC matches have been contested (entering the week). Concordia defeated Hastings and Doane got the best of Mount Marty. Only two teams in the league have more overall wins than the Bulldogs: Morningside (9-4) and Midland (8-2).

·        In last week’s action, Concordia eked out a 5-4 win over Central College (Iowa) as a lead into the GPAC opener with Hastings. While routing the Broncos, all six Bulldogs who took to the court won both their doubles and singles matches. Those Concordia players were Mariana Molano, Tessa Blough, Alana Lopez Pagan, Ella Dean, Tara Ferrel and Gabrielle Heiser. The closest calls came at No. 6 singles and at No. 2 doubles. Heiser won in a tiebreaker at the No. 6 singles spot.

·        Just a couple of points are all that have prevented the Bulldogs from being perfect in the month of March. The only blemish on the record this month was a 4-3 defeat at Bethany College (Kan.). Wins have come against Sterling College (Kan.), Kansas Wesleyan University, Central and Hastings. During the 4-1 run in March, Concordia has won the team scoring by a combined count of 29-8.

·        Through the first 12 dual matches, Concordia players have combined to go 38-31 in singles and 23-12 in doubles matches. Molano owns a five-match win streak and has pushed her overall singles record to 8-4. In terms of winning percentage, the most successful doubles tandem has been Dean and Heiser, who are 4-0 when paired together. Meanwhile, Dean and Ferrel have teamed up on a 4-2 record together.

·        The contest with Baker was originally slated to be played on March 18. The Wildcats sit at 0-4 with two losses coming at the hands of GPAC opponents: Midland, 7-0, and Hastings, 5-2. As for Morningside, it has started out 9-4 and has won three matches in a row. The Mustangs have defeated several NCAA Division III opponents and are ranked No. 2 in the GPAC (behind only Midland). The Mustangs are coming off a 2022 season that saw them finish at 13-7 overall (6-1 GPAC).

Next week

The lone outing of next week will be a home battle with Doane on April 4. First serve is slated for 4:30 p.m. CT from Seward.

Bulldogs finish March slate with nonconference road win

Mar. 28, 2023

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The improvement compared to a season ago continues to be evident for Concordia University Women’s Tennis. The Bulldogs polished off their schedule for the month of March on Tuesday (March 28) with a 5-2 victory over Baker University (Kan.). The match, contested in Lawrence, Kan., saw the Bulldogs emerge victorious in four of six singles matches and in two of three doubles contests.

Head Coach Cam Long’s squad went 5-1 in March and has boosted its overall mark to 8-5. Concordia was coming off a 7-0 win over Hastings in its GPAC opener.

“We started off both singles and doubles play very strong and got up 3-0 quickly,” Long said. “We had a chance to put them away early, but Baker wouldn’t go away. Brooke (Hosick) played lights out in singles and it was just what the team needed to close out the win.”

The 3-0 lead in the team score was cut to 3-2 after the Wildcats claimed singles wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions. That’s when the bottom of the Bulldog lineup responded. Hosick won at No. 5 singles, 7-5, 6-1, while taking a tight first set. Then at No. 6, Gabrielle Heiser punctuated the victory with her decision in tiebreaker fashion, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (8). Other winners in singles were Mariana Molano, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 and Ella Dean, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4. The personal win streak for Molano (9-4 singles record) has moved to six.

Concordia did enough to get the doubles point as the Nos. 2 and 3 spots came through. Molano and Tara Ferrel did the trick at No. 2, 6-2, while Dean and Heiser took the decision at No. 3, 6-3. The combination of Dean and Heiser has been perfect at 5-0 on the season. Meanwhile at No. 1, the Bulldogs were defeated, 6-3.

Baker (0-5) has fallen at the hands of three GPAC opponents having also been beaten by Midland and Hastings. The Wildcats compete as a member of the Heart of America Athletic Conference.

The Bulldogs will resume conference play on Saturday when they will welcome Morningside (10-5, 0-0 GPAC) to Seward for an 11 a.m. first serve in a men’s and women’s doubleheader. It should be noted that Tuesday’s scheduled men’s match with Baker was not played due to a lack of players for the Wildcats. Concordia will seek to have that counted as a forfeit victory.

