SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Two days after a GPAC dual win over Northwestern, the Concordia University wrestling program used the weekend to rest the bulk of its roster. Only Wyatt Brauckmuller (125), Tyler Jorgensen (174) and Cyrus Marshall (184) represented the Bulldogs at Saturday’s Sioux City Dave Edmonds Open hosted by Morningside.
This was the final tournament of the regular season for second-year head coach Andrew Nicola’s squad. With one dual left, Concordia sits at 8-7 overall and 5-2 in conference action.
While Brauckmuller and Marshall were eliminated quickly, Jorgensen came through with four wins on the day. A native of Temecula, Calif., Jorgensen made a splash by upsetting the NAIA’s 14th-ranked 174-pounder, Mike Zupan of Jamestown. Jorgensen won in a tiebreaker, allowing him to advance on the backside of the bracket. He eventually fell in the third-place bout at the hands of Briar Cliff’s James Buckhanan.
The starters in the Bulldog dual lineup had already shifted their focus to Thursday’s (Feb. 8) dual at Morningside (5-5, 5-2 GPAC). The final dual of the season for both sides will get underway from Sioux City at 7 p.m. CT. The winner will pull even for second place behind champion Briar Cliff in the GPAC standings.
