SEWARD, Neb. – A successful 5-1 week has led to conference honors for junior Deandre Chery. The runner up of the 174-pound bracket at the Doane Open has been named the GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports Wrestler of the Week, as announced on Wednesday (Dec. 12). The Concordia wrestling program has earned two of the first four GPAC weekly awards so far this season and has collected 15 GPAC Wrestler of the Week awards since the start of the 2015-16 season.
Chery has been a consistent performer ever since the season began with the Dan Harris Open on Nov. 4. The native of Miami Gardens, Fla., blazed to the finals at the Doane Open with three pins, including two in the first period. The only downer of last week was a defeat in the 174-pound title bout at Doane. The reigning GPAC champion at 174 pounds, Chery now sports a record of 20-4 overall with nine pins. In four tournaments this season, Chery has placed first, third, fifth and second, respectively. He is currently ranked first in the GPAC and seventh in the NAIA at 174.
Chery and company will return to action on Sunday for four duals in Chandler, Ariz., as part of the GPAC/Cascade Collegiate Conference Duals. The opponents will be CCC foes Eastern Oregon University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Ariz.), Life Pacific College and University of Providence.