Blough stars as Concordia defeated by Mustangs

Apr. 1, 2023

SEWARD, Neb. – An improved Morningside squad spoiled a pleasant and sunny Saturday (April 1) afternoon on the Bulldog Tennis Courts. The visiting Mustangs took five of six singles and two of three doubles matches on their way to a 6-1 victory. As a positive for the Concordia University Women’s Tennis team, sophomore Tessa Blough emerged victorious in both doubles and singles.

Head Coach Cam Long’s squad went 5-1 during the month of March before opening April against one of the GPAC favorites. The Bulldogs have dipped to 8-6 overall (1-1 GPAC).

Morningside went up 4-0 in the team scoring before Blough put an end to the shutout bid. The sophomore from Cody, Wyo., won a close one over Emily Clotfelter at No. 2, 7-5, 6-4. That was the only singles contest the Mustangs would surrender. In compelling drama at the No. 1 spot, Morningside’s Jil Hellerforth held off Mariana Molano, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (9). The final four spots in Concordia’s lineup (in order) featured Alana Lopez Pagan, Ella Dean, Tara Ferrel and Brooke Hosick.

All three doubles matches ended in 6-3 final scores. The Mustangs took the team point while coming out on top at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots. Blough teamed up with Lopez Pagan on the victory at No. 1. The other Bulldog doubles combos were made up of Ferrel and Molano at No. 2 and Dean and Heiser at No. 3.

Morningside (10-4, 1-0 GPAC) was ranked No. 2 in the latest official GPAC poll. The Mustangs backed that ranking up on Saturday while pushing their win streak to four. Morningside went 6-1 in league play in 2022.

GPAC action will continue on Tuesday when the Bulldogs will welcome rival Doane (6-10, 2-0 GPAC) to town for a 4:30 p.m. CT first serve. Concordia will attempt to reverse last year’s result when it was defeated by the Tigers, 6-1, in Crete.

Rivalry clash with Doane up next

Apr. 2, 2023

SEWARD, Neb. – GPAC play continues this week as the Concordia University Women’s Tennis team aims to shake off Saturday’s home loss to Morningside. The Bulldogs are readying to host rival Doane on Tuesday with first serve slated for 4:30 p.m. CT from the Bulldog Tennis Courts. Head Coach Cam Long’s squad picked up a 5-2 nonconference victory last week over Baker University (Kan.) before the 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Mustangs. Concordia will enter the week at 8-6 overall (1-1 GPAC) with the one GPAC victory coming over Hastings.

This Week

Tuesday, April 4 vs. Doane (6-10, 2-0 GPAC), 4:30 p.m.
--Location: Bulldog Tennis Courts (Seward, Neb.)

By the numbers

·        The Bulldogs went 5-1 in March with the only defeat being a 4-3 loss to Bethany College (Kan.). The wins came over Sterling College (Kan.), 7-0, Kansas Wesleyan University, 7-0, Central College (Iowa), 5-4, Hastings, 7-0 and Baker, 5-2. A tough slate in February appears to have sharpened Concordia, which played two strong JUCOs and No. 23 William Woods University (Mo.) earlier this spring. Among GPAC teams, the Bulldogs are currently ranked fifth behind Midland, Morningside, Doane and College of Saint Mary.

·        In action with Baker, Concordia took four singles matches and two doubles contests on its way to victory. Singles winners were Mariana Molano at No. 1, Ella Dean at No. 4, Brooke Hosick at No. 5 and Gabrielle Heiser at No. 6. The doubles victors were Molano and Tara Ferrel at No. 2 and Dean and Heiser at No. 3. Positive results were harder to come by versus Morningside, but Tessa Blough managed to win at both No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles. Blough paired with Alana Lopez Pagan in doubles. Compelling drama came at No. 1 doubles as Molano was upset by Morningside’s Jil Hellerforth, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (9).

·        Through 14 matches, the Bulldogs have gone a combined 43-38 in singles and 26-15 in doubles play. At the top of the lineup, Molano saw her singles win streak ended at five. However, she continues to lead the team in singles wins with a 9-5 mark in dual meets. Four of her teammates have exactly five singles wins: Dean (5-3), Lopez Pagan (5-6), Blough (5-7) and Hosick (5-7). In doubles, Dean and Heiser have been near perfect with a 5-1 record as partners.

·        The hope is to turn around last season’s 6-1 loss suffered at Doane. In the series, the Tigers have won three in a row. The most recent Concordia victory over Doane occurred in 2019 by a 9-0 score. That season was one of the best in program history as the Bulldogs finished with a school record 15 wins overall and reached the GPAC tournament final. The Tigers are 6-10 but have played a rigorous schedule. They defeated Northwestern, 6-1, to close out the month of March.

