SEWARD, Neb. – Three of the five GPAC weekly awards this season have now gone to members of the Concordia University wrestling program. On Wednesday (Dec. 19), redshirt freshman Michael Stann was named the GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports Wrestler of the Week. He joins teammates Alberto Garcia (Nov. 21) and Deandre Chery (Dec. 12) as award winners in 2018-19.
The team leader in pins, Stann went 3-1 at Sunday’s GPAC/Cascade Collegiate Conference Duals held at Chandler High School in Chandler, Ariz. Stann’s day in the desert included a pair of pins and a 4-2 victory over 17th-ranked Brandon Sotomayor of Life Pacific College (Calif.). The only loss suffered by Stann at the event was a 12-5 decision at the hands of Providence (Mont.)’s Mathew Hopkins.
Last week Stann cracked the NAIA national rankings for the first time in his career. The heavyweight from Temecula, Calif., checked in at No. 19. In his first season competing collegiately on the mat, Stann is 23-6 overall with 13 pins.
Stann and the Bulldogs will be idle until taking part in the Midland Open on Saturday, Dec. 29.
