Head coach Levi Calhoun’s squad finished the 2019-2020 season with an overall record of 13-2. Dating back to the start of the 2014-15 season, the Concordia wrestling program boasts a GPAC record of 41-4 with five regular-season titles and four postseason championships. Individually the Bulldogs have had a very impressive resume in that period, having had 13 NAIA All-Americans and five GPAC Wrestlers of the year.
Concordia will have a much younger look this season as the Bulldogs have lost six of their eight national qualifiers due to graduation. However, GPAC champions in senior Gabe Crawford (157 pounds) and junior Mario Ybarra (125 pounds) are returning. Crawford finished with a 17-13 overall record while Ybarra finished 22-9 in 2019-2020. Junior Issiah Burks (165 pounds) is the other lone returner from last season’s 12-man GPAC tournament championship team. Burks recorded a fifth-place finish at the GPAC championships to finish his season with a 19-20 overall record. Head Coach Levi Calhoun expects some of his 16 newcomers to step up and make an immediate impact this season. Newcomers to watch include former Milford High School state champion Jeaven Scordis (141), California native Mason Garcia (197) and Jacob Telles (285) of Albuquerque, N.M.
During last year's matchup, the Bulldogs handled York by the score of 30-16. Crawford and Burks both picked up wins for the Bulldogs as they combined for 9 points in Concordia’s favor.
York finished with a 5-6 overall dual record in 2020. Head coach Chad Mattox’s squad recorded a sixth-place finish at the NAIA regional tournament before concluding their campaign with a 26th place effort at the NAIA National Tournament. The Panthers return 2019-2020 All-American John Fox (141), who finished 8th last year in the national tournament. Other returning starters from last year’s campaign include Fernando Servin (157), Cody Peterson (165), Lennorise Echols (174) and Marce Vasquez (197).
After this weekend's action, the Bulldogs will have a two-week layoff. Concordia will be back on the mats Friday, Nov. 13, as they take on Dakota Wesleyan University in a GPAC opening dual in Mitchell, S.D.