Next week

A busy stretch is coming up with Concordia slated to play April 12, 13 and 15 against the likes of Grand View, Mount Marty and Midland, respectively. As part of the home matches versus Mount Marty on April 13, the Bulldogs will honor senior Tara Ferrel.

Molano bounces back, Bulldogs defeated by Doane

Apr. 4, 2023

SEWARD, Neb. – It was a bounce-back individual performance from Mariana Molano as she again starred atop the singles lineup for Concordia University Women’s Tennis. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to pull the Bulldogs through in the team scoring. Visiting Doane came away from Seward with a 5-2 victory as the Tigers took two of three doubles and four of six singles decisions on Tuesday (April 4) evening.

Head Coach Cam Long’s squad has dropped back-to-back home matches while up against Morningside and Doane. Concordia stands at 8-7 overall (1-2 GPAC).

“We have to be mentally tough,” Long said. “We just didn’t have enough energy. That was the biggest disappointment. We were a little too sluggish. Doane wanted to play and they played well. That was the biggest difference.”

Based on the most recent GPAC ratings, this was a matchup between the league’s No. 3 (Doane) and No. 5 (Concordia) teams. The match swung the Tigers’ way in doubles when they won the nail-biter at the No. 1 spot, 7-6 (7-3), as Ava Macke and Liz van der Torre eked it out over Tessa Blough and Alana Lopez Pagan. The Bulldogs had the most lopsided triumph in doubles, 6-2, thanks to the work of Molano and Gabrielle Heiser at No. 3. Doane also won a tight contest at No. 2, 6-4, over Ella Dean and Tara Ferrel.

Molano had her singles win streak snapped this past Saturday versus Morningside, but she got back into the win column on Tuesday by toppling the Tigers’ Macke, 6-4, 6-3. The one other team point for Concordia was delivered by Ferrel as she outlasted her opponent in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, at No. 5. The rest of the Bulldog lineup featured Blough at No. 2, Lopez Pagan at No. 3, Dean at No. 4 and Brooke Hosick at No. 6.

Said Long, “It was good to see Mariana bounce back. She played through some pain and won both singles and doubles. It was good to see her battle through that. Tara did a nice job winning a third set. Overall, we’ll have better days ahead.”

Doane (7-11, 3-0 GPAC) remains unbeaten in league play having also defeated Mount Marty and Northwestern. The Tigers have won three series meeting in a row over Concordia.

The Bulldogs will take the Easter weekend off from competition before returning to action with a home match versus Grand View University (Iowa) on April 12. First serve is set for 11:30 a.m. CT from the Bulldog Tennis Courts. Concordia will attempt to avenge the 7-0 defeat it was dealt by the Vikings last season.

Senior Ferrel set to be recognized in week packed with action

Apr. 11, 2023

SEWARD, Neb. – One of the busiest stretches of the entire regular season is coming up this week as Concordia University Women’s Tennis is slated to play Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. The opponents will include Heart of America Athletic Conference foe Grand View University (Iowa) and then GPAC rivals Mount Marty and Midland. As part of the home matchup with Mount Marty on Thursday, the Bulldogs will recognize their lone senior, Tara Ferrel. Head Coach Cam Long’s squad is coming off a 5-2 loss last week to Doane and sits at 8-7 overall (1-2 GPAC).

--Location: Bulldog Tennis Courts (Seward, Neb.)

By the numbers

·        Concordia has dropped back-to-back GPAC matches after going 5-1 during the month of March. So far in April, the Bulldogs have been defeated by Morningside, 6-1, and Doane, 5-2. In the new GPAC ratings released on Monday, the Bulldogs checked in at No. 5 behind No. 1 Midland, No. 2 Morningside, No. 3 Doane and No. 4 College of Saint Mary. The teams ranked 6 through 8 are Hastings, Northwestern and Mount Marty, respectively. Currently, there are three GPAC squads without a loss in conference play: Doane (3-0), Midland (2-0) and Morningside (1-0).

·        The loss at Doane on April 4 was the lone outing of last week. Long came away feeling like his team is capable of competing at a higher level. The team points were generated from Mariana Molano at No. 1 singles and Tara Ferrel at No. 5 singles. It wasn’t enough to rally back from the 1-0 deficit after doubles. Concordia came up a hair short of taking that doubles point as Molano and Gabrielle Heiser got the job done at No. 3 (6-2) and Tessa Blough and Alana Lopez Pagan were edged at No. 1, 7-6 (7-3). Rival Doane has won three-straight series meetings.

