For the first time since 2011, the Concordia women's tennis team has earned a berth in the GPAC championship match. The Bulldogs also broke the program single season record by earning their 14th and 15th triumphs.
Seeded third, the Concordia women's tennis team has aspirations of making a run at a GPAC postseason title. The Bulldogs have not reached the GPAC championship match since 2011.
Spurred by Marlene Maier's 16th singles win of the season, the Bulldogs ended the regular season with a 7-2 team victory at Baker on Monday (April 22). Concordia has now equaled a school record for most wins in a season.
An impressive roll in conference play carried on as the Bulldogs flattened Mount Marty, 8-1, on Friday night (April 12). Concordia pushed its win streak to five while staying alive in the hunt for a GPAC regular season title.
For the fourth outing in a row, the Concordia women's tennis team dominated. In action at Midland on Tuesday (April 9), the Bulldogs took five of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches for a 7-2 win.
Fresh off a 5-4 loss to defending GPAC tournament champion Hastings, the Bulldogs rebounded by blanking Morningside, 9-0, inside the Fieldhouse on Saturday (March 30). Concordia moved to 8-4 overall.
The win streak carries on for senior Marlene Maier, who has been a star at the top of the lineup for the Bulldogs. She helped Concordia to a 7-2 win last week over Nebraska Wesleyan.
While up against a pair of KCAC foes, the Concordia women's tennis team put up a weekend split. The Bulldogs defeated Sterling College at home before dropping a match against Ottawa University.
In its first action since September, the Concordia women's tennis team fell by a 6-3 score at Grand View in Des Moines, Iowa, on Friday (Feb. 8). The Bulldogs are now 1-1 on the 2018-19 campaign.
Based on the final month of the 2017 season, Concordia women’s tennis appears that it may be ready for a breakthrough. Led by senior Annie Horn, the Bulldogs have hopes of moving beyond the GPAC semifinals.
A native of Denver, Colo., Annie Horn has brought a big city game to Concordia. The standout senior is coming off a junior season that saw her win 15 singles matches and go undefeated against GPAC opponents.
The 2016 Bulldogs were made up of almost exclusively freshmen and sophomores. A year later, Coach Joel Reckewey has a much more experienced roster led by the likes of Alison Ebel, Annie Horn and Kayla Smock.
Despite the young athletes on the Concordia women’s tennis team, the Bulldogs proved to be a GPAC contender in the 2016 season. The team, made up of freshmen and sophomores, went 5-3 in the conference this year.