·        Through 15 matches this season, the Bulldogs have combined to go 45-42 in singles and 27-17 in doubles play. Five Concordia players have recorded at least five singles wins: Molano (10-5), Ella Dean (5-4), Lopez Pagan (5-7), Blough (5-8) and Brooke Hosick (5-8). The duo of Dean and Heiser has been particularly effective in going 5-1 as a pair. Blough and Lopez Pagan have gone a solid 4-4 at the No. 1 doubles spot.

·        Ferrel is the only senior on a youthful roster. A Lincoln North Star High School alum, Ferrel helped the 2021 team share the GPAC regular season championship with a 6-1 league mark. In her career, Ferrel has compiled 19 singles wins and 20 doubles victories. She was named Honorable Mention All-GPAC in singles in 2021.

·        Last season, the Bulldogs went 1-2 against this week’s opponents. They were defeated by Grand View, 7-0, earned a win over Mount Marty, 7-0, and fell to Midland, 7-0. The Vikings sport a record of 7-4 in 2023 while the Warriors are 11-2 and receiving votes nationally. Meanwhile, Mount Marty continues to search for its first win this season.

Next week

The regular season will conclude next week with two road matches: at College of Saint Mary on April 19 and at Northwestern on April 22. The GPAC tournament will take place April 28-29.

Bulldogs return to win column, defeat Grand View

Apr. 12, 2023

SEWARD, Neb. – In dipping outside of conference play for one final time this regular season, the Concordia University Women’s Tennis team got back into the win column. The Bulldogs came through in two crucial singles tiebreakers in the process of defeating Grand View University (Iowa), 5-2, on Wednesday (April 12). The match was contested inside the Fieldhouse in order to avoid blustery conditions outdoors.

Head Coach Cam Long’s squad improved to 9-7 overall thanks to its first win in April. Concordia had started the month with back-to-back GPAC losses to Morningside and Doane.

“Hopefully this is a confidence booster for us,” Long said. “Up and down the lineup, I was happy with the performance. Grand View has beaten some good teams. We were able to pull out some close matches and that only helps us moving forward. You have to learn how to win those types of matches.”

This was an impressive win for the Bulldogs, especially considering Grand View (7-5) owns wins over College of Saint Mary, Doane, Morningside and Northwestern. The team outcome essentially came down to the Nos. 1 and 3 singles positions. At No. 1, Concordia’s Mariana Molano shook off a defeat in the second set and edged Melanie Ortega, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (9). At No. 3, Alana Lopez Pagan rebounded after dropping the first set and won, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (8). Other singles winners for the Bulldogs were Ella Dean at No. 4 and Brooke Hosick at No. 6.

Prior to singles, Concordia gained the advantage by triumphing at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots. The combo of Dean and Tara Ferrel won at No. 2, 6-3, and the duo of Molano and Gabrielle Heiser was victorious at No. 3, 6-1. The Vikings managed to win at No. 1, 6-2, while up against Tessa Blough and Lopez Pagan.

Grand View competes as a member of the Heart of America Athletic Conference and is located in Des Moines. Head Coach Austin Grundy is in his sixth season leading the program.

A GPAC doubleheader (men and women) will take place on Thursday inside the Walz Fieldhouse as the Bulldogs will host Mount Marty. The men’s match is set to get underway at 1 p.m. CT with the women to follow. The Lancers sport records of 1-9 (0-4 GPAC) on the men’s side and 0-7 (0-3 GPAC) on the women’s side. In between the two matches on Thursday, Concordia will honor its seniors.

Senior Ferrel dominates in doubles as Bulldogs defeat Mount Marty

Apr. 13, 2023

SEWARD, Neb. – In an abbreviated match, Concordia University Women’s Tennis celebrated its lone senior and earned a victory over visiting Mount Marty on Thursday (April 13). In her final career home appearance, Tara Ferrel starred on the doubles court in what officially went down as a team victory via forfeit. The Bulldogs won each of the three singles contests and the one doubles match that were played against the short-handed Lancers.

Head Coach Cam Long’s squad has won back-to-back days inside the Walz Fieldhouse, where it went to escape strong wind gusts. The Bulldogs have bumped their overall record to 10-7 (2-2 GPAC).

Said Long of the seniors (three total between the men’s and women’s programs), “They’ve never been on a bad team. They’ve always finished top half of the conference. The last two conference matches are coming up and they have a chance to do that again. The seniors have meant a lot, especially with how many freshmen and sophomores we have. They’ve been great fits for Concordia and have done a lot for the program.”

A Lincoln North Star High School alum, Ferrel notched the 22nd doubles win of her collegiate career while pairing with freshman Ella Dean. They won by a score of 6-1 in the only doubles match of the day. Then in singles, the Bulldogs won decisively. Tessa Blough took a 6-3, 6-2, decision at No. 1, Kylie Freudenburg won at No. 2, 6-3, 6-1, and Lauren Gottberg cruised to a 6-0, 6-2, victory at No. 3.

Concordia also defeated Grand View University (Iowa) by a 5-2 score on Wednesday. The Bulldogs are honing in on putting the pieces together for the stretch run of the conference season.

Said the Norfolk, Neb., native Freudenburg, “All the drills we’ve been doing at practice and playing matches have forced us to get more consistent. We continue to grow our skills.”

A freshman out of Lincoln East High School, Gottberg added, “We’re getting close to the conference tournament, so I think this win was really big for us. We’re building a lot of confidence going forward.”

The Bulldogs will close out the week by playing at conference leading Midland (11-2, 2-0 GPAC) on Saturday. First serve from Fremont, Neb., is set for 12 p.m. CT. Last year’s meeting in Seward went to the Warriors by a 7-0 score.

Molano sweeps singles/doubles in team defeat at Midland

Apr. 15, 2023

FREMONT, Neb. – Up against defending conference champion Midland, the Concordia University Women’s Tennis knew it had to be at the top of its game on Saturday (April 15) afternoon. On the plus side, freshman Mariano Molano secured victories in both doubles and singles, however, it wasn’t enough to overcome the Warriors’ top-to-bottom depth. Midland walked away a 6-1 winner in a match played inside the Fremont, Neb., YMCA.

Head Coach Cam Long’s squad went 2-1 this week and now stands at 10-8 overall (2-3 GPAC) with two matches remaining in the regular season.

In her first collegiate season, the Bogotá, Colombia, native Molano has established herself as one of the top players in all of the GPAC. Now 12-5 this season in singles (3-1 GPAC), Molano bounced back from a first-set defeat and knocked off Midland’s Ari Lumanog (reigning GPAC Player of the Year), 1-6, 6-0, 6-2, while ensuring the Bulldogs of one team point. In doubles, Molano teamed up with Gabrielle Heiser for a 7-5 triumph at the No. 3 spot. The Warriors managed to pick up the doubles team point via wins at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions (held down by Tessa Blough and Alana Lopez Pagan and Ella Dean and Tara Ferrel in the Concordia lineup).

Midland won each of the singles 2 through 6 matches in two sets. The Bulldogs entered the following competitors into singles play: Blough at No. 2, Lopez Pagan at No. 3, Dean at No. 4, Ferrel at No. 5 and Brooke Hosick at No. 6. From a score perspective, the most competitive match of those clashes took place at No. 4, where Dean was tripped up, 6-4, 6-1.

A national qualifier last season, the Warriors (13-2, 4-0 GPAC) own an 11-match conference win streak dating back to 2022. Midland is currently receiving votes in the NAIA national poll. So far in 2023, the Warriors have beaten each of their four conference opponents by scores of either 6-1 or 7-0.

Next week will be the final one for the 2022-23 regular season. The Bulldogs are slated to play at College of Saint Mary (3-6, 1-3 GPAC) on Wednesday and before heading to Northwestern (7-8, 2-2 GPAC) for the regular season finale next Saturday (April 22). At stake will be a chance to finish above .500 in GPAC play and improve positioning for the conference tournament.

By the numbers

·        At 2-3 in conference play, Concordia is looking up in the GPAC standings at Midland (4-0), Morningside (3-0), Doane (5-1) and Northwestern (3-2). Currently, the bottom three spots are held down by College of Saint Mary (1-4), Hastings (1-4) and Mount Marty (0-5). The Warriors are looking to secure back-to-back GPAC regular season titles. Midland (currently receiving votes nationally) won the 2022 conference title with a league mark of 7-0.

·        In last week’s action, the Concordia women went a combined 11-7 in singles and 6-3 in doubles. Team results included a 5-2 win over Grand View, a forfeit win over Mount Marty and a 6-1 loss at Midland. Against Grand View, the Bulldogs won four of six singles and two of three doubles matches. Versus Mount Marty, Concordia won every single match. At Midland, the Bulldogs won one singles and one doubles match. It was a fine week for Mariana Molano, who defeated the reigning GPAC Player of the Year from Midland while going 2-0 in both singles and doubles. Gabrielle Heiser went 3-0 in doubles for the week. Two singles wins were also claimed by Ella Dean and Brooke Hosick.

·        Collectively, the Concordia women are 56-49 in singles and 33-20 in doubles through 18 matches this season. Molano has improved to 12-5 in singles (nine doubles wins). Four of her teammates own six singles wins apiece: Dean (6-5), Lopez Pagan (6-8), Hosick (6-9) and Blough (6-10). The team’s winningest doubles combo has been Dean and Tara Ferrel, who have gone 6-4 when paired together. Heiser and Molano are a spotless 4-0 as a duo.

·        The 10 overall wins by the 2022-23 team are equal to the number achieved by the 2020-21 squad that shared the GPAC regular season title. It also represents a significant improvement from 2021-22 when the Bulldogs finished at 6-11 overall. The school record for wins in a season is 15 by the 2018-19 squad that came up just shy of reaching the national tournament while placing as the GPAC tournament runner up.

·        The Bulldogs will attempt to avenge the two defeats they suffered last season at the hands of College of Saint Mary (5-2 and 4-0) while aspiring to duplicate last season’s result versus Northwestern (a 5-2 win). The Flames boast perhaps the league’s top player in Renee Acena, named the 2021 GPAC Player of the Year. The matchup between Molano and Acena will be one to watch on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Red Raiders have shown marked improvement in shaking off last season’s 4-12 overall record. The Concordia-Northwestern match may end up determining which team places fourth in the standings.

Next week

The 2023 GPAC tournament is scheduled to take place April 28-29 in Omaha. Seeding will be announced once all GPAC regular season matches have been completed.

Bulldogs overcome doubles deficit, rally to defeat CSM

Apr. 20, 2023

OMAHA, Neb. – In a bid for a top-four GPAC finish in the final week of the regular season, the Concordia University Women’s Tennis team rallied to win on the road. The Bulldogs overcame a deficit after doubles and defeated College of Saint Mary, 5-2, late on Thursday (April 20) in a match played at Genesis Health Clubs Westroads in Omaha. Concordia picked up the win while bumping everyone up in the lineup in the absence of No. 1 player Mariana Molano.

Head Coach Cam Long’s squad has won three of its last four matches and has moved to 11-8 overall. At 3-3 in GPAC play, the Bulldogs are currently tied for fourth place in the league standings.

“Great team match,” Long said. “We fell behind in doubles and then early on in a couple singles matches, but we didn’t let that discourage us. We had the mindset that we were going to pull it out, and that’s what we did.”

The Flames gained the upper hand by winning at the Nos. 1 and 3 doubles spots. CSM is particularly difficult to match up with at the top of the lineup thanks to the presence of 2021 GPAC Player of the Year Renee Acena. She claimed wins in both singles and doubles in giving her side a shot. The one Concordia victory in doubles came at the No. 2 position (6-2) held down by Ella Dean and Tara Ferrel.

While Acena played impressively at the No. 1 singles spot, the Bulldogs swept their way through the Nos. 2 through 6 spots. Concordia’s first team point went on the board when Dean won at No. 3, 6-3, 6-1. That started a wave of Bulldog victories as wins were claimed by Alana Lopez Pagan at No. 2, 6-3, 6-4, by Ferrel at No. 4, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, by Brooke Hosick at No. 5, 6-4, 6-2, and by Gabrielle Heiser at No. 6, 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Tessa Blough moved up to the No. 1 spot with Molano sidelined.

That was the regular season finale for College of Saint Mary (4-8, 2-5 GPAC). The Flames are locked into the No. 6 spot for the upcoming conference tournament. Concordia managed to earn a measure of revenge for the two losses it endured at the hands of CSM in 2022.

The regular season will reach a conclusion on Saturday when the Bulldogs will take on Northwestern (8-9, 3-3 GPAC). The match has been moved to the Fremont, Neb., YMCA with a first serve at 11 a.m. CT. Last year’s meeting with the Red Raiders resulted in a 5-2 Concordia victory. The men’s match against Northwestern has been rescheduled for Monday in Orange City, Iowa.

Dawgs pull out close matches, finish regular season with GPAC win

Apr. 22, 2023

FREMONT, Neb. – Nail-biters in singles play became a theme on Saturday (April 22) as the Concordia University Women’s Tennis team wrapped up its regular season with a 4-3 win over Northwestern. The Bulldogs managed to persevere in two of the three singles matches that went to three sets in a contest that took place at the Fremont, Neb., YMCA. Concordia won two of three doubles matches and then split the six singles clashes with the Red Raiders.

Head Coach Cam Long’s squad has won four of its last five matches and has locked up fourth place in the final GPAC standings. The Bulldogs will enter the GPAC tournament at 12-8 overall (4-3 GPAC).

“Another great win for our team,” Long said. “These close matches will help us next week in the tournament. We’ve really come together as a team and have been resilient this past week. We look forward to postseason play.”

Just as it did in Thursday’s win over College of Saint Mary, Concordia played without top player Mariana Molano, who it hopes to have back for the GPAC tournament. Everyone bumped up a spot in the lineup in her absence. The Bulldogs gained the advantage after doubles thanks to wins at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots. The combo of Tessa Blough and Alana Lopez Pagan won by a 6-1 score at No. 1 and Ella Dean and Tara Ferrel teamed up for a 6-4 triumph at No. 2. Northwestern came out on top at No. 3, 6-4.

The Red Raiders (8-10, 3-4 GPAC) led the team score by a count of 3-2 with two singles matches yet to go final. Both of those battles went to three sets as Lopez Pagan won at No. 2, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4, and Gabrielle Heiser outlasted her opponent at No. 6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. Prior to those matches, Northwestern had won in three sets at No. 5. Dean also came out on top at No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-3, decision. The remaining spots in the Concordia lineup were held down by Blough at No. 1, Ferrel at No. 4 and Brooke Hosick at No. 5.

The Bulldogs defeated Northwestern by a final of 5-2 in 2022. The Red Raiders have improved considerably from a year ago when they finished at 4-12 overall (1-6 GPAC). They own GPAC wins this season over Hastings, Mount Marty and College of Saint Mary.

The conference tournament is up next on the slate. The event will be held at Genesis Health Clubs in Omaha (on the women’s side) on April 28-29. The Bulldogs will be the No. 4 seed in the single-elimination tournament and will play the morning of Aril 28 in the first round.

By the numbers

·        With a youthful roster, Long’s program has made significant strides from the 2021-22 season when it finished at 6-11 overall (3-4 GPAC). The 2022-23 team’s 12 overall wins are the most for the program since the 2018-19 squad set a program standard for wins while going 15-6. The lone senior on this year’s roster is Lincoln North Star High School product Tara Ferrel. The lineup has regularly featured freshmen Ella Dean, Gabrielle Heiser, Alana Lopez Pagan and Mariana Molano, in addition to sophomores such as Tessa Blough and Brooke Hosick.

·        In last week’s action, Concordia won five of six singles matches and one of three doubles matches at College of Saint Mary and three of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches versus Northwestern. Impressively, the Bulldogs won back-to-back GPAC matches despite top player Mariana Molano being sidelined. Freshman Ella Dean of Lincoln, Neb., stepped up and went 2-0 at both No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles last week. She teamed up with Tara Ferrel in doubles. The battle with Northwestern came down to the wire and required Alana Lopez Pagan (No. 2 singles) and Gabrielle Heiser (No. 6 singles) to pull out three-set victories. On the other hand, Concordia had its way with CSM in singles – after having gone down in doubles.

·        Entering the conference tournament, the Bulldogs have produced combined records of 64-53 in singles and 36-23 in doubles. Molano has gone 12-5 in singles (all at the No. 1 spot) while enjoying a fine freshman season. Molano recently defeated two regionally ranked opponents: No. 11 Melanie Ortega of Grand View and No. 13 Arianna Lumanog of Midland. Three other Bulldogs have notched at least seven singles wins: Dean (8-5), Lopez Pagan (8-8) and Hosick (7-10). In doubles, Dean and Ferrel have teamed up for an 8-4 record. Dean possesses a sparking 14-5 doubles mark (with three different partners). The 14 doubles wins have equaled a school record for a single season. That record is shared with Allison Marshall and Kirsten Wagner (2018-19).

·        Concordia will be looking to atone for last year’s early exit from the GPAC tournament. The Bulldogs were defeated in the first round by College of Saint Mary, 4-0. In the history of the GPAC tournament (first held in 2021), the program has reached the conference final three times (2008, 2011 and 2019). The ’19 team narrowly missed out on a GPAC tournament title and trip to the national tournament. That squad lost by a score of 5-4 versus Hastings in the championship match. In the 21 all-time GPAC tournaments, Concordia has reached at least the semifinal round 10 times.

·        During the regular season, the Bulldogs captured GPAC wins over Hastings, 7-0, Mount Marty, forfeit, College of Saint Mary, 5-2, and Northwestern, 4-3. Midland emerged as the GPAC regular season champion with a perfect 7-0 league mark. Below are the national rankings for each GPAC squad, according to Massey Ratings:

o   34 – Midland

o   39 – Morningside

o   52 – Doane

o   54 – Concordia

o   64 – Northwestern

o   66 – Hastings

o   70 – College of Saint Mary

o   80 – Mount Marty

13-win campaign concludes with GPAC semifinal run

Apr. 29, 2023

OMAHA, Neb. – Led by a lineup full of freshmen and sophomores, the Concordia University Women’s Tennis team made a significant leap forward in 2022-23. Standout rookie Mariana Molano and company displayed that progress in advancing to the semifinals of the GPAC tournament, which took place at Genesis Health Club in Omaha, Neb., on Friday (April 28). The fourth-seeded Bulldogs got past fifth-seeded Northwestern, 4-1, in the quarterfinals before having its run end, 4-0, at the hands of top-seeded Midland.

Head Coach Cam Long’s squad has concluded the 2022-23 season at 13-9 overall. Concordia more than doubled its win total from its 6-11 campaign in 2021-22.

“It was a good season overall,” Long said. “It was great to see the improvement as a team throughout the year. We learned some good lessons and will only use that to get stronger in the future.”

The contest with the Red Raiders was a rematch from the regular season finale played six days earlier. The margin was just as tight this time, but the Bulldogs pulled through while first taking the doubles point. At the No. 2 doubles spot, freshman Ella Dean became the program’s new record holder for most doubles wins in a single season (15) while combining with Tara Ferrel on a 6-0 victory. Then at No. 3, Concordia got the win it had to have when Molano and Gabrielle Heiser teamed up for a 7-5 decision. Northwestern won at No. 1, 6-3.

The team win was clinched when the Bulldogs prevailed in singles at the Nos. 1, 3 and 5 spots. Molano took care of business at the top of the lineup, 7-6 (2), 6-4. The team victory was eventually clinched with wins by Alana Lopez Pagan at No. 2, 6-2, 6-1, and Tara Ferrel at No. 5, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1. The Lincoln North Star High School product Ferrel came through in what was her final career singles victory. The remainder of the singles lineup included Tessa Blough at No. 2, Dean at No. 4 and Brooke Hosick at No. 6. The matches at 4 and 6 were unfinished when the team victory was sewed up.

The quarterfinal win pushed Concordia to the semifinals for a clash with a Warrior squad that ran through the regular season with an undefeated GPAC mark. Midland (17-2) motored to the championship by taking all five matches that were completed (two doubles and three singles). Midland won each of those matchups in decisive fashion. The Warriors will play Morningside in Saturday’s championship clash.

Ferrel is the lone senior on the 2022-23 roster. The GPAC tournament singles lineup featured three freshmen, two sophomores and Ferrel.

Three Bulldogs joined her with Honorable Mention All-GPAC distinction in singles and/or doubles: Tessa Blough, Tara Ferrel and Alana Lopez Pagan. The sophomore Blough has picked up all-conference honors for the second year in a row.

The Bogotá, Colombia, native Molano burst onto the scene as a freshman in 2022-23 while appearing in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional rankings. Molano went 13-5 (3-1 GPAC) in singles this season while playing every match at the No. 1 spot. Meanwhile, Blough was the lone Bulldog to earn recognition for both singles and doubles. Blough teamed up with Lopez Pagan for a 3-3 doubles record versus GPAC opponents. Lincoln North Start High School product Tara Ferrel was rewarded for her work in singles play. The lone senior on the roster, Ferrel collected two All-GPAC awards in her collegiate career.

Head Coach Cam Long’s squad finished the season at 13-9 overall (4-3 GPAC). The season concluded with an appearance in the GPAC tournament semifinals.
